Blurb:

As a newly single mother, Carrie Farmer isn’t quite ready to jump back into the dating pool in Ardent Springs—especially since her last marriage was such a disaster. But if anyone could entice her to wade in a bit, it would be her hunky neighbor, Noah Winchester. He’s the perfect man: strong, protective, and smoking hot. But her eyes have deceived her before, and she’s no longer willing to hand over her heart so easily.

After completing several tours in the Middle East, Noah returns to his hometown a very different man. The former soldier’s plan to rest and relax is soon waylaid by the intriguing woman next door and her heart-stealing little girl. Something—or someone—put shadows in Carrie’s lovely eyes, and he’s determined to clear them away. But when hidden demons can no longer be ignored, the couple gets a reminder from an unexpected source that love truly can conquer all.

Excerpt:

Three days into life with her new neighbor and Carrie Farmer wanted to shove a tailpipe up the man’s nose. Sideways.

The newcomer had no respect for the people around him. Though, technically, they were the only two houses for half a mile, so in reality, he had no respect for her. And he definitely didn’t think twice about sleeping babies if the last two nights were any indication.

Enough was enough.

“I can do this,” she muttered, stepping through her side gate to cross onto his property.

The farmhouse had sat vacant since Carrie moved in a year ago. She’d assumed the family who owned it would sell off the rest of the land one plot at a time, in sizes similar to the one she’d purchased. Thanks to a small life insurance policy on her deceased husband, Carrie had been able to put a modest single-wide trailer on her lot, and she’d enjoyed blissful peace and quiet ever since.

That peace and quiet no longer existed thanks to the jerk next door.

When she reached his porch, she fortified her resolve with several deep breaths. Confrontation made her nervous, for good reason. Seeking conflict wasn’t Carrie’s style, but this man had messed with her child, and that could not be ignored.

Plucking up the courage, she knocked on the door and then shuffled several steps backward. Nothing stirred inside. She knocked again. No response. What the heck? The red truck next to the house meant someone was home. Carrie moved down the porch to peer through a window, but the second she pinned her nose to the glass, a roaring engine shattered the silence. She nearly peed her pants as her heart threatened to beat right out of her chest. With clenched fists, she bit back the profanity dancing on the tip of her tongue. As Molly was on the cusp of talking, Carrie did her best to keep her language baby appropriate.

But dammit to hell, that thing was loud. Much louder than it had sounded through her trailer walls.

“This is ridiculous,” she murmured, charging down the steps and around the side of the house. Nearly fifty yards away stood the scene of the crime—an old barn turned garage that did nothing to buffer the sound coming from inside. By the time Carrie reached the entrance, the noise cut off, and she hustled to take advantage of the quiet.

The dimness of the garage compared to the blinding September sun made seeing anything inside nearly impossible. One motorcycle hovered on a table to her right. Though, upon closer inspection, she realized the frame was empty. Clearly not the source of the problem. Another machine occupied the center of the space, and as her eyes adjusted, Carrie recognized a figure crouched down on the other side of it.

“Excuse me?” she said. “Can I have a word with you?”

Without getting up, a baritone voice said, “If you’re looking for money, I don’t have any. If you’re recruiting for God, I’ve already punched my ticket to hell. Anything else, I’m not interested, so haul your scrawny ass back to the road and take a hike.”

Undeterred, Carrie said, “I’m here to talk about that monstrosity that you’re hiding behind.”

Rising out of the shadows, he said, “Did you just insult my bike?”

Carrie swallowed hard. Dark eyes narrowed under full brows that matched the reddish-brown whiskers covering half his face. With slow, methodical movements, he wiped his hands on a dirty rag, causing the muscles along his shoulders to flex beneath stained white cotton. Years of living with her former husband had made Carrie an expert at recognizing danger. Keeping one eye on the looming giant, she scanned the area for a weapon, aware that without one, she didn’t stand a chance against a man this size. His arms were larger than her thighs, for heaven’s sake, and the rest of him was proportioned to match.

A crowbar leaned against the table to her right. She could probably get to it before he did.

“I’m not here to insult anything,” she assured him, hoping her bravado would hold out. “But I have a baby next door who needs to be able to sleep through the night without that thing thundering to life at two in the morning.”

Surely any reasonable person would feel bad about waking a baby. Then again, this bearded behemoth didn’t look at all reasonable.

Instead of offering an apology, he stepped around the bike, his heavy boots thudding in the dirt with each step. Carrie scooted closer to the crowbar.

“Do I know you?” he asked.

“Like I said. I live next door. I’m sure you’ve seen me in the last few days.”

He shook his head, releasing a long, wavy lock to hang over his right eye. “No, it’s more than that. I’ve met you before.”

As if she’d forget meeting a towering mass of muscle who bore an uncanny resemblance to a grizzly bear. “I don’t think so.”

“What’s your name?”

“Carrie Farmer.”

His eyes went wide. “As in Patch Farmer?”

Panic raced like a gas fire up her spine. “He was my husband.”

“You’re that married chick he was seeing the last time I was home.”

“Excuse me?”

“I can’t believe he married you.”

The insult stung like a slap.

“Life is full of surprises,” she said through gritted teeth. “Are you going to stop cranking this machine every night or not?”

He held up both hands in surrender, the rag dangling from callused fingers. “I get the message. I’ll work on something else at night.”

Satisfied, Carrie nodded. “Thank you. I won’t bother you again.”

“Hold up,” he said, following her out of the garage. “Is the kid Patch’s?”

This man took being a jerk to new levels. Without turning around, she replied, “Yes, she’s Patch’s baby. I was pregnant when he died last summer.”

“Slow down.” The moment his hand touched her wrist, she jerked away, spinning to protect herself.

“Don’t touch me,” she snapped.

“Whoa.” Again he held his hands palm out. “I’m not going to hurt you, lady. Patch was my friend. I just want to know about his kid.”

Reluctant to discuss Molly with this stranger, she asked, “If he was your friend, why weren’t you at the funeral?”

His stance tensed. “Because I was stuck in a desert trying not to get my head blown off.”

Recognition dawned. “Noah?” she said, trying to see the man beneath the beard. “Noah Winchester?”

“That’s right.”

She had met him before. Except he hadn’t been anywhere near this size, and he’d been clean-shaven with the typical military buzz cut. Of course, he’d been an ass back then, too. Of all the people who could have moved in next door, why did it have to be one of Patch’s friends?

Pointing out the obvious, she said, “You don’t look like a guy in the military.”

He tucked the rag in his back pocket, stretching the cotton over his broad chest. “The hair and beard were necessary to blend in for my last assignment. I got used to it, so I kept them after I got out.”

“So you’re living here permanently?” Please say no. Please say no.

“I am.” Of course he was. “This house belonged to my grandparents. No one told me a piece of the land had been sold off.”

“The trailer should have been a big clue,” she said.

The hint of a grin drew her attention to his full lips. The top one curved like a perfect bow. She felt the urge to follow that curve with her fingertip.

Blinking, Carrie gave herself a mental slap. Where the heck had that come from? There would be no lip touching. Or anything else touching, for that matter.

“You interested in selling it back?” he asked.

Dragging her brain back to reality, she said, “Sell what back?”

“The land. I’d rather be out here by myself.”

Of all the . . . She’d worked hard for this little piece of heaven, and she’d definitely earned it. Noah Winchester could blow it out his tailpipe if he thought she’d hand over her land so he could fire up his stupid toys whenever he wanted.

“This is my home. I’m not going anywhere.”

Tucking the loose hair behind his ear, he sighed. “I was afraid you’d say that.”

“I have no intention of bothering you again,” she said, more than happy to give him his space, if not his land. “Keep the noise to the daylight hours and we won’t ever have to talk again.”

“Fine by me,” he said. “But I have one request.”

Carrie held the eye roll in check. She’d do just about anything to keep him out of her hair. “What’s that?”

“I want to meet Patch’s daughter.”

Anything but that.

Review:

This is the first of this series that I’ve read – I remember coming across a couple of others and wanting to get an ARC but for the life of my I can’t remember why I didn’t … I loved Osburn’s Anchor Island series, so I have no idea what I was doing  🙂  I don’t think that it make a huge difference but the previous couples are very involved in this story and I’m curious about how Carrie was portrayed before since she so entwined in everyone’s lives.  You can definitely read this as a stand alone but I think that it will have more impact for returning readers.

Having said that, I will admit to really liking these two.  Noah’s not your average hero – he’s not smooth or all that charming.  He suffers from PTSD and a few rought deployments mixed with some disappointments in his recovery has led him to believe that he’s better off alone.  He avoids most social situations and tends to be blunt in his conversation.  But at his core he’s a very good man.  He just has an awful way of showing it  🙂  After a pretty rocky start, complete with some awful assumptions and not-so-nice things being said, time with Carrie has him hoping for something different.

Carrie has had a pretty hard life (and this is one of those places where I wish I’d read the previous books so I’d have a better feel for everything she’s gone through).  She’s finally at good place – her own house, good job, supportive friends and only her daughter to be responsible to.  There’s no man or family to beat her down and she’s actually starting to feel good about herself.  Then she gets a new, crusty neighbor who just happens to have been good friends with her abusive husband.  He doesn’t think the best of her and isn’t afraid to share his feelings … but once they have a chance to clear the air about things, they start to see each other differently.  And Carrie sees the good man under the scruffy beard.  And thinks that maybe she’s finally found something worthy.

I’m sure that having gotten to know Carrie already, returning readers will be even more invested in her story but I definitely felt for her and was happy to see her put a better life together.  I’m curious how much growth she’s done in the earlier books because it seems like she moved pretty quickly into a relationship with Noah.  However she does talk about how seeing the other couples be so happy makes her realize that there are good men.  And Noah’s as good with his actions as he is with his words when it comes to his aversion to violence against women.  I’ve seen some comments in reviews that a woman who has survived abuse would be more hesitant to get involved again within a year or so of her husband’s death but I get the feeling that Carrie has been heading that way for a while (even if just in her own mind).

Maybe since he’s a new character, and she has to do all of his development here, I feel like Osburn does a great job of giving Noah’s PTSD its due.  It has a huge impact on his life and he struggles with how to handle it.  I feel for him as he describes some of the things that he’s gone through but I was happy that “love” didn’t miraculously cure him.  He needs real help and Osburn addresses that.

I’m reminded why I enjoyed my other Osburn books so much.  She’s great at creating interesting characters and an involved plot, plus her easy-to-read writing keeps readers involved.  With her newest, two wounded souls find each other and and work to find a happy, healthy place together.  It’s not smooth sailing but it’s more satisfying for having to make it through those rough patches.  I’m regretting passing over those other books but I’m definitely going to be picking up any I run across going forward  🙂

Review:

(This is the first book in this series that I’ve read so everything below is based solely on this story.  If there are any additional bits of information in the others then it won’t be reflected here.  I think that this story can stand on its own as it feels complete to me, but I can’t say that for sure  🙂 )

I know I shouldn’t, but I’m going to start with things that didn’t work and move things that did, so make sure you read to the very end!  I want everyone to know that there is so much to recommend this book and not to get held up on anything else.

I wasn’t a fan of Julia hiding her plans from her family.  I understand her reasoning, with the wedding and how they treat her, but she has to know how much it is going to hurt them when they find out.  But it kinda works to make the story more realistic.  Characters don’t have to be perfect all the time and as long as they have growth a good author can make it work.  And I think that Richardson definitely does just that.

I do admire how resilient Julia is.  She had a horrible experience as a mid-teen, something that forever changes her.  Overall though, she seems to have bounced back and made a life that works for her.   But time spent with Isaac does show that in some ways she’s just pretending and he helps her look at some of those things a little more closely.

Isaac is all sorts of fantastic.  He’s caring, supportive and tries hard to win Julia’s trust & her heart.  The way he goes about winning her back after he messes up in her eyes is just beyond fantastic.

But I feel like Richardson may have glossed over Isaac’s PTSD just a little bit.  We get a glimpse of it but I’m not sure that it was properly addressed.  And I’m also not 100% sure why he was never in contact with these people after leaving for the Navy.  I get that life as a SEAL is difficult and that he left under not-so-great circumstances, but some sort of communication wouldn’t have been amiss.

While the story isn’t perfect, it holds together really well, especially for a novella, and any complaints I have are easily overshadowed by the multitude of good parts – the pacing is solid, the characters are real, and their journey to a HEA (over a decade in the making) is so very touching.  I’ll definitely be looking for more books by this author.

Book Review – When Snowflakes Fall

Book Review, Tara Wyatt, When Snowflakes Fall

cover97207-mediumWhen Snowflakes Fall

by Tara Wyatt

Sometimes the heart needs a little Christmas magic.

When Dr. Christie Harmon up and moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming to escape a vicious scandal, she expected a quiet, lonely Christmas on-call as a pediatrician at the local hospital. But when she’s treating a little boy with a bump on the head, she doesn’t expect his dad to be so distractingly handsome…or single.

In the wake of his ex-wife’s abandonment five years ago, Luke Grayson has been focused on raising his son Ethan. The scars from the split run deep, and Luke hasn’t trusted another woman to come into their lives. But there’s something about the sweet—and sexy—Christie that has him wondering if something’s been missing.

Can new love help lonely hearts find a way? After all, Christmas is a time for magic…

Like most novellas, the story takes place over only a few weeks so you do have to have a little more leniency on how quickly the characters fall in love.  But it’s a Christmas read and, like a good Hallmark movie, it’s kinda to be expected and I think that Wyatt’s lovely writing helps make it work even more.

Luke is all sexy handyman with a heart of gold.  He’s a dedicated single dad and doing an awesome job of raising a fantastic kid all on his own. He’s sweet, kind and funny, a little gun-shy for getting involved again but willing to take a chance when he meets a woman that he’s got a strong connection with.  It’s brave to put himself out there and Wyatt could have easily gone with him being too scared but I’m impressed that she chose to not go the obvious route.

Christie on the other hand has been burned recently and is very hesitant to get involved, especially with a family man.  An incident in her past has made her feel unworthy of such a loving and good family unit.  As she spends time with Luke, and his son, she knows that she needs to tell him but it’s not easy for her.

When things do come out I think that Luke handles it very well.  He’s obviously (and realistically) upset but he’s a good man and once he’s had time to think things through his good heart overrules his hurt feelings.  I love how he goes about winning her over again.  It’s so sweet and perfect and just made me smile.

Book Review, If Santa Were a Cowboy, Melissa Cutler

cover97205-mediumIf Santa Were a Cowboy

by Melissa Cutler

This Christmas, Santa wears a Stetson.

Paul Savage loves Christmas at Briscoe Ranch Resort, when he gets to take a break from being a back country guide to play Santa in the resort’s lobby and talk to kids about toys. The last thing he expects is his high school crush to come waltzing in as his new assistant photographer, wheeling a suitcase that’s more naughty than nice.

Kelly Walker is a disaster. All she’d wanted was to spice up her life by saying ‘yes’ to every opportunity, which is when the universe started pelting her with ‘no’s.’ So when she comes across a job listing for a holiday photographer working with the sweet, scrawny boy whose advances she’d laughed off in high school, she jumps on the chance to turn her bad Karma around by giving Paul a second chance.

Trouble is, Paul’s anything but scrawny anymore, and his cowboy swagger throws her grand plans for a loop—especially when he tempts her with a red hot proposition of his own. Kelly’s in way over her head, but as she gets swept up in the magic of Briscoe Ranch’s holiday charms—and Paul’s—could Kelly’s year of ‘no’s’ be leading up to the ‘yes’ of a lifetime?

I found this novella to be sweet with a middlin’ heat level … although, I gotta say that when you show up with a Nice suitcase and a Naughty suitcase that I’d expect that we’d at least get a little play with the things in toy chest? 🙂   I know that it falls in the whole Santa and Christmas thing but I was kinda hoping for at least a little more steam out of all the goodies she brought.

But overall that was my only complaint – the characters are enjoyable, the story complete, and the ending works without feeling rushed.  The length of the book is helped by the fact that these two were friends (of a sort) years ago and even though they have changed over time the closeness they had helps give them a good foundation to work with.

I know that a lot of reviewers are complaining about the lie that Kelly tells, which is more of an omission because she’s embarrassed and doesn’t want him to know how she’s screwed up.  Which is totally understandable.  Here she is with a guy that had a crush on her when she was one of the most popular girls in school but he was a nerdy outsider and now he’s the one who is all hot with his life together while she’s feeling kicked around.  Why would you want to admit to that?  Especially with the embarrassment factor thrown in.  I’d find it hard to own up to as well.

Now, granted, he’s amazingly understanding and forgiving once everything does come out.  He’s not perfect but he’s still the sweet, nice guy he was all those years ago.  (Just now in an amazingly sexy package.)  You can totally understand why she wants a chance with him, and I appreciate that she wanted that chance before she found out what a hottie he’d become.  Makes her at least a little less shallow than she used to be  🙂

She’s not perfect, but Kelly is real.  And while there may be a little of him finally getting his dream girl in Paul’s reaction to her showing up, I’d like to think he’s the better man he seems to be and he truly does understand the real her and that’s the girl he’s falling for.

Book Review, Holiday with a Twist, Shannon Stacey

cover98234-mediumHoliday with a Twist

by Shannon Stacey

New York Times bestselling author Shannon Stacey celebrates the season in this brand-new holiday novella

After a messy breakup, Leigh Holloway is ready to start her life over. Until her parents put the family home on the market and call her back for one final, memory-making Christmas. The last thing she wants to do is deprive her mom of the perfect holiday, so she’ll lie her way through the visit and worry about her future in the New Year. Too bad the only bar in town is owned by a guy she seriously wronged in high school.

Leigh’s best friend broke Croy Dawson’s heart, and Croy knows it was Leigh’s fault. They’ve never liked each other, but Croy isn’t cruel: he’d never turn away a pretty woman in need of some family-Christmas fortification. He doesn’t expect her to drink just enough candy-cane martinis to tell him her secrets—and he definitely doesn’t expect to get caught up in her holiday madness.

Despite the surprising love and laughter, Croy and Leigh can’t escape the truth: he can’t walk away from his family obligations and she has a life and career to reboot. But anything is possible if your holiday comes with a twist…

As part of my review process I usually just take a quick look to see what other people say about a book.  And I was a little surprised on this one.  I saw some complaints about a couple of things that just didn’t bother me – first is the length and second is Leigh’s lie.

There is a note in my copy that states that the book will end about the 80% mark.  I guess some people judge how the story is going by how far into it they are?  Kinda makes sense.  If you look down and see you are at 75% but it seems to be wrapping up you might wonder what is going to happen to keep it going.  For me, though, I just want a story that is complete and doesn’t seem rushed, especially in a novella, which this one does very well.  I understand both Croy & Leigh, where they are coming from and where they are going and the way they get there.  I really fell for both of them and how they get to know each other again, falling in love but being too scared to speak up about what they want.  It is handled very realistically and flows well, even with the shorter length of a novella.

The second issue seemed to be why Leigh keeps her single & unemployed state from her family.  But, for me, she explains it very well and it works in the story.  While we may not make the same choice, it is understandable why she does it.  As they start to fall for each other her silence may not be something Croy likes but he also understands.  And it isn’t the big make or break thing that it could be – there is no big drama over cheating or him trying to make a play for a taken woman.  Instead, since it is just between them, it adds a certain bit intimacy to their growing feelings and a kind of compression on the time it takes them to fall in love.  In some short stories the length of pages can cause you to feel like the romance itself is rushed and not believable but here – with the confidentiality and the way they spend time together, added to the fact that they used to be close friends – it doesn’t feel hurried at all.

All around, Holiday with a Twist is a sweet addition to your holiday season reading.

Review:

Let me start by saying I was REALLY looking forward to getting my hands on this book.  I’ve read the first two books (although it isn’t required because this will mostly stand on its own) and I was super curious to find out all of Garrett’s secrets 🙂

Returning readers know that he’s hiding something but we aren’t really sure what and I think that Scott handles it well.  He’s not James Bond but he’s hiding things for a reason.  Unfortunately his last outing ended badly so he’s home to recover and recenter.  What he doesn’t expect, but something he’s going to take full advantage of, is sharing his brother’s cabin with his crush.

Tyler is also in Stanford Creek to get his feet back under him after a very public, and very embarrassing, scandal.  He thought he’d be spending most of it alone, with a few visits with his old bandmates, but he finds himself in close company with a very rugged and handsome guy.  Getting involved might not be smart for either of them but they have a connection that can’t be ignored.

I will say that there are two things that I feel weren’t delivered as well as they could have been.  The first is the life-threatening situation that is suggested in the blurb.  There is some danger related to Garrett’s job but it doesn’t take up very many pages, so don’t expect a lot of it.  Instead we focus on Garrett and Tyler getting to know one another, opening up about themselves, and exploring their growing friendship and the attraction between them.  Which I really appreciated – that slow build to something special.

The other is related to Tyler.  He seems to have some anxiety issues  which is what sends him running, and while he & his brother understand how to address it, it’s not as developed as it could have been.  What it does give us is a look at the bond between the twins, a closeness that is so touching and continues even across the miles.

I’m definitely curious where Scott takes us next.  She’s fantastic at creating well-matched couples with emotional journeys so she’s bound to keep putting out delightful reads.

Book Review, D.B. Sieders, Firestorm, Southern Elemental Guardians series

I am so happy to be able to once again bring you this series.  If you like paranormal romances then this is a must read.  Make sure you hit the bottom of this post for your way to get a chance to get free reads!

*****

In Firestorm (Southern Elemental Guardians Book 3), Wind and Fire Collide in a Storm of Mythic Proportions

Mermaids and water elemental guardians have held center stage until now, and while they make an appearance in Book 3, Firestorm is all about air and fire. Air elemental guardian Bruce made a great wingman in the first two books—he’s one of those surprise characters who started out as a subplot in Book 1 and managed to run away with every scene in which he appeared. As the hero of Firestorm, readers will finally understand what motivates his quest to bring positivity and light to those in his circle and what drives his mercurial nature.

Rogue Phoenix Serafina, his heroine, has spent a lifetime suppressing her connection fire out of fear. Her protective instincts are a strong as Bruce’s, common ground that brings them together in spite of their vastly different natures. They’ll need that common ground if they’re to stop rebellious air elementals from exploiting the power of the Phoenix to destroy earth’s elemental balance—especially as they’re growing attraction heightens the stakes.

Excerpt:

Well, speak of the devil.

Bruce blended so well in the shadows she almost missed him. Wings wrapped around his body like a blanket, he still shivered. Dark smudges rested below his closed eyes. Must’ve been a long night for him, and his tight jaw and furrowed brows spoke volumes about the concerns he carried with him into a fitful slumber.

Well no wonder. What little Lorelei had shared about Bruce’s sister had Sera worried about his visit. Perhaps he’d received disturbing news about Brandt, too. Gods, she was tempted to jerk him awake and grill him for details, but he clearly needed rest.

He needed comfort, too.

This fascinating, playful, high-handed and gentle by turns creature encompassed unexpected depths he kept well-hidden, but beneath the veneer of carefree mischief maker, he’d proven a capable and determined leader, a protector, a source of irritating yet effective motivation, and a generous spirit. He’d had a hand in bringing Lorelei and Vincent together, as well as Lorelei’s sister and her consort—probably countless others based on the stories Lorelei shared with her. Sylphs were famous purveyors of happiness, light, and love.

Who gives him happiness, light, or love?

Perhaps she could do that for him, at least in this moment. After all he’d done for her, it was the least she could offer, and at no personal sacrifice. She wanted him, too, and the comfort and light he could give her.

Sera settled beside him, careful not to disturb his sleep, wrapped arms and wings around him, and planted a gentle kiss on his cheek. Her yelp of surprise morphed into a breathy sigh when he rolled and gripped her in a fierce embrace. She hadn’t meant to wake him.

Wait, he wasn’t awake. Long-lashed lids fluttered but didn’t open. No, he’d reached for her in his dream, clinging to her in the midst of whatever storm tormented his mind. Was it her he wanted, or just a warm body?

She ran her hands over his powerful shoulders, caressing the juncture between shoulder blade and wing. A shuddering sigh and groan of delight from the Sylph rewarded her efforts. Hmm, she could grow addicted to that sort of response. But she needed to make certain he knew to whom he responded.

“Wake up, sleeping Prince,” she whispered, caressing his face from high cheekbones down along a strong jaw. Those lips, normally curled into a smirk, had softened in sleep and proved irresistible. She moved closer, nuzzling his neck and running her lips over his skin, skin graced with the scents of springtime’s new life carried on a cool breeze. “Wake up and I’ll kiss you.”

He opened his eyes, his strange and mesmerizing yellow gaze filled with confusion and heartbreaking despair that morphed into longing and the unbearable beauty of hope. “Am I dreaming?”

“No,” she whispered.

“Then kiss me, Serafina.”

Review:

It’s easier to state this up front – I will reference the other books in the series in my review, however this one can stand alone so don’t worry if this is where you decide to start.  For those of you who have been reading this series, I’m sure you’ve been just as anxious as I have to see cocky (but still loveable) Bruce meet his match.  I even mentioned it in my review for Lorelei’s Lyric, but I definitely didn’t see Serafina coming … and neither did he  🙂

Like with the other books, Sieders gives readers a wonderful complex world – not just with there paranormal element but the personal as well as the political.  There’s a lot of inner-workings between the different factions of the elementals and she does a great job of describing it in a way that is pretty easy to apply to society today without getting overly preachy.  It helps you see not only their world in a way that you can understand but also gives you a chance to look at your own a little differently as well.

While there is danger and intrigue over the Phoenix resurrection & potential apocalypse, there’s also a lot of drama with Bruce and Sera.  He’s been carrying a lot of guilt over some decisions he’s made throughout his very long life.  While she’s spent her much shorter one living in fear and hiding who she is, never really living.  But meeting each other, and the unrest that has caused it, puts them in a situation where they could help each other address their troubles.  And find themselves falling in love at a time when they least expect it.

While this one came off as a little more traditional in the paranormal romance genre than the first two books, Sieders still delivers a well-written and intriguing supernatural world with a plot that pulls you in and characters that keep you turning pages until the very end.  I know there’s more to come and I’m intrigued to see what direction she’s decides to take her stories next.

(Make sure you look below to see how you can get a copy of Three Wishes, Southern Elemental Guardians Book 2.5 – one of those in-betweener stories that is perfect to give you a little more about the world you’ve grown to love and also a tiny peek at what’s to come here in book 3 … it’s not necessary to read it, or any of the other stories, to enjoy Firestorm since it can easily stand on its own.  But why wouldn’t you want to get even more of this fun series and its entertaining characters.)

Excerpt:

Chapter One

TRUMAN GRITT LOCKED the door to Whiskey Automotive and stepped into the stormy September night. Sheets of rain blurred his vision, instantly drenching his jeans and T-shirt. A slow smile crept across his face as he tipped his chin up, soaking in the shower of freedom. He made his way around the dark building and climbed the wooden stairs to the deck outside his apartment. He could have used the interior door, but after being behind bars for six long years, Truman took advantage of the small pleasures he’d missed out on, like determining his own schedule, deciding when to eat and drink, and standing in the fucking rain if he wanted to. He leaned on the rough wooden railing, ignoring the splinters of wood piercing his tattooed forearms, squinted against the wetness, and scanned the cars in the junkyard they used for parts—and he used to rid himself of frustrations. He rested his leather boot on the metal box where he kept his painting supplies. Truman didn’t have much—his old extended-cab truck, which his friend Bear Whiskey had held on to for him while he was in prison, this apartment, and a solid job, both of which were compliments of the Whiskey family. The only family he had anymore.

Emotions he didn’t want to deal with burned in his gut, causing his chest to constrict. He turned to go inside, hoping to outrun thoughts of his own fucked-up family, whom he’d tried—and failed—to save. His cell phone rang with his brother’s ringtone, “A Beautiful Lie” by 30 Seconds to Mars.

“Fuck,” he muttered, debating letting the call go to voicemail, but six months of silence from his brother was a long time. Rain pelleted his back as he pressed his palm to the door to steady himself. The ringing stopped, and he blew out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d trapped inside. The phone rang again, and he froze.

He’d just freed himself from the dredges of hell that he’d been thrown into in an effort to save his brother. He didn’t need to get wrapped up in whatever mess the drug-addicted fool had gotten himself into. The call went to voicemail, and Truman eyed the metal box containing his painting supplies. Breathing like he’d been in a fight, he wished he could paint the frustration out of his head. When the phone rang for the third time in as many minutes, the third time since he was released from prison six months ago, he reluctantly answered.

“Quincy.” He hated the way his brother’s name came out sounding like the enemy. Quincy had been just a kid when Truman went to prison. Heavy breathing filled the airwaves. The hairs on Truman’s forearms and neck stood on end. He knew fear when he heard it. He could practically taste it as he ground his teeth together.

“I need you,” his brother’s tortured voice implored.

Need me? Truman had hunted down his brother after he was released from prison, and when he’d finally found him, Quincy was so high on crack he was nearly incoherent—but it didn’t take much for fuck off to come through loud and clear. What Quincy needed was rehab, but Truman knew from his tone that wasn’t the point of the call.

Before he could respond, his brother croaked out, “It’s Mom. She’s really bad.”

Fuck. He hadn’t had a mother since she turned her back on him more than six years ago, and he wasn’t about to throw away the stability he’d finally found for the woman who’d sent him to prison and never looked back.

He scrubbed a hand down his rain-soaked face. “Take her to the hospital.”

“No cops. No hospitals. Please, man.”

A painful, high-pitched wail sounded through the phone.

“What have you done?” Truman growled, the pit of his stomach plummeting as memories of another dark night years earlier came rushing in. He paced the deck as thunder rumbled overhead like a warning. “Where are you?”

Quincy rattled off the address of a seedy area about thirty minutes outside of Peaceful Harbor, and then the line went dead.

Truman’s thumb hovered over the cell phone screen. Three little numbers—9-1-1— would extricate him from whatever mess Quincy and their mother had gotten into. Images of his mother spewing lies that would send him away and of Quincy, a frightened boy of thirteen, looking devastated and childlike despite his near six-foot stature, assailed him.

Push the buttons.

Push the fucking buttons.

He remembered Quincy’s wide blue eyes screaming silent apologies as Truman’s sentence was revealed. It was those pleading eyes he saw now, fucked up or not, that had him trudging through the rain to his truck and driving over the bridge, leaving Peaceful Harbor and his safe, stable world behind.

Review:

Truman has sacrificed a lot for his family, even going to prison for a crime he didn’t commit.  His life up to this point left him with a lot of baggage.  He’s strong but still battling his past … and then suddenly he finds himself as father figure to his two young siblings.  The day they come into his life is his luckiest for a lot of reasons – one of which is Gemma.

Gemma’s upbringing may have had all the comforts that money can buy but it was cold and lonely.  She’s determined to live life on her own terms and meeting Truman in the middle of the night, looking lost as he tries to shop for two small children, sets her on a course she never saw coming.

Even though they come from completely opposite places, Gemma and Truman are absolutely darling together.  He’s dedicated, protective and loving of those that he lets into his life.  She’s supportive and caring, just what he needs, especially when things seem to be out of control.  They have a lot to work through, both internal and external, before they can find a HEA but they are strong enough that if they believe in themselves and each other they can make it.  And two absolutely adorable kids that make it even more worthwhile.

Foster once again brings her readers stunning characters and a story that is fascinating but not overly dramatic.  There is both struggle and happiness, moments to make you sigh and those that might make you blush, a touch of humor and lots of feel-good moments.  She gives you a hero that is breathtaking in his sexiness & his devotion and a heroine who understands him & can help him through difficult moments.  After everything Tru’s been through you can’t help but root for him to finally have something amazingly good in his life.

Angel's Lake series, Book Review, Falling for Kate, Jody Holford

cover100771-mediumFalling for Kate

An Angel’s Lake Novella

by Jody Holford

He needs a nanny.

She needs a job.

Hoping to open a clothing boutique in her hometown, Kate Aarons is ready for the next phase of her life. Before she can set her dreams in motion, she needs a job to get her shop up and running.

Tired of his ex’s unpredictable and transient lifestyle, single father, Elliot Peters, wants to give his twin daughters a stable life. Going from sometime dad to full-time dad is harder than he expected. But sweet, sexy Kate could be the answer he needs.

Working for Elliot proves to be the perfect situation. But when sparks fly between them, Kate worries about finding her place in a ready-made family. Can Elliott convince Kate that forever started the second he fell for her?

This is my first in the Angel’s Lake series but it easily stands on its own.  It looks like Kate’s sisters have stories and there are some mention of the events from them in this book, although Holford does a good job of keeping new readers up to speed.

There isn’t a lot of drama here, which I appreciate.  Kate and Elliot have known each other for a while, with an ignored attraction bubbling just under the surface.  They’ve never been at a point in their lives where it was something they could act on … until now.  It’s sweet to be there with them as they finally give in and start exploring their growing feelings.  As a couple they are funny and sweet – they click so well and genuinely like & understand each other, as well as throw off a few sparks 🙂

Of course, it’s not all flowers and chocolate.  There are some logistic issues involving his kids and their associated friends & family (like the fact that Elliot works for Kate’s brother-in-law and also has a drama-filled relationship with his ex).  It never gets too angsty, though, just enough to make things believable and have you smiling when they finally get to that HEA moment.

If this is an indication of what Holford’s work is like, I’m adding her to my go-to author list.  The writing flows really well, the characters are charming & easy to like, and the story is interesting & fun to read.  Feel good and entertaining … my idea of a great book!

Totally an accident but we’ve got a story with a homecoming for a Marine for Veteran’s Day (and just after their birthday too).

I’ve read all four books in this series and I’m pleased to say that Rains is still going strong.

This year, she swears, is going be different. And that’s why, at a charity auction she’s throwing on-base, she buys herself a man.

Sergeant Troy Matthews insists that he’s not for sale. His time is, though, and he’s happy to donate it. Happier still when he learns the identity of the winning bidder: the redhead with the killer good looks and smart mouth who runs the veteran’s center. Excerpt:

“So there’s one thing I now know about you. You’re a good liar.” Allison folded her arms at her chest.

“Good, maybe. But I value honesty. Sometimes lying to someone is for their own good, though. A little white lie never really hurt anyone. Here’s one for you,” he leaned in closer and lowered his voice, “I have absolutely no interest in dating you, either.”

Her cheeks flushed.

“And I don’t think you’re the most beautiful woman in this room, and the thought of taking you out does not appeal to me whatsoever.” He shook his head. “Nope, not one little bit.”

She smiled. “Now I know two things about you. You lie well and you’re a smooth talker. So, do you agree to my proposal?”

Troy could just say yes, but he was enjoying engaging her in a conversation. “You know, when I was kid, Christmas was always magical. I’d sit with the toy catalog and create this huge, mile-long list of the things I wanted. I never got so excited about a pencil and paper.”

“Did you get everything on the list?” she asked.

“Usually.”

“So your family had money?”

He nodded. His family practically owned the town he’d grown up in. He didn’t know what it felt like to want for something until his cousin Dale had died in 9-11, the deciding factor in him joining the military. “I figure the more money raised for those kids, the better their Christmas will be.”

“That’s my goal. I want this to be the best Christmas Mercy’s kids have ever had.”

“So, if I have to take you out . . .” He trailed off, smiling at her.

“We’re just going to talk. Have a meal or something together. No kissing, no handholding.”

Troy held up his hands. “I’m an honorable guy. I don’t force myself on women. Truth is, I usually have to fight them off.” He winked again.

“And you can’t act like that when you meet my mother.”

“Like what?” he asked.

“All flirty and charming. She’ll never believe that I’d fall for someone like that.”

He tried not to take offense because no matter what she was saying, she was attracted to him. He could see it in her dilated pupils and the way her chest rose just slightly under her racing pulse. “No? What kind of guy exactly would you fall for?”

Allison looked around the room. There was still a nice-sized crowd laughing and mingling. Christmas music filled the merry air. “I wouldn’t fall for any kind of guy right now. That’s why I’m pretending with you.”

Review:

Like with Welcoming the Bad Boy, this one seemed a little easier read (more traditional contemporary romance).  While it does have a lot of heart and a lovely story about two people meeting and falling in love, the first couple of stories of the series seemed to have more angst to them.  Mind you I’m not complaining, some times you need that and sometimes you don’t  🙂

But the upside is that Rains doesn’t lose her deft touch at writing involved stories just because she leaves out some of the soul-searching and drama.  She still gives readers fully developed and wonderfully crafted characters.  The narrative is engrossing and I found myself reading it in about a day because it was so easy to get into and so hard to put down.

Allison needs a pretend boyfriend because she’s got one of those loving families that likes to get a little too involved in her life.  Her mom is on her about settling down but when she brings a beau over then her mom’s psychologist skills come out and she tells Allison exactly what’s wrong with him … darned if you do, darned if you don’t, right?  The family is very loving but you can totally understand how Allison finds herself in this situation.  Recently burned, though, she’s not in the market for a real boyfriend, which is where Troy comes in.

Troy doesn’t have anything against love or relationships, he just not looking for either right now.  But he’s sure not going to ignore the intense attraction between him and Allison.  I love that there isn’t anything really wrong with Troy – he’s just a happy-go-lucky guy who hasn’t yet found a woman he wants to get serious with.  He’s sweet, kind, sexy, hard-working, caring, blah blah blah, ya know just perfect.

The slow build between the two as Allison resists her attraction to Troy and he enjoys flirting with her just to see her react is fantastically entertaining.  They dance around the issue with humor and fun but you know that they are totally getting together.

There are some serious moments – the interactions with their families (Troy has his own troubles at home), orphans without toys, and a burglar stealing from people in Allison’s neighborhood – but it all works together very nicely with the playfulness, heat and charm of them falling in love.
