Excerpt:

She stepped into the floor length dress, the silk chiffon a cool glide over her skin, the dress and underwear strategically designed. No one would see her scars. No one other than her husband and doctors knew.

Double mastectomy.

Reconstruction.

Prophylactic – preventative. In hopes of evading the disease that had claimed her mother, her aunt and her grandmother.

Fiona had never had breast cancer. But with her genetics, she couldn’t afford to take the risk. She pressed the dress to her chest and tried not to think of the doctor’s words today about a suspicious spot on her mammogram that could be nothing. But just to be safe…

The creaking of the opening door startled her. Her dress slid down and she grabbed it by the embellished straps, pressing it back to her chest even though she knew only one person would walk in unannounced.

Her husband.

The world’s sexiest athlete two years running.

And the man she hadn’t slept with since her surgery six months ago.

Henri’s hands fell to rest on her shoulders, his breath caressing her neck. “Need help with the zipper?”

We’ve seen Sieders before with Lorelei’s Lyric and I’m so excited to get a chance to see book 2!

*****

The Adventure Continues in Southern Elemental Guardians Series Book 2

After her sister Lorelei finds a happily ever after, mermaid princess Ilsa is next in line to rule the Rhine kingdom. But she’s having way too much fun playing with mortals in the New World to let a crown cramp her style. Responsibility isn’t her thing, so she’ll need to find the will and courage to embrace her duties as an elemental guardian before she can transform into a worthy ruler. Enter Paul Pulaski, mortal scientist, adventurer, and hot geek. Paul’s all about responsibility, but he’s got a chip on his shoulder and a lot to prove in his pursuit of professional prestige—he doesn’t have time for fun. Until he meets Ilsa. Worlds collide and sparks fly when these two unlikely allies team up. Their mission:  battle a dark and mysterious river force that threatens both mortal and elemental alike while evading monster hunters, rival scientists, and jealous elementals.

Start with the classic cheerleader meets nerd trope, add a dash of magic and a sultry Southern setting, then presto—an unconventional fantasy romance that will hopefully bring a readers a lovely escape from the ordinary.

Blurb:

No one believes Ilsa is worthy of ruling the Rhine River Kingdom, including Ilsa.

Sure, she wields plenty of mermaid magic and has a winning personality, but responsibility? Not her thing.

So instead of embracing her role as river royalty, Ilsa opts to extend her holiday in the New World. Frolicking with mortals is her M.O.—until she answers a distress call from an endangered species in the waters near Chattanooga. After her close encounter with a motorboat threatens to expose the world of elemental guardians, Ilsa partners with biologist and unlikely ally, Paul Pulaski, to cover her tail.

Worlds collide and sparks ignite between Princess Ilsa and her diamond-in-the-rough mortal, Paul. But can they survive monster hunters, a rival scientist with a grudge, and a dark force that could destroy mortal and elemental alike?

Excerpt:

Returning her focus to the screen, Ilsa caught the blurry image of a boat coming toward the camera in spite of the desperate cries of warning she’d heard from its operator. She sat down in the desk chair and scooted close to get a better view. Horrified but unable to look away, she heard a sickening crack that must have come from her skull hitting the hull of the boat, followed by more shouts. At least two men were yelling. One denied culpability while the other seemed focused on…rescuing someone.

Her.

One of the two men rescued her?

Well, perhaps it had started as a rescue mission, but once the men spotted her fins it had no doubt turned into an entirely different scenario. After all, mortals were greedy, selfish beings who couldn’t be trusted. Oh the males had their uses, ones she’d particularly enjoyed during the course of her long life, but it didn’t change their nature. Ilsa’s human father had betrayed her mother because of her nixie nature, so what else could be expected of mortal men?

And yet, the jumbled audio feed suggested her rescuer’s outrage at the boat driver, especially as he fled the scene. The remaining man had apparently pulled her from the water and transported her here, wherever “here” might be. Confused and still a bit achy, she struggled to reconcile the evidence in front of her with history and experience.

“Are you okay?”

She yelped when the deep, familiar male voice came from behind her.

Ilsa jumped up from the computer chair, nearly knocking it over. She whirled around and held her arms out in front of her. Channeling her remaining power, she prepared to hit him with a blast of nixie energy that would make an electric eel jolt seem like a tickle. And if that didn’t work, she’d put him into a stupor with her Siren call.

Instead of attacking or running away, however, he simply stood and stared at her.

She’d been right in calling him a giant. The man stood at least six-three. With disheveled auburn hair and an even more outrageous goatee flanked by shorter stubble, he reminded Ilsa of the homeless vagabonds she’d encountered throughout her tour of the Americas. His worn T-shirt and ragged jeans solidified the look, though his sharp gaze and firm stance made Ilsa think twice about dismissing him as a fool.

The man slowly raised his hands, palms facing her. Though he regarded her with apparent caution, his actions didn’t seem threatening. Instead, he looked concerned.

“I don’t know if you can understand me, but I want you to know that I won’t hurt you. You were injured and I brought you here to help you…”

He stopped speaking when he looked down the length of her body. Her naked body. Well, what with one thing and another she hadn’t had time to conjure clothing to cover her—

Oh dear. Now there was another complication she didn’t need.

“My God,” he whispered, eyes wide with shock and apparent disbelief. “What happened to your fins?”

*****

Review:

For some reason I can’t pinpoint I wasn’t all that intrigued by the blurb but I got a copy because I enjoyed Lorelei’s Lyric so much and I was curious where Sieders would go from there.  I’m glad I did because I really liked this story!

Ilsa has been the typical party girl spare to the heir but now she has to decide if she’s ready to take over for her sister.  She’s got quite a few insecurities to deal with and she’s concerned that others see her as inadequate as she fears she is. She’s kinda at a loss until she runs into Paul.

I love the idea of a sexy, nerdy scientist 🙂  The way that Paul wants to know about everything and doesn’t get freaked out by the weirdness that he sees makes him a refreshing and interesting hero.  Unfortunately his country upbringing, mixed with his cerebral tendencies, means that he’s got some hang-ups of his own.

Paul’s unique outlook on life and dedication to keeping the earth’s waters healthy make him a good mate for Ilsa.  He’s so intrigued by everything she shows him … and her obvious appreciation & attraction towards him.  While his belief that she can be the leader that her people needs has her believing it as well.  It’s super sweet to see both of them grow in confidence thanks to the other.

Sieders had a lot of fun with the hot cheerleader and the nerd storyline, while the paranormal portion of the story makes it different.  I liked how it felt familiar but was funky at the same time.  There’s a little bit of danger and some fun secondary characters to help round out the story – it keeps things exciting and gives hints to possible future stories.  Add it all together & it means I’m super excited to see what comes next!

Excerpt:

He smiled. “Just say thank you, and we’ll call it even.”

For a long moment, she stared at him, mouth agape, not sure if this was some sort of British humor she didn’t understand. Well, she supposed it didn’t cost her anything to give him what he wanted. “Thank you.”

His smile widened. “I thought American girls were all about, uhm,” he paused, his gaze sliding to her slightly parted lips, “…affectionate forms of appreciation.”

Abby exhaled. Did he really expect her to kiss him? Well, she wasn’t going to, no matter how many times her gaze wandered to his mouth. “I don’t know you, and you certainly don’t know me, Mr. —”

“Lord,” he corrected her with the slightest conceited bow. “Lord Rushwood.”

She resisted the urge to roll her eyes. “Pardon me. Lord Rushwood.”

“You may still call me Edmund.”

This time she brought her hands to her face, ready to let out a frustrated scream. He didn’t move as she parted her fingers and peeked through them. Growing more annoyed, she dropped her hands to her sides and squared her shoulders.

“I have thanked you…Edmund, so I will not be wrapping my arms around your neck and inviting you up for a night of, whatever you call it in England—”

“Rogering? Shagging?”

She closed her eyes and brought in a therapeutic breath. “Never mind,” she replied, trying to extinguish the blush spreading like a wildfire into her face.

I was born in historical Appomattox, Virginia. After graduating from high school, I joined the military and served five years in the active duty Army. After leaving, I decided to go into the Ohio Air National Guard where I retired as a Master Sergeant in 2011. In case you were wondering, I have never flown a plane. After getting lost to the recruiter’s office, I was highly discouraged from navigating one.

I admit, I am an avid Jane Austen fan and try to incorporate her in my books, in one way or another. This dream of writing, with Jane sometimes, is an exciting adventure that may take me as far as the stars or as close as my computer.

When I’m not writing, I’m spending time with my husband and two boys, ages 12 and 10. Without their sacrifice and understanding, I would have never been able to pursue my passion of writing or my accomplishment of becoming a published author.

No matter what I write and read, there ALWAYS has to be a happy ending.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Blurb:

Fern Taylor has sworn off men for good. After her boyfriend abandons her and their infant daughter, she knows that no one can be trusted with her heart or her family. She has kept busy raising her precocious little girl and selling her handmade wares at the natural foods grocery store she runs with her tight-knit family. As far as Fern is concerned, her life is so full there’s no room for a man in it.

That is, until she meets Adam Price. At the recommendation of his colleagues at the local community college, he stops by the Taylor Family Store for lunch one afternoon. And while he enjoyed their homemade cuisine, it is the store’s cute and cranky owner that keeps him coming back day after day.

Despite herself, Fern can’t resist her growing attraction to the handsome professor, especially when she sees how good he is with her daughter. Once she decides to give Adam an honest chance, Fern comes dangerously close to falling for him. But when she uncovers a link between their pasts, Fern is faced with an impossible decision: protect the life she built for her and her daughter, or take a chance on the one guy in six years who has swept her off her feet.

Excerpt:

“So how’s the kidney bean and quinoa salad?”

I froze at the sound of Adam’s deep, sexy voice, my hand mid-swipe as I cleaned the counter. Keeping my chin dipped down, I glanced up at him through my eyelashes and hoped the look I gave him was enough to convey my annoyance at his presence. After the ambush from Mom and Fawn the night before, the last thing I needed was for one of them to see that Adam had come back again. “It’s good. Would you like me to get you a container so you can be on your way?”

Adam pressed his hand over his heart, feigning offense. “But Fern, I only just got here. You can’t want me to leave yet.”

I gave the rag I was holding a quick squeeze before tossing it to the side. I hated that he was right. There was a small part of me that wanted Adam to stay for a little bit longer, just so I could ogle him. The sleeves of his blue and white plaid shirt were rolled up to his elbows, exposing his exquisitely sculpted forearms. And it didn’t hurt that the blue in his shirt really made his eyes pop. I couldn’t imagine how the poor girls in his classes held it together in front of him. “How much quinoa salad do you want?”

“A quarter of a pound.” His mouth quirked up at one corner. He was clearly amused by the effect he had on me.

I grabbed a plastic container from the stack. “No problem.”

“No problem, huh? Fern, did you know that was the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me?” he asked, leaning his well-defined forearm on the display case.

His sudden closeness caused every nerve in my body to go on high alert. Distracted by the way his muscles flexed right in my line of sight, I dropped a giant spoonful of quinoa down the side of the container. “Of course,” I muttered under my breath.

Adam leaned in even closer. “I’m sorry. I’m not distracting you, am I?” From his cocked eyebrow and the smirk on his face, I could tell he already knew the answer to his question.

My cheeks flushed, and I wished I could run back into the kitchen and hide. I hated that there was a member of the opposite sex who had the power to get me so flustered. Hurriedly, I scooped a couple spoonfuls of quinoa into the container before crushing the lid on. “I’m fine.” I looked up and flashed Adam a bitchy, tightlipped smile, ready to slam down his container. My hand froze in mid-air when I saw one the candles I’d boxed up the night before sitting on the counter, and I could feel a look of bewilderment replace my scowl.

“This candle smells incredible.” Adam picked up the Mason jar, unscrewed the lid, and sniffed it. “I heard you make these.”

With a sigh, I rested my hand on my hip. “Let me guess. Fawn told you.” My sister was stocking shelves in the home and beauty aisle, which made her the obvious culprit.

He twisted the lid back on and nodded. “You have a lot of talents, Fern Taylor.”

Spare Me the Drama CoverSpare Me the Drama

A City Lights romance

by Karen Tomsovic

Blurb:

Love a good soap opera?

Then tune in to Spare Me the Drama

Humor and heart come together in this contemporary love story about second chances and family life..

When widowed father of eight Martin Leon remembers that he forgot to invite an important guest to a birthday party for one of the kids, who can blame him? Since his wife’s death, he’s struggled to juggle the demands of a large family with the equally demanding job as head writer of the daytime soap opera he and Jeanie once co-wrote together but which he must now pen alone in the face of a dwindling audience, an executive producer only too happy to alter the course of his stories at her slightest whim, and a nagging case of writer’s block.

Roxanne Hunter parlayed her sexy role on After the Loving into a lucrative, luxury-bedding business years ago and didn’t look back. Just when she was on the brink of having it all, the universe pulled the rug out from under her, leaving her to nurse a devastating double loss of her own.

Accepting Martin’s last-minute invitation, Roxanne decides it’s the perfect getaway to take her mind off her lonely life. All she wants is to fulfill a promise she once made to Martin’s sister and find out how he and his brood are coping with grief. Though Martin may wake up one of these days ready for a woman again, Roxanne has no intention of reliving the days of her youthful, secret crush on him.

But the females in Martin’s family have other plans. Startled by the revelation that she is as much a stray as anyone else Martin has taken into his household, Roxanne nevertheless allows herself to be enfolded into the embrace of family life and a romance with him.

Can she fulfill her promise to get through fate together, or will the universe – and the past – pull the rug out from under her one more time, just as she’s about to get the happy ending she always wanted but never dared dream she’d have?

Readers of funny, feel-good women’s fiction will want to grab this witty but tender, literate romance of a widowed single father and the sexy femme fatale who brings him back to life.

Fans of young adult characters also will enjoy the viewpoint of the hero’s teenage daughters on his new-found love…

spare me the drama 1

Excerpt:

Sailing back toward them for another push, Lana opened her mouth and screamed. “Higher!”

Roxanne heaved a bit harder. Obviously she was trying hard to please. In doing so, she loosened the scent of her perfume and sent a couple hundred flowers Martin’s way. He inhaled with a little too much pleasure.

“Now we’ve got Nilda in that room,” he said. “She talked me into getting that new phone everyone’s lining up for.”

“Guess Nilda doesn’t think cell phones cause cancer,” Roxanne said. A wicked smile crossed her lips. “Can you handle one of those?”

She remembered his technophobia. Martin smiled wider. “What do you think?”

“I think you can’t tell your hashtag from your—”

Lana screamed out again. “Higher!”

Roxanne eyed the listening five-year-old and left her remark unfinished. She and Martin traded glances and shared a mutual laugh.

“You know my aunt,” Martin said. “You can’t tell her anything. According to her—based on the always-to-be-trusted Internet—you’ve had two nose jobs, an eyebrow lift, breast augmentation, cheek implants…”

“Why, I used to be a man.”

“… and an earlobe tuck.”

“She was right about the nose job. But there was only the one.”

Lana sailed back again. “Higher!”

This time Roxanne replied with a tentative “Uh…okay?” because both she and Martin could see the swing beginning to veer toward the brink of control.

Martin stepped in and brought the swing to a stop. “No higher.”

Her fists in a helpless clench, Roxanne shrank back, teetering on one awkward heel of a cool shootie.  “Sorry.”

Martin patted Lana on the head. “We don’t need any trips to the emergency room today.”

“Daddy, please.”

“No.”

Roxanne made some obligatory listen-to-your-father type comment and then wound Lana down—figuratively—with a suggestion to see the new kitten.

Martin moved to lift his daughter out of the swing and as he did, his shoulder creaked, causing Roxanne to glance around for the source.

“Was that you?” she said. “Or the swing?”

With Lana safely on the ground, Martin rubbed his shoulder. “It’s just a little rheumatism. It comes and goes.”

“Ah, you’ve got arthritis.”

“I don’t have arthritis,” he insisted. “I have rheumatism.”

“It’s okay, Martin, we all get older. It happens. Even I have to wear reading glasses from time to time.”

“Even you?” Martin tsked. He couldn’t wait to hear Stephanie’s pronouncement about those.

Roxanne had always been a beauty, and as he watched her toddle across the lawn with his daughter, realized she still was. From the moment she’d stepped out of her splashy convertible, she and her dark hair and her air of red roses had captivated him. His family, also dazzled, could not stop talking about her or to her. His seven-year-old niece, who would rather die than be the center of attention, seemed relieved that someone else had taken over the spotlight at her own party and gratefully basked in the reflected light of the mysterious stranger drawing everyone around her like a magnet.

Whee.

He liked Roxanne, though, and not because of her great looks and charm. When his sister had become a widow, Roxanne had been there. And when Tess was diagnosed and struggling for life, Roxanne had been there. Roxanne was so much more than a party girl. She’d proved herself to be a true friend. And for that, she had earned a place in their extended family.

She was so easy to talk to. They went so far back in each other’s lives that he could converse without having to explain the back story, so to speak. He could just jump right in and unload.

Roxanne Hunter, in so many ways, was a sight for sore eyes.

spare me the drama 2

Review:

This is one of those stories that kinda fits in a few different places – more women’s fiction than romance, I think, with bits of family drama, overcoming grief, finding love, and recognizing (and overcoming) personal issues.  And while it wasn’t quite what I expected, that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it 🙂

Ten (yes, 10!) distinctly individual people living in one house means there is a lot going on with all of them.  Plus, with the mom’s somewhat recent death they have had a lot of adjusting to do.  Even more so when glamorous & successful businesswoman Roxanne comes back into their lives.

Roxanne has given up on ever having a family of her own and considers herself damaged goods, but a last minute party invitation that has her back with the Leon family may prove her wrong.  Of course, her insecurities aren’t going to make things very easy … and with so many people involved there is a lot that could go wrong.

Spare Me the Drama is quirky and fun but it’s also full of heart.  I really enjoyed seeing the interactions between Martin’s family.  They are all so unique but they have somehow managed to find a way to make things work for them in their new single parent world.  It was also interesting to see how all of them, even Martin, handle Roxanne & her totally different lifestyle and how the possibility of a new romance affected them all.  It’s complicated on all sides but it made getting to the last page all the more impressive.

by Stacy Eaton

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Blurb:

Trinity Morris, co-founder of You’re Not Alone, has a domestic violence past that still haunts her ten years later. She is devoted to helping victims find freedom and to sharing information on how to help them through their emotional and violent trials. While Trinity is presenting at a seminar, she comes across Gavin, a police officer who knows her past all too well.

It’s been ten years since he last saw her, but the moment Gavin’s eyes land on her, he’s intent on getting to know the woman who has haunted his dreams all these years.

Can Gavin break through the wall that Trinity has built around herself, or will the present and the past collide and take her away from him again?

TRINITY

It wasn’t that I didn’t like to do these seminars, I did. I mean, who better to educate people on this topic than a person who had gone through it firsthand, right? If it weren’t so damned mentally exhausting to relive the memories, then standing up in front of the crowd wouldn’t be so bad—maybe.

I unscrewed the cap of my water bottle and put the bottle to my lips. The cool liquid slipped into my dry mouth, and I swished it around softly for a moment as I glanced around at the audience in the large auditorium.

About a hundred and fifty people sat in dark burgundy theater-style chairs, some bouncing slowly on the seat hinges, others leaning on the armrests holding their heads up with their fists as they tried to keep their eyes open and listen to the monotonous speaker on the main floor below them.

Most of the people in attendance were male, although sporadically interspersed through the group were women. A tingle of fear snaked down my spine. Many years ago, it was people similar to these from whom I had been hidden, or they had simply ignored the signs they had seen. No, I had been hidden.

I closed my eyes tightly and clenched my jaw. Not all of them had ignored the hidden knowledge, I said to myself as I screwed the lid back onto the clear plastic bottle and let it rest on my lap. The secret truth had been solidly hidden behind the well-groomed walls of the house in which we had lived. No one had known the awful truth, or if they had, they’d ignored it. It wasn’t until the fateful night that anyone actually saw the product of the horror that I’d lived in every day for several years. Some didn’t believe it even after they heard the facts and saw the many bruises on my body.

I blew out a slow steady stream of air. My attention was drawn back to the stage area of the auditorium. The male speaker was just finishing up his segment; the audience appeared to understand this as they began to fidget even more, as if to make a run for it at the first chance. They knew that when he was done droning on, they would get a break to eat the catered lunch that was provided before the afternoon segment began—my segment.

My phone vibrated in my suit jacket pocket, and I slipped my hand inside. The number on the screen was from my coworker at the shelter and I made my way to the door. I would take my call in the hallway so as not to disturb the end of the lecture.

I glanced over my shoulder at the speaker. Yeah, it was a lecture, and there was no wonder these guys were falling asleep. I would be too if I had to listen to this guy talk about the legal aspects of dealing with victims and prosecuting suspects with as much excitement as a bullfrog sitting on a rock in the rain. I pushed open the door and slipped out into the hallway as I tapped my screen to answer my phone.

“Hey, Brooke, what’s up?” With my phone to my ear, I walked down the corridor of the hotel’s corporate area. The dark red carpet under my feet cushioned my steps as I approached a glass balcony that overlooked the main entrance two floors down. Glass, chrome, and highly-polished dark wood sparkled below. A man sat in a chair reading a newspaper, his closed briefcase beside him.

“You’re not speaking yet are you?” she asked quickly.

“Would I answer the phone if I was?”

She laughed on the other end, “No, well, you never know, you might if you thought it was important enough.”

The doors down the hallway opened and the attendees starting converging on me. I stepped away from the balcony edge and into a corner so I was out of their way. I learned a very long time ago: Never step in the way of hungry men and their food, especially when the food was free.

“Actually, they’re just breaking for lunch. I’m up right after. Why I always get stuck with them after they are fed is beyond me. It’s so much harder to keep them awake once they have full stomachs.”

The men and woman staggered past, some alone, some walking in groups. More than one person mumbled about the speaker putting them to sleep. I smiled and turned my back to them, pushing the phone closer to my ear so I could hear Brooke’s reply over the loud movement of people.

“Trinity, we all know that they put you on in the afternoon because you keep them awake!” Her soft laugh flowed through the line, calming me. “Nothing like a beautiful woman with a sexy voice to keep them tuned in.”

I shook my head, “Yeah, that’s me alright.” Not, I thought to myself.

“Oh, let’s not go there again. You know you are a beautiful woman. Did you forget to look in the mirror this morning?” I heard a metal drawer being closed through the speaker of the phone; she must have taken her purse out so she could head to lunch.

I decided to ignore her statement. “Did you need something?” I was trying to get her attention back to why she had called and off of me.

“No, I didn’t need anything. I wanted to check on you.” Her voice grew softer, “I know how you get when you have to do these talks.”

She did know me well. Brooke Patterson and I had been friends for almost ten years, and it was to her that I turned when the demons reared their ugly heads and tormented me. Not only were we friends, but we were partners in business. Both of us had lived through years of intense circumstances and had come out alive. We spent all our time now trying to educate people so that they could help others who had lived like we once had.

Our nonprofit organization was called “You’re Not Alone”, and we worked with victims of domestic violence. We had started it about eight years ago, and it was the largest organization in the tri-state area.

It was because of what Brooke and I had lived through personally that we were able to do so well with the organization. We weren’t just people who had learned through college courses, we had lived through the horror firsthand.

“I’m fine, Brooke, I appreciate that, but I’m fine.” I turned back around as the hallway quieted. Only a few stragglers meandered towards the food.

I watched one man walk by, his cellphone in his left hand, the pointer finger from his right hand sliding over the screen. He had strong forearms that peeked out of the rolled-up sleeves of his dark green dress shirt. I glanced up at the side of his face as he passed and sucked in a sudden breath.

The curve of his jaw, the angle of his nose, the short cut of his brown hair, all brought back a memory so suddenly, that I froze while only my eyeballs traced his path to the stairs. My feet froze in place while my heart galloped like a horse from a burning barn.

“Trinity, are you alright?” Brooke’s voice reached my ears, but I couldn’t speak. “Trinity? Trinity, are you still there?”

The man disappeared down the stairs and still I found myself stuck in place, stuck in a memory.

Brooke’s shrill voice in my ear yelling my name finally broke me out of my startled daze, and I shook my head to clear it. It couldn’t be him, it couldn’t be.

“Yeah, I’m here,” I cleared my throat of the sudden emotion that had lodged there.

“What happened?” she all but yelled in my ear.

“Nothing,” I cleared my throat again, “nothing. I dropped the phone, sorry.” I closed my eyes, willing my heart to slow down again.

“Oh, okay. Well, you sure you’re alright to do this?” Her voice was back in its normal friendly range.

I swallowed, “Yes, I’m fine. It’s just another lecture, no big deal.”

“You keep telling yourself that.” She laughed and we said our goodbyes after I told her I would call her when I was done.

I hit the button to end the call and scanned the area. Other than some employees bustling into the lecture hall to clean it up, I was alone. No, not alone, I was just by myself for the moment. I thought about going down to where they were serving lunch, but I rejected it.

I was usually a bit uneasy before I spoke, and now my empty stomach seemed to be roiling after that memory had passed through my mind.

I glanced around the hallway, intent on finding a peaceful place where I could gather my thoughts. I saw the door down the hallway and quickly entered the women’s restroom.

Inside, I found exactly what I needed, and I sank into a deep burgundy chair in the sitting area. Closing my eyes, I took a few deep breaths.

On the back of my eyelids the memory flashed again, only this time it was with the pulsing flash of amber ambulance lights around me. The strong solid chin, the thin pointed nose, the soft green eyes set back behind thick eyelashes blinked with the lights of the emergency vehicle. He wasn’t looking at me as my eyes opened, he had turned so I only saw his profile for a moment before it was replaced with other people and darkness sank in around me again.

I felt my pulse ticking quickly in my throat, the pain from that moment so long ago almost as alive as the memory. I lifted my hand and allowed my fingers to slide over my throat. I took a shaky breath to shove away the pain.

That was ten years ago and far away from here. There was no way that could be him.

Three Weeks to Wed hi resThree Weeks to Wed

The Worthingtons series

by Ella Quinn

Blurb:

In the first book of her dazzling new series, bestselling author Ella Quinn introduces the soon-to-be Earl and Countess of Worthington—lovers who have more in common than they yet know. The future promises to be far from boring…

Lady Grace Carpenter is ready to seize the day—or rather, the night—with the most compelling man she’s ever known. Marriage would mean losing guardianship of her beloved siblings, and surely no sane gentleman will take on seven children not his own. But if she can have one anonymous tryst with Mattheus, Earl of Worthington, Grace will be content to live out the rest of her life as a spinster.

Matt had almost given up hope of finding a wife who could engage his mind as well as his body. And now this sensual, intelligent woman is offering herself to him. What could be more perfect? Except that after one wanton night, the mysterious Grace refuses to have anything to do with him. Amid the distractions of the Season he must convince her, one delicious encounter at a time, that no obstacle—or family—is too much for a man who’s discovered his heart’s desire…

“Oh, the tangled webs we weave…especially when our hearts are involved. Three Weeks to Wed is a delightfully heartwarming escape into the sparkling world of the Regency.  Ella Quinn weaves magic.” —Cathy Maxwell, New York Times bestselling author

Excerpt:

Tears started in Grace’s eyes, and her voice trembled. “I am not sure I should tell anyone. I—I don’t know what you will think of me. In fact, I wouldn’t blame you if you cut my acquaintance. Oh, Phoebe, I’ve done something so stupid and incredibly wrongheaded. It wouldn’t surprise me if you cut my acquaintance.”

Phoebe tightened her grip on Grace’s hands, holding them firmly. “My dear, dear friend, we’ve known each other since we were children. Even if it turns out that I do not agree with what you’ve done, I’d not turn from you.”

Grace regarded her friend. She really didn’t have anyone else she would even consider telling. “I am in love.”

Phoebe’s laugh was a musical tinkle. “Grace, falling in love isn’t the end of the world. It complicates things for you, to be sure. Yet there must be something that could be worked out.”

Removing her hands from Phoebe’s, Grace hid her face in them for a moment, before finally meeting Phoebe’s steady gaze. “You don’t understand. He doesn’t know who I am.”

Phoebe tilted her head, puzzled. “I think you’d best start at the beginning.”

Grace nodded. If nothing else, maybe she’d feel better if she could talk about it. She told her friend about the night at the inn, and when she burst into tears, Phoebe held Grace until she was calm enough to continue. “I thought, if I could have just the one night, I’d know what it was all about, and never being able to marry wouldn’t bother me so much.”

“Grace, are you—?”

That was the only blessing. She wasn’t breeding. “No.”

Phoebe let out a sigh of relief. “Well that is something at least.” She rubbed her forehead. “All of this makes much more sense now. My dear, there is no easy way to tell you what I’m about to say . . . Worthington is searching for you.”

Grace sat up with a start. Why would he do that and what if it got out? “Oh no. He can’t be. This is terrible. Phoebe, how do you know?”

She handed Grace another cup of tea. “He came to see Marcus when I was on morning visits and described you. Marcus, of course, has never seen you, so he was unable to help him. Later he gave me Worthington’s description. I knew who it was immediately. Worthington is a very good artist and has an eye for detail. I just couldn’t, for the life of me, figure out why he wanted to find you.”

As both a history nerd and a romance fan, I have a soft spot for historical romance. I adore Regency historicals, but when it came to writing my own book, I wanted to try something different.

The Gilded Age (another name for the late-Victorian period in America, when wealth was conspicuous—think of an Edith Wharton novel) turned out to be pretty similar to the Regency in a lot of ways. The New York City of the 1890s was pretty similar to London in the 1810s in a few surprising ways. For example, society was ruled by an elite group of aristocrats. London had the ton, New York had Mrs. Astor’s 400, so called because it was said society queen Caroline Astor’s ballroom could fit exactly 400 people. Londoners had their country estates to retreat to during the summer; the wealthiest New Yorkers had mansions in Newport. Both periods featured elaborate balls, expensive fashion, liveried servants, conspicuous spending.

I liked the Gilded Age as a setting for a lot of these reasons. Ten Days in August features a ballroom scene that I think a lot of Regency fans will find somewhat familiar. My hero Hank has a childhood friend named Amelia who has married a steel magnate and been sucked into the upper echelon of New York society. She’s adapted nicely, though hasn’t been completely embraced by the elite. (Not to mention, she throws her ball in the off-season, so most other society members are out of town.) Of course, I put kind of a different spin on the ballroom scene, but you’ll have to read the book to find out more about that.

Both settings had another significant thing in common, though, and it’s something that doesn’t often find its way into romance novels: both London and New York had people living in extreme poverty mere blocks from the shiny uptown mansions. Specifically, New York had a large immigrant population that was mostly confined to neighborhoods like the Lower East Side, where large families were crammed into two-room apartments in ramshackle apartment buildings. Ten Days includes some of that, too, since it’s where my other here, Nicky, comes from. Nicky comes from a big Irish family, and he’s moved away from his family—but not far. As a writer, I find that juxtaposition interesting. Nicky straddles the line in some ways between the crowded tenements and the uptown wealth by virtue of his job at a dance hall sometimes frequented by wealthy men.

In other words, I chose a setting that, even if you know very little about it, you may still find recognizable elements.

Ten Days In AugustTen Days in August

by Kate McMurray

Blurb:

From the Lower East Side to uptown Manhattan, a curious detective searches for clues on the sidewalks of New York—and finds a secret world of forbidden love that’s too hot to handle…

New York City, 1896. As the temperatures rise, so does the crime rate. At the peak of this sizzling heat wave, police inspector Hank Brandt is called to investigate the scandalous murder of a male prostitute. His colleagues think he should drop the case, but Hank’s interest is piqued, especially when he meets the intriguing key witness: a beautiful female impersonator named Nicholas Sharp.

As a nightclub performer living on the fringes of society, Nicky is reluctant to place his trust in a cop—even one as handsome as Hank. With Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt cracking down on vice in the city, Nicky’s afraid that getting involved could end his career. But when he realizes his life is in danger—and Hank is his strongest ally—the two men hit the streets together to solve the crime. From the tawdry tenements of the Lower East Side to the moneyed mansions of Fifth Avenue, Nicky and Hank are determined to uncover the truth. But when things start heating up between them, it’s not just their lives on the line. It’s their love…

Excerpt:

As Shakespeare remarked, the course of true love never does run smooth, especially when the woman in question has been pressured into marrying someone else. Violet Winters and Jack Sutter have loved each other since childhood, but his stern Evangelical family disapproves of her world, and her wealthy family refuses to let her marry a man poor by their standards.  Yet even after her marriage, Jack and Violet keep up a chaste, sentimental romance, mostly through letters and what occasional meetings they can manage.

Until, as usually was the case before birth control became legal, the inevitable result of being married happens to Violet: she’s pregnant.

It took Violet several weeks before she could bear to tell Jack. Although she would have preferred to write him a letter, it seemed too cowardly. She waited until her husband was out of town on business, then invited Jack over for a Sunday afternoon. Even though she told herself that she should be glad that her dangerous romance would end, by the time that he arrived, she was so upset that she could barely say hello to him. She took him into her household office, where they could shut the door and have some privacy.

As they sat down together on the little settee across from her desk, Jack caught her by the shoulders and kissed her. Violet pulled away. “I really do love you. Do you believe me?”

“Of course I do, but what’s so wrong?”

“I’m going to have a baby. That’s what.”

Jack stared at her, unmoving, as if he’d been turned to stone like a sorcerer’s victim in an old fairy-tale.

“I’m sorry,” Violet stammered out. “I’m really really sorry.”

“No call for you to apologize to me.”  Jack stood up, hesitated, then strode across the room. At the door, he turned back to study her face with cold eyes. Violet could hardly breathe.

“You don’t believe me, do you?” she said.  “I knew you’d hate me, but I really do love you.”

“Well, I love you, too. Why do you think I’m so damn mad?”

“There’s nothing I can do about it,” she said. “You didn’t think Maury would never want to — ”

“Just shut up about it.”

“Don’t you talk to me that way, Jack Sutter!”

“I’ll talk to you any damn way I want to.”

Violet crossed her arms over her chest and glared at him. He strode for the door. He threw it open, stepped out into the hall, then paused and looked back.

“Well?” Violet grabbed a book from her desk.

Jack slammed the door shut just as she flung the book straight at him. It bounced off the door and lay, pages flapping, on the carpet.

“I wish I’d hit him,” she said. “I’m glad he’s gone. I’m glad it’s over.”

But she knew she lied.

Author Info:

Kathryn Jordan lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband, two cats, and a vagrant skunk.  Although she spent her childhood in a Great Lakes industrial city, she became a confirmed Californian at age nine, when her family relocated to Santa Barbara, the “Santa Luisa” of the novel.  All it took was one winter without five feet of snow turning into black urban slush to convince her that the move had been worthwhile.  FLICKERS, her first historical novel, is a new departure for her career. Excerpt:

“It would mean nothing, you see. Probably a very bad suggestion.” He held his breath, his entire body taut, not knowing what he wanted her to say. Of course, he wanted to kiss her, but he wanted to kiss her, not pretend it was some sort of lesson. Then again, he really wanted to kiss her no matter what the reason.

“Yes. Very bad.” She didn’t sound at all certain. “But if we did kiss, at least I could honestly say I’d been kissed. Should anyone ask.”

The relief that Charlie felt was nearly dizzying. “Very true. And I’ll let you kiss me, so there will be no doubt about who is kissing whom.”

“Oh, Charlie,” she said, almost sounding weepy. “You are the kindest man I know.”

Guilt gnawed at him, but not enough to change his mind. For nearly two years he’d imagined what it would be like to kiss Rose, and now he finally had his chance. He turned, his left arm resting on her mattress, the other straight by his side, right hand pressed flat against the rough wood floor. Then he felt her hand, just one, spanning his cheek, her fingertips at his jaw so that she might pull him toward her if she wanted to. Instead, she moved forward, keeping him still, until her nose butted up against his, making her laugh.

“You have to tilt your head just a bit,” he said, trying to keep his voice from shaking. He closed his eyes, even though it was black as pitch in the room.

“Tilt,” she whispered, her mouth so close to his, it was all he could do to keep that hand planted firmly on the floor and not drag her to him. And then, heaven on earth found him when her lips touched his, soft, hardly felt, but by God the most glorious thing that had happened to him in his adult life. She withdrew and he could almost picture her face, with her brow likely furrowed. It had not been much of a kiss. “There, we’ve kissed,” she said, but she was still so close he could feel her soft breath against his face.

“Have we?”

“Haven’t we?”

“We’ve touched lips. We have not kissed.”

“Isn’t that the same?”

Charlie chuckled. “Let’s try again. I’ll show you, just a bit, and you can stop anytime you’d like.” But please, please don’t stop, at least not too soon.

This time, she pulled him toward her and planted her lips against his. “Now what?” she asked against his mouth, her voice slightly muffled, and he smiled.

“You’re smiling. Don’t laugh at me, Charlie.”

“No. I wasn’t.”

He moved his mouth, just a bit, just enough to show her how it was done, this kissing stuff. He pulled at her lower lip and he thought he heard her gasp, but the engine noise was too loud and he couldn’t be certain. He teased her, first her bottom lip, then her top, then slanted his head a bit more, deepening the kiss just a bit, just enough to show her but not enough to frighten her.

When she moved her lips against his, finally, finally, he fisted his hands to keep them where they were, for his body was screaming to pull her close. She sighed–he felt it more than heard it–and he pulled back more for self-preservation than anything else.

“There. See? It’s not awful.” He knew his voice sounded hoarse, his tone gruff, but he couldn’t utter a gentler sound at the moment.

“No, not awful,” she said, sounding far less affected by the kiss than he. “Thank you, Charlie.”

Thank you, Charlie. It felt like a punch to his gut, those words. Because they were uttered precisely the way she would have thanked him for saddling her horse or handing her up. Thank you, Charlie.

He had to leave, had to get out of this room where his stupid desires, his foolish dreams seemed to be laughing at him. What the hell had he been thinking? That he could trick her into kissing him and then she’d fall head over heels in love with him and want to marry him instead of some wealthy American stranger?

He stood and climbed up on his bunk, staring blindly at the ceiling, and waited perhaps five minutes before saying, “I’m going to get some air, my lady. I’ll be right back.” He jumped down from his bunk and walked out of the tiny cabin, not aware that he’d called her my lady until the door was shut. How quickly he reverted to the servant when he was treated like one. In that moment, as he pressed the back of his head painfully against the stateroom door, he hated himself. He hated what he represented, he hated his lust and love for Rose, he hated the fact he was poor, that his hands were rough, that his boots were dull and worn. Charlie stalked around the common room, finally settling at a table, alone in the dark, unwilling to return to the stateroom where he would have to listen to her lilting voice, breathe in her perfect scent, wish he could lie next to her.

Thank you, Charlie.

Bloody hell, if he wasn’t the biggest fool on the face of the earth.

Book Review, Cedar Ridge series, Jill Shalvis, Nobody But You

I am so beyond thrilled to have Jill Shalvis stop by today to answer a couple of real quick questions (she is a busy lady 🙂 ) and share the newest in the Cedar Ridge series, Nobody But You.

We’ve seen the others in this series before (Second Chance Summer & My Kind of Wonderful) and once again Shalvis delivers a total knockout!

*****

In the book Jacob’s mom, Carrie, is sick. What was it like writing a character that had dementia?

Having family experience with this, I just wanted to show that not every minute of it is torturous.

Describe what readers can expect from a Jill Shalvis romance in 140 characters.

Hot guys, fun, sexy, humor, hot guys, love, girl power and as it can’t be said enough, more hot guys. 🙂

Finish this sentence: My heroine will never…

Go quietly into the night… 🙂

Cedar Ridge series

by Jill Shalvis

Blurb:

When Jacob was injured in the war, it changed him for life. Now all he wants to do is come home to Cedar Ridge, settle in at his lakeside cabin and get some much-needed peace and quiet. But there’s no peace to be had when he finds a spitfire of a woman camping out on his property. Half the time he’s not sure whether he wants to spank her or kiss–or maybe both. He’s in a dark place and a dark mood, and here’s this wildly hot woman who is also funny and light and may be the balm be needs to soothe his aching soul.

Sophie Marren is pretty much penniless after leaving her abusive husband. She doesn’t have the money to pay rent or the slip fees for docking the boat where she’s been sleeping. She was getting along just perfectly until the good-looking, brooding, I’m-too-sexy-for-myself guy moves into the lake cabin that the slip belongs to. Sure he’s hot as the noon sun with those dark lens and even darker ‘tude, but god forbid she tie herself to another man who’s always telling her what to do. But the more she gets to know Jacob, the more she sees how willing he is to battle for her wounded heart…a battle she might just let him win.

Excerpt:

She eyed the bench a long beat but did eventually sit, perching primly as far from him as she could get and yet still be close enough to grab the bottle.

Smart woman.

She took the Scotch and drank. Her eyes watered and she coughed as she handed it to him. With a sigh, she leaned back to study the night sky. Her bared throat was slim and creamy smooth. An unexpected temptation. Remembering the flash of pain and vulnerability she’d unwittingly revealed, and that for whatever reason he’d somehow added to it, he spoke. “I’m sorry.”

She glanced at him as if she’d never heard a man apologize before in her life. “For…breathing?” she asked. “Having a penis? What?”

“You were upset because you didn’t know I was a Kincaid.”

She sighed. “That was just me looking for a reason to be mad at you so I wouldn’t…”

She bit her lower lip, clearly not wanting to go on.

But now he had to know. “So you wouldn’t what?”

“Nothing,” she said. “It’s just that I’m trying to make better choices.”

“Of which I wouldn’t be one.”

“It’s not necessarily your fault,” she said. “It’s that you’re a man.”

“Guilty as charged.”

“And I’m off men right now.”

“And on…women?” he asked with admittedly more than a little fascination.

She rolled her eyes. “I’m on no one, but thank you for proving my point on men.”

“I get that,” he said. “But being off men doesn’t seem to be making you very happy, or sound like a whole lot of fun.”

“Maybe I don’t need fun.”

He understood that. He’d felt the same way since Brett died. “What do you need?” he asked, honestly wanting to know more about her.

Instead of answering, she reached for the bottle. He waited until she met his gaze before letting go.

“Nothing,” she said a little too quickly. “Everything’s…perfect.”

“And your glass is half full,” he said. “So you’ve said.”

But he didn’t believe her. “How about a game?”

“I don’t play games.”

Now, that wasn’t exactly true. Whether she knew it or not, she’d been playing with  his head since he’d first laid eyes on her. “Three truths and a lie,” he said.

She stared at him. “As in you tell me three truths and a lie, and I pick out the lie?”

“Yes.”

She considered this. “What do I get if I win?”

“What do you want?”

For the briefest of beats, her gaze dropped to his mouth.

Oh, hell yeah, he thought. Want me…

“My first boyfriend taught me that game,” she said.

“What did the winner get?”

“A kiss.”

Definitely still playing with his head… “Is that what you want, Sophie? A kiss?”

Again she stared at his mouth before dropping eye contact and wrapping that eye-stopping pink robe tighter around her body. “Do you?” she asked.

“Hell yes.”

Her gaze flew to his.

“Problem is,” he said conversationally, “if I kissed you, I don’t think I’d be able to stop.”

Her mouth literally fell open. The pulse at the base of her throat jumped. And she seemed to lose her words.

He went on. “But you should know, I don’t lose. That means you’ll have to tell me three truths and a lie.” And he’d hopefully get to know more about her.

She closed her mouth to bite her lower lip in what could’ve been indecision or excitement. Obviously he was hoping for the latter. “But hey, if you’re not sure you can handle losing, we can just forget about it,” he said.

The challenge lifted her chin and put sparks in her eyes. That’s it, babe. Show me what you’ve got.

“Bring it,” she said.

Review:

I love Sophie but I still get a little tired of his flip-flopping emotions – luckily Jacob has a lot more patience with her than I do 🙂  Other than that though she’s great.  I understand where she’s coming from, with her ex and her family, and it makes her issues believable.  I love how saucy she is and how she’s willing to give Jacob heck but still be there for him when he needs it.

I’ve been anxious to get to Jacob’s story, mainly because he’s the unknown Kincaid (although Kenna gives him a run for his money there 🙂 ).  Shalvis does a good job of showing his conflicting emotions over his choices and how the past decade without his family, plus everything that he’s seen and done, has impacted him.  I love watching him work his way back to a happy place with the rest of the siblings.  And I adore his & Hud’s relationship with their mom.  It’s both sweet and fun and I love them all together.

Once again Shalvis delivers a winner and I can’t wait to see where she goes next!

Entangled Bliss

Blurb:

He wasn’t what she was expecting…

Derek Carmichael has harbored a secret crush on his best friend’s older sister for years, but she’s always been out of his reach. Now that Hannah is back in their hometown and newly single, suddenly the five-year age gap doesn’t seem so huge. But convincing her to see him as more than just the kid she used to know is another story.

Hannah Willmett can’t believe how grown-up Derek Carmichael has become. The troubled kid from her youth has turned into a sexy, successful TV celebrity, but Hannah’s wary of his player past and the rampant rumors connecting him to beautiful socialites. Still, she can’t help but give in when their attraction reaches a boiling point.

Trying to keep their fling a secret from her overprotective brother is one thing, but when Hannah finds herself unexpectedly expecting, her life is thrown upside down. She and Derek may be becoming parents together, but that’s no basis for a happily-ever-after.

Excerpt:

“Hey, pecan pie.” Derek beamed as he lifted the pie dish from the cooler. “You made it for me?”

“Just my way of saying thanks.”

“There are other ways of saying thanks.” His gaze drifted to her lips, leaving her in no doubt what he had in mind. “Ways just as sweet and tasty as pecan pie.”

Her trigger-happy desire surged again as she imagined his lips on hers. “God, Derek, I thought we were keeping things platonic.”

“I thought so too, but you brought pecan pie.”

“Pecan pie? That’s a turn on?”

“Well, yeah. That, and those shorts you’re wearing.” His gaze lowered to the denim cutoffs hugging her hips. “I think you put on those itty-bitty shorts on purpose just to torture me, didn’t you?”

She gulped. “It’s a hot day, and they were the only shorts I had.” Liar. She had other, more modest shorts, but for some reason she’d chosen these tight-fitting cutoffs with the frayed hem. Again, she blamed her subconscious.

He snickered at her, and she knew she wasn’t fooling anyone. “You’re right. It is a hot day. In fact, it’s so hot I think I need to do this.” He stretched his arm behind his neck, gripped his T-shirt, and pulled it off in one swoop. Tossing aside the T-shirt, he stretched out in the sun. “Ah, yeah. That feels so much better.”

Her mouth fell open, and she might have made a choking sound. Her eyeballs felt like they were on stalks as she gawked at Derek’s naked torso. What a magnificent sight. Sunlight bounced off his smooth pecs and bulging biceps. He didn’t have an ounce of fat on him. Hard, broad shoulders narrowed to lean hips showcased by his low-slung jeans.

He rubbed his chest, drawing her attention to the trail of fine, dark hair that tracked down the center of his body. “What’s the matter, babe?”

Babe. Heat seeped through her pores. Just one “babe” from him, and she was already melting.

“Uh, n-nothing,” she managed to stutter. For the life of her, she still couldn’t tear her eyes away from him.

“See something you like?”

She was almost panting now. Dammit, he was so devilishly tempting, but she was not going to cave in.

“Yes, I do.” She leaned toward him, slow and deliberate, until his eyes widened and he licked his lips in anticipation. Then she stretched her arm across him, brushing against his naked chest, and grabbed a bottle of iced tea. “This is what I’d like.”

She twisted the cap off and tipped a deep gulp of liquid down her throat. When she lowered the bottle, Derek was grinning at her.

“Nice move. You play hard.”

Her blood fizzed like she’d drunk champagne. It was such fun teasing and flirting with Derek. It made her realize she wasn’t old after all and that Derek brought something out of her that no one else did.

“You didn’t think I’d swoon at your feet just because you bared your chest, did you?”

“A guy can hope.”

Review:

I think I was expecting the baby part of this to be the big stumbling block for them but that doesn’t come up until must later in the book.  The beginning is the back and forth for Hannah & her feelings for Derek.  I can kinda see where she’s coming from because she’s known him since he was barely a teenager and she was in a motherly role with her brother at that point so that would have meant she saw Derek as the same.  Now she’s coming out of a bad marriage with an immature guy so it’ll be hard for her to see Derek as mature, not a kid.  But she’s definitely not giving him enough credit 🙂  Derek has done a lot of growing up over the years but he never outgrew his crush on Hannah … and now he has the chance to act on it.  He’s just got to convince her that he’s all man.

This is another of those stories where their issues are caused by their lack of communication – making assumptions, not talking and reacting with emotion.  If they just got over themselves and talked it would have been a much shorter book (but where is the fun in that 🙂 ).  Hannah is very caught up in what she “should” be doing and how it will look to others that she forgets to ask herself what she wants to do.  And because of Derek’s childhood he still has some issues with acceptance, regardless of how successful he’s been since he left town.  I feel bad for him but that causes a lot of his issues with Hannah because he reacts with his heart instead of his head whenever he feels unwanted.

I know that for some people the communication issue is a no-go so I want to warn you now.  I’m usually on the not-a-fan side when it comes to that kind of story but for me Kwan handles it really well.  I never got overly frustrated or wanted to smack them and I always consider that a win 🙂  It definitely isn’t everyone’s favorite storyline but her writing is so well done and that helps to make it work.

by Maya Rodale

Releasing February 23, 2016

Avon

Blurb:

In the first hilarious entry in her brand new series, USA Today bestselling author Maya Rodale re-invents a love story we all know and cherish.

Lord Darcy is the epitome of perfect

Lord Darcy is the quintessential Englishman: wealthy, titled, impossibly proper and horrified that a pack of Americans have inherited one of England’s most respected dukedoms. But his manners, his infamous self-restraint and better judgment fly out the window when he finds himself with the maddening American girl next door.

Lady Bridget is the opposite of perfect

Lady Bridget Cavendish has grand-but thwarted-plans to become a Perfect Lady and take the haute ton by storm. In her diary, Bridget records her disastrous attempts to assimilate in London high society, her adoration of the handsome rogue next door, her loathing of the Dreadful Lord Darcy and some truly scandalous secrets that could ruin them all.

They cannot stand each other-and yet they cannot stay away

It was loathing at first sight for Lady Bridget and Lord Darcy. But their paths keep crossing…and somehow involve kissing. When Lady Bridget’s diary goes missing, both Darcy and Bridget must decide what matters most of all-a sterling reputation or a perfectly imperfect love.

One would think that having one’s brother inherit a dukedom was a stroke of good fortune that would transform their lives from ho-hum to utterly fantastic. One would think that until one was on a reducing diet, stuffed into a tightly laced corset, and forced to practice walking backward.

“Once again, Lady Bridget,” the duchess said crisply.

She was Lady Bridget Cavendish now. Before she had just been Bridget Cavendish of Duncraven farm in Maryland. But then a letter had arrived one day, with the unexpected news that James was now a duke and they were all to leave everything behind and travel to England, immediately.

“Yes Lady Bridget, once more please,” Amelia said with a smirk.

“Do shut up, Amelia,” Bridget said, under her breath. Younger sisters were quite annoying, on any continent.

“It’s ‘Do shut up, Lady Amelia,’” Claire, the oldest sister, corrected. She found all the formality as ridiculous as the rest of their family, much to the despair of the duchess.

Somewhere about the massive house—probably in the stables, even though the duchess made it perfectly clear dukes were above mucking about in the stables—was her brother, James. Or, as he was now to be known, His Grace, the Duke of Durham. Dukes had many responsibilities, it seemed, but walking backward in a gown with an excessively long train was not one of them.

Before her, with sharp blue eyes and perfectly coiffed blond hair, was Josephine Marie Elizabeth Cavendish, Her Grace, the Duchess of Durham, widow of the previous duke, and aunt to the Cavendish siblings.

One did not call her Josie. Amelia had asked.

“Remind me why we are learning to do something as ridiculous as walk backward?” Claire asked. From a young age, she had spent her free hours devoted to the study of mathematics, otherwise known as Important Work. Bridget’s head ached just to think about it.

“It is for your presentation at court,” the duchess replied. “Which is necessary before your debut in society, which you must do in order to find a husband, which a lady must do, lest she become an impoverished spinster.”

“What if we do not wish for a husband?” Amelia asked.

“What a silly question,” the duchess replied. “Lady Bridget, once again.”

At the duchess’s request, Bridget sank into a curtsy. They had practiced this extensively on Tuesday afternoon. Then, with as much grace as she could muster, Bridget rose and began to elegantly glide backward. Or so she tried; feats of grace did not come easily to her (a point upon which their dancing instructor would absolutely agree). Nothing about being a True Lady did. Bridget had daydreamt through lessons on the order of precedence amongst members of the haute ton, how to properly pour a cup of tea, and all the other lessons on etiquette and deportment they endured morning, noon, and night.

“Now Lady Amelia, it is your turn.”

While the duchess’s attention was focused on her sisters, Bridget took advantage of her distraction to continue walking backward until she had crossed the length of the ballroom, then she continued through the large double doors and halfway down the corridor, at which point she turned, lifted her skirts, and proceeded to the kitchens. Reducing diet, deportment lessons, and True Lady-ness be damned.

Review:

There are going to be people who do not like this book because they feel it follows too closely to the stories that it takes inspiration from – Pride & Prejudice, Bridget Jones’ Diary and Mean Girls.  I’ve seen a lot of reviews that say it steals word for word from them (which I didn’t see that much of but I don’t necessarily have them all memorized).

Buuuuuuuuut, there are also going to be people like me who really like some (or all) of those stories and love the idea of an author having a good time with the material.  P&P and Bridget are two of my favorites stories (ones that I go back to time & again) and I found it fun to read someone else’s re-imagining of them.

So before picking it up decide if you are OK with a close retelling – you are going to see familiar things but in unfamiliar ways, so you have to take that into account 🙂
