ย Can a wounded hero let go of the past?

Excerpt:

โ€œJustrelax and floatโ€ฆโ€

Trey hadnโ€™t felt this relaxed in months. He closed his eyes, allowing his body to become one with the water. Regaining this small sense of movement was a defining moment for himโ€”he felt a sense of freedom heโ€™d thought was long gone.

โ€œYouโ€™re doing fantastic,โ€ Gia murmured.

At every encouraging word and smile from her and Giaโ€™s obvious faith in him, Treyโ€™s heart turned over in response. There was no fighting it any longer. He wanted something more than friendship from her. Heโ€™d been crushing on her at first like before, but what he felt now defied words.

However, reality sank in. What could he offer Gia?

Yetโ€ฆthe way she looked at him motivated him to take a chance with her. After all, she was his biggest cheerleader and she often reminded him that he could continue to improve his quality of life, including having a family.

At the end of the aquatic therapy session, Gia assisted him back into his wheelchair.

He decided to take the leap. He didnโ€™t just want to be her friend. He wanted more. He wanted Gia.

โ€œHow do you feel about mixing business with pleasure?โ€

She dried herself off. โ€œIโ€™m not sure what you mean by that.โ€

His eyes traveled over her face, studying her expression. โ€œWill you have dinner with me? As in a date.โ€

Gia gave a slight nod. โ€œIโ€™d love it.โ€ She handed him a towel. โ€œBut I canโ€™t unless you fire me, or I quit. Itโ€™s not ethical for me to date my patients.โ€

โ€œThen youโ€™re fired.โ€

Grinning, she responded, โ€œIn that case, I have a replacement in mind for you.โ€

He was surprised. โ€œWere you planning to quit on me?โ€

Gia laughed. โ€œNo, I simply wanted to be prepared in case something happened to me, or if we decided to be more than friends.โ€

โ€œWe have gotten pretty close,โ€ Trey said. โ€œIโ€™ve tried to keep it professional, but I really care for you.โ€

โ€œI feel the same way,โ€ Gia responded.

Her words thrilled him. Clearing his throat, he stated, โ€œIf you donโ€™t mind coming to the

house later, I can order some food from the cafรฉ. I really donโ€™t enjoy eating alone. I never really have.โ€

โ€œHow about I cook something?โ€ she suggested. โ€œIโ€™ll have to check your refrigerator to see what I have to work with.โ€

He chuckled.
