When the love of her life left without any explanation, Annabeth Winfield moved on despairingly, knowing she’d never have a love as thrilling as her first ever again. Sloane Rutherford was roguish and daring, but as Annabeth grew up, she realized that their reckless romance was just a passing adventure, never meant for stability. Twelve years later, Annabeth is engaged to someone new, ready to start her life with a dependable man.

That’s when Sloane returns. And he brings with him a serious warning: Annabeth is in trouble.

After spending the last dozen years working as a spy, Sloane thought he’d left espionage behind him. But now a dangerous blackmailer is after Annabeth. Sloane offers to hide his former lover at Stonecliffe, the Rutherford estate, but stubborn Annabeth demands to be part of the investigation. As the two embark on a dangerous and exciting journey, memories of their past romance resurface. Sloane and Annabeth aren’t the wide-eyed children they used to be, but knowing they’re wrong for each other makes a nostalgic affair seem very right…

CHAPTER ONE

1822

Sloane Rutherford wasnot a man who hesitated. He made his decisions, for good or ill, and he lived with them. But today he sat slouched at the breakfast table, food untouched, turning a note round and round in his hand, unable to make up his mind. Should he go to the wedding or not?

Actually there was no question whether he should do it; clearly he should not. The question was whether he would. The event itself didnโ€™t figure into his thoughts. While he was surprised and faintly pleased by the fact that Noelle had invited him, he held most of his own family in disregardโ€ฆand they looked on him with even less liking. Estranged wasnโ€™t the word for his relationship with the Rutherfords. Shunned would be more like it.

So, no, he had no interest in the wedding itself, no reason to go, and normally he would have tossed the invitation in the ash can. But what drew him almost painfully to attend was precisely the thing that set up an equal ache of reluctance inside his chest: she would be there.

โ€œAnnabeth?โ€ Marcus said from the doorway.

Sloane glanced up, startled, and scowled at his father.

โ€œSo youโ€™re reading minds now? One would think you would have done better at the card tables.โ€

โ€œYes, wouldnโ€™t one?โ€ Marcus replied amicably, and strolled across the room. โ€œSadly, it didnโ€™t seem to work that way. And your problem didnโ€™t take much intuition. Itโ€™s written all over your face.โ€

Marcus settled into a chair across from Sloane. Clad in his dressing gown and soft slippers, Marcus looked every inch the indolent aristocrat that he wasโ€”his luxurious white mane of hair combed back stylishly, his jaw smooth from his valetโ€™s shaving, and his dressing gown made of the richest brocade and cut to fit perfectly. Even if he looked somewhat more worn than his age from years of reckless living, he was still a handsome man.

Sloane wondered if his father might catch the eye of some wealthy widow who would take the man off his handsโ€ฆbut no, Marcus was equally banned from the tonโ€”more because of Sloaneโ€™s history than his own numerous vices.

โ€œWhat are you doing up so early?โ€ Sloane asked, ignoring Marcusโ€™s comments. โ€œYou usually donโ€™t stir from your room until ten or eleven.โ€

โ€œUnfortunately the only appointment Harriman had available was at the ungodly time of nine. Itโ€™s quite difficult to get in to see him on such short notice.โ€

โ€œAh, your tailor. That would be enough to pull you out of bed.โ€ Sloaneโ€™s mouth quirked up. Marcus was still a peacock at his age. No doubt the bill the tailor sent Sloane would be enormous, but Sloane didnโ€™t mind. Heโ€™d far rather spend his money on his fatherโ€™s fashion than on some of Marcusโ€™s other habits.

โ€œBut I wonโ€™t complain. I was lucky he was able to make room to see me.โ€

โ€œI expect heโ€™s grateful that I pay your bills on time, unlike most of his aristocratic clients,โ€ Sloane said dryly.

โ€œAnd Iโ€™ll have the entire afternoon to enjoy the prospect of the wedding,โ€ Marcus went on.

โ€œA wedding?โ€ Sloane asked skeptically. โ€œYou look forward to weddings?โ€

โ€œNot everyone is as much of a hermit as you are. Some of us find social occasions agreeable.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a hermit.โ€

โ€œMmm, yes. No doubt thatโ€™s why you spend so much time alone, brooding. Cornwall suits you perfectly.โ€ Marcus picked up the cup of tea the footman had just set before him and took a sip, his blue eyes twinkling with amusement. โ€œBut this wedding, I must admit, offers rather more entertainment than the usual one.โ€

Sloane made no response. The last topic he wanted to discuss was this wedding.

But his father needed no reply. He went on, โ€œFor one thing, there is Noelle, the lovely bride herself, and the potential of gossip over her scandalous past.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t see how running from Thorne is any scandal,โ€ Sloane interjected. โ€œAnyone with sense would do so. I find it far stranger that she stopped.โ€

Marcus chuckled. โ€œYes, he is a dull one, isnโ€™t he? But I suspect Noelle livens him up. Still, the wedding offers more excitement than that. Lady Lockwood can always be counted on to cause some sort of contretempsโ€ฆthough hopefully she will not bring her dog. Of course Lord Edgerton will be there. I believe he annoys her ladyship even more than her first son-in-lawโ€”who knows what barbs she will cast his way?โ€ He paused, then added, โ€œAnd just imagine the stir if you show up.โ€

Sloane grunted and slid back from the table, standing. โ€œWhich is precisely why I am not going to the wedding.โ€

โ€œOf course not. Thatโ€™s why you havenโ€™t tossed out that invitation. Why you were sitting there mooning over it when I came in.โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t mooning over anything. I was justโ€ฆโ€ He trailed off his sentence with a grimace.

โ€œYou were just contemplating whether facing down your relatives outweighed the prospect of seeing Annabeth Winfield.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t give a tinkerโ€™s damn about facing my relatives.โ€

โ€œAhโ€ฆthen itโ€™s whether seeing Annabeth is worth the pain.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be absurd.โ€ Sloaneโ€™s voice held little conviction, and he turned away, walking over to the window. He crossed his arms and gazed out at the street below. A moment passed, and he said in a quiet voice, โ€œIt would be foolish to see her.โ€

โ€œNo doubt.โ€ Marcus let out a sigh. โ€œThe foolish things are always the ones you most desire.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve done well enough not seeing her for eleven years.โ€ Being out of the country most of that time had helped. But even since he returned to England, Sloane had avoided Annabethโ€”well, maybe there was that one time when he first returned and heโ€™d stood outside Lady Lockwoodโ€™s house in the dark to get a glimpse of Annabeth coming down the front steps and getting into a carriage. With Nathan. Sloaneโ€™s lips tightened at the thought.

It had come as something of a shock to see her at Stonecliffe two months ago. He had not realized that she and Lady Lockwood were visiting or he wouldnโ€™t have gone there.

But as he had stood in the entryway with Noelle and the others, a door had opened down the hall, and there she had been: her soft brown hair in a little disarray, her face faintly flushed from activity, carrying a basket full of flowers. And in the moment, he couldnโ€™t speak, couldnโ€™t move, could only stare. She was as lovely as ever. And he was as dumbstruck as ever.

Heโ€™d turned and left like someone had shot at him. He wasnโ€™t sure whether he even tossed a goodbye to Noelle and Carlisle. And bloody Nathanโ€”of course heโ€™d been there. That moment had disrupted Sloaneโ€™s carefully nurtured indifference, and even after his heart stopped beating like a madmanโ€™s and heโ€™d reminded himself that heโ€™d gotten over her years ago, he had not been able to keep his mind from going back to Annabeth time after time. Like a tongue returning to a bad tooth.

Behind him his father said, โ€œWhy do you continue like this? Why donโ€™t you go to see her, tell her how you feel?โ€

Sloane snorted. โ€œIโ€™d have to fight my way through the butler and probably Lady Lockwood, too, to talk to her.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve never known you to avoid a fight.โ€

โ€œMaybe not. But I canโ€™t fight Annabeth. And sheโ€™s the one who hates me.โ€

โ€œHow do you know that?โ€ Marcus persisted. โ€œSheโ€™s never married in all this time. She has no money, of course, but a sweet, pretty girl like that? Sheโ€™s bound to have had plenty of offers.โ€

โ€œNo doubt.โ€ Sloaneโ€™s jaw tightened. โ€œBut that doesnโ€™t mean sheโ€™s been pining after me. I broke her heart. I knew I was breaking her heart. And the fact that I broke mine as well wouldnโ€™t have made her feel any better or despise me any less.โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you tell her the truth?โ€ His fatherโ€™s voice turned sharp, his usual affability gone. โ€œExplain what you did. Why you did it. Tell her that bastard Asquith blackmailed you into it.โ€

Sloane whirled, his eyes flashing. โ€œI canโ€™t tell her that. The truth would cause her just as much pain now as it would have then. I knew when I did it that I was sacrificing her love for a lifetime. I just thought my lifetime wouldnโ€™t last very long.โ€

Letting out a disgusted noise, Sloane started out of the room. Before heโ€™d taken two steps, there was a furious pounding at the front door. Frowning, he turned toward it. The pounding continued, along with someone shouting his name. Sloane reached the entry hall just as the footman opened the door and began an indignant dressing-down of the boy before him.

But the boy on the doorstep paid no attention and shoved his way past the footman, calling again. โ€œMr. Rutherford!โ€

โ€œTimmy.โ€ Sloane strode toward the door, alarm rising in him. โ€œWhat is it? What the devil areโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the docks, sir. Mr. Haskell sent me. Youโ€™ve got to come quick. The new warehouse is on fire.โ€

Catching the Captainย

Charleston Coyotes Hockey Book 2

by Jacob Chance

Genre: Hockey Sports Romance

Cover Designer: Black Widow Designs

Release Date: June 23, 2023

Tropes: Age Gap, Older Sisterโ€™s Ex, Protective Hero, Forced Proximity

Blurb:

When Kaiden Hart, the captain of the Charleston Coyotes hockey team, comes to my aid in an emergency, itโ€™s the first time Iโ€™ve seen him since I was a young girl.

And boy, have the years been kind to him.

When he invites me out to dinner, accepting seems like the polite thing to do.

At least thatโ€™s what I tell myself.

How else can I justify wanting to be near my older sisterโ€™s ex-boyfriend?

It couldnโ€™t have anything to do with his piercing blue eyes and kissable lips.

Who cares if heโ€™s got chiseled abs and a rear end I could bounce a quarter off of?

Itโ€™s definitely not how protective he is toward me. Or how thoughtful he is offering me his spare room when I need a temporary place to stay.

I know I should refuse. Really, I should run in the opposite direction.

But itโ€™s too late. Iโ€™m already falling for him.

Now, all I can think about is catching the captain.

Excerpt:

โ€œOh,โ€ I breathe out in surprise. My arms slip around his waist without missing another beat and I settle my cheek against the solid warmth of his muscular chest. My eyes fall closed as I breathe in the scent of his laundry detergent combined with sunshine. His hold on me tightens and I feel his hands wrap farther around me, like he canโ€™t get close enough.

Without an inch of space between our upper bodies, Iโ€™m trying not to think about how my breasts are crushed to his torso. Or how the deep, rumbling sounds coming from his chest are sexy enough to give me an eargasm. Or how my insides feel like theyโ€™re being tossed to and fro like a dinghy on turbulent seas.

Calm down. Itโ€™s just a friendly hug between two friends.

A hug thatโ€™s lasting a littleโ€”make that a lotโ€”longer than it should.

Excerpt:

โ€œIโ€™m not telling you shit. Youโ€™d be merciless.โ€

โ€œFine, Iโ€™ll get Declan to tell me.โ€ Her confidence makes me want to smile.

โ€œHow? He wouldnโ€™t betray me for anything.โ€

โ€œLook at this face.โ€ She points towards her nose as if I havenโ€™t been staring at her this whole time. โ€œYou donโ€™t think my adorable little face couldnโ€™t get him to squeal?โ€

I narrow my eyes at her. โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œWatch me.โ€ She takes off running toward the warehouse. Surprise causes me to falter, then Iโ€™m running after her, my legs eating up the distance in no time. She looks over her shoulder, her eyes lighting up when she finds me chasing her.

I get two steps away from her when I reach out to grab her around the middle. She squeals, her laughter ringing out as she wiggles to get out of my hold.

โ€œOh, no you donโ€™t,โ€ I huff out with a laugh. I go to lift her over my shoulder, but sheโ€™s too squirrelly. She relaxes her body, her weight dropping straight to the ground. I lose my footing with the sudden change, heading toward the ground like a fallen oak tree.

Twisting at the last second, I land on my shoulder, then roll over to my back, pulling Thia with me to keep her from hitting the ground.

Her eyes are wide, sparkling with humor and surprise. โ€œI thought you were supposed to be some badass Marine, and you just got taken down by a girl with no training.โ€

My mouth pops open in surprise. โ€œYou little shit.โ€ Before I can think, I flip us over, one hand on the back of her head, the other digging into her sides as she squeals.

โ€œOkay, okay, okay! I give!โ€ She squirms under me, trying to get away from my tickling fingers, all while giggling like a little girl.

I stop, holding my fingers at her side. โ€œTake it back.โ€ The mischievous light in her eyes makes me want to kiss her.

โ€œFine,โ€ she pants. โ€œYouโ€™re the most badass Marine who ever lived, even though you fell while chasing me.โ€ She grins.

I throw my head back, laughing. โ€œI hate that I canโ€™t even be mad at you for that last quip because itโ€™s true.โ€

Thiaโ€™s hand moves from my shoulder and down my arm. Itโ€™s then Iโ€™m fully aware of our position, of every part of me thatโ€™s touching her. I catch her gaze, her own realization happening at the same time as mine. The heat in her eyes sends my body careening off the edge.

I tighten the fingers speared through her hair as her hands move across my chest. Itโ€™s like fire racing through me. Itโ€™s as if sheโ€™s branding me with her touch so Iโ€™ll never be able to feel anything like it again.

A throat clearing behind me has my head whipping up. Connor looks at us with his eyebrows raised. โ€œIf you want to finish up whatever this is, I think Iโ€™ve figured out how to make the tracker work.โ€

Excerpt:

Stray cats need to be on their guard night and day— thatโ€™s the only way they survive. I hold my breath, watching her take two steps back and three steps forward, with one more to go. Her pupils suddenly dilate to saucers. Her back arches then a low guttural growl catches me by surprise. I scramble back like a crab, but my momentum stalls against a brick wall, and the kitty runs away.

โ€œDo you need some help?โ€ The brick wall speaks. My head snaps up, and I glimpse the source, a fair-haired man with dark eyes, a wicked smile, and a body sculpted by the gods. I blink rapidly, blinded by the sun and his unspeakable beauty. Iโ€™ve never seen anyone who looks like him, not here or in Sycamore Mountain— not even on television. But this creeper ruined my plans and threw away five days of hard work.

โ€œNo, youโ€™ve done enough.โ€ I groan, then bite my tongue, too frustrated to hide my intense displeasure for a man who was only trying to help. Itโ€™s not his fault, but my failure could result in tragedy if I donโ€™t catch that cat soon. Stray dogs roam this beach at night in search of food, and they might mistake this fat little Calico for their next meal.

I scramble to my feet, shifting aimlessly in the soft sand to regain my balance. The handsome stranger clears his throat and offers his hand. I hesitate but ultimately place my palm in his hand, letting him pull me to my feet. Attractive does not mean harmless. Weโ€™re alone on a beach, and my mother didnโ€™t raise me to be a trusting fool.ย

โ€œThank you, and I apologize for my snarky comment. Iโ€™ve been trying to catch that cat for the past few days, and this is the closest Iโ€™ve come.โ€ I stammer, embarrassed by my rudeness and hoping my contrite behavior will make amends or prevent him from carrying me into the ocean and drowning me.

โ€œYou mean Buster?โ€ His deep voice jumps an octave, and he points to the chunky Calico reclining against a nearby palm tree, frantically cleaning his behind.

โ€œBuster? Thatโ€™s a silly name for a girl.โ€ I tiptoe towards the cat and consider my next course of action. He may be huge, hot, and handsome, but I have a one-track mind. There are far more important things on my to-do list than flirting with strange men who smell like cocoa butter, and what is that? Sandalwood? A storm is scheduled to pass through later this evening, and I hate to think of this little girl spending another night cold, wet, and alone. ย

โ€œBuster isnโ€™t a girl. Heโ€™s a boy.โ€ The strange man follows close, oddly fixated on lending a helping hand. I glance over my shoulder and lift my hand to my brow, shielding my eyes from the sun to get a better look at his face. Thereโ€™s no denying heโ€™s yummy, but he doesnโ€™t know the first thing about cats.ย

โ€œCalicos are almost always girls,โ€ I huff, confident with my assessment.ย

He chuckles and points to the cat. โ€œHeโ€™s got balls. Iโ€™m pretty sure heโ€™s a boy.โ€ย

I squint and squat to get a better look. My jaw drops. My tongue ties. โ€œOh… my… God. Oh, my God. Weโ€™ve just found a polydactyl male Calico. Do you have any idea how rare he is?โ€ I flail my arms, squealing with glee, then accidentally strike his calves. He hardly flinches. Heโ€™s a golden slab of sculpted marble, and I couldnโ€™t hurt him If I tried. โ€œWe need to get him. He must be guarded like the Mona Lisa.โ€ I creep forward, and he drops to his knees, crawling next to me.

โ€œIโ€™m Felix, by the way.โ€ He stops to extend his arm, and I give him a quick shake, one eye on his sinewy forearm and the other on my fat Calico boy. He mustnโ€™t escape.

โ€œIโ€™m Harlow. Iโ€™m new to the island— on a mission to save the world, one cat at a time.โ€ I laugh, crouching low, careful not to lose the element of surprise. โ€œCan you crawl that away and block his exit?โ€ I gesture with my head and slink forward like a snake.

โ€œThatโ€™s a lovely name.โ€ His brown eyes twinkle as his mouth tips into a slight smile. My heart skips a beat, and for the first time, it has nothing to do with cats. โ€œIf I help you catch Buster, what do you plan on doing with him?โ€

Excerpt:

โ€œJeannie,โ€ Vickie, the bride, says. Sheโ€™s so beautiful with the happy newly married glow. โ€œHave you met Coltโ€™s coach, Aiden?โ€

Shocked by the question, I look around the room and hope my mother will come save me, but sheโ€™s too busy talking and laughing to bother noticing me. I clear my throat and offer him my hand. His large palm practically envelops it. When he lifts my knuckles to his lips and kisses them, I almost combust into flames. Itโ€™s been almost two years since I felt a manโ€™s lips on any part of me. That must be why my body is short circuiting right now. But if I have a few more drinks, Iโ€™m going to drag him into a dark corner and have my way with him. I clear my throat and yank my hand away.

โ€œSo, you ah, coach football?โ€ I ask, unsure of what else I could possibly ask. I try to think of any information my mother has given me. She says Mr. Colt is a football player. Vickie giggles and Colt groans.

โ€œBasketball,โ€ Aiden corrects.

โ€œAre you sure?โ€ I ask. โ€œMy mom said youโ€™re a football player,โ€ I say to Colt.

Vickie tries to hide her laugh but fails.

โ€œIโ€™m going to have a talk with Myra,โ€ Colt says, but heโ€™s being playful, so Iโ€™m not completely mortified by my faux pas.

โ€œYeah, and Iโ€™m pretty sure I coach basketball, not football,โ€ Aidan says.

โ€œOh.โ€ I wave my hand. โ€œI donโ€™t watch either.โ€ I turn back to my chair, certain that they think Iโ€™m an idiot and will leave me alone now.

โ€œMore of a reader, I see,โ€ Aiden responds. โ€œWhat book has you so engrossed?โ€

My eyes dart to the table in search of my book. I thank a higher power that itโ€™s safely inside my purse. No need to let these newlyweds and the sexy one know that my life is a train wreck. โ€œNothing you would find particularly interesting.โ€ I clear my throat, but when I turn to look at Aiden, heโ€™s looking directly at me.

โ€œTry me,โ€ he says. I take a step toward the table, grab my purse and shove it under my chair. No way in hell heโ€™ll see this book.

It Had to be You

A Chances Inlet Novel

by Tracy Solheim

Publication date: June 5th 2023

Genres:ย Adult,ย Contemporary,ย Romance

Blurb:

Itโ€™s hard to keep a big secret in a small town . . .

When Paige Hollister discovers her โ€œMr. Rightโ€ already has a โ€œMrs. Right,โ€ she swears off men forever. Even moreย humiliating, she suddenly finds herself labeled the other woman and out of the teaching job she loves. So Paige does whatย every unemployed single woman staring thirty in the face does: ย She hightails it to the beach. Bad luck like hers is hard toย outrun, however. Her getaway is stalled when her car breaks down in a small-town chock full of meddling, nosy residents.ย The worst of them being the local sheriffโ€”none other than her estranged father.

Finally on top of the golf world, Tanner Gillette is poised to show everyone heโ€™s not just an entitled playboy coastingย through tournaments on his pedigree. That is until his life is turned upside down by a little girl who shows up on hisย doorstep with a birth certificate inexplicably bearing his name. Complicating matters more, the kid isnโ€™t talking. When theย stress of caring for a child whose mother is AWOL gives Tanner a bad case of the yips, heโ€™s forced to enlist help from the oneย person in town who canโ€™t wait to leave.

Sticking around Chances Inlet and her fatherโ€™s shiny new, รผber-successful family isnโ€™t on Paigeโ€™s to-do list. Especially whenย sheโ€™d prefer to keep her embarrassing incident under wraps. Yet she canโ€™t walk away from the troubled little girl. Or theย sexy Australian golfer who just might make her want to take a chance on trusting her heart again.

Excerpt:

Tanner was already halfway to her when his brain kicked in, reminding him that this was unwise. He was supposed to be avoiding Paige. He couldnโ€™t be trusted around her. But he couldnโ€™t retreat now. Not when he could feel the eyes of every woman at the pool tracking him.

Make that every woman except Paige Hollister. She was too engrossed in her book to notice.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Whitney?โ€ he practically barked when he tossed down his towel onto the chaise next to her.

Paige jolted at the sound of his voice before pulling her sunglasses down and eyeballing him. โ€œShe and Emily went joyriding in your golf cart.โ€

โ€œNot funny.โ€ Her snark had him relaxing. He neednโ€™t be worried about Whitney. Paige took her role very seriously. Likely, she was off with Kate and Emily somewhere. He stepped out of his slides before lowering himself down to the chair.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ she asked.

โ€œThat should be obvious.โ€ He let out a satisfying sigh, crossed his bare feet at the ankles and closed his eyes.

Paige huffed beside him. โ€œFine. Kate is taking the kids for lunch after visiting the sea turtle rescue hospital.โ€ She shoved her book into a canvas bag. โ€œIโ€™ll just finish my book on the porch at home.โ€

Let her go, his brain screamed. The rest of him wasnโ€™t listening, however. Without opening his eyes, his fingers reached between them, finding her wrist, gently encircling it.

โ€œStay,โ€ he heard himself saying. Opening his eyes, he turned toward her. โ€œPlease,โ€ he whispered, not liking the pleading tone of his voice one bit.

Paigeโ€™s eyes leapt from his hand on her wrist, up to his face, only to drop back down to where her skin was scorching his. Judging by the wary expression on her face, she thought it was a bad idea, also. Still, she sank her teeth into her bottom lip before nodding.

Relief raced through him. He brushed the pad of his thumb against the pulse throbbing at her wrist. Time seemed to stand still.

โ€œIโ€™ve got your lunch, Mr. Gillette,โ€ a voice from above announced.

Paige yanked her hand away. The server was holding a folding table, but he seemed unsure where to put it until Paige gestured wildly to place it between them. She grabbed a fry from the plate and popped it into her mouth before heโ€™d even set it down.

โ€œMmm. Do you have any ketchup?โ€

The server produced several packets from his pocket. โ€œAnything else, sir?โ€

Paige picked up half the club sandwich and unabashedly took a bite.

Tanner sighed. โ€œApparently Iโ€™m going to need another one of those.โ€

โ€œAnd an Arnold Palmer,โ€ Paige mumbled around the food in her mouth.

Tanner held up two fingers. The befuddled server nodded and disappeared.

โ€œEnjoying yourself?โ€

โ€œMmm,โ€ she replied. โ€œYou might have mentioned lunch was part of the deal. I wouldnโ€™t have been in such a rush to leave.โ€

He shook his head to avoid laughing at her cheekiness. โ€œThank you.โ€

She paused mid-bite. โ€œDoes that mean lunch is on me?โ€

This time he did laugh. โ€œNo. Thank you for staying.โ€

Her eyes darted away. Despite her outward bravado, she was skittish around him today. Not that he blamed her. He turned into a fool whenever he was near her.

The server brought their drinks. Paige swallowed half of hers in one gulp.

โ€œI doubt you would have been lonely too long,โ€ she said.

โ€œPrecisely what Iโ€™m trying to avoid.โ€

She lowered her sunglasses again. โ€œAre you telling me Iโ€™m the . . . what? Some sort of decoy?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s been my experience that women wonโ€™t approach me if Iโ€™ve got a beautiful woman by my side.โ€

Paige choked on a fry. Tanner leaned over to slap her on the back. She glared at him when he let his hand linger too long.

โ€œPuh-lease. Iโ€™m no competition for those women.โ€ She waved a hand in the direction of the co-eds shimmying to an R&B song blasting from one of their mobile phones.

Was she kidding?

How could this woman not know she was a stunner? He let his eyes wander down her torso, lush and full in all the right places. Her legs were sturdy and toned right down to the purple nail polish on her toes. But it was the challenge in those pale blue eyes of hers that always seemed to draw him in. That and her saucy, sinful mouth.

โ€œWhy do women always do that?โ€

โ€œDo what?โ€

โ€œPut themselves down. Find fault with their appearance no matter how gorgeous they are.โ€

Her mouth opened and closed twice. โ€œWellโ€”โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he argued. โ€œDonโ€™t you dare shame your body, Paige Hollister. Itโ€™s magnificent just the way it is. You are beautiful just the way you are. Any man who doesnโ€™t see that is a damn fool.โ€

Review:

(warning: maybe some slight spoilers)

This is the first in this series that I’ve read so that may have something to do with it, but I really didn’t quite understand Paige’s bad feelings toward her dad. I get that he wasn’t there for her growing up, but I felt like I was missing something that would explain why she was so against getting to know him. Maybe it was explored more in his story. I also was a little lost on why she was so adamant about keeping quiet what was going on in her life. I get why she’d be a little embarrassed, but she seemed to take it a little far.

I did like her with Tanner though. I found them to be amusing & entertaining as they flirted and danced around their attraction. They were fun together and their obvious affection for Whitney endeared them even more.

Speaking of Tanner, he’s dealing with a lot. I felt so bad for him, with his childhood and then losing his brother. That’s a lot for anyone to handle but throw a surprise kid in the mix and it’s a good excuse to be a less than stand-up guy. Not our Tanner though. He’s there to support Whitney (and Paige) in any way he can and as all the details come out, he’s does the best he can for everyone involved, every step of the way.

Family drama mixes wonderfully with a little bit of a mystery, a small-town HEA romance, & meddling busy body family creating a delightful beach read. If the rest of Solheim’s books are like this one, I’ve got quite a few titles to add to my TBR pile!

Excerpt:

Forgive me kara, if Iโ€™m being too forward or intense,โ€™ Kage said softly. โ€˜But Iโ€™ve never met a woman quite like you,โ€™ he rumbled into her ear.
โ€˜Not my fault youโ€™ve spent time with women who canโ€™t compare to me,โ€™ she said with a soft smile.
He gave her a long look.
โ€˜Too right,โ€™ he finally drawled. โ€˜And now that Iโ€™ve met you, what should I do about it? I canโ€™t go back to all those other girls who donโ€™t live up to you.โ€™
โ€˜Youโ€™re going to have to try existing without me because Iโ€™m unavailable,โ€™ she shot back.
โ€˜Says who?โ€™
โ€˜Says me, and thereโ€™s nothing you can do about it.โ€™
โ€˜Is that right?โ€™
โ€˜Yep, youโ€™ll never have me,โ€™ she said.
He let out a loud laugh. โ€˜You know all youโ€™re doing is waving a red flag in front of this bull?โ€™
โ€˜And just like a matador at the top of their game, Iโ€™m going to escape you.โ€™
โ€˜Are you daring me?โ€™
โ€˜Damn right,โ€™ she said, then she slapped her hand over her mouth when she realised her mistake. โ€˜No, I meant no, Iโ€™m not.โ€™
โ€˜Too late, Harlow, game on,โ€™ he drawled. She saw a glint in his eye that sent a shiver down her spine.
โ€˜Iโ€™m serious; Iโ€™m not in the game,โ€™ she retorted.
โ€˜Well, thatโ€™s good, babe, because if I ever decide that I want you, it wonโ€™t be a game. Iโ€™m not those lame-ass, gaminโ€™ losers youโ€™re used to. Trust me, theyโ€™re not even in my race, let along in my league. See, Iโ€™m a man with no shame in going after the prize I want. Iโ€™ll give you the time, kara, but donโ€™t keep me waiting too long.โ€™
This time she almost choked at his absolute balls. He had quite the pair. โ€˜Play all your want, Kage. Doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™ll win,โ€™ she managed to breathe out.
โ€˜Thing is, babe, you need to win too, for this to work,โ€™ he said, a small smile on his lips. โ€˜Which is why this is more than just a game to me.โ€™
She heard the depth of care in his words and felt like she was being pulled into a hot, thick whirlpool of longing for something beyond her reach. What was he doing to her?
She nailed him with a long look. โ€˜Your brass is ballsy, Kage Sable,โ€™ she eventually retorted.
She turned around and stepped out of his hold of her. But she shot him a look over her shoulder that was part tease, part challenge.
He winked long and slow back at her, placing a thick arm on the gold frames of the cloud-shaped enclosure on either side of her. Heat emanated from his body behind her, and she instantly felt enveloped in a strangely wild mix of freedom and possession.
She realised at that moment that for the first time in months, years, that she was having the time of her life. In a manโ€™s company.
Although brunt, a tad crude and unrelenting, Kage made her laugh. He challenged her. He aggravated her. He pushed her buttons in a highly exhilarating way. Yet he hadnโ€™t put her down or demeaned her, ever.
She also liked that he appreciated the good things in life like she did. He did it without the snobbery and pompousness many of her exes had exhibited. He seemed a man who derived great pleasure from life but the simple, raw variety.
He was also extremely smart, kind, and intensely loyal to the things he cared for. So different to the aggro, sexist and fake macho men sheโ€™d dated in the past.
Theyโ€™d been the ones whoโ€™d wanted to mould her into what she was not.
He was possessive, yet he never acted like he wanted to own her. In fact, Kage didnโ€™t seem to care to control her. Instead, she was secretly touched by the words heโ€™d said to her ten months ago about respecting her body and choices. That flew high in Harlowโ€™s world.
Yet she was determined to keep her pledge to herself to leave dating and men alone for a few months. It sucked because the spark between them was becoming a small blaze. One that, if fanned the right way, could fire up into a major inferno.
But she just wasnโ€™t primed for it. She wasnโ€™t sure she was ready for any of it, ever. She needed to work out if love, romance and relationship were what she needed or even wanted for her life. She had little to work with, especially after the piss-poor example set by her parents.
However, those were troubles and worries for another day.
Maybe after her project with The Sable Group was delivered.
Maybe when she had time to unpack all of her and all of him.
Maybe, maybe, maybe.

Hendrix

Pittsburgh Titans series

by Sawyer Bennett

Blurb:

Hendrix Bateman is one of The Lucky Three, a trio of players who were not on the Titanโ€™s team plane the night it crashed. Feeling as if heโ€™s been given a second chance, Hendrix is determined to make the most out of his life, but that doesnโ€™t mean heโ€™s not suffering from scars that canโ€™t be seen.

When I lost my Titan brothers in the crash, it was a mixed bag of emotions. I was devastated and grief stricken, but I was also grateful to be alive. Yeah, that might cause a little โ€” okay, a lot of โ€” guilt, but now Iโ€™m determined to live each day as if itโ€™s my last.

A night out with friends puts me in the crosshairs of Stevie Kisner โ€” the devastatingly beautiful bar owner with a sharp tongue and a fire in her eyes that lets me know she has zero tolerance for guys like me. Iโ€™ve never been one to back away from a challenge, so Iโ€™m not dissuaded by Stevieโ€™s tough as nails attitude or
her big biker dad who looks like he wants to kill me. Fueled by too many shots and the raucous urging of my teammates, I set out to show Stevie Iโ€™ve got game both on and off the ice.

While I shouldnโ€™t be looking for anything more than a good time, I canโ€™t help but be captivated by Stevie. Sheโ€™s cool as hell and we burn hot together. But the more I get to know her, the more I can tell sheโ€™s holding something in reserve, and letโ€™s just say Iโ€™ve got some trust issues after my last disastrous attempt at a relationship. Now I need to decide if Iโ€™m going to let my past dictate my future or if I am willing to put my heart on the line to find out if Stevie is exactly what I think she is โ€” my everything.

Kicking It with the Best Man

Out and Kickin’, Book 1

by Riley Long

Blurb:

I’ve been out and proud for years, happily living my truth. Never did I imagine I would be asked to step back into the closet.

Until that night at the club.

After one too many cocktails, I ended up in a bathroom stall enjoying a hot and steamy tryst with a super sexy guy named Nate. We exchanged numbers and indulged in some spicy sexting.

But when I asked him to meet up again, he ghosted me.

I tried distracting myself by acting as a friendโ€™s plus one to a wedding. Who do I see standing next to the groom, looking like a snack? Nate. He claims no one knows heโ€™s gay and asks me to be discreet. Still, my years of hiding are behind me. Can I help him find the strength to come out to his family and friends? Or will his reservations be too big an obstacle to overcome?

Excerpt:

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry about that,โ€ the hot guy said. โ€œI was coming over to talk to you and I bumped into that guy who crashed into you and spilled your drink all over your shirt.โ€

I turned to face him and looked into his crisp blue eyes. โ€œItโ€™s, um, itโ€™s totally fine.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not fine. Can I buy you another drink?โ€ He glanced down. โ€œOr, shit, another shirt?โ€ Before I could answer, he forged ahead. โ€œIs there anything I can do to make it up to you?โ€

Fuck, could he ever. We were so close to one another, I could smell his cologne, musky and woodsy. His arms and chest were straining the limits of his shirt and his artfully ripped jeans hinted at thickly muscled thighs. I bit the side of my lower lip. โ€œI, umโ€ฆโ€ Heat crept into my face, starting at my neck and spreading up to my ears.

He cleared his throat and took a tiny step closer to me, closing in on my personal space. โ€œIโ€™m Nate.โ€ His voice was low and husky. He licked his lips and his gaze traveled down to my chest.

โ€œTheo,โ€ I murmured. โ€œNice to meet you.โ€

Nateโ€™s gaze leaped from my chest to my eyes and then down to my lips. He swallowed, his sharp Adamโ€™s apple bobbing in his throat. โ€œIโ€™m really sorry about your shirt,โ€ he said again, barely a whisper.

The heat roiled between us and I spoke without second-guessing myself. โ€œDo you want toโ€ฆโ€ I tilted my head in the direction of the nearest bathroom stall. Lust coiled in my stomach and groin.

โ€œYes.โ€ His response came out sounding raw and eager. Nate dipped down and pressed his lips to mine fiercely, wasting no time in plunging his tongue into my mouth. I couldnโ€™t stop the needy groan that escaped me as we stumbled into the bathroom stall. As soon as we cleared the entrance to the stall, I stuck out my hand and slid the lock home.

Blurb:

A town that celebrates Christmas year-round is the perfect place for a newly divorced, six-foot-four ginger-haired baker to open his new business, The Ginger Bread Man. Too bad he doesnโ€™t share the communityโ€™s love of everything ho-ho-ho. Fake it until you make it, right? Or hire someone who has enough holiday spirit that nobody notices your lack thereof. Enter Honey Golding, the sweetest little thing Cal has ever laid eyes on. His much-younger new employee is off-limits, but his sweet tooth might overrule his common senseโ€ฆ and his willpower.

Excerpt:

โ€œYour hours say you’re open until six,โ€ the brunette says when I unlock and open the door. โ€œSo I thought I had plenty of time to catch you.โ€

โ€œI close when everythingโ€™s sold.โ€

Little Miss Sunshine doesnโ€™t flinch at my grumpy tone. She just stares up at me with the prettiest green eyes Iโ€™ve ever seen. โ€œYou donโ€™t have anything left to sell? By quarter after four?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ An apology would be appropriate here, I know. Not my style. Hence why I need a customer service elf. โ€œCome by in the morning if you donโ€™t want to be disappointed.โ€ Shit, even I can do better than that. I huff a miserable-sounding sigh. โ€œI tell you whatโ€”Iโ€™ll put something aside for you, and you can pick it up whenever you get here. The door will probably be locked, but Iโ€™ll wait for you. Best I can do. So. What were you hoping to get today?โ€

โ€œA job.โ€ No tapping on the glass this time. She pushes past me to reach in and pull my makeshift sign from the inside of the window, then hands it to me. โ€œThis job. You wonโ€™t find anyone better. What time should I be here tomorrow?โ€

I grunt a laugh. Even smile a little. Sheโ€™s spunky, confident, and yeah, very easy on the eyes. Too easy, considering sheโ€™s gotta be in her early-twenties, and Iโ€™m knocking on fortyโ€™s door. My attraction is irrelevant. Sheโ€™s applying for a job, not a date.

Right now, sheโ€™s my top candidate, simply because of her personality. But this is my business, and despite feeling like the stupidest man alive for being blindsided back in Cali, Iโ€™m not foolish enough to hire anyone on impulse. Not even the irresistible brunette.

โ€œGot a resume?โ€ I hook a nod toward the cash counter. โ€œIโ€™ll add it to the pile and look it over later.โ€ When sheโ€™s not standing in my personal space, looking and smelling like a sweet treat I could sink into. My second head doesnโ€™t get to do the hiring.

She breaks eye contact only long enough to pull a sheet of sunshiny-yellow paper from her bag.

Despite my comment about reviewing it later, I scan the page after she hands it to me. โ€œNo bakery experience,โ€ I say, pointing out the only fault I find.

Her genuine smile doesnโ€™t waver, not even for a moment. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Iโ€™ll have your buns and baguettes figured out in no time.โ€

If she knew how much my baguette liked the sound of that, sheโ€™d snatch her application from my hand and never come back. โ€œIโ€™ll be in touchโ€”โ€ I glance at the paper again, as if I didnโ€™t already have her name and number committed to memory. โ€œMs. Golding.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s Miss, and call me Honey.โ€

Another grunted laugh slips out. โ€œHoping to sweeten me up so I give you the job, Miss Golding?โ€

โ€œI always put Honora on formal or professional documents, but everyone in town calls me Honey.โ€
Shit. Iโ€™ve got big feet and an even bigger mouth to shove them in.

She raises one eyebrow over eyes the color of moss and shiny as sea glass. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, boss, Iโ€™m not offended. What time should I be here in the morning?โ€

โ€œI havenโ€™t offered you the job.โ€ A smile forces its way past my resting grump face as I accept the hand she extended, awareness rising to riotous levels throughout my body the instant we make skin-to-skin contact.

โ€œYou will,โ€ she says, holding my hand and my gaze. โ€œIโ€™m exactly what you need.โ€

Sheโ€™s right. I know it with every cell of my being. Trouble is, I think sheโ€™s exactly what I need in more ways than I can have her.
