Excerpt:

Tinleyโ€™s ears perk up at the sound of his voice; itโ€™s super low and incredibly sexy. She feels along the table for her glass of wine and takes a large gulp of liquid courage before responding. โ€œThatโ€™s okay, Iโ€™ve always been a fan of rule-breakers. Some rules were just meant to be broken. For now, Iโ€™ll just call you Mystery Date Number Four.โ€

A husky chuckle floats across the table, and she canโ€™t help but be instantly attracted. She canโ€™t see his face, but with a voice like that, it doesnโ€™t even matter what he looks like. โ€œIs that because Iโ€™m your fourth date or are you ranking us? Whatโ€™s my competition look like?โ€

All thoughts of being ladylike go out the window as Tinley lets out a full-blown belly laugh. If this guy only knew. โ€œIf by ranking, you mean which date was the worst, itโ€™s hard to tell at this point.โ€

โ€œIs that so? I had some pretty bad ones myself.โ€

She laughs internally at the disastrous dates sheโ€™s had so far. Thereโ€™s no way he can compete. โ€œI donโ€™t know, my dates were pretty awful. I donโ€™t think you can top them.โ€

โ€œYou want to bet?โ€

โ€œOh, weโ€™re making bets now? I guess our relationship just cranked up a notch. Instead of it just being a blind date, weโ€™re now at the blind acquaintance level.โ€

Sheโ€™s not sure where this level of confidence came from, but sheโ€™s liking how easily the conversation is flowing with this guy. Itโ€™s completely effortless and sheโ€™s just comfortable. Itโ€™s never been this way with anyone before.

โ€œIs that a thing?โ€

โ€œIt is now.โ€ She finds herself nodding along as she answers until she remembers he canโ€™t actually see her.

Book Review, Catherine Bybee, Not Quite Crazy, Not Quite series

While this isn’t my first of her books (LOVE theย Weekday Brides and Most Likely To series), it is my first in the Not Quite series.ย  And I couldn’t tell you why!ย  I love everything I’ve read by her andย Not Quite Crazyย is no different ๐Ÿ™‚

Not Quite Crazy

Not Quite series

by Catherine Bybee

Release Date: March 6, 2018

Publisher: Montlake Romance

Blurb:

No one drives in New York City. Everyone knows that, including California transplant Rachel Price. But that doesnโ€™t stop her from driving into the city. From Connecticut. Every single morning. Rain or shineโ€ฆor snow.

When she runs the charismatic and good-looking Jason Fairchild off the road, their immediate spark is met with bad timing. There is also one tiny little detail: Jason is her boss. And a woman as intelligent and dedicated to her career as Rachel knows not to date her boss.

As CEO of a private jet company, Jason Fairchild is more used to flying than driving. But if he hadnโ€™t chosen to drive home one night, he wouldnโ€™t have met the slowestโ€”and most irresistibleโ€”driver in the entire metro area. Jason has never had time for love. Or dating. Or really anything that doesnโ€™t involve work. But when he finds out that Rachel is the newest superstar in his marketing department, he canโ€™t help wondering if fate has other plansโ€ฆ

*****

Message From the Author

Inย Not Quite Crazy, California transplant, Rachel Price, doesnโ€™t understand the ramifications of driving into Manhattan from Connecticut every day; in every type of weatherโ€ฆespecially snow. When she runs the charming Jason Fairchild off the road, sparks fly. Too bad Jason is her new boss and dating him is out of the question. Everyone knows itโ€™s occupational suicide to date your boss.

Determined to keep her distance romantically, the two dive into a friendship. It isnโ€™t long before those sparks ignite and neither one of them can deny their attraction. Throw in a teenage ward that Rachel has taken on after the death of her best friend, and biological grandparents that seek custody; and this heart warming love story is bound to whisk you away.

While I was writingย Not Quite Crazyย I took an impromptu trip to Manhattan last March. I purposely chose a winter month where I might be able to absorb what it felt like to be in the city when snow covered the ground. That might sound silly for those of you who live in the city, but for me, a woman who has lived in Southern California since she was eighteen years old, I had no idea just how snow impacts day to day life.

On the drive in from the airport, I was immediately struck by the bikes chained to posts and buried by snow. I observed a man digging his car out and effectively covering his neighborโ€™s car in the process. The plows did a great job of clearing the path for those cars actually moving, but did an equally fantastic job of making sure some vehicles couldnโ€™t move for days. Trash piled up on the sidewalks would have to wait to be picked up until the thaw. It was astonishing to see. But the best experience for me, and one that made it into the pages ofย Not Quite Crazy, came when I took my first ride on the subway. You see, I was on my way uptown, from downtown to meet with my agent. Keep in mind, Manhattan is only five miles long. But it was St. Patrickโ€™s Day and I completely forgot about the parade. I ordered an Uber, as one does, and sat bumper to bumper for nearly two hours. After arriving extremely late to my lunch, my wise and savvy agent gave me the instructions I needed to ride the subway back to my downtown hotel. Iโ€™m a grown woman, riding a subway shouldnโ€™t intimidate meโ€ฆ but if I were honest, it did. So, with my purse strapped to my shoulder and zipped on the inside of my jacket, and my eyes wide open, I crowded into the underground train along with just about everyone else in the city.ย ย Street performers jumped onto the car and started singing for change. Tourists chatted enthusiastically while locals looked bored with the whole process.

Rachel, my heroine inย Not Quite Crazyย is an extension of everyone I know that has lived in California. Here on the west coast we all have cars. Weโ€™re in them all the time. Public transportation is a joke when the distance between downtown LA and Orange County is so far away. The concept of always relying on public transportation to get to work every single day isnโ€™t something most Southern Californianโ€™s do. So when Rachel showed up on the page, I made sure she personified my own stubbornness about independently driving to and from wherever she needed to go. Even if it takes her two hours more than it should.

I hope you all enjoy this final chapter in the Not Quite Series and find room on your keeper shelf forย Not Quite Crazy.

Cheers,

Catherine

*****

Excerpt:

Rachel found the stack of mail on the dining room table. She fingered through a few bills and tossed the junk to the side to add to the recycle bin. The box Owen had spoken of didnโ€™t have a mailing label. In fact, all that was written on the plain brown box was her name, her first name.

She peeled away the tape, not knowing what to expect. Once she folded the lid back, she saw a handwritten envelope on top of a white canvas bag. It took a little effort to lift the noisy bag from the boxโ€”the sound of metal hitting metal struck her as odd.

Chains.

Chains for the tires on her car.

โ€œWhoโ€ฆ?โ€

She opened the note and a second paper fell out.

Rachel

Thank you for braving this stranger in a storm and keeping me from frostbite.
Welcome to Connecticut.

Jason

Below his name was a phone number

Something inside her stomach flipped, the buzz a teenage girl feels when she notices a popular boy watching her from the other side of the classroom. Or maybe she was reading into it. Maybe this was just a thank-you, a friendly gesture from a grateful, stranded traveler.

Her cheeks warmed.

Assuming he gave her a mobile number, Rachel decided to send a text.

Hello Jason. I received your gift. They were incredibly thoughtful. Thank you.

She read her note over, twice, then pressed โ€œSend.โ€ Off it went, in wherever notes went as they traveled faster than Superman in cyberspace.

The phone in her hand buzzed, reminding her she was holding it.

Is this Rachel?

She grinned.

Do you leave gifts on everyoneโ€™s doorstep in town?

Dot. Dot. Dot. It is nearly Christmas.

Was he flirting? It had been some time since sheโ€™d sent a text to anyone outside of the friend zone, so she couldnโ€™t tell.

So you double as Connecticutโ€™s Santa Claus?

Shhh. Donโ€™t tell anyone. Itโ€™s a secret.

Well, he wasnโ€™tย notย flirting.

Iโ€™ll keep my mouth closed on one condition.

Oh? Whatโ€™s that?

I want to meet Vixen. Sheโ€™s always been my favorite.

I thought Vixen was a he.

She giggled.

A boy named Vixen. Thatโ€™s just cruel.

Good point. Iโ€™ll see what I can do. The team is on a strict curfew until after the
holiday.

Rachel found a rolling eye emoji.

Review:

As she’s shown time and again, Bybee is a wonder at creating characters you connect with.ย  Rachel is kind, responsible, and strong.ย  She struggles when she finds out that the hottie she helped is her boss, but Jason proves pretty hard to resist.ย  Because, for being a billionaire CEO, Jason is down-to-earth, caring, and dependable … he’s also pretty set on getting what he wants.ย  (I’m pretty sure their courtship is one of the sweetest things I’ve read in a long time!)

I also fell for their assorted friends & family.ย  They are all friendly, kind, and willing to pitch in to do what needs to be done.ย  While there is drama, some that you see coming and some that is unexpected (but none of it causing strife in the actual romance which I appreciate), it’s never over the top.ย  Instead the struggle just helps to deepen their assorted connections and intensify an already emotional story.

As much about friends and family as it is a love story,ย Not Quite Crazy continues Bybee’s streak of delivering must-read stories full of love in a multitude of forms.

Black and Blue

by Cynthia Rayne

Genre: Romance

Release: March 12, 2018

Blurb:

Life can leave you bruised

Deputy U.S. Marshal Annie Foster accidentally got her partner killed during a routine prisoner transport. Now three dangerous felons are roaming the Kentucky countryside, and itโ€™s all her fault. Review:

Annie is dealing with a lot of guilt over how her last assignment ended.ย  She’s put her life on hold and is doing anything she can to bring the fugitives to justice.ย  It’s made her hyper-focused, stubborn, and a bit angry.ย  When she crosses paths with West, he gives her the opportunity she needs to see things through … and maybe find something more.

West has dealt a lot of guilt of his own and recognizes a lot of himself in Annie.ย  He also finds himself admiring her determination and spunk.ย  Time spent together chasing down leads gives their attraction time to build, quickly becoming something they can’t ignore.ย  And as the danger ramps up so do their feelings.

As the first book in a new series,ย Black and Blueย had to spend some time setting up all of the characters and how they relate to one another in Black Star Security.ย  I enjoyed all of them and they way they relate to one another.ย  There’s also some hints to at least a couple upcoming stories which is fun to consider.ย  Unfortunately, though, it also means that there is some time spent away from the main couple that lends their story to being a little short-changed in a couple of spots.ย  It’s common enough in first stories but I think Rayne minimizes it as much as she can.

I enjoyed how West tries to help Annie recognize her feelings and deal with them.ย  It’s a nice bonding moment between the two and helps both of them come to come to terms with their past.ย  The danger element is also very well done.ย  I found myself curious about how they would track down the bad guys and the last half definitely has some great edge of your seat moments.

A story with characters I want to see more of and an adventure that kept me engaged,ย Black and Blueย is a satisfying introduction to a new author for me and I’m looking forward to seeing what Rayne brings us next.

Kellyโ€™s back.

How can two simple words make Dylan Bronstadโ€™s heart ache and sing at the same time?

Even seven years ago, Kelly Anne Leeson had possessed that power. Back then, all Dylan wanted to do was drink and make love to her. Really, it was no wonder sheโ€™d climbed out of his bed and walked out of his life, leaving him with nothing but a nasty hangover and the lonely memories of their time together.

Today, Dylanโ€™s life is on track. Heโ€™s sober with the support of his family and his tight-knit group of friends. But Kelly could derail all heโ€™s worked to accomplish. Unfortunately, he canโ€™t seem to stay away from her.

Lured by the offer of her dream job, Kelly returns home to Crawford Falls and the friends sheโ€™d abandoned a lifetime ago. Mending those broken relationships will require some honest answers and a fair amount of forgiveness.

But facing Dylan will take a lot moreโ€”like maybe a suit of armor to protect her battle-weary heart and the secret she fears sheโ€™ll never be able to keep.

While Kelly searches for a way to maintain the safe life sheโ€™s created for her son, Dylan works to remind her of the relationship they once had.

Just as they rekindle their relationship, secrets and half-truths threaten to destroy everything.

Excerpt:

โ€œIsnโ€™t that your turn?โ€ she asked, huffing embarrassingly loud when they passed the county road and made their way up a fairly steep incline.

โ€œIโ€™m running you home.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t need to. Iโ€™m a big girl, you know?โ€ Kelly could feel his lazy perusal from her head down to her toes and back again. She was sweaty and gross, and he was checking her out. Unbelievable.

โ€œMmm. Yes, I know,โ€ he said.

They ran in silence the rest of the way, because it was just too damn hard for her to talk. And he knew it. When they reached the top of the hill and turned onto her street, he said, โ€œLetโ€™s cool down.โ€ They slowed their pace to a casual walk. โ€œI never get to run with anyone. That was nice.โ€

โ€œBut you cut your run short for me. And itโ€™s obvious, youโ€™re in far better shape than I am, given that you can actually talk and run at the same time.โ€

Dylan just laughed at her comment, clasping his hand with hers, lacing their fingers together. โ€œGo out with me, Kelly Anne. Iโ€™ve missed you, and I really want to get to know you again.โ€

The feel of his hand in hers and that sweet invitation sent a familiar surge of excitement through her. Kellyโ€™s heart squeezed and her stomach did that little flip-flop rollercoaster thing again. As always, her body seemed to respond so naturally to Dylanโ€™s attention. Or perhaps foolishly was a more appropriate definition of her response. While he apparently had warm memories of their time together, to her their relationship had been like watching an incredible firework displayโ€”spectacular, bright, loudโ€”and then sheโ€™d been plunged into a dark, silent night all alone.

Kelly came to a stop near the side of her momโ€™s house and turned to face him, sucking in a deep breath and trying to ignore the nice hum of arousal playing through her body. โ€œJesseโ€™s your best friend, right?โ€ She didnโ€™t wait, because she knew the answer. โ€œDo you hold his hand like this when the two of you are together?โ€ Classic Dylan reaction. He burst into laughter and then released her hand to give her a brief hug. When he stepped back, he wore that expression that generally got him exactly what he wanted. Kelly sighed and shook her head. โ€œNo, Dylan. Iโ€™m not interested in dating.โ€

Dylan moved in closer, tilting her chin up with one finger so sheโ€™d be forced to meet his eyes. Why did he insist on touching her like that? It did crazy things to her brain, not to mention the fact that it all but melted her resolve. โ€œYouโ€™re kidding me. Come on, Kelly Anne. We were great together. Why not try it again?โ€

Because I know my heart will never survive.

Undone By You

The Chicago Rebels Series

by Kate Meader

On sale March 5, 2018

ISBN: 9781501182907

Pocket Star

eBook

Blurb:

Dante Moretti has just landed his dream job: GM of the Chicago Rebels. And screw the haters who think there should be an asterisk next to his name because heโ€™s the first out managing executive in pro hockey. Heโ€™s earned the right to be here and nothing will topple him off that perchโ€”especially not an incredibly inconvenient attraction to his star defenseman, Cade โ€œAlamoโ€ Burnett. Cade has always been careful to keep his own desires on the down low, but his hot Italian boss proves to be a temptation he canโ€™t resist. Sure, they both have so much to lose, but no one will ever know…

As Dante and Cadeโ€™s taboo affair heats up off the ice and their relationship gets more and more intense, theyโ€™ll have to decide: is love worth risking their careers? Or is this romance destined to be forever benched?

*****

Review:

(While this one can stand on its own, it does run parallel toย So Over You, which adds a little extra fun for returning readers.ย  The few references to the previous book make more sense if you’ve read it, but I don’t think that they will matter much to newbies or impact their reading pleasure.)

I couldn’t be happier with the story-line Meader gave these two!ย  Cade is a big ball of awesome fun but it’s obvious there is more to him than what he wants people to see.ย  And I have been so curious about Dante since he first showed up – all suave and debonair.ย  They may seem like an unlikely pair but the tension between them hints at something more.

Dante has worked hard to get where he is in the NHL – the first openly gay GM of a professional hockey team.ย  Running into one of his star players in a gay club, and being propositioned by said player, is definitely not good for his professional goals … regardless of how unbelievably sexy he finds Cade.ย  Unfortunately there’s something about him that Dante just can’t ignore.

Cade is this appealing mix of brash confidence and uncertainty.ย  He’s young and seems to have the world at his feet, but he’s hiding a pretty big secret.ย  So far he’s been successful at keeping his love-life private but an instantaneous and overwhelming attraction to his new GM complicates things immensely.ย  He may not have thought he was ready to make some tough decisions but life seems to have other plans.

Meader does such a fantastic job of balancing Dante’s gay yogi with growth moments.ย  While he is older and has had more time being publicly gay, it doesn’t mean that he has the answer for everything.ย  Instead, there’s this fantastic give and take between the two as Cade faces life choices (and they are big ones!) which has Dante evaluating his past and his future.

Cade and Dante might think that they can play with fire and not get burned but we know better ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Instead, the more time they spend together and the deeper their feelings grow, the more complications they’ll have to overcome.ย ย Steamy and sweet, with fabulous characters and heartfelt emotions,ย Undone By Youย beautifully highlights that just because you don’t want your heart to get involved doesn’t mean that it won’t.

After losing her boyfriend and her father, Finlay moves back to her hometown to be closer to the little family she has left. She needs her temporary job at Whiskey Broโ€™s to get her catering business off the ground, and sheโ€™s determined not to let the gruff, arrogant mountain of a man Bullet Whiskey scare her off.

Finlay is everything Bullet has never wanted. Sheโ€™s afraid of his dog, afraid of motorcycles, and sweet enough to give him cavities, but as she weaves her way into the hearts of everyone around him, heโ€™s powerless to resist her charms. Passion ignites, but trust doesnโ€™t come easily, and when their pasts collide, Bullet finds out the true meaning of protecting those he loves.

Excerpt:

FINLAY SMILED AND waved as she slipped into the dingy bar. โ€œHi. Am I interrupting?โ€ From the scowl on Bulletโ€™s face, she was not only interrupting, but sheโ€™d somehow pissed him off. Well, good for him. Let him be angry, the big, tattooed bully. What kind of man comes up to a woman at a wedding and says, Hey, sweetheart, whaddaya say I take you for a ride on the Bullet train?

She smoothed her sundress over her hips, trying to gather her wits about her. Bullet train. She had no doubt he had a train in his pants. The man was larger than life in too many ways to count, and when he set those cold, dark eyes on her, she swore they ignited right in front of her. Lordy, now my pulse is racing. Sheโ€™d been thinking of that flash of heat ever since the wedding, and she couldnโ€™t deny that it scared her and turned her on in equally frustrating measures. If she were honest with herself, sheโ€™d thought she was too damaged after losing Aaron to ever feel this type of spine-tingling excitement over a man againโ€”and the fact that she felt it around a guy like Bullet scared the heck out of her. But this was not the time for honesty. She needed to pull herself together so she didnโ€™t make a bad impression.

Dixie pushed past her massive brother to greet her. โ€œNot at all! Iโ€™m glad you made it in.โ€ She gave Finlay a quick hug and then glared at Bullet. โ€œRight, Bull? Arenโ€™t we glad she made it in?โ€

He lifted his chin in a half-cocked greeting before stalking around the bar and busying himself pulling bottles from shelves. Was he upset that sheโ€™d refused his magical penis ride? If so, he was going to have to get over it, and fast.

โ€œDonโ€™t pay attention to him. He had a rough night.โ€ Dixie waved a hand as if Bullet didnโ€™t matter.

Finlay forced a smile, knowing the big oaf mattered a heck of a lot. Sheโ€™d grown up in Peaceful Harbor, although she was several years younger than the Whiskeys and she hadnโ€™t known them then. Sheโ€™d moved back into town two months ago, hoping to put down roots near her sister, Penny, after leaving to attend college in Boston nearly a decade ago. Penny had filled her in on the Whiskeys when sheโ€™d accepted the catering job for their friendsโ€™ wedding. Apparently, the Whiskeys and their motorcycle gang owned her small hometown. Only, according to Penny, it wasnโ€™t like the stories sheโ€™d heard about bikers causing a ruckus or scaring people. No, the Whiskeys were known to be good folks, and apparently their gang was more of a club. She didnโ€™t know the difference, but understood that they protected the community, keeping crime down and helping with bulliesโ€”except, apparently, for their own big, pushy son. From what Penny had said, they might look intimidating, but beneath all those tattoos and dark leather, they were kind, caring, generous people. Sheโ€™d noticed that at the wedding, and in the weeks since, as sheโ€™d seen Dixie, her other brothers, and their parents around town. They were all as nice as could be. The jury was still out on big, bad Bullet.

But if she was going to spend any amount of time in his presence, he needed to respect her. This was why Penny had pushed her to take this job, wasnโ€™t it? Because sheโ€™d been hiding behind her past, living a safe, comfortable, lonelylife for so long sheโ€™d all but forgotten how it felt to be hit on? And how to handle it. Well, that ended now. She straightened her spine, the way sheโ€™d learned to do in culinary school, when top chefs came in to teach and theyโ€™d ream the students for the smallest errors. There was no room for thin skin in cateringโ€”and sheโ€™d be darned if sheโ€™d let Bullet Whiskey intimidate her one bit.

โ€œItโ€™ll be fine,โ€ she assured Dixie, and walked directly behind the bar to the mountain of a man who was trying his best to ignore her. Every step made her heart beat faster. Holy moly, she hadnโ€™t remembered him being that tall. She was only five three, but even though she had heels on, he was well over a foot taller than her.

She reached up and tapped Bulletโ€™s shoulder. It was like tapping stone covered with a black leather vest. He turned slowly, his broad chest and massive arms suddenly taking up all the extra space. She stared up at him. His dark beard and eyes gave him a menacing look. She swallowed hard, steeling herself to say her piece. In the next second those angry eyes turned even hotter and hungrier than theyโ€™d been at the wedding.

Her traitorous insides flamed.

Oh boy. She was in way over her head. This man probably got everything he wanted from women with that look. He cast some sort of spell with his leather wrist cuffs, scary-looking silver and black rings, and go-ahead-just-try-to-mess-with-me attitude.

Forcing her sternest expression, she said, โ€œBullet, if weโ€™re going to work together, I expect youโ€™ll let what happened at the wedding go and get behind me on this project.โ€

He cocked his head, his lips curving up in a wicked smile that brought goose bumps to her entire body as he said, โ€œIโ€™m happy to get behind you anytime, sweetheart.โ€

Review:

The Whiskey parents raised quite the blunt, caring, and upstanding brood.ย  Just like Bear, Bullet is quite the responsible human being … and, like Bear, he’s taken on a little too much.ย  Not only is he running the family bar, but he’s doing just about every heroic thing under the sun (while fighting the hero title with everything in him).ย  Along with rest of the Dark Knights, he protects the town from any rough elements, does charity work when it is needed, and steps in whenever there’s trouble.ย  It’s been fine when all he had in his life was his family and the town.ย  But now a feisty woman has caught his eye and his life might just be headed for a change.

Finlay resists her attraction to Bullet a bit at first – they don’t seem like they’d have much in common and his pickup lines could REALLY use some work.ย  But after they spend some time together, she realizes that there is more to him than she thought and their attraction may not be something to ignore.ย  It’s pretty hard to ignore a built, stubborn, cocky (but uniquely charming) protector that shows his heart is just as big as his … shoes.

There’s really not a lot of drama here.ย  Both Bullet and Finaly have a little contemplation they need to do at first as they decide whether getting involved is the right thing to do.ย  Plus, Bullet has some residual PTSD that he needs to address, but overallย Driving Whiskey Wildย is one of those slow-burn romances.ย  We’re there with them as they make their way from dancing around each other to a HEA ending.ย  It’s sweet, sexy, and satisfying to read.

Love? Second chances? That crap is for romantics, not realists like Juliette. She has a bad attitude about love and an even worse one when it comes to second chances. And she may dress like an elf for a few weeks out of the year, but that doesnโ€™t mean she loves Christmas.

Stability? Purpose? Landon is surfing a pleasant wave of both until he’s fired. Devastating news from his sister certainly doesnโ€™t help. At least he has the holidays to look forward to.

When Landon shows up at the mall and Juliette prevents a disaster, he canโ€™t stop thinking about that sweet elf. Juliette doesnโ€™t believe in the spirit of Christmas, but she canโ€™t help but wonder why Landon was in her line that day. Could Landon deserve one of those second chances she’s so unwilling to give?

Excerpt:

Weโ€™re nearing the front of the line, and Iโ€™m grateful everyone seems to be quick with their requests of Santa. Santa and the elves win points for their efficiency.

โ€œUncle Landy, my tummy hurts.โ€

And there it is. Iโ€™m not surprised sheโ€™s complaining about her stomach, but Iโ€™m a little shocked it took this long for it to bother her.

โ€œMaybe we should head home.โ€ I hate to say it, but itโ€™s the best option.

โ€œNo!โ€ The disappointment spreads across her face like a storm rolling in at fifty miles an hour. โ€œI want to see Santa. You promised.โ€

Her hands are pressed against her tummy, and her face is a shade whiter than a ghost. If we donโ€™t make it to the front of the line in a matter of minutes, sheโ€™ll leave a present right in the middle of the North Pole.

โ€œAbby, I think maybe we should do this another time. Iโ€™ll make it up to you.โ€ I hate being the bearer of bad news but Iโ€™m sure she feels terrible. I have to hand it to her for sticking it out, though.

โ€œNoooooo.โ€

I canโ€™t stand it when she cries. Sometimes itโ€™s annoying, other times, like now, itโ€™s sad and makes me sad, too. I know how bad she wants this, and itโ€™s hurting her that it may not happen.

I crouch down next to her, allowing the bags to roll off my arms and onto the ground. I take a hold of her hands. โ€œAbby, listen to me. That cinnamon roll was a little too much to eat. You should get home and rest. Standing in line wonโ€™t make you feel any better. Lying down will.โ€

She doesnโ€™t answer me, only stares at me with those big eyes, her painted-on smile now erased and carved into a frown. Her skin is becoming paler by the second, her huge eyes now drooping. I know this look. Sheโ€™s about to lose it.

โ€œHere!โ€ An arm swooshes past me with a bucket. As soon as it reaches Abby, she throws up right into it.

When Abby finishes bringing up her dinner and the Cinnabon, I pull her close to me. I donโ€™t care if I get some on my shirt or my pants. She needs comfort right now.

โ€œThank you,โ€ I say as I look up to thank everyoneโ€™s hero because letโ€™s face it, no one wants to be standing in line with someoneโ€™s puke.

My eyes float up the black leggings, past the green and red fabric with arms so wide she could use them as wings, to the beautiful woman underneath the pointed hat with a bell. Her red lips hypnotize me as she smiles, her blue eyes sparkling enough to make me believe in Santa Claus.

โ€œThanks.โ€ Thatโ€™s all I manage to say. I seem to have lost the ability to speak as Iโ€™m entirely fixated on her. I canโ€™t break my gaze from this woman in front of me.

She holds the bucket behind her back, doing us all a favor and removing the smell as fast as she can. โ€œNo problem. Iโ€™ve worked here enough years to know when itโ€™s about to happen. I always keep a bucket handy.โ€

Prepared, gorgeous, and not afraid to handle the puke monster. Iโ€™m already impressed.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. She ate a little too much, and I guess her stomach couldnโ€™t handle it.โ€ There. I found the words.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about it.โ€ She leans down so sheโ€™s eye to eye with Abby. โ€œHow do you feel now? Better?โ€

Abby shrugs, and Iโ€™m not sure if she still isnโ€™t feeling well, or if sheโ€™s being cautious with a stranger, which I appreciate. Even though sheโ€™s with me, you can never be too safe these days.

โ€œTell you what. I think you should let your daddy take you home. Come back tomorrow, and Iโ€™ll be here. You can skip the line and see Santa right away. Iโ€™m giving you a sick pass.โ€

Abby releases her hands from her tummy and smiles at me. Neither I nor Abby correct the woman dressed as an elf that Iโ€™m her uncle.

โ€œReally?โ€ Abby asks. She glances up at me and back at the woman, not sure if she should believe her or not.

โ€œYou bet. Iโ€™ll be right next to the big guy. I promise.โ€ This time the elf winks at me, and her smile widens, her cheeks so rosy against her creamy skin.

Iโ€™ll have to clear it with Courtney but I donโ€™t suspect it will be a problem unless sheโ€™s upset Abby is sick. โ€œYou can do that?โ€ I donโ€™t want to disappoint Abby and if what this woman is saying is true, I can still save the day. Uncle Landy to the rescue.

โ€œSure can. Iโ€™ve been working with Santa for years. Iโ€™m probably his number one elf. So, six tomorrow?โ€

โ€œSix tomorrow.โ€ I nod at her, trying not to exaggerate my appreciation. โ€œIโ€™m Landon, and this is Abby, by the way.โ€

โ€œSugar Plum,โ€ she says as she pats Abby on the head. โ€œGlad to meet the both of you. Iโ€™ll see you tomorrow, six sharp.โ€

Abby squeezes my hand with a little squeal to accompany it. As Sugar Plum heads behind Santaโ€™s Village with the bucket, I remain focused on her, smiling inside as the bells on her shoes ding. She may be the cutest elf I have ever seen.

The Olympic gold medalist and expert markswoman is now officially off-limits, but Jackโ€™s never cared much for rules . . .

Katie McCoyโ€™s been cooped up in a shooting range for too long. A wild love affair is just what she needs to let loose, though she never imagined it would be with her smokinโ€™ hot trainee. She cannot get involved with Jackโ€”but a quick fling? Perfect. Falling hard for a charismatic recruit with an equal amount of sex appeal and secrets? Bloody stupid.

Jackโ€™s charmed the pants off plenty of women (literally), yet few have ever looked beyond his perfect surface. Until Katie. Heโ€™ll do anything to keep her in his life . . . except tell her about his past. But a tiny lie of omission never hurt anyone, right?

He takes a step forward, his big chest rising and falling. โ€œI know Iโ€™m pushing it, Snaps. But Iโ€™m dying over here.โ€

Iโ€™m dying, too. No denying it. This attraction is very bad for my mental and physical health. He probably wonโ€™t even show up tomorrow night. His romantic comedy costar will distract him with an invitation to eat grapes on a sun- drenched rooftop somewhere and I . . . I could never get another chance to kiss this outrageously beautiful man. This trip to New York isnโ€™t only a career opportunity, itโ€™s a chance to shake off my comfort zone.

Do it, Katie. Donโ€™t regret it. Donโ€™t be a coward. Whatโ€™s the worst that could happen?

โ€œJust one, then,โ€ I whisper.

His green eyes go molten as he takes two big strides and swoops in. I hear my backpack hit the ground and then nothing, nothing, but Jackโ€™s mouth has any part of my focus.

Whatโ€™s the worst that could happen?

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans, and laptop, and drove cross-country to New York City in under four days. Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend, and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention. She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband and daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

We’ve Howdied But We Ain’t Shook Yet

May 2010

โ€œYou are dumber โ€˜n a soup sandwich, Earl.โ€

โ€œOh yeah? Well, youโ€™re a hole in search of a doughnut, Clive.โ€

Tess Tremaine walked into Slick & Junebugโ€™s Diner, past the two gentlemen arguing at the counter, and slid into one of the red vinyl booths. The old men were arguing good-naturedly, and she imagined they were probably lifelong friends, passing the time of day.

Tess smiled as she looked around the diner. She was happy with her decision to move to this friendly town. Everyone greeted her cheerfully and went out of their way to be nice. It was a pretty place to live, too. Every street in the small town was lined with decades-old trees in front of old, well kept homes full of character, just like the citizens. She was confident sheโ€™d made the right choice. This was a good place to heal from her divorce and start a new life.

A raised voice at the counter brought Tess out of her thoughts. One of the old men spoke loud enough for the whole diner to hear.

โ€œIf I had a dog as ugly as you, Iโ€™d shave his butt and make him walk backwards,โ€ he said, jabbing his index finger at the other man.

A waitress appeared at the table. Tess hadnโ€™t seen a beehive hairdo in person until she saw this waitress. With her pink uniform dress and white apron, she looked like she jumped out of a page from the sixties. Her name tag said โ€œWilla Jean.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t mind those two old coots.โ€ Willa Jean hitched her head in their direction. โ€œTheyโ€™re about as dumb as a box a hair, but theyโ€™re gentle souls underneath. Their problem is one of โ€˜emโ€™s always trying to one-up the other.โ€

She got her pad and pencil out of her front apron pocket, ready to take Tess’s order, but she stopped and cocked her head, staring hard at Tess, and smacking her gum.

“Anybody ever tell you, you look like Princess Di? I just loved her, didnโ€™t you?โ€ She bent her head slightly to the side to look at Tessโ€™s legs under the table. “‘Cept you look a might shorter ‘n Di was. How tall are you?”

“Five-five.” Tess couldnโ€™t help smiling at the compliment.

“Yep. What we have here is a mini Diana. And your hair color is a reddish-blond instead of a blonde-blonde like my girl Di. Other ‘n that, honey, you could be her clone.”

“Thank you. You just earned a big tip.” Tessโ€™s smile lit up her face.

The waitress winked at Tess. โ€œWhat can I gitcha?โ€

โ€œI think Iโ€™ll just have a Coke and a ham sandwich, please.โ€

โ€œAnything on that? Wanna run it through the garden?โ€

โ€œRun it through the…โ€ Tessโ€™s brow furrowed.

โ€œYeah, you know…lettuce, tomato, and onion. The works.โ€

โ€œOh! Just mustard, please.โ€

Willa Jean nodded and hollered the order to the cook as she went towards the kitchen. โ€œWalkinโ€™ in! A Coโ€™Cola and Noahโ€™s boy on bread with Mississippi mud.โ€

Tess smiled and looked around the diner. The front counter was lined with cake plates full of pies covered in meringue piled six inches high, cakes three and four layers tall, and two-inch thick brownies. Six chrome stools with red leather seats sat under the counter. The walls were packed with framed snapshots from as far back as the fifties. From the looks of it, they started taking pictures when poodle skirts were popular and never stopped. They were running out of wall space. The top half of the big picture window was covered with a โ€œHenry Clay Price For Governorโ€ banner. Tess spotted similar signs throughout the restaurant, and sheโ€™d noticed the waitress was wearing a campaign button.

The diner was only half full with about twenty people at various tables and booths. A few tables away, a mother was having trouble with her child. Tess heard the mother say, โ€œIโ€™m fixing to show you what a whooping is all about!โ€ When the little boy whined some more the mother added, โ€œI mean it son, right now, Iโ€™d just as soon whoop you as hug you.โ€ She looked up to see Tess watching them and said, โ€œIโ€™ll swanโ€”raising kids is like being pecked to death by a chicken.โ€

Tess laughed. โ€œI know what you mean. But you just wait. In ten years time, youโ€™ll be wishing he were five again. The time goes by so fast.โ€
“How many you got?โ€

“Just one. My son’s twenty-five now, but it doesn’t seem possible.”

“You married?โ€ the woman asked boldly.

“Divorced,” Tess answered.

โ€œHereโ€™s your Coโ€™cola, hon,โ€ Willa Jean said. โ€œItโ€™ll be just a minute more on the sandwich. You visiting or are you new in town?โ€ She propped a hand on her waist.

โ€œBrand new as of a week ago. I’ve been unpacking boxes for days. I guess you could say this is my debut in Goose Pimple Junction.โ€

โ€œWell, all Southern Belles have to have a debut. And we’re mighty glad to have you, sugar. Lessee…did you buy the old Hobb house on Walnut?โ€

โ€œMy house is on Walnut, but I believe the previous ownerโ€™s name was York.โ€

โ€œYep, thatโ€™s the one Iโ€™m thinking of. Houses โ€˜roundcheer are known for the families that lived in them the longest. Them Hobbs had the house for over seventy years, up until old Maye Hobb Carter died a few years back. It was her late husband’s family home and then hers, even when she remarried. She was a sweet old soul, bless her heart. We all hated to lose her, but it was her time. She had a hard life, and I reckon she was ready to meet her maker. Her daughter still lives in town, but she and an older sister are all thatโ€™s left of the Hobbs โ€˜round here. Mmm-mmmโ€”the things that family went through.โ€

โ€œWilla!โ€ the cook behind the counter yelled. โ€œOrder up!โ€

โ€œHold your pants on, Slick,โ€ she yelled and then turned to Tess. โ€œBe right back.โ€ Willa hurried off to get the order and came bustling back with Tessโ€™s sandwich. โ€œIt was nice talking with you, hon. Iโ€™ll leave you to eat in peace. Holler if you need anything else.โ€

A few minutes later the door to the diner opened, and almost every head turned to see who came in. Tess noticed everybody, except for her, raised a hand up in greeting, and a few said, โ€œHidee, Jackson.โ€ The manโ€™s eyes caught Tessโ€™s and held them a little longer than normal. He sat down at the counter with his back to her and ordered iced tea. Willa waited on him, and Tess heard her say, โ€œYou donโ€™t need ta be any sweeter than ya already are, Jackson. Iโ€™ma give you unsweetened tea.โ€ She leaned across the counter looking up at him adoringly.

โ€œDonโ€™t you dare Willa Jean or I will take my bidness elsewhere!โ€ he said with a big smile.

Big flirt, Tess thought.

He was a good-looking man who looked to be in his early to mid-fifties, Tess guessed, but she wasnโ€™t in the market. Being newly divorced, the last thing she needed was to get involved with another man.

As far as I’m concerned, they’re all Martians and are to be avoided at all cost. Men Are From Mars, And Women Are From Venus wasnโ€™t a best seller for nothing, she thought.

The door to the diner opened and a middle-aged man of medium height, dressed in a conservative suit and tie stuck his head in. โ€œVote for Henry Clay Price for governor, folks,โ€ he said, with a wide politicianโ€™s smile.

โ€œYou know it, Henry Clay. Youโ€™re our man. Weโ€™re proud as punch to have you running,โ€ Willa Jean said.

Other than the smile, Henry Clay didnโ€™t look like a politician. He had thinning auburn hair that was almost brown, and he wore round wire-rimmed eyeglasses on a round face. He reminded Tess a little of an absentminded professor.

โ€œYou gonna let out all the bought air?โ€ Slick grumped, and Henry Clay waved and closed the door, then ambled on down the sidewalk.

Tess finished eating and walked to the counter to pay her bill. Willa gave her change and said, โ€œNice meeting you, hon. Donโ€™t be a stranger, now!โ€

As she closed the door she heard one of the men at the counter tell the other, โ€œYou’re so slow, it would take you two hours to watch 60 minutes!โ€

โ€œI love this town,” she whispered to herself.

Chapter 1

Marry in haste, repent in leisure. ~Southern Proverb

Lenny drove to his neighborhood bar with the windows wide open and Johnny Cash blaring on the radio, but he was oblivious to both. He was thinking about the phone conversation heโ€™d just had with his ten-year-old daughter Carrie. It made him crazy the way her motherโ€™s family called her โ€œButterbean.โ€ What kind of a name was that for a child? But today he was crazy for a whole new reason. Jealousy and anger tore through him faster than small-town gossip. His daughter had spilled everything, and just when he thought heโ€™d finally gotten a break, she said, โ€œMama kinda had a boyfriend but not anymore.โ€ And: โ€œMama was kidnapped, but sheโ€™s back now.โ€

He pulled into the parking lot of the bar thinking, Boyfriend? We literally arenโ€™t even divorced yet and she had a boyfriend? He pounded his fist against the steering wheel. He knew sheโ€™d been cheating on him. And now sheโ€™d done it right in front of their daughter. No doubt about it, he was going to have to do something about this Martha Maye situation.

Pulling into a primo spot at the front door, he looked up at the old rusty sign that had been over the entrance for years: Teetotalers ainโ€™t welcome here. He winced at the loud screech announcing his car door opening, followed by the same screech when he slammed it shut. He glanced around the parking lot and saw the same cars that were there every night. His feet crunched on the gravel as he walked, and he remembered waking up three months earlier and slowly realizing his wife and daughter werenโ€™t there.

The familiar bacon and coffee smells were gone. Cartoons werenโ€™t blaring on the TV. His wifeโ€™s clothes were missing, along with his daughterโ€™s, her teddy bear, and her dolls. The bookshelves were dotted with bare spots where Martha Mayeโ€™s favorite knickknacks and paddywhacks had been. And then he saw the note on the kitchen table that said she was divorcing him and that he shouldnโ€™t try to find them. The realization that sheโ€™d left him in the middle of the night and taken their daughter seared through him like a red-hot poker.

Pretty stealthy for a woman who could literally be outwitted by a jar of marshmallow fluff. If she thinks she can literally run out on me and then humiliate me by going out with some scumbag before weโ€™re even divorced, she has another think coming. Iโ€™ll show her. Iโ€™ll put on the charm and win her back.

Country music blasted as he opened the door, turned his head, and spit in disgust. She literally canโ€™t be let her out by herself. Just look where it got her: kidnapped and almost killed.

His daughter had told him theyโ€™d been staying at his mother-in-lawโ€™s house. He should have figured. Heโ€™d always known Louetta to be a meddlesome old biddy. She lied to me when I called looking for my wife and daughter. She aided and abetted a woman leaving her husband. She allowed nefarious suitors to court my wife. Both of them must have literally stopped to think and forgotten how to start again.

And then there was his no-account, good-for-nothing brother who, upon learning of the impending divorce, wanted to know if Lenny would mind if he dated Martha Maye. Boy, Iโ€™m gonna slap you so hard, when you quit rolling your clothesโ€™ll literally be outta style. My baby brother and my wife. Yeah. Over my dead body. How could he even ask such a thing? Both of them were nothing but a bunch of backstabbing traitors.

He hitched up his jeans under his overflowing beer belly, swaggered into the bar, and ordered a Colt 45. The jukebox was playing, โ€œI Want a Beer as Cold as My Ex-Wifeโ€™s Heart,โ€ and he thought that was pretty darn perfect for his life at the moment.

Looking around the room, he spotted a hot blonde giving him the eye. He sucked in his gutโ€”a move that didnโ€™t yield the desired resultโ€”and looked back, waggling his eyebrows suggestively. She brazenly smiled back at him.

How dare Martha Maye leave me? I can literally get any woman I want. And two on Saturday.

A football star in high school, homecoming king, and voted best looking his senior year, Lenny was used to women coming onto him, not leaving him. He put the bottle to his lips and downed half of it.

That woman was literally lucky to have me. Sure, Iโ€™ve put on a little weight, but only in the gut. I practically have to fight women off with a stick. Looking around the room again, he saw female eyes on him from several tables in the room. Yessirree, sir, I still got it.

Lenny started to lift his bottle to his mouth again but halted midway when two men sat down heavily on barstools on either side of him; they looked capable of eating their young. Both men were muscular and tough. One was as tall as a telephone pole. One was as short as a gnatโ€™s tail. The taller man had black eyes under bushy eyebrows, and the other man wore aviator sunglasses on a flat, wide nose. He pushed the glasses to the top of his head to give Lenny his best glare.

โ€œWeโ€™ve been looking all over Hell and half of Georgia for you, boy.โ€ Eyebrows scooted his stool in close, crowding Lenny.

โ€œShoot.โ€ Lennyโ€™s hand automatically moved to his ankle holster, checking for his knife. โ€œThat donโ€™t surprise me none. You literally couldnโ€™t find oil with a dipstick.โ€

โ€œSolly says heโ€™s had about enough of you,โ€ Eyebrows said.

โ€œYeah,โ€ Mr. Gnat joined in, โ€œheโ€™s had about enough of you.โ€

Lenny snorted. โ€œYou can tell Solly to blow it out his butt,โ€ Lenny said boldly, more boldly than he felt. He shelled a peanut, popped it in his mouth, and threw the shell into Mr. Gnatโ€™s face.

โ€œSolly says not to let you off the hook this time.โ€

โ€œYeah, not to let you off the hook.โ€ Mr. Gnatโ€™s left eye twitched.

โ€œWhatโ€™s with Mr. Echo over here?โ€ Lenny pointed his thumb at the short man.

The telephone pole ignored him and said, โ€œSolly says youโ€™ve screwed him over for the last time.โ€

โ€œYeah, the last time.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t screw him over the first time.โ€ Lenny drained his bottle. He felt like his mouth was full of cotton. โ€œSolly wouldnโ€™t tell the truth to save his life from dying.โ€ Lenny tried to stand up, but the men had him penned in.

โ€œYou canโ€™t talk about Solly that way.โ€

โ€œYeah, not that way,โ€ Mr. Gnat echoed.

Eyebrows looked behind Lenny to his friend. โ€œThis boy has the mental agility of a soap dish, Joey.โ€

โ€œYeah, a soap dish.โ€

Lenny leaned in real close to Joey, who said, โ€œWhatta you think youโ€™re doing?โ€

โ€œJust wondered if I got close enough if I could literally hear the ocean.โ€

โ€œBoy, what you need is an education,โ€ Eyebrows said.

โ€œYeah, an edj-ee-cation.โ€ Gnat strung the word out.

The men grabbed Lennyโ€™s arms, lifting him off his stool. The song on the jukebox had ended, and Lenny heard the crunch of peanut shells as the men propelled him toward the door.

โ€œBoys, yโ€™all best not be messing with me,โ€ Lenny snapped, trying to break free.

โ€œThatโ€™s mighty big talk for a punk like you.โ€ They stepped aside as someone came through the door, and then they threw Lenny through it. He landed on the ground but sprang right back to his feet, his dukes up, ready to fight.

Eyebrows was fast. He knocked Lenny to the ground again with a left hook. Joey followed up with two kicks to the ribs.

Lenny pulled himself into a ball, both to protect himself from further harm and to have better access to his ankle holster. But Joey saw the knife and kicked it away as Lenny drew it from his pants leg.

The men both grabbed Lenny by an arm again, pulling him upright, and Eyebrows punched him in the gut, causing him to double over. They double-teamed him and left him on the ground bloody and beaten, as cars whizzed past on the road in front of the bar.

Right before Lenny passed out, he thought: Tomorrow Iโ€™ll pack up and head for Goose Pimple Junction to reclaim whatโ€™s rightfully mine. Iโ€™ll literally be a devoted husband and father and get my family back. I ainโ€™t gonna let that woman leave me. Nobody leaves Lenny Applewhite.

Talk of the Town

He may be good-looking, but good-looking won’t put food on the table.ย  โ€จ~Willa Jean Coomer

Downtown Goose Pimple Junction was bustling the next morning when Johnny parked his car and walked a block to the diner. The yellow tickets that were stuck under windshield wipers on some of the cars vaguely registered with him because Ima Jeanโ€™s abduction was on his mind, and he didnโ€™t have room to think of much else. Periodically, he thought about Martha Maye and how pretty she looked when sheโ€™d brought him fried chicken, home fries, macaroni salad, and a slice of apple pie. But he forced his mind back to Ima Jean and how he was going to go about finding her.

The diner was crowded but went deadly silent when he walked in. Everyone stopped talking, and all heads turned his way. He met a few peopleโ€™s eyes, nodded a hello, mumbled โ€œMorning,โ€ and sat down at the counter next to a man who looked older than Moses.

โ€œYouโ€™re mighty brave to bring yourself in here today, Chief. I myself donโ€™t hold no ill will, but then again, I ainโ€™t got a car, so itโ€™s no skin off my nose.โ€

โ€œCome againโ€”โ€ Johnny started to say, but Willa Jean interrupted him.

โ€œWhat can I getcha, Chief?โ€ She put an emphasis on โ€œChiefโ€ but the word was dripping with disdain.

Johnny wondered if it was his imagination or was she glaring slightly at him? He put a hand to the back of his neck as he craned his head around, finding several other people giving him the same expression. Curious.

โ€œCoffee, a fried egg, and cheese grits, please.โ€ He flashed her his best grin, but she didnโ€™t seem to notice.

She turned on her heel without another word, calling to Slick, โ€œA deadeye and mystery in the alley, Slick.โ€

Johnny noticed the old man cackling to himself and wondered what was so funny. He seemed to be a regular. Surely he was used to diner lingo. Moses turned to the man next to him and mumbled something that sounded like, โ€œI haven’t had this much fun since the pigs ate my brother.โ€

Willa Jean came back with a cup and saucer and a pot of coffee. As she poured the brown liquid into the cup, a good amount spilled into the saucer. She looked up at Johnny and deadpanned, โ€œOops,โ€ but she walked away, making no attempt to clean it up.

Conversation had started again in the diner, but it was in hushed tones, not the loud chatter that Johnny had heard when he first came in. Once again, he looked around the restaurant and noticed furtive glances coming at him. A few words and bits of sentences wafted his way: โ€œa lot of gall, arrogant, outsider, amateur, dumb as a fencepost . . . โ€ He considered asking the gentleman next to him if this was normal townsfolk behavior, but Willa Jean came back and set a plate in front of him. His gaze went from the plate to her eyes, which seemed to hold a challenge.

โ€œUm . . . maโ€™am . . . this looks right tasty, but it also looks like poached eggs and hash.โ€

Willa put all her weight on her right leg and propped her hand on her hip. โ€œLeast your eyes work.โ€

โ€œWell, see . . . I could be mistaken, but I thought I ordered fried eggs and grits.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re mistaken.โ€ She flung a towel over her shoulder and walked away.

Johnny looked at Moses and said, โ€œIโ€™m late to the party. Wanna tell me whatโ€™s going on?โ€

โ€œOooh, law,โ€ the man drawled. โ€œThat was almost as ugly as Uncle Moodyโ€™s divorce.โ€ He swiveled off his stool, saying, โ€œโ€™Scuse me. I have to see a man about a horse,โ€ and he made his way to the restrooms.

Chapter 1

A Unicorn And A Hit Woman

Mama always said . . . most people deserve each other.

Early June, Atlanta, Georgia

Sipping sweet tea and browsing Facebook on her iPhone, Wynona Baxter sat with her partner, Zeke, at a table outside a coffee shop. With her toned and tanned bare legs crossed, her left footโ€”clad in Jimmy Choo black four-inch-heeled sandalsโ€”bobbed up and down to a silent beat known only to her.

โ€œHere he comes.โ€ Zeke adjusted his sunglasses and inclined his head toward the street.

There he wasโ€”their markโ€”right on time, wearing his JC Penny ugly tan blazer and brown polyester pants set right underneath his paunch. He ran a hand through his thinning red hair, but demonstrating the manโ€™s definite need for a haircut, a long patch in the front dropped right back down over his right eye.

Wynona muttered, โ€œGet a haircut.โ€ Then to her partner, she said, โ€œHis confidence has to be ill-gotten.

Zeke harrumphed. โ€œJust like everything he has in life.โ€

Over the rim of her glass of sweet tea, she casually watched as he crossed the street, speaking to a few people along the way. His gut preceded the rest of him by a good ten inches. Why on earth a man with no outwardly redeeming qualitiesโ€”and from what sheโ€™d heard inwardly tooโ€”could strut like a rooster was beyond her.

Wynona put her glass down and ran her finger along the condensation. โ€œIโ€™ll tell you one thing. Itโ€™s obvious from the way he carries himself that there isnโ€™t any conceit in his family: he got it all.

Zeke sat back and propped a leg over a knee. โ€œYeah, but brains are another question.โ€

โ€œYou reckon he has any of those?โ€ Wynonaโ€™s foot continued to bob up and down.

The duo had been watching him, and after a week, they knew his routine. Wynona looked at her iPhone. โ€œHeโ€™s right on time and headed for the Dizzy Duck as usual.โ€

Zeke nodded. โ€œIf he hadnโ€™t made someone very angry, this wouldnโ€™t have to be his last visit there.โ€

โ€œOkay. So heโ€™ll spend thirty to forty minutes in the bar and then head for home.โ€ Wynona put the phone in her purse.
Zeke stood. โ€œWhere weโ€™ll be waiting for him.โ€

She took one more gulp of tea, shook the ice in the glass, and set it down hard on the table, shooting a look that would put frost on a snowman to the guy a few tables away whoโ€™d been leering at her for the better part of an hour. Leisurely standing, she smoothed the front of her short linen skirt. As she left the coffee shop, she was aware of the eyes on her . . . well, she could only guess which body part his eyes were on. Wynona preferred to be unobtrusive, but that was nearly impossible with her looks. But no matter, by tomorrow sheโ€™d appear totally different anyway. She thought she might enjoy being a redhead next.

The hot Atlanta sun beat down on them as Wynona and Zeke walked across the street in the opposite direction from the person theyโ€™d tailed for almost a week: Mr. Sleazy, as sheโ€™d come to think of him. They had been sitting at the outdoor table for over an hour waiting for their mark to leave his office building. Feeling like she was melting, bored half out of her skull, and glad to be on the move again, she got into their rented Lexus ES300 and turned the ignition key. She set the air conditioning to full blast and leaned her head against the headrest. The cool air blew across her face, which glowed with perspiration.

She glanced at the dashboard and groaned. โ€œIs it really 104 degrees out there?โ€

Zeke adjusted the vents. โ€œConsidering the humidity is at least in the eighty percent range, it feels more like 150.โ€

Taking a lace hankie from her purse on the passenger seat, she blotted her face so as not to ruin her makeup. She fluffed the bangs of her brown wig and slipped on her oversized sunglasses before adjusting the air conditioning vents to point straight at her. After putting the car into drive, she eased out onto the road and secretly offered Mr. Googly Eyes an unladylike hand signal.

Wynona maneuvered the Lexus down the curvy shade-dappled country lane while singing along to Garth Brooksโ€™s โ€œFriends in Low Placesโ€ on the radio. She pulled off to the side of the road, stopping just in front of a black mailbox with white lettering that spelled โ€œReid.โ€ The box stood to the right of a long driveway leading to a large colonial two-story house. This wasnโ€™t Mr. Sleazyโ€™s house but one just down the road from his ticky-tacky run-of-the-mill ranch house. After a few minutes, she was impatient. โ€œCome on, you know this road has hardly any traffic. Weโ€™ve only seen a handful of cars in the six days weโ€™ve been tailing Polyster Man.

Zeke cracked the car door, waited, and listened. The only sound was the rat-a-tat of a woodpecker. Convinced no cars were near, he hurried to the rear of the car as she popped the trunk. He pulled out a duffle bag and slid back into the car, laying the bag on the floor in front of the passenger seat.

โ€œNow watch, Wynona. You might need to know how to do this some day. Pay attention.โ€ Reaching under the clothing inside the bag, he pulled out the pieces of a Glock .40 caliber semi-automatic. Grabbing the slide, he took the barrel and slid it in, put in the guide rod and spring, keeping his thumb over it. With the weapon in his other hand, he said, โ€œMake sure there are no obstructions, match the male/female grooves, slide it on, lock it to the rear, and put down the takedown lever at three oโ€™clock.โ€ He quickly snapped the pieces into place and screwed the silencer on.

Wynona recoiled a little when he opened his bag of tricks, as he liked to call his knife set. Her mind went over the different ways sheโ€™d seen him use each one in the past. A slow and torturous death was his specialty and why people asked for him.

Wynona glanced at the time on the dashboard. โ€œI reckon weโ€™ve spent five minutes cooling off after leaving the coffee shop and fifteen driving here. It should also take Sleazy fifteen minutes to get hereโ€”after his usual thirty minutes in the bar.โ€ Wy reached in the bag, pulled out a CD, and popped it into the player. โ€œIf I Had Shot You When I Wanted To, Iโ€™d Be Out By Nowโ€ came over the speakers, and she tapped her fingers on the steering wheel as she sang along.

Zeke watched and said, โ€œI love a girl with a sense of humor in this line of work.โ€

Twenty-five minutes later, she turned off the engine. They got out of the car, and he raised the hood. Zeke crouched in front of the car, while she leaned against the Lexus to wait.

She heard it before she saw it. โ€œShowtime,โ€ Wynona said.

โ€œDo your stuff, Wy.โ€ Zeke shifted slightly in the gravel.

She leaned in under the hood from the side of the Lexus that faced the oncoming car so that her long thoroughbred legs would have a chance to work their full magic. She heard the pop of gravel and an engine slowing as he eased his car to the side of the road.
โ€œWhatโ€™s the problem?โ€ Mr. Sleazy asked as he approached her.

Holding the gun in his right hand, Zeke rose to his full height, walked past her, and pointed the weapon at Sleazy.

โ€œHoney, youโ€™re the problem.โ€œ Wynona cocked her head. โ€œBut weโ€™ve got the solution.โ€ She noticed his Adamโ€™s apple bob up and down; hers did too.

Walking toward him with the gun aimed at his chest, Zeke said, โ€œYouโ€™ve made someone awfully mad with your low quantity of moral fiber. You pretended to be someone youโ€™re not. You took advantage of people. You stole money from them. They said to make it a . . .โ€ he stretched out his words, โ€œ. . . slow, painful end to your time here on earth.โ€

Zekeโ€™s smile reflected his intentions.
