Dukes Behaving Badly #2.5

by Megan Frampton

Releasing November 10, 2015

Blurb:

In this Dukes Behaving Badly holiday novella, a young lady entertains a sudden proposal of marriage-to a man she’s only just met.

What does a lady do when a man she’s never seen before offers his hand in marriage? Lady Sophronia Bettesford doesn’t scream and run away. Instead, she accepts the shocking proposition. After all, what’s her other choice? To live with her cousin, caring for six children and a barnyard full of chickens?

James Archer has roamed the world, determined never to settle down. He’s faced danger and disaster…he fears nothing and no one except his mother and her matchmaking ways. So when ordered to attend a Christmastime house party filled with holiday cheer and simpering young misses, he produces a fiancée!

Sophronia and James vow to pretend to be in love for one month. But when they each promise to give each other a Christmas kiss it becomes clear that this pact made out of necessity might just be turning into love.

Excerpt:

She unfolded the often-read letter, suppressing a sigh at her cousin’s crabbed handwriting. Not that handwriting was indicative of a person’s character—that would be their words—but the combination of her cousin’s script and the way he assumed she would be delighted to perform all the tasks he was graciously setting before her, well, that was enough to make her dread the next phase of her life. Which would last until—well, that she didn’t know.

Sophronia was grateful, she was, for being offered a place to live, and she didn’t want to seem churlish. It was just that she had never imagined that the care and feeding of poultry—not to mention six children—would be her fate.

She hadn’t been raised to think too highly of herself, an impoverished earl’s daughter couldn’t, no matter her bloodlines. But she’d thought her father had put by enough money to see her through to find a cottage somewhere, somewhere to live with her books, and her wit, and her faithful maid, after he’d left this mortal coil. But while her father had been very specific when it came to ordering which text of ancient Greek poems would suit his needs the best, he had been less so when it came time to providing for his daughter’s future after his eventual, and inevitable, demise.

He’d left her with practically nothing, in fact.

Hence the chickens.

Which was why she had spent a few precious pennies on a last glass of ale at the coaching inn where she was waiting for the mail coach to arrive and take her to the far reaches of beyond. A last moment of being by herself, being Lady Sophronia, not Sophy the Chicken Lady.

The one without a feather to fly with.

Chuckling at her own wit, she picked her glass up and gave a toast to the as yet imaginary chickens, thinking about how she’d always imagined her life would turn out.

There were no members of the avian community at all in her rosy vision of the future.

Not that she was certain what her rosy vision of the future would include, but she was fairly certain it did not have fowl of any kind.

She shook her head at her own foolishness, knowing she was giving in to self-pity by bemoaning her lot. It was more than many women had, even ladies of her station. She might have to take care of children and chickens—hopefully in that order—but she would have a roof over her head, food to eat, and clothing to wear. Perhaps the holiday season would be one of celebration. Celebrating a roof over her head, for one thing.

“All aboard to Chester,” a voice boomed through the room. Immediately there were the bustling sounds of people getting up, gathering their things, saying their last goodbyes.

Sophronia didn’t have anyone to say goodbye to. Her maid, Maria, had found another position, even though she’d wept and clung to Sophronia until the very last minute. But Sophronia’s cousin had made it very clear the invitation was for one lady in distressed circumstances—namely, Sophoronia—and there was no room nor salary for a lady’s maid.

So she drained her ale and stood, raising up on her tiptoes for one last stretch. As tall as she was, it was difficult for her to retain any kind of comfort in a crowded coach for any period of time, and she knew the journey would be a long one.

That she would be cramped and uncomfortable for longer than the actual coach journey was a truth she was finding it very hard to ignore.

A Protector Series Novel

by Stephanie Reid

Blurb:

Vic Russo is just one of the guys. Except she’s not a guy. A paramedic, affectionately known as Vic within her firehouse, Victoria is a permanent fixture in the friend zone. But when her childhood crush, firefighter Graham McAndrew, becomes single once again, she decides enough is enough. It’s time for Graham to see her as the woman she’s become. There’s only one problem. A photo of her in the arms of another man has captured the nation’s attention.

Jason Meadows is not thrilled to have his police work interrupted by a small media craze. In fact, he’d be content never to see Victoria or that photo-gone-viral again. But a series of fires in town, paired with a growing attraction to the quirky paramedic, make staying away impossible.

Determined to ferret out a potential killer, Jason enlists Victoria’s help as his eyes and ears inside the firehouse. And while threats rise from within, Victoria is forced to choose between the love of her past and the man who’s ignited her fire within.

Excerpt:

The catty female voices returned and Victoria stiffened. They were headed this way. She couldn’t see them around the large fountain, but she could hear them loud and clear.

“All I’m saying is she doesn’t have what it takes to hold that hot cop’s attention. You wait. As soon as I find him, he’ll be wrapped around my little finger.”

Before she could even react, Jason scooped her into his lap, dug his fingers into her short hair and held her face to his. She murmured a small protest against his lips, but quickly realized he was doing this for her. To help her save face in front of those awful women.

She heard a quick intake of breath and knew they’d been stumbled upon. Oh, what she wouldn’t give to turn around and see their faces right now. To see what they thought of her sitting wantonly on Jason’s lap getting the life kissed out of her.

But her thoughts weren’t on them for long. She heard the rustling of clothes and the quick retreat of several pairs of high-heeled feet, but she no longer cared about that, because what had started as a closed-mouth hard kiss was quickly turning into something else.

His hold on her head gentled and the pressure of his mouth lessened until it was little more than a caress. He sampled her lips with a quick lick of his tongue and the groan of pleasure that followed that first taste let her know how much he liked it. He leaned back just enough to search her face with those hypnotic blue eyes of his while he skimmed his thumb over her lower lip. His gaze dropped to her mouth again and she took the lead, leaning in and tasting him for herself.

Salty and a little sweet, he tasted like heaven. She let her tongue explore—timidly at first but growing bolder with each low groan from his throat. He released her head and moved his hands to her lower back, pulling her closer and sliding his hands up her spine. She pressed herself against him, loving the feel of his hard chest against her.

She tried to get lost in the kiss, but doubts began to creep in. A warning voice from the self-preservation quadrant of her brain that said maybe she was reading this situation all wrong. Maybe he hadn’t kissed her out of some romantic, chivalrous inclination. Maybe he just didn’t want those catty bridesmaids to think he was available. Either way, whatever the reason he’d kissed her—to protect her or to free himself from Barbie—it wasn’t because he was interested in her.

But then again, maybe she didn’t care why he was kissing her. All that mattered was that he was, and it felt amazing.

“I think they’re gone now,” she whispered against his lips.

He moved to kiss her neck, slowly making his way down until he reached the top of her butterfly tattoo. “Good.”

Every time she closes her eyes, he’s there…waiting for her.

Working night shift at a mental hospital was never Brandi Connelly’s dream job, but in order to pay her grandmother’s medical bills she’s willing to do whatever she has to. Her new job seems like a piece of cake, there is only one thing keeping her from enjoying it – Draken Barrand, a patient.

Thoughts of her patient haunt her night and day and she’s too embarrassed to tell anyone about the strange dreams she’s having about him. Partly because she’s afraid they will think she’s crazy…mostly because the things that go on while she’s sleeping make her blush.

As the nightly visions become all too real she’s afraid they’re not dreams at all. If these nightly fantasies are real, that means everything her dream lover has told her is real, which means that the little mating ritual she so excitedly participated in was real. Soon she will change into a demon and there’s nothing she can do about it.

Claimed and marked, she now belongs to a creature of the night. There’s just one upside to this – he’s trapped behind the walls of a mental institution. That means she has time to figure out a way to stop the change… well, she would’ve had time, if her mate hadn’t broken out of his cell.

He’s tired of being alone.

Draken Barrand is determined to claim his mate. There’s just one problem – he’s unlawfully trapped behind the walls of a mental institution. The only way he can reach her is through her dreams, where he claims her and marks her as his own. But his mate’s life is threatened when the Leader of his Legion finds out about his unlawful mating.

Will Draken be able to break free of his cell in time to save his woman? If he does, will she finally accept him as the man of her dreams and her reality?

Excerpt:

“Brandi Connelly, I fear you have stolen my heart right from my chest.” He was so close to her she could feel his breath on her lips. “From this day forward I will never be the same.”

Neither would she. With her eyes still closed Brandi felt a lone tear escape from her eyes and travel down her cheek.

Draken wiped it away. “I am yours forever,” he whispered and he sounded so sincere.

Opening her eyes she stared up at him while he caressed her cheek and stared down at her with an expression of amazement on his face.

“Wish I’d found you sooner,” he told her. “Before I became the broken being I am today.”

Guest Post – The Opposite of Right

Bad Decisions trilogy, Christi Barth, The Opposite of Right

I always love having Christi Barth stop by but for some reason this time I’m even more excited … I think it’s gotta be the subject matter 🙂  So check out her post below and let us know what you think.  Do you agree?  And if so, let us know who you think is super sexy!

*****

Why Are Rock Stars Hot?

I decided to write my Bad Decisions trilogy about a rock band because 1) readers love them, 2) it meant fun, over-the-top sex and plots, and 3) rock stars are hot.

Hang on.

Are they? Are they really?

At brunch yesterday, I posed this question to three (female) friends. Because let’s face it, when you think of rock stars, you don’t think of tans and bulging muscles like firefighters or athletes. One of my friends—who doesn’t even like country music—would crawl over her husband for the chance to jump on Blake Shelton….and so she reminds us every single week when she watches The Voice with drool running down her chin. We all turned our noses up at Axl Rose (too skinny and grungy) but couldn’t deny that in his heyday, we all knew dozens of women who lusted after him.

And then, after tossing out a few more names, the conversation turned to Justin Timberlake. I will say upfront that I love his music. All the way back to NSync right up to his latest release. I think he’s a tremendous entertainer, and sexy. Except….when they said his name, I thought about it and said – he’s got kind of a baby face. So why do I think he’s so sexy (aside from the super hot body, of course)?

Which brings me to the answer of why are rock stars hot? It is charisma. If you strip away their ability to pour $400 bottles of champagne all over your naked body, and the wish that they might limo you to a private plane to have their way with you on a private island (which can’t be discounted as a perk!) then you are left with charisma.

Rock stars can hold a crowd of fifty thousand screaming people in the palm of their hand. They strip down—both emotionally and sometimes literally—and pour their passion into their performances. Unleashing that amount and depth of raw passion impacts an audience. It is incredibly powerful.

That charisma and magnetism makes people lifelong fans. And it is the perfect ingredient for a romance novel. Now, I took a little authorial leeway and made Cam, the rocker hero in The Opposite of Right, pretty muscled and gorgeous. But I promise he’s got charisma, too, and that you’ll enjoy him. So tell me—which rock star do you think is drop dead dreamy?

Book 1 in the Bad Decisions trilogy

by Christi Barth

Blurb:

Kylie Stafford has spent her whole life doing exactly what’s expected. The right major, the right sorority, the right guys, just like her mother and her sister before her. But when everything falls apart for her, Kylie wonders if doing everything right has been utterly wrong. There’s only one way to find out.

She decides to try making all the wrong choices for three months. Hit on a tattoo-covered rock musician? Check. Go back to his dressing room for a hot hook-up against the wall? Gulp. Drop everything to be a roadie for him to binge on more of the best sex of her life? Maybe. Start falling for him despite her better judgment? Um….yeah. Figure out why doing everything that seems wrong feels so darn right?

Pre-order at: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | iBooks | Kobo

*****

Excerpt:

Kylie tugged at the hem of her first ever Riptide concert shirt. It was faded. Too big, since she’d bought it to wear at the gym. So she quickly knotted it high over one hip. It exposed her midriff and pulled the material tight against her breasts. Perfect—in all the wrong ways. She could do this. She had to do this. So what if she’d never hit on a man before? This was the Metro, for crying out loud, one of Chicago’s most famous rock clubs. People probably hooked up by the bathrooms twenty times a night. If everyone else could do it, so could Kylie.

She looked back over her shoulder at Amanda, who grinned like a fool and gave her two thumbs up. Okay, then. Waiting wouldn’t make her any braver. So she marched right up to the hot man. Couldn’t even see his face because of the exposed single lightbulb hanging two inches above his head. Kylie focused on the late day scruff along his jawline instead.

“Hi. I think you’re hot. I’ve had a really lousy day, and I think kissing you will make it better.”

Silence—or what passed for silence in a crowded club at almost ten pm—hung between them just long enough for Kylie to decide she’d made a horrible mistake. She was only wearing jeans, not anything sexy. This guy was waiting for a bathroom to open up. Maybe he needed to pee more than he needed to be sexually accosted by a stranger. She tried to squint past the bright halo obscuring his face to figure out if he was smiling or shocked or just dismissive.

“Let’s find out,” he finally said in a good-natured tone.

Wow. That was easy. Except….asking him was only step one of her first bad decision. Implementing step two was something else entirely. Kylie had no idea how to start. Should she wait until after the bathroom? Go straight for the lips, or kick things off with an introductory neck nibble? And where to put her hands?

The man snaked out an arm around her waist, pulling her close enough that the buttons on their jeans clinked. Kylie stumbled, which ended up putting one of his legs between hers. Both hands flew up to rest on those taut pecs. “Hi,” he breathed softly against her ear.

Oh. That was nice of him. The polite ‘hi’ was all it took to spur her into action. Kylie pushed onto her tiptoes, turned her head sideways and aimed for his lips. She almost missed. Got the corner and some sharp stubble.

But this guy knew his stuff. He caught her lower lip with his upper, tugged her into place. And then he nibbled. Just soft, short nibbles. Ones that made all the hair on her arms stand up. His tongue traced the crease between her lips. Kylie parted them on a sigh, but he didn’t push the advantage. Instead, he just kept up the teasing, back and forth motion.

Heat seared into her lower back. Without her realizing it, he’d shifted his hand to the exposed skin between her jeans and tied-up tee. Big. Warm. Moving in a slow whoosh, like a brush across a snare drum. It made Kylie want to wriggle closer. So still on tiptoe, she wrapped her leg around his. That motion brought her flush against something very, very hard. Wow.

His other hand grasped the side of her face. Tilted it back a bit. Then his tongue finally swooped in, caressing—seriously!—all of her tongue as carefully and thoroughly as Kylie imagined he might treat her breast. God, she wanted to rip her shirt off and let him do just that.

Tipping his forehead against hers, he asked, “Is your day any better now?”

“Who cares about my day? My night is freaking fantastic.”

If you like sci-fi romances, I think I have the book for you.  But be warned it is short and, based on the reviews, hot …!

Space Wolf Chronicles series

 by Kara Lockharte

Blurb:

As one of New Tokyo’s top entrepreneurs, everyone knows the name Lauryn Daring. I’ve got almost everything I want: money, power, respect. The only thing I’m missing is someone
to share it with. It’s definitely not going to be skinny white boy Xavier Stone. He was my best friend growing up and though he may have had a crush on me when we were young, I thought that I would never be physically satisfied by
a man I’d be afraid of squashing in bed.

I haven’t seen nor heard from him since he shipped out on a military transport and stationed to a planet of werewolves more than a decade ago. Now he’s coming home and the least I can do for an old friend is offer him a place to stay. He says he’s not the boy I grew up with, but I know I can trust him. If Xavier insists he still has feelings for me, I’ll be able to handle it better this time.

Or will I?

Excerpt:

Why was it that some men, particularly white men from First Earth, always believed that black women must be in need of dick? Not just any dick per se, but theirs, of course. Take Sir Jameson Charles, a recent immigrant from First Earth. In his own mind, because he came from humanity’s birthplace, he was clearly a superior specimen.

In a place where they used to burn fossil fuels perhaps.

It didn’t matter to Sir Charles that I was a trillionaire who ran LD Holdings, one of the most prominent real estate management companies in New Tokyo, and one of the very companies he was trying to entice to partner with him in an offworld investment
in an asteroid resort. It didn’t matter that he was fat, balding and had a mustache that looked like it had been glued on.

Nope. All that mattered to him was that I was 1) female and 2) black, not necessarily in that order. He kept talking to my cleavage and trying to touch my hair. If we hadn’t
been at my friend’s charity event for disabled kids with children actually there, I would have run him over with a floating wheelchair. While he was distracted, I managed to dodge the fancy human servers, say my farewells to the hostess and leave the party.

I waited outside on the balcony for my aircar to arrive. I was checking my messages when I heard him behind me.

“The famous Lauryn Daring. Are you sure you don’t want to take me up on that drink?”

I quickly typed something into my phone and turned slowly with an exasperated sigh.

Sir Charles held up a bottle of scotch. It was the good stuff, the kind that came from First Earth. Huge eyebrows jumped up and down. He must have believed that to be sexy I guess, but it was actually kind of creepy.

I stepped away from him. “I’m sure.”

He ignored my clear dismissal. “Look, I’ll be honest, I’m just trying to give you a chance. I’m sure women like you don’t often get an opportunity to have some fun.”

Was he saying what I think he was saying? I lowered my screen, took off my glasses and gave him my deadliest stare.  “What do you mean women like me?”

“I actually kind of find larger black women somewhat of attractive.”

Not this crap. I moved to go back inside to find someone I knew who could help me keep away from this jerk before I strangled him.

A KINDLED WINTER - coverA Kindled Winter

Author: Rachel L. Demeter

Release Date: November 1, 2015

Publisher: Black Lyon Publishing, LLC

Genre: Contemporary Holiday Romance

Blurb:

“Christmas, my child, is love in action. Every time we love, every time we give, it’s Christmas.” — Dale Evans

A week before Christmas, Jeseca Reed sets off for Blue River, Oregon—her childhood home and a vault of tender memories. However, fate takes an unexpected turn when she’s left stranded in the mountains’ vast, untamed wilderness. Desperate and alone, she seeks shelter at a cottage and finds herself in the arms of a mysterious stranger.

Dr. David Drake was once a renowned cardiovascular surgeon. But a devastating tragedy has left him scarred both inside and out, unable to use his hands to operate again. For the past five years, his Blue River cottage has been his sole escape—a safe haven where he can shut out the world, bury himself in his grief, and reunite with his son’s memory.

Together they are summer and winter. Fire and ice. And yet a poignant connection forms between them. Jeseca awakens David and thaws his heart with a romance hot enough to melt snow. But before David and Jeseca can fully embrace each other, they must wade through darkness and confront the ghosts of their pasts …

Equal parts steamy and heartfelt, A Kindled Winter brings the spirit of the holidays to life with a passionate story of second chances and healing love.

Excerpt:

David’s enchanting voice swelled the darkness, surrounding Jeseca, gripping onto her senses with a thousand beckoning fingers. They held her captive—and she readily surrendered her freedom.

“We’re like day and night. Summer and winter. Fire and ice. And yet something about you whispers my name and echoes inside me …” His mouth found her pulse point. Damp, hot lips nibbled on her skin and sent her wits reeling. “You should have never come in here. It was a mistake.”

“Then tell me to leave and I’ll go,” she replied through a breathy whisper. Her voice sounded thick with desire, hoarse … she hardly recognized it as her own. “And I don’t believe we’re complete opposites,” she said, her words husky and guttural. “I think the real you is hiding.”

Impenetrable silence took hold. Only the howling wind and David’s heavy breathing breached the quiet.

“Should I leave?”

More silence. “No. I need you … I need you to stay with me.” The words emerged from the darkness and wrapped around Jeseca’s heart with the force of a lasso.

He plunged a hand beneath the bathrobe, which had fallen halfway open, and a jarring whoosh of air slammed against her skin. His tongue swirled along her collarbone, branding her flesh with slick, wet shapes. Her heart hammered, and she clutched at the bedsheet as his mouth ventured lower … lower … skirting across the V-line of her plush pajama top. Then his fingers were working the buttons, quickly undoing them and sweeping the soft material aside. Cold air tightened her naked breasts, causing gooseflesh to prickle her skin.

“Stop me if I’m going too fast,” he breathed against her.

Yes, she should stop him. This was wrong. Totally wrong. Instead, all rational thought melted away and she found herself arching against his mouth and tongue. She wanted more—not less. And she wanted him to go faster—not slower …

Review:

I think that this one will require a certain kind of reader to truly appreciate it – don’t get me wrong, the story is good and the characters & their troubles are interesting, but the writing style is detailed and kinda flowery.  It reminded me of old school romances like Pride & Prejudice, with a lot of attention given to the description (there’s a glimpse of what I mean in the excerpt above).  You definitely feel like you are there, which I enjoyed, but I know that some prefer a more concise story so it may not appeal to all.

That said, I found these two and their pasts fascinating.  Both of them had tragedy change the way they view the world, but in different ways.  I really enjoyed how Jeseca worked to bring David out of his exile.  I get the idea that she’s younger than him, although I’m not sure if that is ever specified, which I think helps some as well.  She has so much energy about her that you can’t help be caught up in it, and neither can he.

David comes across as a bit of an old soul anyway – a calm and methodical man, perfect for a surgeon.  And a loving father & husband.  Unfortunately the horrible loss of both his family and his career made him even older spiritually.  Spending time with Jeseca, though, starts bringing him back to his old self.

I did have a couple of things in the plot that I probably would have done a little differently – I’m not a writer so 🙂 – but they didn’t interfere with how much I enjoyed being there with these two as they fall in love and come to terms with their pasts.  Again, the feel of the book isn’t going to be for everyone.  (It’s gotten a ton of great reviews on Goodreads, mostly 4s and 5s, but there is that single 1 star review and it is for the style.)  If you read the excerpt and think a whole book like that isn’t your thing, no biggie.  But if it is then I think you’ll enjoy David and Jeseca’s journey to their HEA.

Excerpt:

Did he love her?

In the heat of the night, love was a given. But as daylight unfolded, her insecurities found their path to her heart. Mina didn’t move, afraid the slightest shifting might wake him. His chest rose and fell against her back as he breathed peacefully. Their bodies touched, connected in a perfect fit. A match made in heaven she repeated to herself, in heaven but not on earth?

The longing she felt for him transcended sex and lust. Eyes closed, she revisited their good-bye two years ago in the cemetery in Italy, and that sense of unconditional love he’d brought into her life. It was the kind of love Mina assumed girls customarily expected from a father, a brother, a kin. But that was only a guess, a yearning, since she’d grown up without parents or siblings, so she had never experienced such love, until then, during that magical Italian summer.

Diego stirred and brushed his lips up and down the nap of her neck. “Missed you,” he whispered.

Now wide-awake, Mina quipped, “You missed me? How?”

“How?” In one fluid motion he spun her around, her body pressed against his. “How did I miss you?’ He paused, his eyes burning from a surge of passion she hadn’t seen coming. “For the last two years I carried with me the image of you in your red dress. The way you looked the last time I was near you. It’s branded in my soul. I couldn’t rid myself of it. Even now a glimpse of a red dress would arouse me. I’d be aroused not by the woman wearing it, but by the memory of you in that red dress.”

Caldwell Brothers #1

by Chelsea Camaron & M.J. Fields

Loveswept

Blurb:

Perfect for fans of J. S. Scott and Emma Chase, Hendrix introduces the wild and sexy Caldwell boys—three brothers who are living up to their legendary names in Detroit Rock City.

Hendrix Caldwell wants nothing more than to revitalize the family bar—and tear down every last reminder of his no-good father. But business isn’t the only thing on his mind. An explosive encounter with a stranger at a charity masquerade is just the distraction he craves, with no names and no strings attached. For Hendrix, sex is casual, and love is a four-letter word. His commitment is to his brothers, his bar, and his bike. So why can’t he stop thinking about the naughty Cinderella who rocked his world, then left him—and her panties—behind?

Olivia Hemmingway knows fairytales are for little girls. Drowning in debt and hiding a shameful secret, she won’t be saved by a knight in tattooed armor, no matter how mind-blowing their one-night stand may have been. Olivia never expects to meet her masked lover again. But when she takes a job at Hendrix Caldwell’s bar, her sexy new boss seems all too familiar. And once the lights go out and the music is turned up, the sparks between them burn hotter than ever.

Excerpt:

When you think of Motor City, you think of poverty, but what Detroit lacks in class and elegance, we make up for in dive bars. You got the 2-Way Inn on Mt. Elliott, Nancy Whiskey on Harrison, Old Miami on Cass, Greenwich Time in Cadillac Square, Kwicky on 8 Mile, Marshall’s on Jefferson, Jumbo’s on 3rd, the Painted Lady up in Hamtramck, My Dad’s Place on Kercheval, and Caldwell’s on Atwater.

You know the kind of places I’m talking about—windowless joints on the corner with the High Life sign blinking because you know the sign is as old as the paint-chipped building it hangs off. The blinking sign beckons you. You have to go inside to see what the hell is going on ’cause you can’t see in the windows, and it sounds like you may be missing something if you don’t.

They are boarded up tight, because they got busted out two nights ago when the place got robbed by the fucking thugs who walk up and down the streets, selling candy one minute and panhandling two hours later. The pieces of shit are inventive—I’ll give them that—but my suggestion is get a fucking job, slob.

Back in the day, when the auto factories dominated the area, things didn’t look so broken down. It was alive and kicking. The area was still peppered with bars. Bar owners were making mad cash, too.

At the end of every street, there was a joint that served ice-cold High Life on tap and two-dollar shots. There was entertainment and fun to be had everywhere. You could always get a decent, quick meal on your lunch break, a live show at night; and the bartenders made you feel like you belonged, like you were family.

My pops won the title to Hooligans at a dogfight. With it being a great location in the Rivertown district near Chene Park, he truly got a prize that time. He was instantly banking money and banging women. That’s when he met Mom.

She sang, played guitar, and had a decent following as a one-woman show. He was thirty, and she was twenty-two. She sang at his bar every Wednesday night and eventually tended bar three nights a week. Like many of his barmaids, she fell for his bullshit, and that ended up with her pregnant with me in less than two months from the time they met.

He moved her into his apartment above the bar and embraced becoming a father. He wanted to do it better than his old man had. Isn’t that the truth in life, just do it better? Don’t we all strive for that?

Eventually, the novelty wore off. He started fucking around on her. When she confronted him, he beat her down emotionally. She busted her ass keeping the bar clean, and he busted his ass drinking the profit. Two more boys later, and she was busting her ass to raise their three kids on top of keeping his business afloat.

When the economy in Detroit deteriorated, he lost what was left of his mind. He started coming after us for stupid shit like spilled milk, a LEGO on the floor, you name it. Hell, the wind blowing in the wrong direction had him on us.

Mom started stepping in with, “Boys, go to your room.”

Sure, we did as we were told, but we heard the shit. We heard him hitting her. It was no better than seeing it, either. We were helpless as the sounds of each blow became increasingly deafening to our tiny ears. Funny how, in the moment, adrenaline kicks in and instincts go into overdrive. Every noise becomes louder, clearer, and sticks with you longer. I can still hear that shit in my sleep.

As I grew older and stood taller than him, I began to step in. He and I would go at it, fist to fist, until one of us wasn’t moving. At first, it was me. Then, when I was seventeen, it was finally him. Fucker knew it, too.

I begged Mom to move out, but she refused to leave her home and family. She made excuses for him, said that was how he was raised.

He stopped coming at us when I busted his nose. I hated the bastard, and when Morrison was big enough, I moved the fuck out. Still saw Mom every day, though. I couldn’t go a day without seeing her or my brothers. I needed to make sure they were okay, but I also knew, if I stayed, I would kill him and be in the state pen within a year.

He lost Hooligans because the fucking asshole bet against the wrong underground fighter. Who was the fighter he bet against? My brother, his own son. Who did he lose it to? Me. Fucker didn’t even know it was me until a week later, either.

I let him stay in the apartment above the bar, not for him, but for Mom.

I had been working for a contractor, fixing up old warehouses and making them into apartments for years. Even made enough to buy my own place.

I fixed up the second and third floors, making them livable. Wide-open space, two bedrooms, two baths on the second floor, the third is my loft. The first floor is a badass garage. It is where I spend the rest of my money—on my tools, my toys, and my rides.

I roll over to find my pit bull, Floyd, is hogging the bed as usual. She—yes, Floyd is a she—is an obvious bed hog.

When I found her, she had on a pink, spiked collar that was digging into her neck. I squatted down and peeled it off the poor girl, and she let me. Then, she took off, and I followed her to an abandoned warehouse, walking into a fucking scene that makes my stomach churn to this day. Fucking dogfights.

My dad loves those godforsaken fights, while I despise them.

I called a cop friend I knew from high school while in an outside alley and then waited. When the fuckers running the circuit were taken in, along with the spectators, I watched the SPCA take the dogs. Floyd looked at me, I looked at her, and I knew she was mine.

“Floyd, seriously, bitch”—I laugh as she licks my face—“get down.”

*****

Review:

I have to say that at first I was a little turned off by Hendrix and his brothers.  I have nothing against a bad boy but sometimes I feel like that can skirt a line with thug.  Some of the things that he said and thought just wasn’t all that attractive to me (but I know that this … roughness (?) is a popular thing now, especially seen with the uptick in MC stories).  Luckily these guys have so many more good qualities that anything else was quickly forgotten.  And there was so much here that I liked – the way the leads got together and gave in to their feelings, how the brothers were there for each other and how Olivia became part of that once she got involved with Hendrix, the sweet but not too sweet ending, and there’s even more.

Neither Hendrix nor Olivia had it easy and they were definitely letting those past incidents impact their present, keeping them out of relationships.  I love that Olivia didn’t let her’s keep her sassy side down though.  She’s a hoot, with a lot of sass.  Hendrix could get a little too dour, internalizing his pain, but not when faced with her pluck.  Once they gave up fighting their attraction they were a riot together.  But they were also good about giving the support that each other needed.  They managed to take their screwed up situations, and less than stellar first meeting, and turned it into something healthy that worked for them.

There were some great hints at what’s to come with the other brothers’ stories and I’m hoping that we can explore their complex family dynamic more.  These guys had a tough time of it, which manifested itself in some troubling ways, but I’m sure that they’ll get the kick in the pants they need to get everything straightened out.  I’m really looking forward to Morrison’s book at the end of the year (although I think that Jagger’s might be the biggie of the batch).

A Delta House Novel, Gretchen S. B., The Doll Making Delta

Doll Making 101

Reneé Edward has a lot on her plate. She took over as President of the Reneé-Gal company from her father a few months
ago. Just in time for a merger with a new parent company. As if that timing was not bad enough she finds out several Junior Executives have been ruining the
merger from within.

Just as she is scrambling to pick up the pieces, Ruben Blackthorne strolls into her life. He is sexy, tall and clearly into her. Though she is excited about this new development in her love life Reneé finds it a little hard to juggle the new addition. As everything in her life finally seems to fall into place for the first time in almost a year Reneé finds herself confused as Ruben begins to pull away. Had she imagined their connection? Were things moving too fast? Lost and confused, at least she has her family and her fellow Deltas to get her through.

That is until everything takes another unexpected turn.

Get into the Delta
Excerpt
“Okay, sip and spill. What kept you away for
the better part of a week?” Naomi asked before tipping her cup to her
mouth.
Sighing Reneé unwrapped her sandwich. “You
remember how Uncle James and I couldn’t figure out why there were all these
hang ups with the negotiations right?”
Naomi’s eyes grew cautious and narrowed as she
nodded over her mug.
“Well as it turns out three of our junior board
members were sending emails sabotaging the merger. They claimed I was holding
on to information to sweeten the deal for our side. They also said that they
could, with help, oust me and make a more agreeable deal.”
Naomi’s eyes widened as she set down her mug.
“Wait, what? Isn’t that illegal or something? Are you going to sue them?
Can you save the deal? How did you find out?”
The shocked disbelieve from her friend made Reneé
feel better. It made her feel like she wasn’t losing her mind to have someone
as upset as she was. Uncle James had seemed more downtrodden than upset.
“One of their assistants got wind of what was
going on and clued in Debbie. You know how she gets about finding information.
She found the email correspondence between these guys and our soon to be parent
company. When Debbie showed the emails to Uncle James and I we fired them. As
for suing, I don’t know. Our lawyers are handling it.
We think the deal may be salvageable but they are
sending in one of their acquisitions and negotiations guys to do the rest in
person. That way there can be no mistakes. Uncle James is all for this. He says
the guy they are sending is the same one that approached him and Dad years ago.
That he is a trustworthy guy. I still don’t know. While I appreciate that they
still want to negotiate it almost feels like I am being chastised for not
having a better handle on the board.” Some of the stress crept back in as
Reneé finished.
Smiling sympathetically, Naomi reached across the
counter to squeeze her hand. “I’m sorry you have to deal with all this.
But it is going to get easier right? I mean once this thing goes though your
load will be lighter. There are maybe six months left, yes a hard six months
but there is light at the end of the tunnel.” She gave another squeeze
before letting go and grabbing her cup again. “Now eat your
sandwich!”
Rolling her eyes Reneé complied, knowing full well
Naomi wouldn’t let her talk again until at least half the sandwich was gone.
They sat in a companionable silence for several minutes
when the bell above the door rang several times. When one particular time Reneé
saw Naomi’s face light up she turned to see who entered. Then it was like she
stopped breathing.
He was tall, maybe six-three and gorgeous. He had
shaggy light brown hair, a sharp nose and jaw. As well as the palest blue eyes
Reneé had ever seen. The mystery guy had one of those lithe builds that suited
the jeans and t-shirt he wore as well as the guitar case strapped to his back.
Reneé made herself start breathing again as he came
to stand next to her, beaming at Naomi.

🔥EXCLUSIVE EARLY RELEASE 🔥 Around and Around We Go is "fun and funny, with a good dose of heart and a bit of heat". Full review at romanticread.com "They have issues & emotions that are real, delivering the spice & the feels in equal measure." Full review at romanticread.com "There’s so much that appealed to me – small town vibes, yes please. Brother’s best friend, oh yeah. Pining for each other for over a decade, the slowest of slow burns." Full review at romanticread.com "Hayes has a certain feel to her stories and I love the way they are all about the slow burn, with tons of feel good moments and steam." Full review at romanticread.com Saddle up for your next binge read! The Feud by @sawyerbennett123 is on sale right now for just 99 cents on all retailers. "Little bit angsty, little bit sassy, and a whole lot steamy, Stevens really brought it for me with Denis’s story." Full review at romanticread.com "This is my first Chelle Sloan book and for sure I did not know what I was missing." Full review at romanticread.com "Ryder is pretty low angst, with a few moments of trouble getting the two to their happy ending, but it definitely doesn’t scrimp on the heat."
