Book Review, Kingsmen Football Stars series, Piper Rayne, You Had Your Chance Lee Burrows

USA Today Bestselling Author, Piper Rayne, begins the Kingsmen Football Stars series with an enemies-to-lovers, second chance story set in the world of professional football.

You Had Your Chance, Lee Burrows

Kingsmen Football Stars series

by Piper Rayne

Blurb:

Lee fโ€™ing Burrows

The Kingsmenโ€™s star quarterback.

Legendary throwing arm.

Six-pack abs.

Kissable lips.

Oh, but donโ€™t forget, heโ€™s also a lying, heartless egomaniac who broke my heart in college.

It took me years to build myself back up after his deceit, and now I have the dream opportunity to prove myself working as a sports therapist for a professional team.

The hurdle? Or mountain to be more accurateโ€ฆ

The job is with the San Francisco Kingsmen.

Back when I was a naรฏve college girl, I felt lucky that he even noticed me. Now eight years later, heโ€™d be lucky if I gave him the time of day.

Which I wonโ€™t. Not ever.

Some people donโ€™t deserve a second chance and Lee Burrows is one of them.

Now if someone could only tell him that because heโ€™s hell-bent on scoring the winning touchdown and wonโ€™t accept that itโ€™s game over for us.

Review:

Second chance romances can go either way for me and I feel like Rayne made some good choices here. Shayna definitely has her reasons for holding on to old hurts – Lee did her pretty bad. (I haven’t read the prequel and, while it can be read without it, a good many reviews say that it helps with adding extra dimension to their relationship.) She’s not going to let him keep her from accepting her dream job though, she’ll just have to be strong and ignore him. Which is easier said than done when he’s intent on apologizing for his mistake.

Lee never forgot Shayna so having her walk into his world again is his chance to get her to forgive him … and maybe something more. It soon becomes obvious she’s not going to be won over easily but he’s not giving up. He just has to be patient and prove he deserves a second chance.

The first part of the story is the resolution of their past hurts. It’s handled well and I feel like Lee redeems himself nicely. I’m with Shayna, those kinds of broken hearts take a lot to get over, but his sincerity is easy to feel. So their struggle soon moves from their history to their present circumstances, which forbids any fraternization between Kingsmen players and staff. And we all know how that’s going to go ๐Ÿ™‚ I will say that while the intent may have been to show that Lee has embraced his privilege, he instead reads as very naive. He’s the leader of his team, wealthy, and in the public eye. How he didn’t see the way things would go from the beginning, like Shayna told him it would more than once … instead it just has him come across as unworldly and inexperienced. He may feel like his position has power but Shayna knows the truth. So then the question becomes what happens next.

I enjoyed getting to know Lee & Shayna and seeing how they resolve their issues. I also really liked meeting their friends and I’m anxiously waiting to see what Rayne has in store for them. Brady is quite the character and I’m hoping his new nanny can keep him on his toes!

by A.M. Williams

Blurb:

What started as a one-night stand has become an entire week stuck at sea. Can these two unlikely lovers figure things out or will one of them jump off this pucking ship?

Maureen

Taking a job working in the gym on a cruise ship seemed like a good plan, especially after being dumped and fired from my last job, thanks to my cheating ex.

What I wasnโ€™t counting on was running into the hockey superstar I had a one-night stand with.

Now Iโ€™m stuck trying to avoid the chemistry between us despite his relentless pursuit before I find myself put out to sea.

I just need to survive this cruise with my head down and avoid the drama.

Dylan

Being a guest on a loverโ€™s cruise wasnโ€™t my idea of a dream vacation.ย

But running into the woman I canโ€™t get out of my head? Now, thatโ€™s a dream come true.

I swore I wasnโ€™t interested in a relationship, but the sparks between us make it hard for me to resist. Except sheโ€™s more worried about protecting her job aboard the ship than me.

Maybe itโ€™s for the best if we go our separate ways especially once weโ€™re off this pucking ship.

But back on land a unique opportunity to help Maureen secure her dream job presents itself. Iโ€™ll stop at nothing to make it happen because as much as she needs this job, I need her and this position will give us both what we want.

Excerpt:

It was October in New Orleans, so it wasnโ€™t exactly cool outside.

But it was better than the oppressiveness of the inside.

I glanced up and down the street, noting more people were out now.

As I looked around, I noticed a small patio area I hadnโ€™t seen before when we arrived, too busy sticking close to Heidi to notice anything about the place sheโ€™d taken me to.

A quick glance confirmed it was a part of the bar I was at and that it wasnโ€™t packed.

There were empty tables scattered throughout the space. With the realization I could sit down, my feet started throbbing.

I practically sprinted to an open table along the wooden fence, sinking down and sighing as the pressure was taken off my poor feet.

Thatโ€™s what I got for letting Heidi talk me into wearing one of her cute pairs of boots instead of the sandals I wanted to wear.

I sighed in relief as I sipped my quickly warming beer, watching the knots of people outside.

There were several groups clustered at tables and on the other side of the patio was an outdoor bar.

I briefly wondered why everyone hadnโ€™t come outside instead of staying in, but realized that inside was where the real party was. It seemed like outside was where people came to hang out.

I was fine with the hanging out over the partying. I felt too old to be inside in the thick of things.

Come to think of it, the last time Iโ€™d partied hard had been my last year of grad school. Heidi had taken me out then, forcing me to drink shot after shot after graduating.

I suddenly remembered why I didnโ€™t party hard and grimaced with my next sip of beer.

I shuddered at the memories and was glad I was sticking to beer and not drinking hard liquor.

โ€œYou look too serious to be sitting here alone,โ€ a husky male voice said to my right.

I sipped my beer as I looked toward who was speaking and promptly choked on it when I got a look at the guy standing there. Tall, dark, and handsome barely scratched the surface of how good he looked.

I coughed as I put my glass down, sputtering and trying not to spit beer on him.

He smirked as he sat down across from me, a beer in his hand. โ€œI can say Iโ€™ve had a lot of reactions over the years, but not sure Iโ€™ve ever had someone choke when they saw me.โ€

I wheezed as I tried to catch my breath, a knot settling in my throat as I tried not to hyperventilate.

After a few moments, I was breathing easier and looked back at the guy.

It was Dylan Harding. I recognized him immediately, which is why I choked.

He was starting forward for North Carolinaโ€™s hockey team. While hockey in North Carolina might not be as popular as youโ€™d think, I took notice when there was a hottie on the team.

And Dylan Harding was the hottest of the hotties. When heโ€™d first started playing, I was just starting my career as a physical therapist and hoped to work with professional athletes at some point.

He was only a few years older than me and dead sexy. Light blonde hair, dark brown eyes, and a physique that would make most grown men and women cry. I didnโ€™t know anyone that was in better physical shape than he was.

So while I watched little hockey or really understood it, I understood a sexy man.

โ€œSorry,โ€ I finally said, after realizing I was staring at him. I thought fast and quipped, โ€œI wasnโ€™t sure if I was really seeing a demon or not. You took me by surprise.โ€

Dylan grinned and laughed, shaking his head as he sipped his beer. โ€œQuick on your feet. I like it.โ€

I shrugged and sipped my beer much more carefully this time.

โ€œYou from here?โ€ he asked.

I shook my head. โ€œNah, here for work. You?โ€

He got a funny look on his face at my question, but shook his head as well. โ€œNah, just visiting.โ€

Silence stretched between us, but it wasnโ€™t uncomfortable.

I looked around us as I took another gulp of my drink, trying to grasp onto something to talk about with my celebrity crush, but was drawing a blank.

โ€œIโ€™ve seen some of your games,โ€ I finally blurted.

Dylanโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œGames?โ€

I nodded quickly. โ€œYeah. At PNC Arena.โ€

He stared at me for a few beats. โ€œYou recognize me?โ€

He sounded baffled by this thought, and I narrowed my eyes. โ€œYes, I recognize you. Iโ€™m from North Carolina.โ€

His eyes widened briefly, then his expression cleared. โ€œSorry, I meant nothing by it. You just said nothing when I sat down, so I assumed you didnโ€™t know who I was.โ€

I pursed my lips as I considered what to say.

โ€œI wasnโ€™t going to admit to knowing you,โ€ I finally said. โ€œBut couldnโ€™t think of anything else to say, so I panicked.โ€

He nodded slowly, studying me, his gaze raking over me.

โ€œSo youโ€™re a hockey fan?โ€

Double Dog Dare

Milwaukee Growlers #2

by Tracy Solheim

They say he who dares winsโ€ฆ

Luke Kessler is known for his daring play on the field and his carefully scripted life off it. The Growlersโ€™ wide receiver has a strict rule of dating one carefully chosen woman per season, then letting her down gently. After all, his game is football, not love. That is until his dopey mutt falls for a French bulldog owned by a hot mess of a woman whose sassy mouth and mind-blowing curves have him fumbling his best laid plans.

After a humiliating concert performance played out in front of the world on social media, cellist Summer Pearson has sworn off a career in music. Forever. Sheโ€™s hiding out with her grandparents in Milwaukee, licking her wounds and preparing for a predictable, if not boring, law career. The last person she needs challenging her life choices is a sexy, dog-rescuing jock who loves his grandma as much as he loves a good dare.

Especially when that same guy is dating her perfect cousin.

This fun, flirty sports romance delivers a happily ever after that will have you laughing, crying, sighing, and cheering in the endzone. One-click it now for doggy hijinks, senior citizens bent on shenanigans, sexy ax-throwing, locker room bromance, steamy private cello performances, and all the feels as two people discover they are worthy of love.

Double Dog Dare is book 2 in the Milwaukee Growlers Football series but can be read as a standalone with no cliffhangers.

Solheim gives readers a wonderful set of secondary characters, a satisfying romance, and a couple that you can truly root for. And while Lukeโ€™s view on relationships may seem a bit misogynistic, he actually is very upfront about it, only getting involved with like-minded people. Everyone is aware of the situation and is in agreement of what it is and what it isnโ€™t. Then he meets summer ,,, and realizes maybe he wants something else after all.

(I wasnโ€™t sure how I was going to feel about the fact that Luke was dating Summerโ€™s cousin first, cheating in any shape or form is definitely a firm no for me, but it actually resolved itself in a satisfying way.)

Summer is struggling with her confidence after a disastrous viral performance, unsure if she can ever play again and what that means for her future. Meeting Luke quickly upends her life and has her rethinking things. And while he may feel that heโ€™s not relationship material, he quickly proves that wrong, showing himself to be so amazingly supportive as she works through her issues with performing again.

The assorted friends and family bring additional moments of humor and emotion throughout the story, adding depth and feels to an already delightful story. Iโ€™m very much hoping to see more in this series going forward.

Excerpt:

Clara

Greensboro, Iowa

2019

There were too many lilies. Clara wasnโ€™t an authority on flowers or funerals. But, it was like a flower shopโ€”that only sold liliesโ€”had exploded in the blue room of Hornerโ€™s Fuยญneral Home.

This was what happened when everyone adored you. They buried you under a mountain of your favorite flowerโ€”in this case, stargazers with their erotic pink hearts and sinus-piercing pollenโ€”before they actually buried you.

And it was just a cosmic kick in the pants that Clara Beecher was allergic to her motherโ€™s favorite flowers.

โ€œClara!โ€ Mrs. Place, her eighth-grade language arts teacher, clasped Claraโ€™s hands in her bony grip. Mrs. Place had not changed at all. She was the kind of woman who seemed midยญdle-aged at seventeen and just waited for time to catch up. โ€œYour mother was so proud of you. You and your sister, you were her pride and joy.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s nice of you to say,โ€ Clara said, keenly aware of her sister, Abbie, across the room doing the sorts of things that would make a mother proud.

โ€œAt book club, sheโ€™d go on and on about you and the imยญportant work you were doing in the city and, well, most of it went right over my head,โ€ Mrs. Place said. There was nothing complicated about Claraโ€™s work; Mom just lied about it so, as a former hippie, she didnโ€™t have to say the words my daughter is a corporate shill. โ€œBut you could tell she was just so proud.โ€

Clara pulled her hand free in time to grab a tissue from one of the many boxes scattered around the room and held it to her allergy-induced, dripping nose. โ€œThank you,โ€ she said through the tissue.

โ€œEveryone is going to miss Betts,โ€ Mrs. Place said. โ€œSo much. Thereโ€™s not a part of this town that she wasnโ€™t involved in. Church, the library. Park board. Community gardens.โ€

Like an invasive species. Invite her to something and sheโ€™d soon be running the show.

Grief is making you sharp. That was something her mother would say. If she wasnโ€™t dead.

The Blue Room of Horner Funeral Home was hot and wall-to-lily packed with people coming to pay their respects to one of Greensboroโ€™s favorite citizens.

BettyKay Beecher had lived her whole adult life in this tiny town, and the town had shown up bearing casseroles and no-bake cheesecakes for the reception after the burial, wearing their Sunday best, armed with their favorite BettyKay stories.

She sat with my dad when he was dying.

She helped us figure out the insurance paperwork when our son was in his accident.

They were all mourning. The whole room and the hallway outside and the people still sitting in their cars in the parkยญing lot. People were crying real tears, huddling, sobbingโ€”actually sobbingโ€”in corners. And all Clara could think was:

Did they know?

Had Mom, in true fashion, told the entire town the secret sheโ€™d kept from her own daughters for nearly forty years? The bombshell, life-rearranging, ugly secret sheโ€™d blurted, exasperยญated and furious with Clara in their last phone call?

Would they be mourning so hard if they knew?

Clara sneezed.

โ€œOh, bless you, honey,โ€ Mrs. Place said.

โ€œItโ€™s just allergies.โ€ Clara folded up the tissues before putยญting them in the pocket of her new black Marco Zanini suit with the sash tie and the sky blue silk lining. Sheโ€™d thought the lining might be a bit much for a funeral, but that was beยญfore she knew about the lilies.

And donโ€™t get her started on all the men wearing camouยญflage. To a funeral. Were they all going hunting after this?

โ€œSheโ€™s with your father now. I hope you find comfort in that.โ€

โ€œI do, thank you.โ€ It was, as it always had been in Greensยญboro, Iowa, easier to lie.

Another person came up with another story about BetยญtyKay Beecher. โ€œIs that your sister?โ€ She pointed across the room after sharing an anecdote about their time together in the Army Nurse Corps. โ€œAbbie?โ€

Abbie was surrounded by her friends from childhoodโ€”who used to be Claraโ€™s friends from childhood, not that it matteredโ€”who kept bringing her mugs that were not filled with coffee. Abbieโ€™s cheeks were flushed and her eyes were bright and she was half-drunk, crying and hugging and not at all bothered by the lilies.

โ€œYep. Thatโ€™s my sister,โ€ Clara said, ushering the woman toward Abbie and not even feeling bad about it. โ€œSheโ€™d love to hear your story.โ€

Three years ago, theyโ€™d stood in this exact same room, mourning their father, Willis Beecher. It was hard to be home and not see him in the corners of rooms. She couldnโ€™t drink rum or Constant Comment tea and not miss him. The smell of patchouli could bring her to tears. A sob rose up in her throat like a fist, and her knees were suddenly loose. She put a hand against the table so she didnโ€™t crumple onto the floor.

Iโ€™m an orphan. Me and Abbieโ€”orphans.

She was a full-grown adult. A corporate lawyer (about to make junior partner, fingers crossed) who billed at $700 an hour. She had a condo on Lakeshore and a good woman who loved her. Abbie had two kids of her own, a husband of twenty-five years and kept slices of homemade lemon loaf in the freezer that she could pop in a toaster in case someone stopped by for coffee. They were far from orphans.

But she couldnโ€™t shake the thought.

Clara found the side door and stepped out.

The wind was icy, blowing across the farmland to the west, picking up the smell of fries and burgers from The Starlite Room, only to press her flat against the yellow brick. She felt the cotton-silk blend of her suit snag on the brick.

The first few days of March were cold, too cold to be out here without a jacket, but the freshness woke her up. Spring hadnโ€™t committed to Iowa yet and the cornfields were still brown, lying in wait, like everything else in Greensboro, for the last blizzard to come hammering down from the Dakotas.

Her phone buzzed. She left it in her pocket.

Hornerโ€™s Funeral Home was on the other side of town from the Greensboro University, and St. Lukeโ€™s School of Nursingโ€™s white clock tower was just visible over the trees. The univerยญsity had all the flags lowered to half-mast for the week. It was a nice touch. Mom had been a student there and then a teacher and for the last twenty years, an administrator.

She closed her eyes, letting the wind do its work.

โ€œHey.โ€

Clara felt her sister lean back against the wall next to her, smelling of vanilla and Pinot Grigio.

โ€œHey,โ€ she said, eyes still closed.

โ€œThe liliesโ€”โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œYou okay?โ€

Clara hummed in her throat, a sound that wasnโ€™t yes or no. That was, in fact, the exact sound of the exhausted limbo the last few days had put her in.

โ€œMe neither,โ€ Abbie said. โ€œIt justโ€ฆ I feel like Iโ€™m missing something, you know? Like Iโ€™m walking around all wrong.โ€

Clara felt the same. Being BettyKay Beecherโ€™s daughter was a part of her identity she didnโ€™t always carry comfortably, but it was there.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Vickie?โ€ Abbie asked, and Clara caught herself from flinching at the sound of her girlfriendโ€™s name.

โ€œShe wishes she could be here but she has a case in front of the Illinois Supreme Court.โ€

She felt Abbieโ€™s doubt, the way she wanted to probe and pick.

โ€œDid you have to blow up that picture so damn big?โ€ Clara asked, before Abbie could get to her follow-up questions.

All around the funeral home were pictures of the Beecher family. Andโ€”God knows whyโ€”Abbie had decided to blow up to an obscene size, the picture of their mother that was on the back of her book: Pray for Me: The Diary of an Army Nurse in Vietnam. In it BettyKay was a fresh-faced twenty-two-year- old, with a helmet-shaped brunette bob wearing an olive green United States Army Nurse Corps uniform.

โ€œDarn.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œFionaโ€™s turning into a little parrot, so we donโ€™t swear anyยญmore. We say โ€˜effingโ€™ and โ€˜darnโ€™ and โ€˜poop.โ€™โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s effing nonsense.โ€

โ€œProbably.โ€ Clara could hear the smile in her sisterโ€™s voice. โ€œAnd yes, I did. I love that picture of Mom. She looks so brave.โ€

Clara thought she looked terrified.

โ€œMax and Fiona donโ€™t understand whatโ€™s happening,โ€ Abbie said. โ€œThey keep asking why Gran is lying down.โ€

Claraโ€™s laugh was wet with the lingering allergic reaction to the flowers. โ€œThatโ€™s awful.โ€

โ€œDenise from the hospital keeps trying to get the kids to touch Momโ€™s hand. So they can feel how cold she is and then theyโ€™ll understand.โ€

โ€œWhat will it make them understand?โ€

โ€œThat sheโ€™s dead.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s morbid even for Denise.โ€ They were both laughยญing, which felt alien but sweet.

โ€œShe says it will give them closure.โ€

Abbie reached out and grabbed her hand. Clara started to pull away, but Abbie didnโ€™t let go.

I should tell her. Part of her even wanted to. To share the burden of information like they were kids again. And Abbie, who liked the view from the perch her reputation as a Beecher in this town gave her, would tell Clara it wasnโ€™t true. Couldnโ€™t possibly be. That Mom had been wrong. Angry. Something.

Some excuse to keep everything the way it was.

That was why Clara couldnโ€™t tell her. Because Abbie had to live in this town side by side with the memory of Mom. Bringing Abbie into it would make her sisterโ€™s life harder.

โ€œAbbie, donโ€™t get upset but I am going to leave after the reยญception at the church.โ€ There. Done. Band-Aid-style.

โ€œAnd go where?โ€ Abbie asked.

โ€œBack home.โ€

And here comes the look. โ€œChicago? Youโ€™re kidding.โ€

โ€œWe have a new clientโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re leaving?โ€ Accidentally Clara caught Abbieโ€™s furious gaze and wished she hadnโ€™t. She could see her sisterโ€™s rage and her grief and it felt worse than her own.

โ€œIโ€™ll be back,โ€ Clara lied.

โ€œBullshit.โ€ So much for not swearing.

โ€œAbbieโ€”โ€

โ€œYou know. I should have expected this. You show up last-minute in your car and your ugly suitโ€”โ€

โ€œHey!โ€

โ€œWith your nose in the airโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll pay to have the house boxed up.โ€

Abbie sucked in so much air Clara went light-headed from the lack of oxygen around her.

โ€œCan we please not make this a big deal?โ€ she asked.

โ€œWhat did I ever do to you, Clara? To make it so easy for you to leave me behind?โ€

The wind caught the side door as it opened, banging against the brick with a sound that made Clara and Abbie jump like theyโ€™d been caught smoking.

Ben, Abbieโ€™s husband, stuck his head out and Abbie stepped forward. Ben was a good-looking guy in a gentle giant kind of way. Constantly rumpled, but usually smiling. He reminded Clara of a very good Labrador retriever.

She wanted to pat his head and give him a treat. And then yell at him for tracking mud across the rug.

โ€œThere you are,โ€ he said.

โ€œI was just getting some air,โ€ Abbie said, with surprising defensiveness. โ€œIs everything okay?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™sโ€ฆโ€ Ben glanced over his shoulder and made a face, bewildered and somehow joyful in a way that made Clara and Abbie push off the wall. It was his mother-in-lawโ€™s funeral after all. Joy was a strange sentiment.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Clara asked.

โ€œWell, I think you should come in and see for yourself.โ€

Ben held the door while Abbie and Clara walked back into the packed room. Everyone was silent now, pressed to the walls and corners in little clumps, whispering in that painfully faยญmiliar way out of the corners of their mouths and behind their hands. There was a path down the center of the room right to Momโ€™s casket, where she lay with her arms crossed, wearing her favorite green dress and way too much blush.

Standing at the casket, was a woman. A stranger.

Everything about her screamed not from around here. She wore an elegant long black skirt and a pair of boots with low heels of rich black leather. A gray sweater (Ralph Lauren Colยญlection cashmere or Clara would eat her own boots) with a black belt around her trim waist. Her hair was long and silยญvery blond, the kind that appeared natural but Clara would put money on the fact that it cost a lot and took a lot of time to keep that way.

She kind ofโ€ฆglittered.

โ€œWho is that?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t recognize her?โ€ Ben whispered between Abbie and Claraโ€™s shoulders, his breath smelling of coffee and cough drops.

Something about the woman did seem familiar, polished.

โ€œIs she from the publishing company?โ€ she asked Abbie.

โ€œI donโ€™t think so. They sent a cheesecake.โ€

โ€œThat morning show Mom did sometimes, in Des Moines? Ramona?โ€

โ€œRamona Rodriguez died, like, ten years ago.โ€

Clara should know this woman. But her motherโ€™s funeral was throwing her off.

โ€œAre you kidding me? You really donโ€™t recognize her?โ€ Ben asked. โ€œItโ€™s Kitty Devereaux.โ€

What do you do when The One is also the one who broke your heart?

Self-proclaimed hot mess Scout Myers is determined to prove sheโ€™s finally got her act together. Raised by grandparents who saw her as her wayward motherโ€™s wayward daughter, Scoutโ€™s used to being written off. So when the opportunity for a promotion arises at Paws in the City, the talent agency where she works, Scout is desperate to rise to the occasion. With shared custody of her little sister also on the line, Scout canโ€™t afford a single mistakeโ€ฆlike suddenly needing a canine stand-in for an important photoshoot. Luckily (or not) she knows the owner of the perfect pup replacement: the estranged husband she walked out on years ago.

On the surface, it appears Lane Hallidayโ€™s life has been blissfully drama free without Scout, but she suspects her handsome-as-ever not-quite-ex-husband doth protest too much. Working together even feels like old timesโ€”except for all that lingering, unresolved tension.ย But Scoutโ€™s not sure sheโ€™s ready to confront the reasons she left Lane, and when their plansย to finalize the divorce becomeย very real, Scout startsย to wonder whether second chancesย might be worth a little hot mess.

Excerpt:

Scout Myers could think of several good reasons to be on all fours with her ass in the air, but pandering to the worldโ€™s most disagreeable cat was not one of them. Isaac Mewtonโ€”and yes, that was his real nameโ€”was a Scottish fold with the sweetest face youโ€™d ever see. Unfortunately, despite the adorable camera-ready mug, the cat had the same disposition as those grumpy old Muppets who liked to sit on a balcony and heckle people for sport.

And Scout loved animals. One of the best things about her job at Paws in the City, New Yorkโ€™s premiere pet social media and talent agency, was getting to be around furry critters all day long.

Isaac Mewton, however, was officially on her shit list.

โ€œI can see something shiny back there.โ€ His owner pointed. โ€œWe canโ€™t carry on without his favorite toy. He wonโ€™t sit still.โ€

Scout gritted her teeth and wedged her hand between the wall and a white IKEA bookcase. Cringing, she prayed none of New Yorkโ€™s finest creepy crawlies were hiding back there and wriggled her fingers.

โ€œCome on,โ€ she muttered. โ€œWhere are you?โ€

Eventually her fingertips brushed something hard and plastic. That had to be it. How the cat had managed to bat his toy so hard it lodged itself into such a small space was incomprehensible. Almost as incomprehensible as this clientโ€™s expectations. Seriously, how were they supposed to turn her precious kitty into a star if it wouldnโ€™t even sit still for a headshot?

โ€œGot it!โ€ Her handโ€”and the toyโ€”popped mercifully free.

โ€œGreat, now can we get on with it?โ€ The client looked at Scout like this was all her fault. โ€œI have an appointment to get to.โ€

Paws in the City wasnโ€™t only Scoutโ€™s workplace; it was the brainchild of her best friend and the lifeline Scout had needed when her life couldnโ€™t sink any lower. She came into work every day striving to do the best job possible, both for herself and her boss.

That meant pasting on a can-do smile, even when she wanted to launch a cat toy at someoneโ€™s head.

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you get him to play with it?โ€ Scout said, handing over the hard plastic ring, which was clear and suspended with glitter. โ€œHe might be more receptive if it comes from you.โ€

The woman crouched in front of the cat and attempted to engage him with the toy. But he immediately batted it across the room, where it slammed into the wall and bounced onto the floor.

The photographer, who had shown a level of patience that should make her a shoo-in for sainthood, raised an eyebrow. This was going nowhere. Isaac Mewton sat on a velvet pouf with an artfully arranged bookshelf behind him that Scout and the photographer had prepared for his portrait, staring down everyone in the room like an angry king.

It was time to try something new. Scout retrieved a feather toy from their stash in the office. She needed to get these photos done now. Isla was due back in less than five minutes and they hadnโ€™t gotten a single decent shot of the cat.

Letโ€™s be real, what client would want to work with such a demanding, fussy model anyway?

Still, Scout didnโ€™t want it to look like she didnโ€™t have things under control.

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t like those.โ€ The catโ€™s owner shook her head and pointed at the feather toy. โ€œIt wonโ€™t work.โ€

โ€œWell, weโ€™ve tried all the toys you brought with you, so maybe a Hail Mary is exactly what we need,โ€ Scout replied tightly, her smile turning brittle. Lord give her strength to deal with this woman! The cat was a pain, sure, but animals were animals. They couldnโ€™t be blamed for their behavior. Their human counterparts on the other handโ€ฆ

Click!

Isaac Mewton had gone still, his eyes on the new toy, and the photographer seized the moment to start snapping. Scout moved the feather in gentle sweeping motions, and the catโ€™s eyes followed with intense focus. He raised one paw and batted at it, ignoring the steady click, click, click of the camera.

So much for him not liking it.

Scout shoved the snarky inner comment to one side and focused on getting the cat to engage so they could wrap up the meeting as quickly as possible. Next to her, the owner huffed in annoyance as though she couldnโ€™t believe her darling Isaac had proven her wrong.

When they were done and the woman and her cat had left the Paws in the City office, Scoutโ€™s shoulders sagged in relief. She was a peopleโ€”and an animalโ€”person at heart, but she had a pet peeve, no pun intended, about entitlement. Call it a leftover from her childhood. Her motherโ€™s legacy was little more than a collection of emotional scars and personal quirks, but she had taught Scout one very important lesson.

Nobody owed her anything. Whatever she wanted in life, she would have to earn it.

โ€œAre all your clients like that?โ€ the photographer asked as she packed up her equipment. โ€œThe woman seemed to think her cat was royalty.โ€

Scout shook her head. โ€œMost clients are lovely and happy to have our assistance. But thereโ€™s always the rare few who think theyโ€™re superstar material, without being willing to put in the work.โ€

โ€œHow long have you been open now? Only a few months, right?โ€

โ€œSix months.โ€ Scout couldnโ€™t help her beaming smile. It might not be her business, but she was damn proud to be part of it. โ€œAnd weโ€™ve already signed over twenty clients.โ€

โ€œIncluding Miss Pain in the Rear and her angry feline overlord?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ve had several requests for cats lately, and he was by far the cutest weโ€™ve seen.โ€ Scout sighed. โ€œLetโ€™s hope heโ€™s in a better mood when it comes time to front up for a paying job.โ€

Paws in the City represented clients with four (and six) legs. They provided social media coaching to the humans running the accounts, worked on brand strategy and generally acted as a go-between in brokering sponsorship deals and other types of opportunities. They also booked animal talent for commercial shoots, both of the print and television variety. Every day was different. Scout managed the operational parts of the

job, like booking appointments, supervising headshots, fielding media enquiries and consulting with the freelancers, such as photographers and grooming specialists. Plus any other random bits and bobs, like making sure they hadnโ€™t run out of dog treats or pods for their coffee machine.

Isla always said their mission was to make the internet a happier, furrier place, and Scout loved that sentiment.

A few minutes after Scout bid the photographer farewell, the front door swung open. Though cute, their office wasnโ€™t much bigger than a postage stamp, so Scoutโ€™s desk was situated in the waiting area and therefore doubled as their reception desk.

Isla breezed in, a wool coat slung over one arm and her long dark hair bouncing around her shoulders in soft curls. She was dressed in a pale blue blouse, fitted black pants and a killer pair of silver stilettosโ€”a much fancier outfit than what she usually wore in the office. Black, though it was one of Scoutโ€™s favorite colors, was not the best when working with their furry clients.

But Isla had been at an important networking event today, so there was no need to worry about dog fur.

โ€œThose shoes,โ€ Scout gasped. โ€œWow!โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re gorgeous, but theyโ€™ve been killing me all day.โ€ She dropped onto one of the pink velvet seats lining the far wall and kicked off the shoes, groaning in relief.

โ€œThatโ€™s a rookie move,โ€ Scout replied. โ€œNow your feet are going to puff up and you wonโ€™t be able to get them back on.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t care if I have to meet Theo barefoot tonight, thereโ€™s no way I was keeping them on a second longer than necessary.โ€

โ€œHmm, barefoot to a white-tablecloth restaurant. Classy.โ€

Isla grinned. โ€œTheo loves me as I am, blisters and all.โ€

It was true. Scout wasnโ€™t sure sheโ€™d ever seen a man so in love.

Not even on your own wedding day?

Scout shoved the unpleasant reminder to one side. The last thing she needed right now was for her mood to take a dive, thinking about inconvenient things like the fact that she was still married.

Or that she hadnโ€™t seen her husband in five years.

Review:

Tobias has had his fair share of trouble lately and he’s not exactly feeling worthy of good things. He’s struggling with a lot of guilt over the circumstances that sent him to jail and how it impacted those important to him. Crossing paths with a spitfire with a large, but damaged, heart soon has him wanting things that he doesn’t think he can have. When she claims to only one night, who is he to argue …

Madigan recently had her heart broken and is not ready to trust it to someone else. Finding herself drawn to Tobias, it works for her that he’s not looking for anything serious either. But as one night leads to more, that damaged heart might have other ideas.

There’s a lot of push-and-pull, especially from Tobias, as these two fight their feelings. He’s got a lot to work through but the draw he feels towards Madigan proves to be a lot stronger. Be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions as these two work their way from hot hookups to anger & heartache as Tobias’s past is revealed to a potential for a HEA if they can address the past. Foster is a pro at giving her readers big-hearted Alphas & tough-as-nails women to match them and delivers all the feels you could ask for, and more, with The Wicked Truth.

Like all the Dark Knights books, this one can easily stand on its own but would probably be more appreciated if you’ve read the rest. And coming from someone as good as Foster, it isn’t a hardship to add ALL the books to your TBR pile ๐Ÿ™‚

Excerpt:

โ€œOkay, I lied, alright? Yes. Iโ€™m a single girl on this lovey dovey cruise because my wingman of a friend back home fell in love with some girl and thought it uncouth to come away with me for a week. I mean, can you even imagine the nerve of him?โ€ I scoff trying to play off the fact Iโ€™m a single loser on a love cruise.

Hottie McBlue-eyes shakes his head as if Iโ€™m telling the most unbelievable tale. โ€œWhat kind of asshole is a wingman for his female friend and falls in love with another girl instead of the one right in front of him?โ€

Maybe itโ€™s the Corona, but I immediately feel my cheeks blush. โ€œOkay, first of all, Iโ€™m going to take that as a compliment, so thank you very much. And secondly, ew no. Joaquin and I have only ever been just friends. Honestly, I thought he was gay for years, but turns out heโ€™s not.โ€ I shrug. โ€œIโ€™m just sooo not his type which is totally fine. Iโ€™m happy heโ€™s happyโ€ฆeven if that puts me here aloneโ€ฆand in need of a good lie to tell my friends.โ€

โ€œOh, so youโ€™re not really here alone. You have your friends.โ€

โ€œWell yes and no. My old sorority sisters planned this couplesโ€™ trip. So, theyโ€™re all bringing their significant others. I just uhhโ€ฆI havenโ€™t told them that my significant other bailed.โ€

โ€œMeh, it wonโ€™t be so bad. Maybe youโ€™ll find some hot guy aboard to pal around with. โ€œ

A snort escapes me. โ€œYeah. Maybe Iโ€™ll meet and fall in love with some hot doctor and live happily ever after, right? I mean stranger things have happened in this crazy world, right?โ€

Hottie McBlue-eyes chokes on his sip and coughs a few times. โ€œStranger things have definitely happened, Iโ€™m sure.โ€

I offer my hand to my airport friend. โ€œIโ€™m Adrienne, by the way. I donโ€™t think I ever told you that, and while referring to me as Dildo Girl is pretty damn funny, I figured after holding my pink sparkly dick in your hands, you deserve to know my name.โ€

Laughing he takes his hand in mine. โ€œPleasure to meet you, Adrienne. Thatโ€™s a beautiful name by the way. Iโ€™m Aris McElfry.โ€

โ€œNice to meet you Aris. I didnโ€™t see you on the plane with anyone either. Are you telling me youโ€™re also here alone?โ€

โ€œWell, as a matter of factโ€”โ€

โ€œShit. It canโ€™t be.โ€

What is he doing here?

โ€œWhat?โ€ Aris watches me, alarmed by my outburst.

I plaster a neutral smile on my face and murmur through my teeth.

โ€œShit. Shit. Shit.โ€

Are they seriously together?

My heart beats faster inside my chest and thereโ€™s a sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach.

โ€œWhat? Whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

I slowly turn toward Aris and give him the biggest puppy dog eyes I can muster while speaking as softly and quickly as I can. โ€œLook, I know you donโ€™t really know me, and I donโ€™t know you, but you were kind enough to hold my sparkly dick in your hands and that has to say something for the kind of man that you are, right? So, if you would be willing to do me one more hella-huge favor I would be in your debt for likeโ€ฆmy whole lifeโ€ฆor this whole cruiseโ€ฆwhichever comes first and right now my whole life could come first and anyway I promise to leave you alone after this andโ€”โ€

โ€œAnything.โ€ He interrupts, holding my gaze. โ€œName it.โ€

I gulp down my fear and my pride and swiftly blurt out my request with a shaky voice. โ€œI need a boyfriend. Like, right here. Right now. Because the man walking toward us in the yellow shirt is my ex and I had no idea he was going to be here, now Iโ€™m horrified I might have to spend this entire trip with him gloating that Iโ€™m here alone and heโ€™s obviously not. And to add fuel to that already burning inferno, the girl with him is one of my friends and I had no idea the two of them were a thing and now if I have to tell him Iโ€™m alone, I may as well walk off this fucking ship right nโ€”โ€

Before I can finish my sentence, Arisโ€™s arm slides around my waist and he pulls me into his chest.

Hooooly God, he smells good.

โ€œStop talking,โ€ he whispers against my mouth. โ€œI get it.โ€ The energy swiftly changes between us and oh, my God itโ€™s hard to breathe. โ€œIโ€™m going to kiss you, alright? Like, really fucking kiss you so that douche sees that you belong to someone else now. Smile at me and tell me quick, is that okay?โ€
