Book Review, Tonya Burrows, Too Wilde to Tame, Wilde Security series

We’ve seen Tonya Burrows quite a few times before and I’m super excited to bring everyone the final installment in her Wilde Security series.  We’re gonna celebrate Friday with a sexy, but haunted soldier … and he’s gonna finally meet his match!

Wilde Security, #5

by Tonya Burrows

Publication Date: February 27, 2017

Genres: Adult, Entangled: Ignite, Contemporary, Romance

Blurb:

For three years, ballet teacher Natalie Taggart has lived across the hall from grumpy, reclusive, sexy Greer Wilde. Save for a handful of hellos and the occasional heated glance, they never spoke to each other.

Until the morning Greer lands on her doorstep, bleeding, beaten, and bullet-riddled.

Greer doesn’t need or want her help. He has only one goal: revenge. And nobody—not his brothers, and certainly not his too-hot-for-his-sanity next-door neighbor—is going to get in his way.

Excerpt:

“Who said anything about a relationship?” She grinned as Greer’s scowl darkened. “Besides, if he’s divorced, that means he’s unattached. Sounds like a perfect partner for some horizontal dancing.”

He grumbled and tossed back the pills, then snatched the glass of water out of her hand. “Find a different partner.”

A little thrill danced through her heart, and she drew a deep breath to calm it. Even though he was trying to brush it off, he didn’t like the thought of her with Jesse. Was he jealous? She should take pity on him and tell him he had no reason to be—yes, Jesse was hot, but he wasn’t the neighbor she’d been crushing on for the last couple of years.

Except…

She kind of liked that he was jealous. Nice to know she wasn’t the only one to notice the tug of attraction between them.

Feeling bold, she asked, “A different partner? Like you?”

Well, he didn’t spit out his water. That was a good sign.

He swallowed the gulp he’d taken, then slowly lowered the glass to the coffee table. For a handful of seconds, he watched her, considering. Lust burned in his gaze as he swept it down her body. He was clearly playing out that horizontal dance in his mind’s eye.

But then he shook his head. “You’re too complicated.”

She planted her hands on her hips and glowered down at him. “Oh?” She laced the word with as much sarcasm as she could fit into one syllable. “I’m complicated?” She wasn’t the one with Syrian money in her wallet, a bullet hole in her side, and a connection with a top-secret military base.

“How’s that?”

If he was at all fazed by her snark, he didn’t show it. “You’re too close.”

“To what?” she demanded.

“To me.”

Review:

I’ve only read a couple of Burrows’s books (the first couple of the HORNET series and the first in the Wilde series) but I remember loving what I read.  I went through a period where I wasn’t all that interested in military/suspense romances so I missed quite a few in both series … and now I am SO regretting that decision!  I loved these men and the spunky women who brought them to heel.  I’m definitely adding her backlist to my TBR pile  🙂

Only having read one of the Wilde books I’m not sure how much the death of their parents played a part in their books, other than the obvious emotional issues.  It definitely takes front and center here where Greer is on a mission to revenge their deaths by taking out the man that killed them.  But you know it isn’t going to be as easy as that, right?  Injured, he lands on his neighbor’s doorstep and things only get more complicated from there.

Tally has an awesome mix of strength and heart.  She understands what Greer needs at any given moment, even if he resists her more often than not  🙂  She’s definitely what he needs whether he will admit it – single-mindedly focused on his mission, he might not want a pretty voice of reason to get in his way but that doesn’t stop her from getting involved.  I loved the back and forth between them.  They make a great couple and meeting her starts him on the path to being the man that he can be.

Without any other story to guide me, the who-dun-it around the Wilde family is intricate and feels nicely complete.  It kept me interested from start to finish and I was really satisfied with how it all tied together.  The story is just as much about Greer’s redemption and the relationship that he develops with Tally (and redevelops with his brothers) but Burrows doesn’t scrimp on the suspense element.

For someone who isn’t all that familiar with the Wilde’s I didn’t ever feel left out.  You can definitely start here but I have a feeling you’ll be adding some books to your TBR pile too!  And I think that returning readers will love to see some of the favorites again, but also feel a little sad that it is coming to an end.  But it won’t last long because Burrows is bound to give them something else great soon.

Excerpt:

They climbed in the sleigh and then Avery covered Jillian with a heavy lap blanket. “Are you ready?”

She nodded, clutching the thermos. “I am now.”

And then they were off, gliding over the snow. The snow muffled the sounds. And though the moon was hidden behind the clouds, it was still bright out. As they made their way through the field, Avery glanced over at Jillian. She was nestled beneath the plaid blanket and still clutching the thermos. She looked stunning. He should have brought her out here a long time ago.

“What are you smiling about?”

Jillian’s voice drew him from his thoughts. “Who’s smiling?”

“You are and you know it. So what’s up?”

“Nothing. I’m just enjoying the evening.” It was so much more than that, but he really didn’t want to risk ruining this moment. He’d worked so hard to pull it together. He wanted to savor their time together.

For a while they glided along in silence. He had a particular destination in mind. It didn’t have a name. It was just a spot where you could see for miles. And at night, it was like visiting a planetarium with all of the stars twinkling overhead.

“Are you warm enough?” he asked.

She nodded from inside her big, fuzzy hood. “I’m perfect. This is amazing. Do you take the sleigh out very often?”

He shook his head. “This is my first time. I usually come out here on horseback.” He slowed the horse to a stop before turning to Jillian. “I wanted to do something special for you. A way to thank you. You’ve always been there for me and my family, whether it was helping me with the Bake-Off or being the best nanny in the whole world.”

“You…you really think that?”

He’d obviously done a lousy job of communicating his thoughts in the past. He would have to do better going forward.

“I’m sorry I didn’t make that clear before.” He stared into her eyes. “I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me and my family.”

His gaze dipped to her lips. They were shiny and full. And he was overwhelmed with the desire to kiss her again. So what was holding him back?

They were all alone on this snowy evening. And as he’d come to discover while he was planning this evening, it was a very romantic setting. If he were ever to have a chance with her, it would start beneath the starlit sky. But should he risk it? Should he put himself out there again?

It wasn’t like he was asking her to marry him. It was a kiss—a simple, no-strings-attached kiss. It was a starting point.

He rested his arm over the back of the sleigh. His heart started to pound hard in his chest. He’d kissed a number of girls over the years on the rodeo circuit and he’d never put this much thought into it. But none of them had meant as much to him as Jillian. He leaned toward her.

Suddenly Jillian raised the thermos between them. “Hot chocolate?”

He settled back in his seat. Had he read the signs wrong? Was he that rusty where women were concerned?

Excerpt:

“If we do decide to go through with this, I need to be clear. I’m not looking for a relationship. I’ve been down that road once and don’t intend to ever travel it again. Fact is, I haven’t been with a woman more than once in years. Don’t even know the names of most of them. If that makes me sound like a jerk, I guess that’s what I am. But with you…”

Her chest squeezed as she waited for him to continue.

Reaching out, he took her hand. “You have to be certain you can accept me on my terms.”

Skye bit her lip, willing herself to stay calm. “Then I suppose you should be clear as to what they are.”

Dropping her hand, he sat down on the bed, patting the spot beside him.

“I’d rather stand.” Skye clasped her hands in front of her.

He leaned forward, resting his arms on his thighs, catching her gaze with his. “All right. We see each other when we can, when it’s convenient. No expectations, no late night calls, no drama. I’m free to see other women, and you’re free to see other men.”

“No.”

He straightened. “No? If that’s your answer, I’ll walk out now.”

Turning away, she worked to compose herself. She didn’t know why she even considered his demands, except for one thing. She felt the same about all of it, other than one point.

“I’m good with it all…” She hesitated.

“Except?”

“You don’t see other women, and I don’t see other men. It’s non-negotiable for me, Gage. I’m not looking for a relationship, either, but I’m also not looking to feel cheap or used.”

Gage stood, holding a hand toward her. “Skye—”

“Please, let me finish.” She turned away, gathering her thoughts. “I can live with seeing each other when it works for both of us. No drama, no commitment. Easy and infrequent.” She whipped back around, pinning him with a hard stare. “If you need to be with other women, I’m not the person for this kind of arrangement.”

He winced at the description and the terse tone. “What happens if one of us wants to start seeing someone else?”

“A simple phone call should work.” Her voice remained steady. She didn’t know why it hurt to say it out loud.

Gage walked up to her and placed his hands on her shoulders, his voice low and rough. “The last thing I want is to hurt you. You have to know I’m not a good bet. This could last a few nights or much longer. Either way, I don’t want anything permanent, and I want to walk away as friends.”

“I’m a big girl, Gage. I don’t want or need anything more than seeing each other whenever we have time. Is that fair?”

His nostrils flared. Studying her face, he saw no sign she didn’t believe her own words. Dropping his hands from her shoulders, he picked up his hat, settling it on his head.

Her brows drew together. “Are you leaving?”

“It’s best. You need to be sure it’s what you want. Truthfully, so do I.”

She didn’t like it, but knew he was right. “I leave tomorrow.”

“Change your flight to Sunday.” He smiled. “Please. I’d like to see you tomorrow, show you more of the city, take you downtown for dinner.” Stepping closer, he cupped her face in his hands, the kiss slow and warm. Groaning, he stepped away. “Change your flight, Skye.”

Darkness series, Katie Reus, Saved by Darkness

We’ve seen a couple of Katie Reus books and this one looks fantabulous, with lots of 5 Star reviews on Goodreads.  I gotta admit – I just love the idea of a demon/dragon hero!

Excerpt:

His brother flipped open a thin manila file on the desk and revealed an 8×10 glossy of…

Fiona.

Ian blinked once. Twice.

He stared at the picture, feeling his entire body heat up. It had been years since he’d seen her. He had a picture of Fiona, but it was from decades ago and it was in one of his safes—along with other treasures. That was not a myth about dragons—they loved treasure. Given her modern style of dress, this was taken fairly recently. “What is this?” His voice was always raspy, but even more so now.

Rory flicked a glance at Liberty before looking back at Ian. “This is what I wanted to talk to you about. Finn wants to speak to this female. She lives on the outskirts of his territory. Not in it, but close enough. And we needed to know if she is a trustworthy female. I know you know who she is, but I don’t know the nature of your relationship.” He stared at Ian questioningly.

Ian stood abruptly. He’d shared almost every part of his life and history with Rory. Fiona was the only thing he’d left out of that narrative. He simply couldn’t talk about her. It hurt too bad. Made his dragon want to take over, to burn everything and everyone to ash. “She’s trustworthy.” Without saying anything further he strode from the room. He heard his brother curse softly behind him, but ignored him.

Rory was lucky he hadn’t burned a hole in the ceiling and just flown out of there. Which yes, was insane, but Ian wasn’t in control now. He needed to get to the Stavros estate as soon as possible. The Alpha wolf who ran this territory wouldn’t be happy to see him since he didn’t plan to call first, but the male could just deal with it. Seeing Fiona’s picture again had his most primal nature clawing to the surface.

He couldn’t even convince himself that he’d buried memories of her because it was a lie. He thought of her every damn day. The woman lived inside him, was his mate. It didn’t matter that they’d never crossed that final line and mated. That he’d never marked her—that she was mated to another. Another female would never do for him. Now to know that she was somehow nearby, close to Finn’s territory… He was going to find out everything from the Alpha.

Then he was going to see her. He knew he shouldn’t. She was mated, taken. She’d broken his heart into a thousand shards and gone off with another male. Another male her family deemed worthy. Too late he realized she’d done it to protect him, that she’d sacrificed her own happiness to keep him alive. Or it had been an attempt to—but he didn’t need anyone’s protection. He would have kept them safe, alive. He just wished she’d known that, trusted him enough.

Now there was no logical reason to go to her. Still, he would see her. He had to.

A Ransom Canyon Romance

by Jodie Thomas

Blurb:

In the heart of Ransom Canyon, sometimes the right match for a lonely soul is the one you least expect.

Dan Brigman may not lead the most exciting life, but he’s proud of what he’s achieved: he’s a respected lawman, and he’s raised a bright, talented daughter on his own. But finding a lone, sparkly blue boot in the middle of a deserted highway gets him thinking maybe the cowgirl who lost it is exactly the shake-up he needs.

After losing her baby girl, Brandi Malone felt like her soul died along with her daughter. Now singing in small-town bars to make ends meet, she’s fine being a drifter—until a handsome sheriff makes her believe that parking her boots under his bed is a better option.

College grad Lauren Brigman has just struck out on her own in downtown Dallas when a troubling phone call leads her back home to Crossroads. Her hometown represents her family, friends and deepest hopes, but also her first love, Lucas Reyes. Will Lauren’s homecoming be another heartbreak, or a second chance for her and Lucas?

Excerpt:

“Brandi!” Hank, the owner, yelled. “Sheriff’s got something for you.”

The tall man in a tan uniform moved toward her, and for a moment she considered running. But he was between her and the door, and the guy’s face, framed in the shadows of his hat, looked like he operated strictly by the book.

She had no outstanding bills or fines or tickets. She hadn’t committed a crime. There was no reason the law wanted her, so the sheriff must have questions about the bar, or maybe her old van parked outside…

Brandi stood and waited as the sheriff neared. She was stronger than she’d been months ago. She didn’t have to run from questions.

When she’d first hit the road, she hated strangers asking where she was from or anything about her family. She didn’t want to talk about anything but her music. Nothing else mattered. Nothing else existed.

Only, when this stranger in a uniform raised his eyes to look up at her standing on the small stage, he smiled as if he was happy to see her. “Morning, ma’am,” he said.

She didn’t miss that the lawman’s eyes ran the length of her body before he reached her face. Could he have been checking her out? Surely not. Not if he called her ma’am.

“Morning,” she managed to say. “What’s the problem?”

“No problem.”

He smiled again, and she had the feeling that he was a man who didn’t smile often. Brandi relaxed slightly. He had honest blue eyes.

“This wouldn’t happen to be yours?” he asked as he lifted a boot. “It kind of looks like something you might wear.”

Brandi exploded. “Yes! Someone stole them out of my van two weeks ago. In their hurry, they dropped the left one in the parking lot.” She bounced down from the two-foot-high stage. “I loved those boots. I thought I’d lost this one forever, but I couldn’t bring myself to toss the other one away.”

The sheriff stood as stiff as a mannequin while she hugged him.

“Thank you. Thank you.” She reached for the boot.

He pulled it away. “Now wait a minute. I have to have proof.” He was smiling again, obviously enjoying himself. “Maybe you need to try it on. The slipper needs to fit. I think it’s the law, or maybe just a rule.”

She looked down at the tennis shoes she was wearing. “I have to have that boot. I own the match. One boot’s no good without its mate.”

“I’ll need to see the left one first before I hand this one over.”

“Follow me.” She shifted and straightened as if planning to march, playing along with his game.

Excerpt:

“Officer, do you have a minute?” Stephen turned toward Josh.

“Yes, of course. How can I help you?”

Josh got up from the desk and motioned for the police officer to follow him around the corner. Once they got out of earshot, Josh spoke. “Has Laney called you today?”

Officer Miller looked slightly perplexed. “Laney… You mean the nurse in the emergency department?”

Josh had to keep from rolling his eyes. “Yes.”

“No, I haven’t heard from her. Why?”

“Apparently, someone has been leaving her flowers and notes on her doorstep for a few days. She didn’t think anything of it and actually thought they were from me. I found the most recent one this morning when I was leaving. This one had two dead roses and the note was threatening.”

“So, you and Laney are an item.” Officer Miller seemed surprised. “What did the note say?”

Josh was grinning like a little schoolboy. The officer now knew he and Laney were an item. “It was juvenile. But it said, ‘Roses are red, violets are blue, and that other man can never be with you.’ ”

“It sounds to me like it is a threat more toward you and not her.”

“If it’s a threat toward me, why would that person leave them on her doorstep?”

“Perhaps so you will find them and stay away from her. Do you know what the other notes said?”

“Yeah.” Josh recited the poems.

“It sounds to me like this person knows Laney and, quite frankly, has a fascination with her. Does she have any idea who would be sending these?”

“She claims she has no idea. She says she hasn’t even dated anyone in several months and has never even brought a guy to the apartment she’s living in right now.”

“So that means this person has been following her.”

“That’s my feeling exactly.”

“Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot I can do about it. The guy hasn’t threatened any harm to her. What area does she live in?”

Of course he couldn’t help; this was a waste of Josh’s time. “She lives in the Sabre Springs area.”

“That’s out of my jurisdiction. She would need to file a report with San Diego Police Department. Then at least there would be a paper trail started if things continued to escalate. They can also increase surveillance in that area and maybe catch the person.”

“Do you have any contacts with San Diego PD we could talk to?”

“Actually, I do have a friend who would probably help her out. Call the department and ask for Ed Neal. He’s a detective. I don’t know the next day he’s working, but I’ll give him a call too so that he can have a heads up.”

“Thank you. I really appreciate it.” Maybe Stephen wasn’t so bad after all.

“No problem. I’d advise Laney to keep her doors and windows locked and try not to go out at night by herself.”

“Well, I told her not to go anywhere by herself. Who knows what this guy is capable of.”

“Does Laney live by herself or does she have a roommate?”

“She lives alone. I’m going to have her stay with me tonight.”

“That’s not a bad idea. Let me know if there’s anything else I can do to assist you. I’m sorry I can’t be more help.”

“No, I really appreciate your advice. We’ll definitely call your friend in the department.”

“Sounds good.” Stephen began to walk away and then turned back. “Take care of her. You’ve got a good one.” He smiled at Josh.

“Don’t I know it,” Josh mumbled as he turned to go round on his other patients.

Excerpt:

Sarah hopped off the couch, fists clenched. “Are you out of your freakin’ mind? I’m not doing this. I’m going to Sea Ranch or Morro Bay or Santa Barbara…somewhere with a beach.”

“But this is a great opportunity, Sarah. The judges are enologists and wine and food raters from the big magazines. Even if we don’t win, we can get our talents in front of people who can make things happen for us.”

“We? I don’t want to be a chef. I’m a planner. A damn good one.”

He swiped his fingers over his hair. “You hate the politics. You know you’re a gourmet cook. This is a great chance for you as well as me.”

She planted her hands on her hips and glared. “No. No. No.”

“Why are you being like this?”

She raised her voice. “We’re not a couple. You said this is for couples. To me that means married or engaged. Now eat your cobbler, and I’ll go in the kitchen and make coffee.”

“How can you say that? We’ve been a couple since we were kids. Our friendship is probably stronger than most marriages.”

“But this implies a committed relationship. It would be dishonest.” She stood her ground, but he had a point. If it didn’t specifically say engaged or married, they’d technically qualify.

He hung his head and looked up at her through those lashes most women would kill for. “Uh, Sarah? I already signed us up.”

“What?” she shrieked. “Sam, I can’t believe you did this. I could just…just…this is exactly what you do, every time. Take over and do what you want, and don’t even bother to think about the person you‘re going to rope into your latest scheme. No.”

“It’s only a week. You can have the second week all to yourself.” He got up and stood in front of her, so close she had to look up at him. “Can’t you pretend that we’re more than friends for a week? I know you love me.”

“Yes…like a brother…a big, overgrown, aggravating, controlling, nuisance of a brother.”

“But you’ll do it.”

“No.” She looked up at him and knew instantly why women fell at his feet. His shoulders were immense, and the light stubble on his face made him look dangerous. But the heat in his eyes could melt rocks in an iceberg.

He put his hands on her shoulders and pulled her toward him. It was a brotherly hug, one they’d shared often. “Think about it. I’ve paid the fee, but I can stand to lose it.”

“How much was it?” She murmured against his chest.

“Two grand.”

Two thousand dollars? She pushed him away and faced the kitchen.

Review:

I’m gonna have to admit that I really didn’t get into this book very much until about half way through.  I actually started to change my post from a review to just an excerpt but I decided to set it down for a bit and try again.  And I’m glad I did.

I like the friendship between Sarah and Sam.  They seem to complement each other pretty well (although it does seem a little like she just rolls over for whatever he wants, but as long as she’s happy doing it …. )  Of course, he may have pushed her too far with his latest stunt – asking her to pretend to be a couple for a wine competition.  But even worse when he kinda insults her by saying no one would ever think she’d be someone he’d go for.  He had to know that wasn’t going to go over well as soon as he said it!

Of course it doesn’t, which leads t a make-over for her and the obligatory requirement that he sees her in a new way.  It’s a little cliched but that doesn’t mean it isn’t enjoyable.  There’s a lot of time spent with them misunderstanding the changes in their feelings (which is one of the reasons I put it aside) but I can see where it would be hard to suddenly start thinking of your best friend romantically.  But things definitely heat up, in more than one way, when they finally start thinking in those terms.

There’s a lot of back and forth on their friendship before they even get to that point.  And then there are a couple of misunderstandings that have to be worked out.  And they’ve definitely got to work out their dynamic as a couple because it isn’t good for him to run wild and just expect her to come along for the ride.  It’s a good journey though as they work their way from friends to lovers to a HEA ending … with a few bumps in the way for fun!

(This is the first in this series that I’ve read but I’m not sure it really made much of a difference.  The story seemed complete to me, so I’m gonna go with no  🙂 )

Excerpt:

“You can be such a bitch, Morgan,” Chrystal spat before trailing after her sister.

Meh. She’d been called worse. And two ducks in a bucket, fuck it. That had felt good.

Turning around, Morgan headed back for the ballroom. Funny. She no longer needed that fresh air—

“Oof.”

She slammed into a wall, quickly shooting her hands up to prevent a face-plant into plaster. “Son of a—” she grumbled, but the gentle but firm grasp of fingers circling her upper arms and steadying her cut off the complaint. O-kay. Maybe not a wall. She blinked. Not unless the hotel’s décor included stark white dress shirts and black tuxedo jackets.

Slowly, she lifted her head. Black bowtie. Taut golden skin stretched over a strong neck. A clean-shaven jaw and chin that could’ve been carved out of granite. A shockingly carnal but stern mouth with a slightly fuller bottom lip that appeared as if a woman had just been nipping at it only moments earlier. A straight, arrogant slash of nose and equally patrician, sculpted cheekbones.

And… Oh God.

A pair of stunning, silvery-grey, thickly lashed eyes. Luminescent. The flowery word popped into her head, and though it seemed ridiculous to attach such purple prose to this man with his face of honed edges, cutting angles, almost harsh sensuality, she couldn’t banish it.

Crazy how a lovely, grey gaze glinting with…with…

Disgust?

Icy contempt dispelled any lingering warmth inside her with an arctic blast.

Well, damn, all she’d done was bump into him. But he stared at her as if she were a flea-bitten stray that had strutted up to him and pissed on his tuxedo pants leg.

“Excuse me,” she apologized, stepping back and out of his hold. “I wasn’t paying attention.”

“It’s fine.” His hands fell away from her as if he couldn’t abide one more moment touching her. Still…she fought not to close her eyes. God, she could roll around in that voice like bikini-clad strippers in a batch of fresh mud. Just coat herself in it. Even the concise, clipped tone couldn’t tarnish the deep, dark timbre. “You were…preoccupied,” he added, the same disdain that hardened his stare coloring his words. His flinty gaze flicked over her shoulder in the direction the Terrible Twosome had disappeared before resting on her again.

The last part of her conversation drifted back to her. “…this city is full of CEOs and millionaires. Where there’s one, there’s another, and most are ready and willing to get laid.” She smothered a cringe. Damn. That had probably sounded awful. Can you say “gold digger”?

Usually, she wouldn’t have cared about explaining herself, but for some reason, she wanted to melt the ice in those silver eyes. That same elusive logic had her longing to see a smile curving those sensual lips.

“I think you may have misconstrued what you might’ve overheard…”

A dark eyebrow arched high. “I doubt it.”

Surprise at the abrupt interruption winged through her. What the hell… Irritation—no anger—surged hot and heavy inside her. Whether it was at him for his arrogant contempt or at herself for giving a damn about his opinion of her, she couldn’t say. Yeah, she could. Screw him and the high horse he rode in on. He didn’t know her… No one knew her.

She grinned, and at the same time, treated him to a cool, withering gaze that she’d learned to perfect right along with her knowledge of which dinner fork to use.

“Oh good.” She sighed. “For a second there, I was afraid you might believe I was only after a man’s money.” She chuckled, shaking her head. “When the truth is I want his money and ovary-exploding orgasms. Those two together are so hard to find, you know what I mean?”

Patting his shoulder, she stepped to the side and continued toward the ballroom.

Prick.

a-millionaire-at-midnight-teaser-1

Review:

Morgan is just a big ball of sass and fun.  She uses it mostly as a shield but once she sees how much of a rise she can get out of Alex then all bets are off!  She just amuses me to no end and I really want to become friends with her – smart, mouthy (but not mean), and just full of pop culture knowledge, I think we could hang for sure.

While he doesn’t have the best first impression of Morgan, and every meeting since has had her getting under his skin, Alex can’t deny that she’s as intelligent as she is sexy … and snarky.  But his emotional scars go real deep and he’s not willing to open himself up to pain.  He’s much safer if things stay business only and he keeps to himself.

But spending time together, pretending to be engaged, quickly has things heating up and Simone sure knows how to bring the spice!  And even better, they are just as compatible outside the bedroom as in.  They understand each other and they help fill in some of those pieces that the other needs.  Morgan brings some lightness that Alex’s life doesn’t have enough of and he helps her get her mojo back again.   Of course with these two hesitant to trust again someone is going to be running for the door sooner rather than later.  It’s handled really well though and there isn’t a whole lot of angst getting us to that point and back around to the HEA that you know they both deserve.

This could have so easily been a story about a couple of rich, hot, beautiful, people who were all “poor little me, no one loves me”.  But it SO wasn’t.  Simone does such a wonderful job making these characters complex and full of hurts & fears.  Both of them have been let down by people who were supposed to love and understand them (in Alex’s case, it’s been going on for years), so neither is all that anxious to give someone else a chance to hurt them again.  But of course the heart isn’t always good about following the plan  🙂

Excerpt:

“I’ve got a patient for you, so I thought I’d pop over to see if you have an opening today,” Doc Sanders said.

Emerson thought of her schedule, complete with the tumbleweeds blowing through its wide- open spaces, and bit back the urge to laugh with both excitement and irony. “I’m sure I can fit someone in. What’s the injury?”

“Rotator cuff. X-rays and MRI are complete, and Dr. Norris, the orthopedist in Camden Valley, ordered PT. But the patient is local, so I figured if you could take him, it’d be a win-win.”

“Of course.” An odd sensation plucked up Emerson’s spine at the long-buried memory of a blue-eyed high school boy with his arm in a sling and a smile that could melt her like butter in a cast-iron skillet. “Um, my schedule is pretty flexible. What time did he want to come in?”

“Actually, he’s a little anxious to get started, so he came directly here from the ortho’s office . . .”

Doc Sanders turned toward the hallway leading to her waiting room, where a figure had appeared in the doorframe. Emerson blinked, trying to get her brain to reconcile the free-flowing confusion between the boy in her memory and the man standing in front of her. The gray-blue eyes were the same, although a tiny bit more weathered around the edges, and weirdly, the sling was also a match. But the person staring back at her was a man, with rough edges and sex appeal for days, full of hard angles and harder muscles under his jeans and T-shirt . . .

Hunter Cross.

Emerson stood with her feet anchored to the linoleum, unable to move or speak or even breathe. For the smallest scrap of a second, she tumbled back in time, her heart pounding so hard beneath her crisp white button-down that surely the traitorous thing would jump right out of her chest.

A blanket of stars littering the August sky . . . the warm weight of Hunter’s varsity jacket wrapped around her shoulders . . . the warmer fit of his mouth on hers as the breeze carried his whispers, full of hope . . . “Don’t go to New York. Stay with me, Em. Marry me and stay here in Millhaven where we’ll always have this, just you and me . . .”

“Emerson? What . . . what the hell are you doing here?”

The deeper, definitely more rugged-around-the-edges version of his voice tipped the scales of her realization all the way into the present. She needed to say something, she knew, she knew, but her mouth had gone so dry that she’d have better luck rocketing to the moon in a paper airplane right now.

“I work here,” Emerson finally managed, the truth of the words—of what they meant—delivering her back to reality with a hard snap. She hadn’t returned to Millhaven for a jaunt down memory lane. Hell, she’d only come back when her process of elimination had dead-ended in total despair. She was here for one thing, and one thing only. To bury herself in as much work as her body would allow.

Even if her first client probably hated her guts.

(The setup is that heroine Emerson has just come back to her hometown of Millhaven after twelve years and is working as a physical therapist)

When she’s not sitting cross-legged in an ancient desk chair known as “The Pleather Bomber”, she can be found practicing obscene amounts of yoga, whipping up anything from enchiladas to éclairs in her kitchen, or curled up with her nose in a book. Kimberly is a USA Today best-selling author and 2016 and 2015 RWA RITA finalist who lives (and writes!) by the mantra that food is love. She resides in Virginia with her wildly patient husband and their three daughters.

The Seduction Series

by Jess Dee

Blurb:

He has a plan she can’t refuse

Daniel Tanner’s been in love with Amy since they were teenagers. If she would only give him a chance to show her how good they could be together, he could convince her the fiery attraction between them won’t burn up and ruin their friendship.

Amy Morgan’s had a front row seat to the parade of women coming in and out of Daniel’s life for years, so she’s not interested in risking what they have for something that would eventually end with her heart being broken by her best friend. And life has taught her broken hearts is the way love always ends.

But no one knows Amy better than Daniel, and he’s devised a plan to show her they can have it all.

Excerpt:

She turned around and stared out at the ocean. “I…that is, last night should never have happened. It was wrong.”

“It didn’t seem wrong at the time.” Nothing in his life had ever felt more right.

“Maybe so. But in the cold light of day, things look a lot different.”

“You don’t. You look every bit as beautiful as you did last night.” He needed to disarm her, charm her, and combat any argument she might make, no matter how logical.

“I was talking about…us.”

“You think if I kissed you now, it would be any different? Any less explosive? You think nothing else would happen?”

“That’s exactly what I think. We both have our senses about us now. Things are normal again.”

Their normal had changed, and he couldn’t wait to prove it to her. “Come here.” He kept his voice low. “Let’s find out exactly how things are in the cold light of day.”

She squirmed and folded her arms in front of her chest, but not before he noticed her breasts straining against the tight T-shirt. Her nipples jutted out, clearly outlined beneath the stretchy fabric. “We don’t need to find out anything. I’m telling you things are different. Last night, I got caught up in the moment and let it go too far. I’m sorry, it was my mistake.”

He moved closer to her. “You think we won’t get caught up in the moment right here?” He traced her lips with his finger.

“You think if I kissed you now, you wouldn’t feel that excitement again?”

Her mouth opened at his touch.

He ran his finger ever so lightly between her lips before slipping it into her warm, wet mouth, and then out again, mimicking his actions from the night before.

“I…uh, no.” She stared at him with glazed eyes, the rise and fall of her chest uneven.

She was lying. He could see it in her liquid green gaze. If she looked at him with those bedroom eyes for another second, so help him, he would disprove her theory. Convincingly.

He ran his finger along her lips again. “Amy,” he murmured. “Would you like me to kiss you?”

“Yes,” she whispered.

“Would you like me to touch you like I did last night?”

“Yes.” It was a soft moan.

His mouth close to her ear, he murmured, “If I touch you, will you come for me again?”

“God, yes.”

Without warning, her head snapped up. He heard a crack as her skull hit his.

She swore as she massaged her forehead. His own head throbbed.

“Ouch!” She glared at him. “Damn it, now look what you made me do.” She looked at her hand, as if checking for blood, then punched his arm. “This is exactly what I don’t want to get into with you.” Her voice gathered strength, and she hit him again. “I don’t want to get involved with you physically. Can you please just understand that?”

Author Info:

An avid romance reader since her early teens, Jess knew one day, when she grew up, she’d have to write her own love stories. And she did. Although the first one was pretty awful.

But once she discovered it was okay to leave the bedroom door open in her romance novels, she decided to leave everything open. Buttons, zips, pants, number of lovers…Which is why her books are all steamy erotic romances. Jess’s first published story was originally contracted in 2005. Since then, she’s completed over 30 books, and is finally doing the work she loves most—writing romance.

While Jess lived most of her life in South Africa, the last fourteen years have been spent in Australia. From the fast-paced Sydney lifestyle to the laid-back islands and beaches, there’s always another gorgeous Aussie setting for a contemporary romance.
