Blurb:

Michelle and Max Turnbull are not planning on a happy holiday. Their marriage is in shambles and the D word has entered their vocabulary. But now their youngest daughter, Julia, wants everyone to come to her new house in Idaho for Christmas, and sheโ€™s got the guest room all ready for Mom and Dad. Oh, joy.

Their other two daughters are driving up from California. Audrey from L.A., picking up Shyla in San Francisco and hoping to meet a sexy rancher for Audrey along the way. What they donโ€™t plan on is getting stranded on a ranch when the car breaks down.

The ones with the shortest drive are Grandma and Grandpa Turnbull (Hazel and Warren). They only have to come from Medford, Oregon. Itโ€™s still a bit of a trek and Hazel doesnโ€™t like the idea of driving all that way in snow, but Warren knows theyโ€™ll have no problem. They have a reliable car for driving in the snowโ€”and snow tires and chains if they need them. Theyโ€™ll be fine.

Surprises are in store for all three groups of intrepid travelers as they set out on three different road trips and three different adventures, all leading to one memorable Christmas.

Excerpt:

MICHELLE TURNBULL WOULD HAVE TWO turkeys in her house for Thanksgiving. One would be on the table, the other would be sitting at it.

โ€œI canโ€™t believe heโ€™s still there,โ€ said Ginny, her longtime clerk at the Hallmark store she managed. โ€œYou two are splitting, so why not rip the bandage off and be done with it?โ€

Rip the bandage off. There was an interesting metaphor. That implied that a wound was healing. The wound that was her marriage wasnโ€™t healing, it was fatal.

She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and went to unlock the door. โ€œBecause I donโ€™t want to ruin the holidays for the girls.โ€

โ€œYou think they arenโ€™t going to figure out whatโ€™s going on with you two sleeping in separate bedrooms? Donโ€™t be naive.โ€

Ginny may have been her subordinate, but that didnโ€™t stop her from acting like Michelleโ€™s mother. A ten-year age difference and a long friendship probably contributed to that. And with her mother gone, she doubly appreciated Ginnyโ€™s friendship and concern.

Michelle turned the sign on the door to Open. โ€œIโ€™ll tell them he snores.โ€

โ€œAll of a sudden, out of the blue?โ€

โ€œSleep apnea. Heโ€™s gained some weight.โ€

Ginny gave a snort. โ€œNot that much. Max may have an inch hanging over the belt line but heโ€™s still in pretty good shape.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to be overweight to have sleep apnea.โ€

โ€œI guess,โ€ Ginny said dubiously. โ€œBut, Michelle, you guys have been having problems on and off for the last five years. Your girls have to know this is coming so I doubt your sleep-apnea excuse is going to fool anyone.โ€

Probably not. Much as she and Max had tried to keep their troubles from their daughters, bits of bitterness and reproach had leaked out over time in the form of sarcasm and a lack of what Shyla would have referred to as PDA. Michelle couldnโ€™t remember the last time theyโ€™d held hands or kissed in front of any of their daughters. In fact, it was hard to remember the last time theyโ€™d kissed. Period.

โ€œYou have my permission to kick him to the curb as of yesterday,โ€ Ginny went on. โ€œIf you really want your holidays to be happy, get him gone.โ€

โ€œOh, yeah, that would make for happy holidays,โ€ Michelle said. โ€œAudrey and Shyla would love coming home to find their father moved out just in time for Thanksgiving dinner and their grandparents absent.โ€

โ€œIf youโ€™re getting divorced, thatโ€™s what theyโ€™ll find next year,โ€ Ginny pointed out.

โ€œBut at least theyโ€™ll have a year to adjust,โ€ Michelle said. โ€œAnd this is Juliaโ€™s first Christmas in her new home and with a baby. I donโ€™t want to take the shine away from that.โ€

The coming year would put enough stress on them all. She certainly wasnโ€™t going to kick it all off on Thanksgiving. That wouldnโ€™t make for happy holidays.

Happy holidays. Who was she kidding? The upcoming holidays werenโ€™t going to be happy no matter what.

โ€œWell, I see your point,โ€ said Ginny. โ€œBut good luck pulling off the old sleep-apnea deception.โ€

Their first customer of the day came in, and that ended all talk of Michelleโ€™s marriage miseries. Which was fine with her. Focusing on her miserable relationship didnโ€™t exactly put a smile on her face, and wearing a perpetual frown was no way to greet shoppers.

After work, she stopped at the grocery store and picked up the last of what she needed for Thanksgiving: the whipped cream for the fruit salad and to top the pumpkin and pecan pies, the extra eggnog for Shyla, her eggnog addict, Dove dark chocolates for Audrey, and Constant Comment tea, which was Hazelโ€™s favorite.

Hazel. Worldโ€™s best mother-in-law. When Michelle and Max divorced heโ€™d take Hazel and Warren, her second parents, with him. The thought made it hard to force a smile for the checkout clerk. She stepped out of line. She needed one more thing.

She hurried back to the candy aisle and picked up more dark chocolate, this time for her personal stash.

Hazel and Warren were the first to arrive, coming in the day before Thanksgiving, Hazel bringing pecan pie and the makings for her famous Kahlua yams.

โ€œHello, darling,โ€ Hazel said, greeting her with a hug. โ€œYou look lovely as always. I do wish I had your slender figure,โ€ she added as they stepped inside.

โ€œYou look fine just the way you are,โ€ Michelle assured her.

โ€œI swear, the older I get the harder the pounds cling to my hips,โ€ Hazel said.

โ€œYou look fine, hon,โ€ said Warren as he gave Michelle one of his big bear hugs. โ€œSheโ€™s still as pretty as the day I met her,โ€ he told Michelle.

โ€œYes, all twenty new wrinkles and five new pounds. On top of the others,โ€ Hazel said with a shake of her head.

โ€œWho notices pounds when theyโ€™re looking at your smile?โ€ Michelle said to her. โ€œHere, let me take your coats.โ€

Hazel set down the shopping bag full of goodies and shrugged out of her coat with the help of her husband. โ€œWhereโ€™s our boy?โ€

Who knew? Who cared?

โ€œOut running errands,โ€ she said. โ€œIโ€™ll text him that youโ€™re here. First, letโ€™s get you settled.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m ready for that,โ€ Hazel said. โ€œThe drive from Oregon gets longer every time.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not that far,โ€ Warren said and followed her up the stairs.

Half an hour later Max had returned, and he and his father were in the living room, the sports channel keeping them company, and the two women were in the kitchen, enjoying a cup of tea. The yams were ready and stored in the fridge, and the pecan pie was in its container, resting on the counter next to the pumpkin pie Michelle had taken out of the oven. A large pot of vegetable soup was bubbling on the stove, and French bread was warming. It would be a light evening meal to save everyoneโ€™s tummy room for the next dayโ€™s feast.

โ€œIโ€™m looking forward to seeing the girls,โ€ Hazel said.

โ€œSo am I,โ€ said Michelle.

She hated that all her girls had moved so far away. Not that she minded hopping a plane to see either Audrey or Shyla. It wasnโ€™t a long flight from SeaTac International to either San Francisco International or LAX, but it also wasnโ€™t the same as having them living nearby. Julia wasnโ€™t as easily accessible, which made her absence harder to take. Sheโ€™d been the final baby bird to leave the nest, and dealing with her departure had been a challenge. Perhaps because she was the last. Perhaps because it seemed she grew up and left all in one quick motherly blink: college, the boyfriend, the pregnancy, marriage, then moving. It had been painful to let go of her baby. And even more so with that baby taking the first grandchild with her.

Maybe in some ways, though, it wasnโ€™t a bad thing that her daughters were living in different states because they hadnโ€™t been around to see the final deterioration of their parentsโ€™ marriage.

Michelle hoped they still wouldnโ€™t see it. She consulted her phone. It was almost time for Audreyโ€™s flight to land. Shylaโ€™s was getting in not long after.

โ€œAudreyโ€™s going to text when theyโ€™re here,โ€ she said.

โ€œIt will be lovely to all be together again,โ€ said Hazel. โ€œFamily is so important.โ€

Was that some sort of message, a subtle judgment? โ€œHow about some more tea?โ€ Michelle suggested. And more chocolate for me.

Another fifteen minutes and the text came in with Max and Warren on their way to pick up the girls, and forty minutes after that they were coming through the door, Shylaโ€™s laugh echoing all the way out to the kitchen. โ€œWeโ€™re here!โ€ she called.

โ€œLet the fun begin,โ€ said Hazel, and the two women exchanged smiles and left the kitchen.

They got to the front hall in time to see Max heading up the stairs with the girlsโ€™ suitcases and Warren relieving them of their coats.

โ€œHi, Mom,โ€ said Audrey and hurried to hug her mother.

Shyla was right behind her.

โ€œWelcome home,โ€ Michelle said to her girls, hugging first one, then the other. โ€œItโ€™s so good to have you home.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not like weโ€™ve been in a foreign country,โ€ Shyla teased.

โ€œYou may as well be,โ€ Michelle said. โ€œAnd before you remind me how much we text and talk on the phone, itโ€™s much better having you here in person where I can hug you.โ€

โ€œHugs are good,โ€ Audrey agreed.

โ€œWe brought you chocolate,โ€ Shyla said, handing over a gift bag.

Michelle knew what it was even before she looked inside. Yep, Ghirardelli straight from San Francisco.

โ€œI know you can get it anywhere, but this is right from the source,โ€ said Shyla.

More important, it was right from the heart.

โ€œAnd you donโ€™t have to share,โ€ Audrey said. โ€œWe brought Dad some, too.โ€

Sharing with Dad. There was little enough she and Max shared anymore. โ€œThat was sweet of you.โ€

โ€œWe figured you might need it,โ€ Audrey said.

Was she referring to Michelleโ€™s troubled relationship with their father? No, couldnโ€™t be.

โ€œAfter last Thanksgiving,โ€ Shyla added.

Michelle breathed a sigh of relief. Of course, they were talking about the power outage, which had ruined both the turkey and the pie sheโ€™d had in the oven.

The girls had loved it, settling in to play cards by candlelight. Michelle had been frustrated. And far from happy with her husband whoโ€™d said, โ€œChill, Chelle. Itโ€™s no big deal.โ€

It had been to her, but sheโ€™d eventually adjusted, lit the candles on the table and served peanut butter and jelly sandwiches along with olives and pickles and the fruit salad sheโ€™d made, along with the pie Hazel had brought. Hazel had declared the meal a success.

Max had said nothing encouraging. Of course.

โ€œOh, and this.โ€ Shyla dug in the bag she was still carrying and pulled out a jar of peanut butter. โ€œJust in case we have to eat peanut butter sandwiches again.โ€

Hazel chuckled. โ€œYou girls think of everything.โ€

โ€œYes, we do,โ€ Audrey said, and from her capacious purse pulled out a box of crackers. โ€œIn case we run out of bread.โ€

โ€œNow weโ€™re set,โ€ said Michelle and smiled. It was the first genuine smile sheโ€™d worn since the last time sheโ€™d been with the girls. It felt good.

โ€œOh, and I have something special for you, Gram,โ€ Shyla said to Hazel. โ€œItโ€™s in my suitcase. Come on upstairs.โ€

Michelle started. She didnโ€™t need Hazel seeing where the girls were staying and wondering why they were stuffed in the sewing room and not the other guest room. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you bring it down here?โ€ Michelle suggested.

โ€œI should stir my stumps,โ€ Hazel said and followed her granddaughter up the stairs.

Audrey fell in behind, and Michelle trailed after, her stomach starting to squirm. Suddenly she wasnโ€™t so sure about that excuse sheโ€™d invented for changing her husbandโ€™s sleeping arrangements. But the excuse was going to have to do because she didnโ€™t have time to think of anything better.

They passed the first bedroom at the top of the stairs, which had once been Audreyโ€™s and had been serving as a guest room ever since sheโ€™d graduated from college and got her first apartment. It was where Warren and Hazel slept when they came to visit. Then came the second room, which had been Juliaโ€™s but was serving as Maxโ€™s new bedroom. The door was shut, hiding the evidence. Shyla reached for the doorknob.

โ€œNot that room,โ€ Michelle said quickly. โ€œI have you girls together,โ€ she said, leading to Shylaโ€™s old room, which was serving as the sewing room. It still had a pullout bed in it for overflow sleeping when Michelleโ€™s brotherโ€™s family came to stay. Bracing herself, she opened it, revealing the girlsโ€™ luggage sitting on the floor.

Audrey looked at Michelle, her brows pulled together. โ€œWeโ€™re in the sewing room?โ€

โ€œYou girls donโ€™t mind sharing a room, right?โ€ Michelle said lightly.

โ€œWhat happened to Juliaโ€™s old room?โ€ Shyla asked.

โ€œWeโ€™re not using that room for now,โ€ Michelle hedged.

โ€œMore storage?โ€ Shyla moved back down the hall and opened the door. โ€œWhat theโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYour fatherโ€™s sleeping there,โ€ Michelle said. Hazel looked at her in surprise, igniting a fire in her cheeks.

โ€œDad?โ€ Audrey repeated.

โ€œHe snores,โ€ said Michelle. โ€œSleep apnea.โ€

โ€œSleep apnea,โ€ Hazel repeated, trying out a foreign and unwanted word.

โ€œHas he done a sleep test?โ€ Audrey asked.

โ€œNot yet,โ€ said Michelle. She kept her gaze averted from her daughterโ€™s eyes.

โ€œGosh, Mom, thatโ€™s a serious sleep disorder.โ€

โ€œHow come you didnโ€™t tell us?โ€ Shyla wanted to know.

โ€œIs he getting a CPAP machine?โ€ Audrey sounded ready to panic.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Everythingโ€™s under control,โ€ Michelle lied. Audrey looked ready to keep probing so Michelle hustled to change the subject. โ€œShyla, what did your bring Gram?โ€

โ€œWait till you see it. Itโ€™s so cute,โ€ Shyla said, hurrying to unzip her suitcase. โ€œI found it in a thrift shop.โ€

โ€œStill shopping smart. Iโ€™m proud of you,โ€ Hazel said.

โ€œI learned from the bestโ€”you and Mom.โ€ She pulled out a little green stuffed felt cactus inserted in a miniature terra-cotta pot and surrounded by beach glass. โ€œItโ€™s a pin cushion,โ€ she said as she presented it.

โ€œThat is darling,โ€ said Hazel.

From where she stood by the doorway, Michelle let out a breath, then took another. Like a good magician performing sleight of hand, she had diverted attention to something else and pulled off her trick. Now you see trouble, now you donโ€™t.

How long could she keep up the act?

Excerpt:

Because of a box full of cold, hungry, barely moving puppies, Annie had all but forgotten the reason sheโ€™d ended up in Virgin River. It was three weeks till Christmas and her three older brothers, their wives and their kids would descend on her parentsโ€™ farm for the holiday. Today was one of her two days off a week from the beauty shop. Yesterday, Sunday, sheโ€™d baked with her mom all day and today sheโ€™d gotten up early to make a couple of big casseroles her mom could freeze for the holiday company. Today, sheโ€™d planned to cook with her mom, maybe take one of her two horses out for a ride and say hello to Erasmus, her blue-ribbon bull. Erasmus was very old now and every hello could be the last. Then sheโ€™d planned to stay for dinner with her folks, something she did at least once a week. Being the youngest and only unmarried one of the McKenzie kids and also the only one who lived nearby, the task of looking in on Mom and Dad fell to her.

But here she was, hearthside, managing a box of newborn puppies. Jack rustled up the formula and cereal and a couple of warm towels from the dryer. Preacher provided the shallow bowls and mixed up the formula. She and Chris fed a couple of puppies at a time, coaxing them to lap up the food. She requisitioned an eyedropper from the medical clinic across the street for the pups who didnโ€™t catch on to lapping up dinner.

Jack put in a call to a fellow he knew who was a veterinarian, and it turned out Annie knew him, too. Old Doc Jensen had put in regular appearances out at the farm since before she was born. Back in her dadโ€™s younger days, heโ€™d kept a thriving but small dairy farm. Lots of cows, a few horses, dogs and cats, goats and one ornery old bull. Jensen was a large-animal vet, but heโ€™d be able to at least check out these puppies.

Annie asked Jack to also give her mom a call and explain what was holding her up. Her mom would laugh, knowing her daughter so well. Nothing would pry Annie away from a box of needy newborn puppies.

As the dinner hour approached, she couldnโ€™t help but notice that the puppies were drawing a crowd. People stopped by where she sat at the hearth, asked for the story, reached into the box to ruffle the soft fur or even pick up a puppy. Annie wasnโ€™t sure so much handling was a good idea, but as long as she could keep the little kids, particularly David, from mishandling them, she felt sheโ€™d at least won the battle if not the war.

โ€œThis bar has needed mascots for a long time,โ€ someone said.

โ€œEight of โ€™em. Donner, Prancer, Comet, Vixen, andโ€ฆ

whoever.โ€

โ€œWhich one is Comet?โ€ Chris asked. โ€œDad? Can I have Comet?โ€

โ€œNo. We operate an eating-and-drinking establishment,โ€ Preacher said.

โ€œAwww, Dad! Dad, come on. Please, Dad. Iโ€™ll do everything. Iโ€™ll sleep with him. Iโ€™ll make sure heโ€™s nice. Please.โ€

โ€œChristopherโ€ฆโ€

โ€œPlease. Please? I never asked for anything before.โ€

โ€œYou ask for everything, as a matter of fact,โ€ Preacher corrected him. โ€œAnd get most of it.โ€

โ€œBoy shouldnโ€™t grow up without a dog,โ€ someone said.

โ€œTeaches responsibility and discipline,โ€ was another comment.

โ€œItโ€™s not like heโ€™d be in the kitchen all the time.โ€

โ€œI run a ranch. Little hair in the potatoes never put me off.โ€ Laughter sounded all around.

Four of the eight pups were doing real well; they were wriggling around with renewed strength and had lapped up some of the formula thickened with cereal. Two were trying to recover from what was certainly hunger and hypothermia; Annie managed to get a little food into them with an eyedropper. Two others were breathing, their hearts beating, but not only were they small, they were weak and listless. She dripped a little food into their tiny mouths and then tucked them under her shirt to keep them warm, hoping they might mistake her for their mother for now, all the time wondering if old Doc Jensen would ever show.

When yet another gust of wind blew in the opened front door, Annie momentarily forgot all about the puppies. Some of the best male eye candy sheโ€™d chanced upon in a long while had just walked into Jackโ€™s Bar. He looked vaguely familiar, too. She wondered if maybe sheโ€™d seen him in a movie or on TV or something. He walked right up to the bar, and Jack greeted him enthusiastically.

โ€œHey, Nate! Howโ€™s it going? You get those plane tickets yet?โ€

โ€œI took care of that a long time ago.โ€ He laughed. โ€œIโ€™ve been looking forward to this forever. Before too long Iโ€™m going to be lying on a Nassau beach in the middle of a hundred string bikinis. I dream about it.โ€

โ€œOne of those Club Med things?โ€ Jack asked.

โ€œNah.โ€ He laughed again. โ€œA few people from school. I havenโ€™t seen most of them in years. We hardly keep in touch, but one of them put this holiday together and, since I was available, it sounded like an excellent idea. The guy who made the arrangements got one of those all-inclusive hotel dealsโ€”food, drinks, everything included except activities like deep-sea fishing or scuba divingโ€”for when Iโ€™m not just lying on the sand, looking around at beautiful women in tiny bathing suits.โ€

โ€œGood for you,โ€ Jack said. โ€œBeer?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t mind if I do,โ€ Nate replied. And then, like the answer to a prayer she didnโ€™t even know sheโ€™d uttered, he carried his beer right over to where she sat with the box of puppies. โ€œHello,โ€ he said.

She swallowed, looking up. It was hard to tell how tall he was from her sitting position, but certainly over six feet. Annie noticed things like that because she was tall. His hair was dark brown; his eyes were an even darker brown and surrounded with loads of thick black lashes. Her mother called eyes like that โ€œbedroom eyes.โ€ He lifted his brows as he looked down at her. Then he smiled and revealed a dimple in one cheek.

โ€œI said hello,โ€ he repeated.

She coughed herself out of her stupor. โ€œHi.โ€

He frowned slightly. โ€œHey, I think you cut my hair once.โ€

โ€œPossible. Thatโ€™s what I do for a living.โ€

โ€œYeah, you did,โ€ he said. โ€œI remember now.โ€

โ€œWhat was the problem with the haircut?โ€ she asked.

He shook his head. โ€œDonโ€™t know that there was a problem,โ€ he replied.

โ€œThen why didnโ€™t you come back?โ€

He chuckled. โ€œOkay, we argued about the stuff you wanted to put in it. I didnโ€™t want it, you told me I did. You won and I went out of there looking all spiky. When I touched my head, it was like I had meringue in my hair.โ€

โ€œProduct,โ€ she explained. โ€œWe call it product. Itโ€™s in style.โ€

โ€œYeah? Iโ€™m not, I guess,โ€ he said, sitting down on the raised hearth on the other side of the box. He reached in and picked up a puppy. โ€œI donโ€™t like product in my hair.โ€

โ€œYour hands clean?โ€ she asked him.

He gave her a startled look. Then his eyes slowly wandered from her face to her chest and he smiled slightly. โ€œUm, I think youโ€™re moving,โ€ he said. โ€œOr maybe youโ€™re just very excited to meet me.โ€ And then he grinned playfully.

โ€œOh, youโ€™re funny,โ€ Annie replied, reaching under her sweater to pull out a tiny squirming animal. โ€œYou make up that line all by your little self?โ€

He tilted his head and took the puppy out of her hands. โ€œIโ€™d say at least part border collie. Looks like mostly border collie, but they can take on other characteristics as they get older. Cute,โ€ he observed. โ€œPlenty of pastoral breeds around here.โ€

โ€œThose two are the weakest of the bunch, so please be careful. Iโ€™m waiting for the vet.โ€

He balanced two little puppies in one big hand and pulled a pair of glasses out of the pocket of his suede jacket. โ€œIโ€™m the vet.โ€ He slipped on his glasses and, holding both pups upside down, looked at their eyes, mouth, ears and pushed on their bellies with a finger.

She was speechless for a minute. โ€œYouโ€™re not old Doc Jensen.โ€

โ€œNathaniel Junior,โ€ he said. โ€œNate. You know my father?โ€ he asked, still concentrating on the puppies. He put them in the box and picked up two more, repeating the process.

โ€œHeโ€ฆahโ€ฆ My folks have a farm down by Alder Point. Hey! I grew up there! Not all that far from Docโ€™s clinic and stable. Shouldnโ€™t I know you?โ€

He looked over the tops of his glasses. โ€œI donโ€™t know. How old are you?โ€

โ€œTwenty-eight.โ€

โ€œWell, there you go. Iโ€™m thirty-two. Got a few years on you. Whereโ€™d you go to school?โ€

โ€œFortuna. You?โ€

โ€œValley.โ€ He laughed. โ€œI guess you can call me old Doc Jensen now.โ€ And there was that grin again. No way he could have grown up within fifty miles of her farm without her knowing him. He was too delicious-looking.

โ€œI have older brothers,โ€ she said. โ€œBeau, Brad and Jim McKenzie. All older than you.โ€

At first he was startled at this news, then he broke into a wide smile. Then he laughed. โ€œAre you that skinny, fuzzy-haired, freckle-faced, tin-mouthed pain in the neck who always followed Beau and Brad around?โ€

Her eyes narrowed and she glared at him.

โ€œNo,โ€ he said, laughing. โ€œThat must have been someone else. Your hair isnโ€™t pumpkin orange. And youโ€™re not all thatโ€ฆโ€ He paused for a second, then said, โ€œGot your braces off, I see.โ€ By her frown, he realized he hadnโ€™t scored with that comment.

โ€œWhere is your father? I want a second opinion!โ€

โ€œOkay, youโ€™re not so skinny anymore, either.โ€ He smiled, proud of himself.

โ€œVery, very old joke, sparky,โ€ she said.

โ€œWell, youโ€™re out of luck, cupcake. My mom and dad finally realized a dream come true and moved to Arizona where they could have horses and be warm and pay lower taxes. One of my older sisters lives there with her family. Iโ€™ve got another sister in Southern California and another one in Nevada. Iโ€™m the new old Doc Jensen.โ€

Now it was coming back to herโ€”Doc Jensen had kids, all older than she was. Too much older for her to have known them in school. But she did vaguely remember the son who came with him to the farm on rare occasions. One corner of her mouth quirked up in a half grin. โ€œAre you that little, pimply, tin-mouthed runt with the squeaky voice who came out to the farm with your dad sometimes?โ€

He frowned and made a sound. โ€œI was a late bloomer,โ€ he said.

โ€œIโ€™ll say.โ€ She laughed.

Sharkbait

Natural History #3

by Erin Mallon

Blurb:

My name is Louise and Iโ€™m a serial-monogamist marine biologist.

Try saying that five times fast.

Fresh out of an awful relationship and tired of always doing the right thing, this girl is finally saying โ€œscrew itโ€ and having herself a meaningless fling.

Hereโ€™s the thing about flings though: they only work if you keep feelings out of the equation.

Well, that wonโ€™t be a problem for a sensible scientist like meโ€ฆ that is, until a one night stand with a hot single dad rocks my world and blows my plans completely out of the water.

If Iโ€™ve learned anything from the ocean world, itโ€™s that those with the hardest shells have the most to fear. And something tells me this guy is going to crack mine wide the hell open.

Excerpt:

Tonight Iโ€˜m not โ€œsmart girlโ€ Louise who weighs every decision over and over until her brain is ready to burst. Tonight, Iโ€™m not โ€œresponsible girlโ€ Louise who everyone counts on to do the right thing.

Tonight, I am Lou: the girl who does whateverโ€”or whoeverโ€”she wants.

James breaks from the kiss and runs the backs of his fingers down my cold cheek. โ€œYouโ€™re really not gonna tell me your name?โ€ His whisper sends delicious chills across my skin.

โ€œNo, I am not,โ€ I whisper back.

โ€œAlright.โ€ His deep voice vibrates as he rains kisses down the column of my throat. โ€œI guess Iโ€™ll keep calling you Cold Brew then.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t like that.โ€

โ€œOh no?โ€ He tears his lips away.ย

โ€œResume what you were doing, please!โ€ Iโ€™m giving him mixed signals. โ€œWhat I meant was I like that.โ€ I point at his mouth, then jut my neck out in his direction. โ€œThe uh, that thing you were doing just now to my neck? That was good. But Iโ€™d prefer it if you didnโ€™t call me… Cold Brew.โ€

He dives into my neck again, and I think weโ€™re back on track until he murmurs this madness between kisses, โ€œThatโ€™s too bad. A hot thing like you slowly pouring over me and effortlessly spiking the temps in my refrigerator? A strong, concentrated woman like you who wonโ€™t be diluted with water for other peopleโ€™s comfort? A delectable drink of a girl like you who isnโ€™t afraid of a coarse grind when everyone else is pummeling themselves into soft, palatable powders to please the masses? Cold Brew is the perfect nickname for you.โ€

What the hell is he talking about?

So heโ€™s weird.

Thatโ€™s fine.

After tonight, Iโ€™ll never see him again.

Looks like I need to take matters into my own hands.

I cup the bulge in his jeans and feel him respond.

Now weโ€™re getting somewhere.ย

I think.ย

โ€œYou said you donโ€™t mind the cold,โ€ he breathes. โ€œAre you into winter sports then? Skiing, snowshoeing, mountain climbing?โ€ย

โ€œNot into winter sports, no.โ€ I desperately work to undo his pants.

โ€œSo what are you into?โ€ he rumbles as he helps me with the button.

โ€œYou mean sex-wise? The regular stuff. The regular stuff will do.โ€

He laughs. โ€œGood to know. But I meant what are you into in life? Like hobbies and stuff.โ€ย

Alright. Now buddy boy here is starting to test my patience.

โ€œNot really a hobby person. My hobby is my work, and my work is my hobby.โ€

Score! Jeans are officially down. He kicks them, and they land on top of an icy growler, almost like he choreographed it. You would think a woman getting him pants-less would be enough to curb this guyโ€™s relentless inquisition, but no.

โ€œWhatโ€™s your work then?โ€

โ€œMarine biology,โ€ I huff. โ€œCan weโ€”?โ€

โ€œOh wow, the ocean and I are like this.โ€ He crosses his index and middle finger in that universal sign of closeness. โ€œIโ€™m a swimmer! A diver too!โ€

โ€œCool, cool,โ€ I say and try to get his focus back to the physical. The fact that we have both been in a body of water at some point in our lives does not bind us together in any meaningful way.

โ€œIโ€™ve been told I have the lung capacity of a whale.โ€ He pats his chest. โ€œYeah, these guys certainly served me well when I free dived in Sri Lanka. Wait. Is it โ€˜divedโ€™ or โ€˜doveโ€™? โ€˜Divedโ€™ always sounds wrong to my ear, but I think thatโ€™s actually correct. Doesnโ€™t matter. Point is, I love extreme sports! And speaking of marine biology, get this, once a week I volunteer atโ€”โ€

โ€œHey, James!โ€ I shout.

He stops speaking.

Hallelujah!

I soften my voice to a husky tone. โ€œIt is James, right?โ€ โ€œJames, yeah,โ€ he confirms with a dazzling smile.ย

I reach into his pants and find him more than ready for me, so I start to stroke.

โ€œYouโ€™re fucking gorgeous, James,โ€ I whisper in his ear and shiver when his stubbled cheek brushes against mine. His olive skin smells like ivory soap and shaving cream.

He tightens his strong arms around my back and pulls me closer. I continue my ministrations below.

โ€œThank you,โ€ he says. โ€œYouโ€™re alsoโ€”โ€

โ€œAnd you seem like a nice guy.โ€ I interrupt.ย

He smiles. โ€œI appreciate that. You seem like aโ€”โ€

โ€œBut Iโ€™m not looking for a nice guy.โ€

โ€œNo?โ€

โ€œNo. Iโ€™m not looking for any guy.โ€ย

He looks down and laughs good-naturedly. โ€œSo why are weโ€”?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m using you.โ€

His laughter stops.

He removes my hand.ย

His dark eyes land on mine.

Whoa. When he looks at me like that, I feel completely naked. In fairness, I am practically naked right now, but I mean more in the emotional sense, in the oh-my-God-he-can-see-deep-into-my-soul sense.

He stays completely still and silent, giving no clue as to what heโ€™s thinking or what heโ€™s going to do next.

โ€œIโ€™m not interested in anything beyond what we do here tonight, okay, James?โ€ I continue. โ€œListen up because this is very important.โ€

His non-response seems to say, โ€œGo on.โ€

โ€œAfter tonight? If you ever run into me again, we pretend this never happened.โ€

No reaction.

I repeat myself. โ€œWe pretend this never happened.โ€

Still nothing.

Geez. For a guy who couldnโ€™t shut up a few minutes ago, heโ€™s now fully committed to his silence.

โ€œGot it?โ€ I say with more force than necessary, but suddenly, I canโ€™t get myself to look directly at him.

He closes the distance between us, climbs his fingers into my hair, and gives it a tug, gently forcing me to look up at him.

Tingles cascade down my spine.

He tilts his head slightly.ย

His lips are barely an inch from mine.

His warm breath caresses my skin.

โ€œThen I guess weโ€™ll need to make tonight count, wonโ€™t we?โ€ย

Now Iโ€™m the silent one.

All I can do is nod.

โ€œLetโ€™s do this, Cold Brew.โ€

Review:

That first meeting between James and Louise really got me – I understood where she was coming from but my heart went out to him and did so over & over again. He’s an honestly good guy and deserves someone who can appreciate him. And while Louise is obviously struggling with a few things, fate keeps throwing them together and it doesn’t take long for James to wiggle his way in making her think that maybe she can be that person.

While I would have liked to have seen more about Louise’s past relationships to truly understand her reluctance to get involved with James, the predicaments they find themselves in along the way more than made up for it. I was amused and engaged and always looking forward to “just one more chapter” so that’s a definite win for me.

This is my first book by Mallon but it won’t be my last. Sharkbait was funny and entertaining, with enjoyable characters and a satisfying HEA.

(Part of a series but can be read as a stand alone.)

Coen

Pittsburgh Titans series

by Sawyer Bennett

Blurb:

Coen Highsmith was a league star, but he lost more than his team the day the Pittsburgh Titansโ€™ plane crashed. Can he be saved from his downward spiral of guilt and regret to become the man he once was?

I had it allโ€”a successful hockey career, the respect and adoration of the fans, a rotation of beautiful women warming my bed, and a feeling of self-worth and contentment with the direction of my life. But that all changed the day the team plane went down, taking my only chance of redemption with it. Now Iโ€™m left with the daily reminder of all my failures and my inability to correct them.

My new teammates are tired of my attitude and following my suspension, I hole up in a mountain cabin to get away from all of it. The isolation is exactly what I need to get out of my own head, and Iโ€™m beginning to think I could be content in this quiet forever.

Tillie Marshall isnโ€™t the type of woman who would usually catch my attention, yet she manages to do so for all the wrong reasons. Iโ€™m here for the peace and seclusion but the quirky artist is hell-bent on destroying that by cutting down the trees that separate our properties so she can open a pottery studio. If itโ€™s a fight she wants, itโ€™s a fight sheโ€™ll get. I have the money and the time and no issues bringing her down through the court system. While I see flashes of steely determination within her, Iโ€™ve found that being a jerk comes naturally these days and she wonโ€™t be hard to intimidate.

Unfortunately, that gorgeous and somewhat odd neighbor who has been causing me grief is creating another type of feeling within me. And once that spark is lit, Tillie displays a faith in me that for the first time since the crash I desperately want to believe. Now itโ€™s time for me to step up and become the manโ€”no, a better man than I once was.

Review:

As a returning reader I was looking forward to Coen’s story, to finding out what was behind his behavior. There’s a lot of survivor’s guilt, but more is going on than that and it’s affecting every aspect of his life. He needs some time on his own to figure out where he’s going from here, but it’s not long before he’s butting heads with his cheeky neighbor.

Tillie isn’t going to let Coen walk all over her or let his a$$hole tendencies get her down. Willing to go toe to toe with him and call him on his crap, it doesn’t take her long to get under his skin. And it leads to all sorts of fun.

I really enjoyed these two together. Coen is behaving like an a$$hole but he recognizes that it’s a reflection of his guilt and feeling of unworthiness. While he doesn’t see a way out of the place he’s found himself in, his innate good and caring (and cocky) nature finds moments to come out, especially around his new neighbor. And over time, with the help of friends, he’s reevaluating whether this is his new normal after all. It’s satisfying to see him find his way back and a way forward with Tillie by his side.

The Book Boyfriend

Meet Cute Book Club series

by Kate Stacy

Blurb:

Escape with the Meet Cute Book Club, where meet cutes don’t happen only between the pages of romance novels, and one by one, all the members find their own happily ever afters.

Mila

I never thought Iโ€™d have a real-life meet cute, but the minute Crossland Parker walks into my life, it starts feeling like Iโ€™m living in the pages of a romance novel.

He sweeps me off my feet, and I find myself falling fast and hard for the rough around the edges mechanic. Heโ€™s a troubled bad boy with a heart of gold.

Cross fits into my life effortlessly, even sharing my love of books. Heโ€™s everything I didnโ€™t know I wanted in a man. Attentive, sweet, a little bit possessive. Heโ€™s also my biggest source of support when I decide I want to buy the building next door so I can expand my business. So what if he has a criminal record? No one is perfect.

Unless you ask my stepfather. He expects nothing less than perfection, but not even I could ever come close.

Cross

After spending too many years wandering when I was released from prison, I came back to Abbott Ridge to start over.

I wasnโ€™t expecting Mila Santos to fall into my arms, but Iโ€™m irrevocably drawn to the curvy little beauty who owns the bookstore. Sheโ€™s a good girl, too good for a guy like me?

Our relationship develops faster than most, but I spent too many years of my life locked up. Now that Iโ€™m out, I refuse to waste a single second. Iโ€™m still not sure I deserve someone as sweet as Mila, but if she accepts me and all my faults, thereโ€™s no way Iโ€™m letting her go. Only a fucking fool would do that.

My past is no secret, and I knew the day would come when someone would try to use it against me. I just didnโ€™t expect it to happen so soon.

Is happily ever after possible when a good girl falls for the guy from the wrong side of the tracks?

The Book Boyfriend is a standalone, wrong side of the tracks romance that is part of the Meet Cute Book Club multi-author series.

Excerpt:

Sheโ€™s fucking adorable.

Mila is still standing in the spot where I left her when I pass by the bookstoreโ€™s front window.

Grinning, I toss her a wink and keep walking, picturing the beautiful blush that stains her skin when sheโ€™s flustered.

I love how affected she is by me.

I knew Mila was gorgeous when I saw her from across the street yesterday, but up closeโ€ฆ damn.

Sheโ€™s a stunner.

Easily the most beautiful woman Iโ€™ve ever seen.

And I get to see her again on Friday.

I came to the bookstore today hoping to see her even though I knew there was a good chance that she wasnโ€™t available, but I had to shoot my shot. Iโ€™m fucking relieved she isnโ€™t with somebody. It would have sucked if I put myself out there only to find out I didnโ€™t stand a chance. Iโ€™ll admit, part of me canโ€™t believe she agreed to go out with me, but Iโ€™m happy she did.

Halfway back to the garage, reality sets in.

What was I even thinking going in there?

Mila is sweet as hell, far too good for a roughneck like me.

Iโ€™m a felon for fuckโ€™s sake.

No. Fuck that.

My criminal record doesnโ€™t define me.

I have to stop letting my past rule my life. Iโ€™m more than some guy who got locked up for trying to defend someone who didnโ€™t deserve it. I paid the price for my mistakes. I did my time and now I need to move on.

I deserve happiness as much as anyone else.

As long as Iโ€™m honest and donโ€™t try to hide it, Mila doesnโ€™t seem like the type that would hold my past against me. Iโ€™ll be up front with her about it and let the chips fall where they may.

Iโ€™ve got a good feeling about her.

โ€œWhoโ€™s the girl?โ€ Bishop asks as I walk into the garage.

My brows dip low in confusion and I look around the bay, not seeing anyone. โ€œWhat girl?โ€

โ€œThe girl that put that goofy ass smile on your face,โ€ he says with a knowing look. โ€œOnly a woman can make a man smile like that.โ€

I hadnโ€™t realized I was smiling when I came in, but I feel one stretch across my face now.

โ€œHer name is Mila.โ€

โ€œFrom the bookstore?โ€

โ€œYou know her?โ€ I ask, closing the distance between us.

โ€œI know of her.โ€

At my look of surprise, Bishop rolls his eyes. โ€œYou said it yourself yesterday, Cross. Abbott Ridge is a small town.โ€ He turns his attention back to the engine heโ€™s working on. โ€œPass me that wrench.โ€

Knowing which one he wants without asking, I grab it and hand it over.

โ€œThe real question isโ€ฆโ€ He pauses to look at me. โ€œHow do you know her?โ€

Reaching behind me, I pull the book out of my back pocket.

Chuckling, Bishop shakes his head. โ€œShould have known. Canโ€™t believe you read that girly shit.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t hate,โ€ I tell him. โ€œThis girly shit just got me a date with perfection on Friday night.โ€

He eyes the book. โ€œWell, hell. Maybe I need to pick up a new hobby. Milaโ€™s a pretty girl.โ€

โ€œFind your own pretty girl, Bish,โ€ I say, popping him on the back of the head with the book. โ€œMila is mine.โ€

Fucker laughs. โ€œItโ€™s like that?โ€

โ€œDamn right itโ€™s like that.โ€ I drop the book on top of the tool cabinet and grab a beer from the fridge. โ€œI saw her yesterday when I was leaving the tattoo shop.โ€

โ€œNo doubt a gorgeous girl like that grabbed your attention.โ€

โ€œHell yeah. Would have talked to her yesterday, but she was on her way out. Almost got discouraged when I watched her drop into the passenger seat of a sweet ass ride, but decided to take a chance anyway.โ€

โ€œBlack Chevelle?โ€ he asks, glancing up.

โ€œYeah.โ€

He nods. โ€œHer younger brother, Mateo.โ€

โ€œDamn, Bish,โ€ I say, dropping my ass onto a stool. โ€œYou really do know everyone in this town. Bet you got all the good gossip.โ€

Bishop snorts. โ€œI ainโ€™t got shit. Mateo spent a lot of time here. Rented one of the bays so he could restore that beauty of his. He had the know-how, but needed somewhere to do the work.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d love to get my hands on that car.โ€

โ€œGood luck with that. He wonโ€™t let anyone else work on it. Not even me.โ€

That makes me chuckle. โ€œI respect that. Nothing more important to a man than his car.โ€

โ€œAnd his girl,โ€ he says, no so subtly turning the conversation back to Mila. โ€œWhere are you taking her?โ€

Prior to this update, the room had a series of steps leading to the different levels of recliners. Obviously, that would no longer work for the homeowner, so we chose to remove the steps completely, instead building a gradual slope with room to maneuver around each level of seating. Beyond featuring state-of-the-art electronics that will be easily upgradeable, everything in hereโ€”from the blackout window shades to the sound system to the recliners themselvesโ€”can be controlled through a single smart home phone app.โ€

She turned the camera to face her. โ€œDoesnโ€™t this look like a wonderfully cozy place to watch a movie or catch your favorite sporting event?โ€

She smiled into the phone camera, then moved back into the wide hallway leading to the library/office, her own favorite spot in the house.

โ€œYou can see here we have sliding pocket doors that open and close with the push of a button. We chose to replace the traditional doors in many of the spaces with these pocket doors, which gives more room for the homeowner to navigate, and we alsoโ€ฆโ€

Her words trailed off as she heard a sound behind her and turned to see a large, dark-haired man using a wheelchair, framed in the doorway.

He frowned, an expression she had become all too used to seeing there, during their few in-person interactions and their more frequent video conferences.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ he demanded. โ€œYouโ€™re not filming this, are you?โ€

Sage dropped her phone with an inward wince and stopped recording. Technically, this was still her job site, which meant she had full permission to check on the progress of the work until they handed the finished home over to the owner, who happened to be this man, former professional baseball player Mason Tucker.

With effort, she forced herself not to show any of her dismay. Out of all the clients she had worked with during her career thus far, Mason Tucker was the only one who made her palms sweat and her stomach feel knotted with stress.

โ€œMr. Tucker. Um, hi.โ€ She forced a smile, feeling awkward as hell and wishing she had waited until the contractor would be here to take a tour.

โ€œI havenโ€™t been here in weeks and wanted to document the progress that has been made since I visited last. I didnโ€™t see any vehicles outside and assumed everybody was gone for the day.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m parked in the garage of the guesthouse.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t even know you were in town. Have you been here long?โ€

The last she knew, Mason had been living in Portland, where he had once played for the same baseball team as another town resident, Spencer Gregory, who was married to Sageโ€™s friend Charlotte. Sage knew Spence and Mason had remained friends, despite life circumstances that had led to both of them retiring.

For a moment, she wasnโ€™t sure Mason would reply, then he finally shrugged. โ€œI wanted to be close as we started to wrap things up so I can keep an eye on things and be on hand if there are any questions or problems. My daughter and I moved into the guesthouse a month ago.โ€

Why hadnโ€™t her dad or Sam Delgado told her Mason was already living in Hopeโ€™s Crossing?

Beyond that, she suddenly thought, how in the world was he making the guesthouse work? That place wasnโ€™t at all wheelchair accessible, with three steps leading into the place, narrow hallways and no accessible bathroom like those she had designed for this main house.

Renovating the guesthouse was part of the master plan but not until all the work was finished on Wolf Ridge itself.

โ€œThat place is a mess. How are you getting around?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m managing,โ€ he said, his voice curt. โ€œI can still get around on crutches, as long as I donโ€™t have to go far.โ€

โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t have to go far, from one end of the guesthouse to the other. Itโ€™s tiny.โ€ She imagined a man Masonโ€™s size would make the space shrink to almost nothing.

โ€œIt works fine for me and Grace. Itโ€™s only a few more weeks anyway, right?โ€

โ€œI suppose.โ€

Sam Delgado had assured her when they spoke earlier that the renovations to Wolf Ridge would be finished shortly before Christmas.

Sage had to admit, she wouldnโ€™t be sorry to put the job behind her.

While she was thrilled with the way her designs had transformed the mountain estate, working with Mason Tucker himself was another story.

She tried to be compassionate. Whenever she grew frustrated with him, she would remind herself that Mason had endured the sort of tragedy that would have completely destroyed someone without his resilience. While she was only charged with renovating this house, Mason had to completely rebuild his life.

He had every right to be surly and uncooperative.

While she might know that intellectually, it was difficult to remember when she was dealing with yet another last-minute change order.

Still, he had superb taste and basically unlimited financial resources. In a few more weeks, when the job was finished, Wolf Ridge would meet his needs now and long into the future.

The home now featured a new indoor pool, spa and high-tech exercise room on the bottom level, two new elevators at either end of the house and heated floors throughout. Wolf Ridge also featured a kitchen that worked for people of any mobility level and wheelchair accessible bathrooms on each level, including the extensive ownerโ€™s suite on the second floor.

Sage loved everything about this house, from the skylights to the beams her dad had mentioned to the wider doorways and hallways. It was warm, luxurious, comfortable.

She wanted to show off her work to the world. The only trick would be convincing the intensely private Mason Tucker.

Faced with his glower now, Sage felt as if she faced a Herculean task.

She had to try, though, didnโ€™t she?

Her fledgling internet show had exploded in popularity over the past year, allowing her foundation and personal pet project to help far more deserving people than she had ever envisioned.

Sage could only imagine the vast number of viewsโ€”and thus ad revenueโ€”a video featuring Wolf Ridge would bring in. People would love a glimpse inside the house redesigned for the reclusive and private Mason Tucker.

The public still clamored to know everything it could about the former professional athlete who had endured so much physical and emotional pain.

If she could showcase Wolf Ridge on the Homes for All internet channel, she would also bring awareness to some of the issues and obstacles noninclusive design presented to those with mobility challenges.

She drew in a breath, not sure where to start. Yes, he would likely slap her down but she wouldnโ€™t know unless she asked, right?

โ€œThe progress while Iโ€™ve been overseas is amazing. I canโ€™t believe how different everything looks, with the finish work and the new flooring.โ€

โ€œSam and his subs have put in some long hours.โ€

โ€œIt shows. And Jean-Paul tells me heโ€™s going to have nearly all the furnishings ready to go in a few more weeks, except for a few custom pieces.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what he tells me.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t see any reason you and Grace canโ€™t move in before Christmas. How exciting!โ€

A shrug was his only response, which she supposed was about as eloquent as Mason Tucker could be.

She stuck her hands into the pockets of her wool coat.

He was going to say no. She knew it and braced herself for it.

โ€œThereโ€™s no easy way for me to ask you this so Iโ€™m going to come straight out with it.โ€ She drew in a breath. โ€œFor the past year, Iโ€™ve hosted a YouTube channel, Homes for All, which features projects with the kind of innovative universal design elements we have tried to incorporate here at Wolf Ridge.โ€

He raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

โ€œWhile itโ€™s called Homes for All, we feature commercial as well as residential projects. I hope to continue raising awareness of how limiting and even discriminatory some design practices can be for those who are, er, differently abled.โ€

He again said nothing, only continued to look at her out of those hard blue eyes that concealed his emotions completely.

โ€œI have poured so much energy into Wolf Ridge, and Iโ€™m absolutely thrilled with the way the house has turned out. Itโ€™s everything I dreamed and more. I feel like more people should see it. Donโ€™t you? I would absolutely love to feature your home on my channel.โ€

She held her breath, hands curled inside her pockets.

As she might have predicted, he didnโ€™t leave her waiting long for his answer.

โ€œHell no,โ€ he said with blunt finality, then turned away and started to roll back down the hall so abruptly she could only stare at him.

After a moment, she pursued him. This was too important to give up at the first obstacle. โ€œJust like that? You donโ€™t even want to hear the details?โ€

He paused and maneuvered to face her. โ€œWhy waste both our time? I donโ€™t need to hear the details. Whatever you have to say doesnโ€™t matter. My answer will remain a hard no.โ€

The man was impossible. Her grandfather Harry might have called him pigheaded, but Sage preferred the more diplomatic obstinate.

And yes, how could she blame him for that? Mason was trying to rebuild a life for himself and his daughter in Hopeโ€™s Crossing, away from the prying eyes of the tabloid press. She already knew he was an intensely private man. He had made her sign a nondisclosure agreement before even talking to her about what he wanted done at the house.

She might have been more surprised if he had agreed to let her feature his house on her channel.

Still, she had never been good at taking no for an answer. She could be every bit as pigheaded as Mason Tucker. She figured she had inherited that from Harry Lange himself.

โ€œWhat I love most about your home is how seamlessly we have managed to integrate the new design into the existing structure without altering the basic style and grace of the home,โ€ she said. โ€œIโ€™m sure you can agree that the changes will benefit everyone who lives here, not only you.โ€

โ€œSure,โ€ he said after a moment. โ€œYou definitely know what youโ€™re doing. The house is exactly what I wanted. That still doesnโ€™t mean I want the whole world peering in at the transfer bars in the shower or the damn lift I need to use so I can get in and out of my spa.โ€

Sage was so caught up in the first part of what he said, the unexpected praise coming from her difficult client, that she almost missed the second part.

โ€œThatโ€™s exactly what I try to showcase on my channel. When done right, universal design can blend with the overall style of a home or commercial property, small and sometimes barely noticeable changes but enough to make a huge difference to those who need them.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he said again. โ€œJudging by how seldom youโ€™re here, you must have other projects. You can focus on those.โ€

โ€œI have. You can watch the videos online. We have about thirty of them up now. But Wolf Ridge is the most ambitious residential renovation Iโ€™ve ever undertaken. Most people would never have poured the kind of resources you have into making such extensive changes to an existing structure. They would have sold the house as is and built a custom home somewhere else. Because of the location and the basic sound structure of the house, you chose to renovate instead. The results are beautiful, and I want the whole world to see it.โ€

โ€œAnd I donโ€™t,โ€ he said bluntly. โ€œI donโ€™t need to give the whole damn world any more reasons to pity me.โ€

A muscle clenched along his jaw, and Sage felt immediately ashamed of herself for her selfishness at wanting to showcase her best work here.

Her motives werenโ€™t completely selfish, she amended. Yes, she was proud of her work on Wolf Ridge. This project, more than any other she had been part of, might help her begin to emerge from her fatherโ€™s huge and well-earned shadow.

It wasnโ€™t easy being Jackson Langeโ€™s daughter and trying to find her own way in the same field as one of the worldโ€™s most brilliant architectural minds.

That was the very reason she hadnโ€™t taken Jackโ€™s surname, even after they reconnected. She still went by Sage McKnight, the name sheโ€™d always had. She didnโ€™t want to be known first as Jackson Langeโ€™s daughter, with the weight of all those expectations on her. She wanted to succeed on her own.

Beyond that, she was doing good work with Homes for All. She knew she was making a difference in peopleโ€™s lives, not only by changing minds about universal design but by changing lives.

Should she tell Jackson Lange that Homes for All was also the name of her foundation, funded by the ad revenue her videos generated online? The purpose was to help people who couldnโ€™t otherwise afford to make necessary changes to their living spaces when age or health issues impacted mobility.

No. She didnโ€™t want to guilt him into letting her invade his privacy by showcasing Wolf Ridge.

โ€œWill you at least think about it?โ€ she finally said. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to decide anything right this moment.โ€

He shrugged. โ€œI can think about it from now until Christmas. I wonโ€™t change my mind. My house, my decision. You can take all the pictures and video you want for your own personal use but if you post them online, Iโ€™ll sue your ass for breaking our nondisclosure agreement.โ€

He wheeled away without another word, leaving Sage to gaze after him with helpless frustration.

She hadnโ€™t really expected any other answer, but she had hoped.

Her watch alarm dinged, and she glanced down at the reminder she had set. She was supposed to be at her motherโ€™s bookstore and coffeehouse, Books & Brew, in ten minutes.

She quickly shot a few more images then walked back out into the December twilight.

Review:

Thayne’s newest is all you could want in a holiday read. Chock-full of small town charm, with likable characters and a heartwarming story, it’s tender, heartwarming, and brimming with emotion.

Mason is struggling with his new physical limitations, the loss of his wife and his career, being a single dad, and having his estranged mother come back into his life. It’s a lot and throwing in an attraction to his architect is making it even more complicated. But the more time they spend together the harder he finds it to resist her.

There’s also a secondary story of childhood friends who are struggling with letting the past control their present. Together with the main plotline, it helps to highlight Thayne’s feel-good story full of fortitude, grief, and forgiveness.

(Part of a series and can be read as a stand alone but returning readers will enjoy meeting old friends again.)

Review:

I felt for Tara every step of the way. She’s struggled all her life with the way her own mother and sister treat her, but the care Levi has always shown her captured her little girl heart and her feelings for him have only gotten deeper over the years. Then he breaks that heart by having a baby with her sister. But his total devotion to his daughter just adds to his appeal, which means getting over him is going to be harder than she ever imagined.

Levi may be an amazing dad but he really needs to work on his communication skills. Early on there were so many times I wanted to yell at him – I kinda get where he was going but he definitely made a muddle of things. If I were Tara I definitely would have been so confused and hurt. Once he steps up and takes a chance, though, things definitely get moving. He throws himself totally into the relationship with Tara, being what she needs him to be and respecting her, while also giving her the occasional push she needs.

Tara may have needed a little extra love and support to reach her full potential but once she does she owns it. And Levi’s heart. He may take a bit to realize it but once he does he gives her his all and it’s sexy as can be. Steamy, emotional, and entertaining, Always Her Love shows once again that Foster knows how to bring her readers characters to root for and a HEA that is worth waiting for.

(Can be read as a stand alone but there are a lot of characters from other books.)

Excerpt:

โ€œAre you sure this is a good idea?โ€ Maya helped Lucy pack boxes of the Fingersnug into a bag. โ€œIsnโ€™t there a risk that turning up at his house in Scotland makes you look like a stalker?โ€

โ€œI can see why you might be concerned about that and Iโ€™m not going to say it didnโ€™t cross my mind, but no. Firstly because Iโ€™m in Scotland anyway, doing a photoshoot for the Fingersnug along with reindeer and several influencers, and secondly because this is what Zoe told me to do. Iโ€™m simply following her advice. And itโ€™s not as if I havenโ€™t tried every other route first.โ€ Maybe she was overstepping a little, but sometimes you had to take a risk to get ahead.

Ever since Arnieโ€™s health scare sheโ€™d been working flat out to put together ideas for Miller Active. She was excited about her plan and desperate to get her proposal in front of Ross Miller before the competition snagged his attention. She was willing to take the chance that the whole thing could explode in her face. What was the worst that could happen? Heโ€™d slam the door on her, which wouldnโ€™t be pleasant but at least sheโ€™d be able to limp home knowing that sheโ€™d done everything she could to help Arnie and protect peopleโ€™s jobs.

โ€œWho is Zoe?โ€

โ€œRoss Millerโ€™s personal assistant. Sheโ€™s great. Sheโ€™s organized, and she knows everything. We went to that new wine bar near the river last night, andโ€”โ€

โ€œYou went to a wine bar with Ross Millerโ€™s assistant?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ Lucy tucked some of the festive โ€œpropsโ€ sheโ€™d bought into the bag. โ€œWeโ€™ve been talking every day for the past week, and weโ€™ve become friendly.โ€

Maya shook her head in disbelief. โ€œHow do you do it? If someone stands still for long enough, you befriend them.โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t hard. I like her. I took my proposal over to the office and we got chatting. Turns out sheโ€™s from Scotland, too, and she knows Ross from school.โ€

โ€œAnd he gave her a job?โ€

โ€œWhy not? Sheโ€™s brilliant. And who knows, maybe she threatened to reveal all his secrets if he didnโ€™t employ her.โ€ Lucy added two boxes of fairy lights to the bag. โ€œTheyโ€™re obviously good friends. Sounds as if they have one of those fun relationships full of banter where she scolds him, and he pretends to do as heโ€™s told. Can you pass me the snow globe?โ€

Maya handed it to her. โ€œGood friends? Or very good friends.โ€

โ€œNot romantic. According to Zoe, Ross isnโ€™t involved with anyone. He occasionally dates, but women tend to get frustrated by his focus on work. He actually forgot about his last date, left her sitting in a restaurant.โ€ She forced the snow globe into the bulging bag. Maybe it had been optimistic of her to think she could manage with the one bag.

โ€œNot the king of romance, then,โ€ Maya said. โ€œDoes Ross know that his assistant is revealing his entire personal life to strangers?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a stranger. Iโ€™ve seen her four times this week.โ€

May rolled her eyes. โ€œAnd no doubt by Friday youโ€™ll be godmother to her children.โ€

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t have children, although she would like to. Sheโ€™s dating William, but heโ€™s currently living in Edinburgh and she misses him horribly. William, it seems, is very slow to make a commitment so Zoe is thinking of proposing herself. We talked through a few strategies.โ€ Lucy tried to close the bag and failed. โ€œA little help, please?โ€

Maya pushed the sides of the bag together. โ€œNo offense, but since when did you become the expert on marriage proposals?โ€

โ€œI know a lot about the theory.โ€ Finally, Lucy managed to close the bag. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to travel the world to teach geography. Iโ€™m creative, thatโ€™s my job. I know how to make an impact. Also, I pay attention to what people want and need. Thatโ€™s the basis of successful selling and, in the end, thatโ€™s what weโ€™re doing. All the time. Every day. Iโ€™m going to be selling the idea of me to Ross.โ€

โ€œSo where does William fit into this?โ€

โ€œWilliam works in risk assurance so itโ€™s understandable that he wonโ€™t be given to impulse. He needs a little something to nudge him past that caution barrier. Fortunately Ross Miller closes the office for a week over Christmas, which means Zoe can go home, too.โ€ Lucy lifted the bag. โ€œThis weighs a ton. Nothing else is fitting in there.โ€

โ€œHe closes the office?โ€

โ€œYes. He goes home to Scotland to spend time with his family.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s nice.โ€

โ€œIt is. I like it when people appreciate family.โ€ Lucy lowered the bag back to the floor. โ€œI feel as if Iโ€™ve forgotten something. What else do I need?โ€

โ€œA whole lot of good luck and the bound copies of your proposal. You wanted two, is that right?โ€ Maya handed them to her. โ€œYou havenโ€™t discussed this with Arnie, have you?โ€

โ€œNo. He is supposed to be resting. No stress. You know what heโ€™s like. If I even mention this, heโ€™ll want to be involved.โ€ She knew sheโ€™d never forget the sight of Arnie being taken away in an ambulance. For a horrible moment sheโ€™d thought she might lose another person she loved, but fortunately it hadnโ€™t turned out to be as serious as theyโ€™d feared.

Arnie had been discharged with medication and a lecture on lifestyle.

He was keeping in touch with the office, but Lucy had given everyone strict instructions not to contact him.

The office felt strange without him there. Even the Christmas tree and the decorations couldnโ€™t make up for his absence. But if he rested now, hopefully heโ€™d be well enough to come back to work in January.

In the meantime she was holding the fort.

Maya gestured to the proposals in Lucyโ€™s hand. โ€œGood work, by the way. Clever. I think Ross Miller will be impressed.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s hope so.โ€ She grabbed some Christmas wrapping. โ€œDid you see the photo Ted sent round? The baby is gorgeous.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re not getting any sleep.โ€

โ€œI know. Ted says he watches the baby half the night to check sheโ€™s still breathing.โ€ Lucy knelt on the floor, cut the wrapping paper and measured a length of ribbon.

โ€œRibbon?โ€ Maya frowned. โ€œYouโ€™re not seriously gift wrapping the proposal?โ€

โ€œWhy not? Itโ€™s Christmas.โ€ She wrapped the document carefully. โ€œEven the most hard-hearted businessman canโ€™t help but respond to wrapping paper covered in cheerful robins, surely?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s why youโ€™re wrapping it? To fill his hardened heart with festive joy?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Lucy tied the ribbon and secured the label sheโ€™d handwritten in careful script. โ€œIโ€™m wrapping it in case something happens and Iโ€™m not able to deliver it to him personally. Itโ€™s Christmas, and they have a big family gathering every year.โ€

โ€œZoe again?โ€

โ€œNo. I read about it in that magazine feature I mentioned.โ€ Sheโ€™d pored over every page, envious of the oversize Christmas trees, the lush garlands adorning fireplaces and the curved bannister. โ€œIf I hand them a boring-looking proposal the chances are theyโ€™re going to forget about it. Who wants to read a boring document at Christmas? If I wrap it, then there is a good chance that at some point over the festive season itโ€™s going to be opened.โ€

โ€œPossibly by one very disappointed kid who is immediately going to throw a tantrum before tossing it out of the window.โ€

โ€œNo young children in the family, according to my research.โ€ She tucked the wrapped parcel carefully into her laptop bag, along with the spare unwrapped proposal.

โ€œPlease tell me youโ€™re not dressing as Santa when you drop it off.โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t planning toโ€”โ€ Lucy rocked back on her heels โ€œโ€”but now youโ€™re making me think.โ€

โ€œWell donโ€™t think. Youโ€™ve done enough thinking.โ€ Maya rested her hip on the desk and folded her arms. โ€œSo why didnโ€™t he go into the family business?โ€

โ€œRoss? I have no idea, and itโ€™s not relevant. I am not there to interfere with family politics. I am simply going to ring the doorbell and hand over my gift. Merry Christmas. Thatโ€™s it.โ€

โ€œYou should have put a copy of that marketing magazine in with the proposal. Cover girl Lucy.โ€

Lucy stood up and put the unused wrapping paper back on her desk. โ€œThatโ€™s one of those awards that we are all super proud of, but no one else in the world has ever heard of.โ€

โ€œBut youโ€™re the face of modern marketing. He might be impressed.โ€

โ€œOr not.โ€ Lucy glanced at her phone. โ€œI have an hour before my train leaves.โ€

โ€œThe sleeper. Iโ€™ve always thought that sounds romantic. Traveling on a train through the darkness, clickety-clack, clickety-clack.โ€

โ€œThere is nothing romantic about having a carriage to myself.โ€

โ€œMaybe it will be like one of those spy movies,โ€ Maya said, โ€œwhere the bad guy is lurking, waiting to throw you out of the window.โ€

โ€œAnd for that comforting thought, I thank you.โ€

โ€œYou should have taken some days for yourself while youโ€™re up there. Have a mini break.โ€

Lucy couldnโ€™t think of anything worse. โ€œIโ€™ve already booked my return journey the following night. All organized. Itโ€™s a flying visit.โ€

Even if she had the money for it, she didnโ€™t want to spend time in a hotel on her own at Christmas. How miserable would that be?

No, sheโ€™d spend the day taking creative photos of the Fingersnug with the reindeer herd as her backdrop, and then sheโ€™d deliver her proposal to Ross Miller on her way back to catch the train.

As far as she could see, there was nothing that could go wrong.

Gotta Be Bayou

Badges of the Bayou series

by Erin Nicholas

Blurb:

How do you get over a woman you never should have been, ahem, under in the first place?

Just when FBI special agent Spencer Landry had decided to forget about investigative journalist Maxine-Max-Keller and their one hot night together, there’s a threat made against her and Spencer’s protective instincts get all riled up. Again.

So now they’re shacking up on the Louisiana bayou and pretending to be in love so he can keep Max safe until the guy is apprehended.

Considering their chemistry and that he can not stop thinking about the gorgeous-and-doesn’t-know-it, smart-mouthed, bold-and-yet-vulnerable redhead, this could be a fun few days, right?

Nope. She’s all wrong for him.

And she hasn’t forgotten he can be kind of a jerk.

Sure, the naked-times are great, but he told her exactly what he wantsโ€” a bubbly, sweet school teacher who bakes him brownies and loves to cuddleโ€”and Max ain’t it.

Max not only doesn’t bake, no one has ever called her sweet. And cuddling? Shudder.

Plus his bossiness is super annoying for someone who’s been taking care of herself all her life. But now they’re stuck together and dammit, besides being hot and very good with his mouth, Spencer is pretty irresistible with baby goats, little kids, and attempts at baking. And don’t forget alpha-protective. All of which makes her stomach feel very swoop-y. No wonder her clothes keep falling off.

But this is a temporary situation and they’re only faking it. So falling for the guy is a terrible idea.

She really should have kept that in mind.

Excerpt:

Sheโ€™d fallen asleep on him.

Literally.

Well, her feet were on him anyway. Actually, her legs from the knees down.

Sheโ€™d started just propped against the opposite end of the couch, with her crossword puzzle book open on the arm. Sheโ€™d mostly focused on the puzzle, but heโ€™d noticed her smiling and even laughing a couple of times at the TV.

Eventually, sheโ€™d propped her head on her hand and just watched. Then her eyes started drifting shut. Then her head was on the arm of the couch.

But when she wanted to get comfortable, she got comfortable.

Sheโ€™d scooted down to rest her head on the couch cushion and stretched out. Including putting her feet in Spencerโ€™s lap.

Heโ€™d had to catch her heels in his hands to keep her from kicking him in the balls.

And then heโ€™d just held her feet, rubbing his thumbs along the arches of her feet, and absorbing the sound of her contented sigh and loving the way she cuddled deeper into the couch.

Heโ€™d wanted her to feel safe and be comfortable and relaxed.

Mission accomplished.

The woman was sound asleep.

At 8:30 p.m.

The episode ended and Spencer realized he didnโ€™t remember a thing from what heโ€™d watched. Heโ€™d been paying attention to Max.

Of course heโ€™d started with the way her soft cotton shorts molded to the curve of her hips and ass. The way the matching tank hugged her waist and breasts. There was no way he could have ignored that. He was drawn to this woman and the part that didnโ€™t confuse him was his attraction to her body.

Now, having those sweet curves within touching distance again and barely covered, absolutely drew his attention. But with her asleep, and him unable to really do anything, he also had the chance to simply study her up close.

Her eyelashes were pale and had a reddish hue. Of course they did. She was a redhead. But heโ€™d never thought about the color of a womanโ€™s eyelashes before. Now he was fascinated. Did she wear mascara? He was going to have to pay attention to see the next time she was awake.

She stirred, shifting, moving her feet against his hands and he stroked a hand up one calf. It wasnโ€™t perfectly smooth. There was just a slight prickle, but he didnโ€™t mind at all. In fact, he wanted to feel that against his thighs and hips as she wrapped her legs around him. It was real and he wanted to feel her legs in every stage from freshly shaved to havenโ€™t-had-a-chance-for-days.

Wow, she was truly asleep. He should make her go to bed.

โ€œMax?โ€ he asked softly.

She didnโ€™t even wiggle.

โ€œMax?โ€ he asked a little louder, squeezing her foot gently.

She just breathed in deeply, then out.

He should just carry her into bed. He could just scoop her up and take her into the bedroom.

Spencer shifted her legs so he could stand. Then he leaned over. She was on her side, so he pushed gently against her shoulder, rolling her to her back. She went with a sigh, one hand moving to rest on her chest. Perfect. Spencer slid an arm under her knees and one behind her back.

And everything was great until he started to lift.

She came awake suddenly. She kicked her legs, flailed her arms, and her head lifted instinctively to look around. Her forehead hit Spencer in the chin. Hard.

His head snapped back and his teeth clamped down on his tongue.

โ€œFuck!โ€ he swore in surprised pain.

โ€œAhhh!โ€ she yelled.

She was still kicking and waving her arms and he unceremoniously dropped her one foot back onto the couch cushions.

โ€œMax! Itโ€™s me!โ€

She kicked out, her shin connecting with his thigh.

That fucking hurt too.

โ€œMax!โ€ He pinned her arms down against the couch. โ€œMax! Itโ€™s Spencer!โ€

Her eyes were wide and not fully focused.

She just yelled again. โ€œAhhhhh!โ€

Dammit. The cottage next door was going to think they needed to call the cops.

Which was Zander.

Spencer did not want Zander showing up here, grinning and smirking and writing up a report about how Spencer had tried to sweetly carry Max to bed and sheโ€™d thought he was attacking her.

โ€œMaxine!โ€ he said sharply, putting a leg across hers to keep her from kicking and, against his better judgement, placing a hand over her mouth. โ€œStop it. Itโ€™s me.โ€

Her eyes flew to his as he put his face directly in front of hers.

โ€œItโ€™s Spencer.โ€

She suddenly went still. Her gaze focused and she stopped moving and he felt her pull in a long breath.

He waited another few seconds, making sure that she realized who was holding her down.

Slowly he removed his hand. โ€œOkay?โ€ he asked.

She drew in another long breath and blew it out. She nodded. โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œHoly shit, Max.โ€

โ€œWhat happened?โ€

โ€œYou were sleeping like the dead, so I decided to carry you into the bedroom. And you turned into the Tasmanian devil.โ€

โ€œWell, I’m not used to people picking me up in the middle of the night.โ€

That made him chuckle. โ€œIt’s not even 9 p.m.โ€

โ€œWellโ€ฆ still.โ€

He liked that she was at a loss for words. That was unusual.

Slowly, he became aware of the fact that he was pinning her to the couch. With almost his entire body.

In spite of the fact that sheโ€™d been fighting off an intruder in her imagination and heโ€™d been fearing for his manhood, his eyes, nose, and jaw, it didn’t take long for his body to register that this felt really nice.

The couch was big enough for the two of them to lie together. He wasn’t entirely on top of her, but almost half of him was pinning more than half of her to the cushions.

โ€œI, umโ€ฆ didnโ€™t mean to squash you. Self-preservation instinct.โ€

She smiled. โ€œYou’re not squashing me.โ€ Her voice was soft and a little breathless.

Their gazes locked. โ€œI did this, honestly, to keep you from hurting me or yourself. But mostly me.โ€

She wet her lips and nodded. โ€œI believe you.โ€

โ€œSo, I could probably get up now. You seem a lot more calm.โ€

โ€œFunny, I don’t exactly feel calm.โ€

His heart kicked against his rib cage. A moment ago sheโ€™d been ready to claw his eyes out. The moment before that sheโ€™d been so deeply asleep that she hadn’t realized he was even there. But now, her gaze was hot and she was breathing fast, and she was definitely not wearing a bra with this pajama set.

Spencerโ€™s entire body responded. โ€œYou fell asleep really fast. And very deep,โ€ he said, his voice husky.

โ€œI often fall asleep on the couch. Never that deeply, though. I guess I felt really safe with you.โ€

Damn, he liked that. He felt the corner of his mouth curl. โ€œUntil I tried to pick you up.โ€

โ€œSorry. Instinct.โ€

โ€œHonestly the cop part of me is very glad that your instinct is to fight hard when someone does something unexpected.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ She gave a little nod. โ€œI guess that means you just need to be sure I’m expecting anything you do.โ€

He nodded slowly and his gaze dropped to her mouth. โ€œGood idea. For instance, if I was going to kiss you, I should make sure that you knew that.โ€

She nodded. โ€œRight.โ€

โ€œMax.โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€

โ€œI’m going to kiss you.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€

Review:

Nicholas is the best at bringing zaniness, steam, and emotion to her stories. There were laugh-out-loud moments, more than a few of sweetness, and quite a bit heat, but also a few things that made my heart hurt.

Max pretty much has been on her own all her life. Left alone a lot as a kid, she had to learn to fend for herself. It’s turn her into a very capable adult, but it also means that she has trouble letting people in. Then she meets Spencer. Spencer who has a very definite idea of what his ideal partner will be like and she’s nothing like Max. Only he can’t stop thinking about her. Wanting her. And she’s feeling the same.

Both Spencer and Max have a few things to work through and I have to say one of my favorite things is how they resolve their issues. I love when an author avoids the idea that love can fix anything. Instead, Max and Spencer handle things in a mature & healthy fashion which made this reader very happy. I can’t wait to see what is in store for the rest of the badges.

(First book in a spinoff series, can be read as a stand alone but there are a lot of people to meet for the first time and figure out how they are all related. Even after reading most of the books, it was difficult for me a time or two ๐Ÿ™‚ )

The Book Haters’ Book Club

by Gretchen Anthony

Blurb:

Filled with humor, family hijinks, and actual reading recommendations, The Book Hatersโ€™ Book Club features a messy group of people trying to save their local Indie bookstore —ย  and who might just save each other along the way. This heartwarming, wildly entertaining novel is both a celebration of found family, and a love letter to booksellers and librarians everywhere.ย

Elliot, co-owner of Over the Rainbow Bookshop in Minneapolis, started The Book Hatersโ€™ Book Clubโ€”a newsletter of reading recommendations for the self-proclaimed โ€œnonreaderโ€ โ€“ because he believed that it only takes the right book to turn a Book Hater into a Book Lover. Now, after theyโ€™re all reeling after Elliotโ€™s sudden death, his business partner, Irma, has agreed to sell Over the Rainbow to a developer. When Irma breaks the news to her daughters, and Elliottโ€™s romantic partner, Thom, they are aghast. Especially since Irma wonโ€™t explain why sheโ€™s so intent on selling.

Irmaโ€™s daughters and Thom conspire to save the bookshop. Even if it takes some snooping, gossip and (minor) sabotage, they wonโ€™t give up without a fight.

Excerpt:

Thom Winslow swept through the glass doors of Vandaveer Investments a titan. โ€œGood afternoon,โ€ he announced to the receptionist, his voice bold, his tenor unwavering. โ€œIโ€™m here for the Over the Rai-iin-bowโ€”โ€ He faltered as the word โ€œrainbowโ€ indiscriminately, and most unpleasantly, stuck to his throat like jelly, leaving him no choice but to clear it with a sickening โ€œHUUCCHH!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m here for the meeting about the bookstore.โ€ This he said with the voice of a defeated man, aware that his too-narrow shoulders and pigeon neck were rapidly deflating in shame. Damn his rehearsed confidence.

The receptionist barely paid attention, his focus on the tablet attached to his hand. (Was it glued there?) โ€œYouโ€™re meeting in the Lake Minnetonka conference room. Iโ€™ll escort you.โ€

Irma Bedford, co-owner of the Over the Rainbow Bookshop with Thomโ€™s recently deceased partner, Elliot, was already inside, waiting. Seeing her, Thom felt a second blow, his vision for todayโ€™s meeting all but stomped dead. Heโ€™d arrived early to be the first one in the roomโ€”heโ€™d read it was a power moveโ€”and yet here she was, extending her hand.

โ€œThom.โ€ She stood when he entered. โ€œTheyโ€™re running a few minutes behind.โ€

She was rumpled. He hadnโ€™t expected that. Of the few things  Thom appreciated in Irma, it was her easy chic, a style that never failed to impressโ€”well-ironed jeans, crisp white shirt, flawless foundation and knockout lips. Today they were an unfortunate shade of coral.

โ€œHere.โ€ He plucked a tissue from a box on the side table. โ€œLipstick. On your tooth.โ€

She accepted it and turned discreetly to fix herself. There was a stain on her back pocket, the flowering blue swell of ink that would never come out, and before realizing, he said, โ€œIโ€™ll walk behind you when we leave so no one can see that spot on your slacks.โ€ It was a kindness she perhaps did not deserve, and yet he couldnโ€™t help himself.

Irma smiled, gratefully. โ€œBefore they come,โ€ she began to say but hadnโ€™t finished before James and Trevor Vandaveer, father and son, walked through the door and started the handshaking and back-patting portion of the afternoon. Trevor, the younger, pulled out chairs for Thom and Irma, as if they were elderly, joints too swollen with arthritis to do it themselves. Or in Thomโ€™s case, enfeebled by a set of useless-looking shoulders.

โ€œWill your daughters be joining you, Irma?โ€ Trevor asked.

โ€œLaneyโ€™s flight was delayed.โ€ She nodded toward the glass wall behind him. โ€œBut hereโ€™s Bree now.โ€

Bree Bedford exited the elevator, armpits sweating through her shirt, the voice in her head hyperventilating about what a stupid mistake sheโ€™d made by not having worn a blazer, as usual failing to avoid even one of the mini disasters that, together, comprised her average day.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry to keep you waiting.โ€ The clock on the wall above the crystal water pitcher that looked too fancy to touch read 2:58 p.m., two minutes early. But the energy in the room said she was embarrassingly late. She slipped silently into a chair next to her mother and pulled her planner from her purse for notes. The clasp snapped loudly, echoing against the roomโ€™s hard surfaces. โ€œSorry. Again.โ€

She and Trevor Vandaveer had graduated high school together, and twenty years on, he looked just as much the tailored son of privilege as he always had, wearing a suit that probably cost more than she was comfortable thinking about. His father, whose first name she kicked herself for not being able to remember, remained the only one standing. She sensed he spent too much time in the sunโ€”though his cheeks and forehead were shiny and taut as if fresh from the dermatologist, the wrinkles on his hands betrayed his age, all but undoing the medical illusion up top.

โ€œWe waiting for more?โ€ he barked.

โ€œJust Laney,โ€ Irma, Bree, and Thom said in unison. Irma added, โ€œShe texted me a few minutes ago. Sheโ€™s on her way from the airport.โ€

It had been upon learning that Laney was flying in from California that Bree began to feel anxious about what she might learn at this meeting. Their mother had only said, โ€œWith Elliot gone, Iโ€™ve enlisted an outside firm to help me make some decisions about the Rainbow.โ€ Bree was more or less the bookshopโ€™s assistant managerโ€”it made sense for her to attend. Her sister, Laney, though, never flew in for store matters. In fact, she almost never flew in for personal matters, either. Their momโ€™s best friend and business partner, Elliot, had died several months ago and Laney hadnโ€™t flown in for his funeral. She hadnโ€™t flown in when their momโ€™s late-in-life boyfriend, Nestor, passed away unexpectedly last year, and she hadnโ€™t spent a Christmas or Thanksgiving in Minneapolis for as long as Bree could remember. Laney didnโ€™t come home for things, and yet she was coming home for this.

The receptionist opened the door a third time. โ€œLaney Hartwell,โ€ he announced.

Before stepping through, Laney pulled her baseball cap low and made a wish to whatever god, genie, or fairy watching over her that Old Man Vandaveer would keep on talking. The sooner this was over, the better. She was tired. She didnโ€™t need to be here. It was too big of an ask.

โ€œWhat are you doing over there?โ€ Mr. Vandaveer saw her choose a seat in the corner and, grossly offended, slapped his notes on the table with a violent, outsize thwak!

She rubbed at the back of her neck, her hair at full attention. โ€œIโ€™m trying not to interrupt.โ€

โ€œLaney.โ€ Her mother tapped the chair beside Bree. โ€œThereโ€™s plenty of room right here.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a big table,โ€ Old Man Vandaveer barked, a man showing off his territoryโ€”big office, big voice, big dude-jewel ring rapping on his big tableโ€™s glass top. โ€œAlright, brass tacks.โ€ He returned to his agenda. โ€œMs. Bedford, on behalf of Over the Rainbow Bookshop, LLC, has entered into a contract for sale of said business with Vandaveer Investments. Per her request, weโ€™ve agreed to brief you all, her stakeholders, on the terms.โ€

Trevor handed each of them a slick folder adorned with the firmโ€™s green-and-gold logo. Laney accepted hers, placed it unopened on the table, and set her brain free to wander. It was strange, flying in from her grown-up life in Oakland, only to come face-to-face with a kid sheโ€™d graduated with, now an adult with a tailored suit and a haircut too slick for his conservative, monochromatic tie.

โ€œLetโ€™s begin with the Terms of Sale,โ€ Trevor said. The words entered the air, floated around the room. Laney didnโ€™t try to catch them.

โ€œโ€˜โ€ฆwill be paid by the Seller in full upon closing in the form of certified check, agreed to by both Buyer and Sellerโ€ฆโ€™โ€

Bounce. Bounce.

He had a tiny blue dot above his lip. Sheโ€™d thought it was an ink spot, a rogue pen leaving its mark. But the more she watched, the more she became convinced. Trevor had a perfect dot of a mole above his lip.

โ€œโ€˜โ€”six weeks,โ€™โ€ the mole said.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry?โ€ Breeโ€™s voice cut through Laneyโ€™s foggy thoughts.

โ€œYes, July 1,โ€ Trevor said. โ€œWhen Irma signed the Statement of Intent, we agreed to an expedited, six-week timeframe. Weโ€™ll sign the final closing documents at the end of the month.โ€

โ€œBut thatโ€™s only three weeks from today.โ€ Bree double-checked the date. She was correct. โ€œYou sold the shop three weeks ago and youโ€™re just telling us now?โ€ A panicked chill seized her; she didnโ€™t think she could lift her arms. โ€œWhat about all our customers? What about the neighborhood? Weโ€™re the only independent bookstore left in Lyn-Lake.โ€

โ€œI admit the timeframe is less than ideal.โ€ Her mother did not sound remotely apologetic. โ€œI needed time to get Laney here.โ€

Bree dug her fingers into the edge of the glass tabletop to keep from crying. Three weeks until her life came to a crashing halt, until the bookshop that had first been her refuge, then family, and then career, ceased to exist. โ€œI donโ€™t understand.โ€ Tears slipped from her chin to the table. โ€œHow can you close the Rainbow?โ€

Irma didnโ€™t respond.

โ€œIf youโ€™ll turn to page seventy-nine,โ€ Trevor said, apparently anxious to move the meeting along, โ€œyou may understand more after hearing the details.โ€

โ€œTake a look at the offer price,โ€ his father said. โ€œThat oughta dry your boo-hoos.โ€

Thom pushed the tissue box down the table toward Bree. That Irma was only now telling her daughters of the sale did not surprise him. She was a beauty with fangs, and heโ€™d known from the very beginning it was dangerous to get too close. She and the bookshop had consumed Elliot, and just as a new chapter of their lives was to begin, just as Elliot had agreed to cut back on his work there, to consider retirement, to refocus on his life with Thom, heโ€™d died. In a flash. Gone without warning or goodbyes.

Thom turned to the correct page and looked for the price Irma had received for the beloved Over the Rainbow, aware that no amount of money would ever dull the resentment heโ€™d sharpened for the woman and her bookstore over so many years. Trevor was now spewing gibberish, a tactic meant to blunt the impact of what he could see with his very own eyes: Irma had sold Elliotโ€™s lifeโ€™s work for practically nothing.

โ€œOh, Mom,โ€ Bree cried. โ€œIs that all the Rainbow means to you?โ€

Laney flipped her page, assuming there had to be more on the other side. โ€œSo, is this just the first installment or what?โ€

Thom felt his jaw, followed by stoic resolve, go slack. โ€œIrma,โ€ he hissed.

The woman didnโ€™t flinch. โ€œThese are the terms the Vandaveers offered, and Iโ€™ve accepted them,โ€ she said, her back an iron rod. โ€œIf you have questions, please direct them to our hosts.โ€

Thom looked at the sale price again, convinced theyโ€™d misplaced a comma.

Bree shifted from being quietly tearful to a sobbing soap opera star.

Laney checked her watch.
