Love the Game series

by Becca Seymour

Blurb:

Camden Crawford knows how to take a hit.

As the thirtysomething captain of the Exeter Seagulls, heโ€™s built a career on strength, silence, and shielding his emotions as ruthlessly as he does his teammates. But when an injury rocks his teamโ€”and a series of frustrating media storms threaten to unravel his legacyโ€”Cam finds himself one mistake away from losing everything heโ€™s worked for. The last thing he needs is
a distraction.

Enter Brentย sunshine in tattooed skin, newly settled in Exeter, and a little too perceptive for Camโ€™s comfort.

Brent came to England chasing purpose. What he didnโ€™t expect was a brooding rugby player with eyes like winter and walls like stone. But the chemistry? Immediate. Irresistible. And very, very mutual. Brent isnโ€™t afraid to get under Camdenโ€™s skinโ€”and heโ€™s definitely not afraid to stay there.

When a one-time tattoo consult turns into stolen kisses, slow mornings, and a summer of something that feels a lot like more, both men are forced to face the Falling for each other wasnโ€™t in the game plan. And neither is what happens when the spotlight turns on their relationship.

With mounting pressure, cross-continental tours, and past insecurities clawing their way to the surface, Camden has to decide if love is a risk heโ€™s finally ready to take. And Brent? Heโ€™s ready to prove that heโ€™s not just a distractionโ€”heโ€™s the reason to stay.

A swoony, slow-burn MM sports romance full of banter, bruises, and unexpected tenderness. grumpy/sunshine vibes, emotional intimacy, found family, a meddling little brother, and the hottest โ€œoops, I sent you a sex tape by accidentโ€ moment in romance.

(Full Tilt is book five in a brand-new sports romance shared world. Featuring books from Willow Thomas, Becca Steele, Jodi Oliver, EM Denning, Becca Jackson, EM Lindsey, and Cora Rose.)

*****

Review:

Cam has been burned in the past when it comes to his sexuality and really struggles to open up to someone else. Brent wonderfully supports Cam. Showing him the patience, understanding, and support that he needs. And it is beautiful to see as he brings big, broody, grumpy Cam around to seeing how good it is between them.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read one of Seymour’s book and I have no idea why! I love the way that she balances the angst, heat, & feels and gives us a satisfying story without a lot of hulabaloo at the end. Be ready for a slow burn, with a mix of humor & fun to go with the growth & sweetness.

(This is the first in this interconnected world that I’ve read and I didn’t have any issues at all so definitely can stand on its own.)

Becoming Us

True-Blue #3

byย Becca Seymour

Publisher: Rainbow Tree Publishing

Release Date: Saturday, November 23 2019

Blurb:

Catch up with Kirkby residents Scott and Davis as they navigate through the ups and downs of fatherhood, relationships, and juggling… balls.

In two years, it’s clear love can last, just as it can grow.

Davis’s business remains successful, Scott’s clinic is going strong, and Libby is happy and content.

But that doesn’t mean real life is always perfect, nor does it mean fatherhood isn’t as exhausting as it is wonderful.

Needing a break from their daily routines, Davis and Scott head away for a weekend of uninhibited fun. With lots of laughter and dancing, Davis has never seen Scott so relaxed and comfortable in public.

And he’s not quite sure how to handle that.

Worried that life in Kirkby is holding Scott back, Davis nearly makes the biggest mistake of his life.

But Scott has other ideas. He doesn’t need saving. What he needs is his man to step up and fight for their family and their future.

And he has just the plan to do it.

Excerpt:

A wide smile broke free on Ian. โ€œDancing would be great. I look forward to getting out once a week, blowing off some steam. Sometimes a dance floor is all I want, you know?โ€ He downed his drink. โ€œWork can be hell, so itโ€™s good to wind down.โ€

I eyed his tight tee over his larger-than-average muscles, wondering what he did for a living and if those muscles were part of it. I also wondered why Ian didnโ€™t kick the other dudeโ€™s ass.

Davis, as if reading my mind, said, โ€œYeah, it is. Weโ€™ve a little girl and both work long hours, so we know all too well how important it is to get away.โ€ Davis placed his hand on my thigh and squeezed a little. Heat touched my cheeks at the contact. โ€œWe donโ€™t do this enough, thatโ€™s for sure. What is it you do?โ€

โ€œOh wow, a daughter, huh. Bet she keeps you busy.โ€ Genuine interest lifted his tone. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m a nurse. I work at the local hospital here, in the emergency room.โ€

Huh. I cast a glimpse at Davis and saw his eyes widen a little.

โ€œNo shit,โ€ he said. โ€œHonestly, Iโ€™d never have guessed it.โ€ His eyes roamed Ianโ€™s broad chest. I got it. I did. I coughed lightly and raised my brow in Davisโ€™s direction. He looked at me and laughed. โ€œAs if you werenโ€™t doing and thinking the same.โ€ He rolled his eyes at me. Bastard was spot-on. Asshole.

A snort had us both looking at Ian. โ€œI like to work out.โ€ A shit-eating grin greeted us. โ€œBut Iโ€™m also a healer and a lover.โ€ He shrugged. โ€œI donโ€™t do aggressive bullshit.โ€

โ€œYeah, for sure. Scott here is a veterinarian. Owns his own practice.โ€ My chest puffed out a little at the pride I heard in his voice. โ€œThough he can be a real asshole as well as a healer.โ€ His loud laugh followed.

โ€œHey.โ€ I quirked my brow at him.

*****

Review:

When we originally got to know Scott, he was newly out and not very comfortable with it. While hiding from who he was, he’d been taking out his negative feelings about himself on Carter but luckily Davis saw that there was a better man underneath the fear. The two grew close, Scott learned to accept himself, and they’ve been happy together for two years. But as things become too comfortable Davis wonders if their little world is enough …

Being a shorter story doesn’t stop Seymour from delivering on the feels. There’s so much love between them and they’ve managed to make a nice, happy, comfortable life for themselves. It doesn’t keep them from having issues but they are addressed in realistic and satisfying ways.

(One of my favorite things is when we can catch up with couples from previous stories. With Becoming Us, we not only get a chance to get an update on Scott and Davis but a little bit of a look at what is coming next. And I’m SO looking forward to that one.)

Excerpt:

I was thirty-three years old and still had no clue who I was.

Just two steps and Iโ€™d be able to breathe again.

One.

I clutched the handle and yanked the door open. Fresh air greeted me. I stepped into the darkness and pulled the door quietly closed behind me, then looked around the fenced backyard, only seeing the side panels and nothing beyond the darkness. My gaze settled on a couple of chairs. While it wasnโ€™t complete escape, it gave me time to catch my breath and get my head straight.

Easing into the wooden chair, I leaned back, stretching out my neck and glancing up at the star-filled sky. With no lights on in the yard and just the faint glow filtering out from the busy kitchen, I was able to focus on the tiny specks overhead. I released a heavy exhale, pulling the calmness of the outside into me. I shouldnโ€™t have come. Damn, I should have been at least two thousand miles away by now, away from this tiny town that threatened to split apart my whole world.

Claws on the wooden deck, a not-so-soft grunt and sigh, and I glanced to my right to see Carter and Tannerโ€™s monster dog, Rex, ambling over to me. The first couple of times Iโ€™d met Rex at the veterinary clinic, it was no surprise to Carter or me that the Ridgeback had taken an instant dislike to me. Hell, I didnโ€™t even like myself most of the time. But as he walked toward me, I no longer tensed in fear. This was the third visit Iโ€™d made to Carterโ€™s, and it seemed Rex had had a change of heart.

He huffed as he sat next to me, his large head immediately landing on my thighs. My first real smile of the night spread across my lips, and I reached out both hands and rubbed behind Rexโ€™s ears. โ€œHey there, mutt.โ€ I rubbed a bit harder, and he moaned happily. I snorted. โ€œYou like that, huh?โ€ Rex tilted his head and leaned his right ear into my palm. โ€œYou know, bud, I think youโ€™ve got the right idea.โ€ He blew heavily out of his snout, and I laughed, the sound filling the quiet space. โ€œLifeโ€™s a hell of a lot easier if youโ€™ve got no balls at all to lead you around and confuse the heck out of you.โ€

A snort-laugh from out of the darkness had me tensing. I squinted, looking toward the end of the yard. After a moment, my eyes adjusted and I saw a man looming, his figure moving closer until he stepped into the faint light.

Damn. So much for alone.

Rexโ€™s head flipped to the side to look at the guy coming toward me. He grunted again and then thumped his head back down onto my thighs before nudging my hand for me to continue.

I started to rub, not as invested, nor as relaxed. With my jaw locked, I risked a glance at the guy. Light spilled onto the strangerโ€™s face, highlighting his strong jawline. While I couldnโ€™t see the color of his eyes, I did see the creases surrounding them. It immediately made him seem approachable and friendly. As he moved closer, a small smile lifted his mouth. My gaze landed on the slight curve of his lips before traveling back to his eyes. They were brown, but in the dull light, I couldnโ€™t tell the exact shade or depth.

Friendly, he most definitely was, if his smile and the โ€œHeyโ€ he offered me were anything to go by. But he also looked tired as hell.

I cleared my throat, suddenly aware Iโ€™d stayed quiet for a few seconds too long. โ€œHey.โ€ My voice was gravelly and sounded unnaturally deep.

The guy paused in front of me, his hands dipping into his jeans pockets. He was quiet for a beat, seeming to contemplate what to say.

โ€œYou know Rex then?โ€

I nodded and then took a glance at the large head resting on my lap. With a small nod, I smiled. โ€œYeah. He finally likes me, so Iโ€™m taking it as a win that weโ€™re friends.โ€

The brown-eyed manโ€™s head tilted slightly, his gaze scanning my face a moment before his eyes returned to mine. โ€œSo youโ€™re a friend of Carterโ€™s?โ€

A humorless snort burst free, not enough to startle Rex, but enough for the guy to raise his brows. I cleared my throat again, not especially liking the fact that it seemed to be closing up and becoming uncomfortably dry in front of this guy. โ€œWell, sort of. We used to work together.โ€

โ€œNot anymore?โ€

I bit back the bitter retort dancing on my tongue, tempted to ask if that wasnโ€™t what โ€œused toโ€ explicitly meant. There was no need for me to be so defensive or any bigger of an asshole than I already had a reputation for being.

โ€œNope. Just trying to figure out my next move.โ€ I clamped my mouth shut, wondering why Iโ€™d shared so much. He sat on the lounger beside me, stopping my analysis. โ€œPlease, take a seat.โ€ Damn, I really needed to learn to keep my mouth shut and stop being a dickhead. โ€œSorry.โ€ I threw him a small grimace, noticing both of his perfectly arched brows were lifted, his attention solely on me. There was also a small smile on his lips. I was positive I saw it twitch.

โ€œHey, I can leave.โ€

Though, he stayed put, making no indication he planned on moving. He didnโ€™t even shrug or twitch as he spoke.

While solitude had been what Iโ€™d craved, I was smart enough to recognize that just maybe not being alone was a good thing. Being alone, I was discovering, was not helpful at all. All it did was give me too much time with my thoughts. And that had a habit of screwing with my head. While Iโ€™d sought the quiet, especially since my blowout with Carter a while back, I recognized how dangerous isolation could be. Loneliness was a slippery slope.

Review:

This is a follow up to Seymourโ€™s Let Me Show You and while it can stand on its own you really have a better understanding of the characters if youโ€™ve read the first story.ย  This one is more of a redemption story for Scott โ€ฆ and a reward for everyone who wanted Davis to find his own HEA.

I think my favorite part is that Scottโ€™s behavior from the first story isnโ€™t swept under the rug.ย  Even though Carter has decided to forgive and forget, Scott (and those that know what he did) still has to come to terms with what he did and what it means for his future.ย  Itโ€™s not easy for Scott, but with help he manages to make himself into someone he can face in the mirror again.

Davis is very supportive and understanding.ย  I love his truth first attitude and how he sometimes is a little too blunt, especially for poor confused & repressed Scott.ย  But heโ€™s willing to be there for him, give him the time he needs to figure things out, and take slow steps together to make a solid friendship (and later something more).

For a new author, Seymour is certainly good at her craft.ย  Her books go from lighthearted and humorous to overflowing with emotion and back again with ease.ย  And her characters are just so darn appealing (even when they are recovering a**holes)!ย  ย She says there are no plans for any more stories in this series, but with skills like herโ€™s Iโ€™m sure that whatever direction she goes will be fabulous.ย  Sheโ€™s definitely going on my must read list ๐Ÿ™‚

Becca Seymour, Book Review, Let Me Show You

I’m so happy to have Becca Seymour on today to answer a few questions and share her latest book!

*****

  1. When did you know you wanted to write?

Iโ€™ve been writing on and off for the past 15 years, though largely in M/F romance. It wasnโ€™t until I fell in love with LGBT romance about 5 years ago that I finally decided that was where my heart lay, and my proverbial pen took me. While this year Iโ€™m focusing on contemporary romance, a genre I do adore, I plan to writing a mix of genres later in the year for 2020 and 2021 releases.

  1. Do you use a pseudonym? If so, why?

I do, but it isnโ€™t a big secret. Iโ€™m a publisher and editor, and I wanted a semblance of separation between my writing and my business.

  1. Do you ever base your characters on real people? If so, what are the pitfalls youโ€™ve run into doing so?

Sometimes. My characters are often completely fabricated; however, several scenarios they face are often taken from real life. My characters do, however, tend to have similar traits to people I know and sometimes me, especially in relation to humour and sometime gruffness.

  1. How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Anywhere between 2 months and 15 months, depending on the schedule Iโ€™ve set myself and how many WiPs I have. This book took the longest, possibly because it was intended to be a novella for a publishing call, but once the characters came into their own, I knew there was no way that would happen.

  1. Where do you like to write?

On my laptop usually in bed, and usually when I have a super quiet house. I struggle to write when my hubby is home or in the room with me, and honestly, I have zero idea why. He is 100 percent behind me and my writing, and is crazy supportive. I can, however, happily write with my 11-year-old son in the room. Heโ€™s constantly trying to give me ideas and recommendations. Heโ€™s also determined that I name a character after him. I always go wide-eyed at this, reminding him I write romance. He just shrugs and suggests โ€œheโ€ could be a character who doesnโ€™t kiss. Lol. Maybe one day.

  1. How long do you write each day?

Ermโ€ฆ when focused, I write for a couple of hours. When on a self-managed deadline thatโ€™s creeping in fast, Iโ€™ll put more time in over the weekends. I do, however, happily allow life to get in the way, which I donโ€™t regret. Family time, work time, switching off and chilling are really important to me.

  1. What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

I wanted light-hearted, low-angst escapism, and I think I achieved that. Tanner and Carter are both regular guys, with regular jobs, and regular lives. You see the common thread here, right? While I love PNR and at times subgenres that include rock stars and billionaires, etc., rooting for the common guy, getting up close and personal with them, really takes me to my happy place. My aim was to give that to readers too.

  1. If you had the opportunity to live one year of your life over again, which year would you choose, and why?

21 maybe. My last year at university was pretty epic. I had such an amazing time filled with far too many parties and nights out. But every hangover was worth it. I think it was the last truly carefree year I had before the reality of adulthood came knocking and reminded me I needed to step up a little.

  1. What was the first book that made you cry?

Little Women when I was probably 8. This is still hands down one of my favourite books of all time. It made me truly appreciate the written word. From that moment forth, I was an official book addict.

  1. What are some day jobs that you have held?

My first job was a lifeguard. It was great fun. I did that for about 7 years while at school. I did a stint at McDonaldโ€™s at uni, which was an eyeopener, especially for a vegetarian! Lol. I also worked as a bartender for several years part-time too while at uni. My first full-time position was a high school English teacher when I still lived in England. It seems like so long ago. Every position has shaped me to the individual I am today, so zero regrets, and absolutely zero looking back.

Excerpt:

Looking at the caller ID, I greeted, โ€œHey, Mom.โ€

โ€œHey, baby boy.โ€ I smiled. In my late twenties, I was far from a baby, but sheโ€™d once told me that even at fifty Iโ€™d still be her baby. โ€œGood day?โ€

โ€œYep. Not too bad. Nothing too hectic or crazy. You?โ€

โ€œA great one. Your dadโ€™s booked a cruise for our anniversary.โ€ Excitement lit her words. Sheโ€™d been hinting at Dad for a while about a cruise. I was pleased heโ€™d listened. It didnโ€™t take a lot to make my mom happy; she found joy in the smallest of things, so that heโ€™d organized it all was pretty impressive. Mom usually organized everything, so I knew him booking the vacation for them was a big deal.

โ€œThatโ€™s terrific. Caribbean?โ€

She actually squealed down the line. I pulled the phone from my ear and laughed loudly. โ€œYes! Carter, Iโ€™m so excited.โ€

โ€œReally? Iโ€™d never have guessed.โ€

โ€œOh, hush.โ€ She spoke over me as I laughed again. โ€œDonโ€™t sass your mother.โ€

My laughter continued. โ€œNever, Mom. Youโ€™d tan my hide. Wouldnโ€™t dream of it.โ€

โ€œI should think not. So anything new? Any dates?โ€

With a groan, I rubbed my face and then stepped further into the kitchen and pulled out a glass. โ€œMomโ€ฆ,โ€ I sighed.

โ€œWhat? I worry about you. Youโ€™re so far from home and are there all alone.โ€

I poured myself a glass of wine and took a sip. โ€œI know you worry, but honestly, lifeโ€™s good.โ€ Admittedly it would have been nice to hook up, but one, I didnโ€™t do casual and never had, and two, there was no way Iโ€™d tell my mom I was afraid my penis would drop off from lack of use. โ€œThereโ€™s nothing new either, and thatโ€™s okay. Iโ€™m liking the quiet life.โ€

โ€œHmmโ€ฆ.โ€ That was her tell for not being convinced. โ€œYou know, I was talking to Julie last week, and her nephewโ€™s gay.โ€

โ€œMom,โ€ I said with laughter, โ€œhonestly, no hookups. I do not need my mom fixing me up.โ€

She ignored me. โ€œWell, he lives quite far away, but maybe a week of casualโ€”โ€ She cleared her throat. โ€œโ€”sex would do you good.โ€

โ€œJesus, Mom.โ€ I spluttered on my mouthful of wine. Grabbing a towel, I wiped my face, catching the dribble of red wine on my chin, and wiped the countertop Iโ€™d sprayed. โ€œStop. I donโ€™t need you arranging anything, okay? Please tell me youโ€™re listening.โ€ She was quiet. โ€œMom,โ€ I said louder.

โ€œYes, yes, I hear you.โ€ She sighed. โ€œGrandbabies would be nice.โ€

Holy crap on toast! With wide eyes, I looked at the ceiling and counted to five. I then took a big gulp of wine before saying, โ€œMom.โ€

โ€œYes, baby boy?โ€

โ€œI have to go. I need to grab a shower. Iโ€™m expecting someone.โ€

โ€œOohโ€”โ€

โ€œSomeone to fix the house up.โ€ Iโ€™d heard the interest in her tone, the hope in that one syllable.

โ€œOh.โ€ This time her voice dropped. I hated to kill her enthusiasm, but geez, I really needed to get off the phone.

โ€œLove you, tell Dad I love him too. And Iโ€™ll speak to you guys later. Bye, Mom.โ€

โ€œWill do.โ€ Her tone was a bit brighter. โ€œLove you too. Bye, honey.โ€

I disconnected quickly and placed my phone down. My mom, yeah, she was wonderful and drove me to absolute distraction. I knew how lucky I was. Every decision Iโ€™d ever made, my parents had always had my back. They supported me unconditionally. It was just that my mom could be a little extreme at times. I laughed into the empty room. I wouldnโ€™t have it any other way.

Quickly finishing my wine, I looked at the time. I had just fifteen minutes until the contractor was due. Iโ€™d left it late to organize myself, still a little in a tizz after the conversation with my mom and the mention of babies. I glanced around the room at the disorderly mess. Every time I did so, I regretted it.

I detested chaos, and that was what the house felt like. The place was still strewn with my moving boxes, but I had yet to see the point in unpacking. Not necessarily because I planned to move, but rather, the whole house needed a lot of work, so I knew Iโ€™d have to pack my things up for any work on the house to start.

I really hoped this Tanner guy would be the person who could finally help me out. Iโ€™d had two other quotes, one local and one from out of town. Both were crazy high, and neither would be able to start for another five months or so. I was running out of options. This guy had come recommended to me by one of my clients, but I didnโ€™t want to get my hopes up.

I sighed in defeat as I looked around. Iโ€™d have to continue ignoring it all until I finally had the place fixed up. I headed upstairs, careful to miss the couple of steps that had loose boards, and headed to the main bathroom. I had an en suite, but the shower didnโ€™t work, so it was the pearlescent green suite I headed toward. The sickly porcelain made me shudder every time I laid eyes on it. It was clean though, so there was that.

I hopped into the shower, lathered myself up, and quickly rinsed off. That was when I heard the knock at the door. โ€œShoot.โ€ I quickly turned off the taps, stepped out and grabbed a towel. In my haste to get myself together and then answer the door, the dodgy floorboard didnโ€™t even register until my foot slammed through it, snagging my ankle and bringing me to my knees.

I yelled as I fell, and cursed. Wincing, I looked at my predicament, trying to yank my foot out as I did so. A loud groan slipped past my lips. This was no good. I was wedged, and it appeared Iโ€™d lost my towel in my fall. Just great.

Review:

If you love your romance without a lot of angst (which I do most of the time), Seymour delivers beautifully.ย  Tanner and Carter have a fun first meet that kinda makes it hard to ignore their attraction to each other but they do try.ย  Once their feelings overcome that whole contractor/client thing though, it is pretty much a done deal.

Tanner & Carter complement each other quiet well and work to create a nicely-developed relationship.ย  There is a little trouble at work for Carter but he does his best to handle it, with support from Tanner & friends.ย  It adds that little bit of drama to an otherwise smooth read of strangers becoming friends then becoming even more.

If you prefer warm fuzzies (and some heat) to commotion and hullabaloo in your romance,ย Let Me Show You is a perfect choice.ย  With characters to pull for, a romance to give you feels, and enough steam to keep you turning pages, Seymour’s latest has it all.
