Seducing the Warrior

To Love a Wicked Warrior series

by Laura Shipley

Blurb:

A soldier losing his vision. A lady fleeing for her life.  An unlikely coupleโ€ฆ bound together in desire, need, and love.

The man in the shadowsโ€ฆ

Injured in battle and his sight failing, Royce Davis has been dwelling in darkness since his return to England, in more ways than one. Consumed by bitterness and pain, Royce is determined to make his way in the world alone. But when a fiery-haired vixen takes up his offer of employment, his heart is awakened by a woman whose beauty enthralls him and whose touch ignites a yearning he cannot resist.

The woman who brings the lightโ€ฆ

On the run from a ruthless enemy, Lily Moore finds refuge in Royce Davis’s home. Refusing to be put off by her employer’s coarse manners, Lily senses the real man behind the facade…as well as a desperate passion she finds herself longing to answer.

The darkness that cannot be escapedโ€ฆ

Royce refuses to believe he could ever be worthy of a woman like Lily. But when the past catches up with his new assistant, he will move heaven and earth to keep her safe. Royce must prepare to do battle with a cunning adversary while fighting against his own blindness. Lily never meant for Royce to be caught up in this deadly game. But now what began as a business arrangement has become something much more. Can a bargain born of necessity lead them to a fated love? Or will a madman see them parted forever?

Excerpt:

Lily didnโ€™t answer right away, but he heard her footsteps move closer until he knew she was right next to him. He put his hand out and brushed her shoulder. Lily let out a tiny cry before she fell into his embrace. Royce put his arms protectively around her. They clung to each other.
โ€œI have been alone for so long, dealing with this. Sometimes I feel like I am in an abyss of my own making. Fear has been the driving force in my life for so longโ€”fear of the unknown, so Iโ€™ve been trying to accomplish all I can before itโ€™s too late.โ€

She caressed his face. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to be alone.โ€ Lilyโ€™s voice trembled. โ€œYou have people who care about you, like Mr. Templeton, Percy,โ€ she paused for a second, โ€œand me. I understand that at times things may seem hopeless, but that is when you need to lean on others the most, and I know that may be difficult.โ€

He leaned into her soft touch. How had this extraordinary woman come into his life, just when he needed her the most? Since coming home from the war, Royce had felt adrift. Lilyโ€™s presence anchored him, gave him a beacon to hold on to, and by God, he would hold her close tonight if she let him.

โ€œWhat did I do to deserve to have you in my life, sweet Lily?โ€ He placed his hand over hers and kissed it.ย

โ€œI might ask myself the same thing. Before coming here, the last few months, I had been alone and scared. Fearful of everyone and everything. Ever since I have been here, I have found friends and the happiness that has eluded me for quite some time. I feel like I belong.โ€

Royce tightened his grip on Lily and pulled her closer. โ€œYou will always have a place here, for as long as you wish. I ask for no promises and I give none.โ€ On that, at least, he had to be honest.
โ€œI understand.โ€

โ€œI may not give you a promise, but I can give you a choice. Stay with me tonight. I will do whatever you askโ€”I am yours for the commanding. All I ask is that you share this room with me. I cannot bear another night without you.โ€

Author Info:

Laura Shipley is an indie author who writes Victorian historical romance with dark, brooding heroes and strong-willed, feisty heroines. Her love of romance began the first time she โ€œborrowedโ€ one of the motherโ€™s books and was hooked. While she reads all genres, paranormal romance is a close second to historical.

When she is not writing, Laura enjoys spending time with her husband and children. She has never met a piece of chocolate or a glass of wine that she did not like. Her third addiction is Starbucks, and the never ending need for caffeine to keep the creative juices flowing. She prefers movies over tv, too much of a time commitment, but likes spending time outdoors including hiking and rafting.

Her greatest joy is transporting readers to another time and place with her books, and to have her readers fall in love with the characters just as much as she does. Returning home stirs up all of the old memories and heartache Grace Holland would rather forget, but now that sheโ€™s back, she finally has a chance to put her demons to rest. Just For A Moment

A Return to Hometown Romance

Blue Collar Romance Series

by Kate Carley

Blurb:

From author Kate Carley comes a blue collar, return to hometown romance with heat, heart and a happily ever after.

For Grace Holland, coming home to Oak Bend isnโ€™t easy. The journey stirs up old memories, including the heartbreaking reason her family left town. But now that sheโ€™s inherited both her granddadโ€™s old Victorian home and a World War II aircraft that heโ€™d been working desperately to restore, Grace is ready to face down the demons of her pastโ€”if the people in Oak Bend will let her.

Aaron Beckettโ€™s life is a balancing act. His aircraft mechanic business is booming and being a single parent of a young daughter keeps him on his toes. But when Gracie Jane Holland, granddaughter of his late friend, steps into his aircraft hangar, Aaronโ€™s well-managed life soars out of control, and every free thought begins and ends with that beautiful blonde.

Even with plenty of excuses to avoid each other, sparks fly while they work together to restore an old fighter plane. And just for a moment, it feels as if theyโ€™ve found a deeper, more sustainable connectionโ€”until well-meaning half-truths threaten to tear them apart.

When her past and present collide, nothing can prepare Grace for the storm of hatred that pours down on her. Ruthless words leave her questioning whether staying in Oak Bend and putting her heart on the line is worth the pain. Can this small town ever be home again?

Escape to Oak Bend, where blue-collar hotties work hard and love even harder, especially when it comes to landing their happily ever after.

Excerpt:

โ€œBeck, Iโ€™ve heard so many great things about you. Itโ€™s nice to finally meet you.โ€

โ€œPeople been talking?โ€ Beck chuckled again, but he was studying her face, assessing her with those stunning eyes.

โ€œMy grandfather, Win Ross. Iโ€™m Grace Holland, and he left instructions that I should reach out to you. That you would have something for me.โ€

Beck tilted his head a bit to the left, a tender expression passing over his face. โ€œGracie Jane. I figured youโ€™d be stopping by here at some point. I was sorry to hear about Winโ€™s passing. Everyone in town loved him. And I felt blessed to call him my friend. God, I miss him every day.โ€

โ€œThanks for saying that, Beck. I miss him, too. And itโ€™s just Grace now. I think my granddad was the only one still calling me Gracie Jane.โ€

โ€œHe did.โ€ Beck nodded. โ€œHe talked about his granddaughter all the time. He was so proud of you and how you started that company of your own.โ€

As he spoke about her granddad, Beckโ€™s eyes softened and his voice warmed. Talking about the most important man in her life with someone sheโ€™d just met felt bittersweet. But according to her granddad, Beck was one of his dearest friends.

โ€œI remember how proud he was when I told him about my new business venture.โ€

โ€œA website design business. Whatโ€™s it called again?โ€

โ€œHolland Designs.โ€

โ€œRight.โ€ He bobbed his head. โ€œWin said you had more work than you could do in a lifetime.โ€

โ€œThat sounds about right.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry I didnโ€™t make it to the memorial. I searched for information but never found anything.โ€

Grace bit her lower lip and then shook her head. The memorial had been a point of contention between her and her mother. โ€œThere wasnโ€™t one.โ€

โ€œYeah, he always said he didnโ€™t want anything like that, but I wondered if his family would have one anyway.โ€

โ€œNo. My mom and Iโ€ฆWe just wanted to do exactly what he wanted.โ€ Graceโ€™s mother had an entirely different interpretation of what Edwin Ross had wanted. โ€œAnd his wish was to not have people standing around, staring at him.โ€

Beck chuckled softly. โ€œI remember Win saying that.โ€

Several unpleasant tasks still remained to be accomplished today, and they dampened the joy Grace generally experienced reminiscing about her granddad. โ€œMy granddad left something here for me. Do you have that?โ€

โ€œRight.โ€ Beck pointed toward the corner of the enormous hangar. โ€œItโ€™s in my office.โ€

With quickened steps, Grace kept pace beside Beck. โ€œThis place wasnโ€™t here before. I mean, when I used to live here, there was the airstrip, but there werenโ€™t many hangars. Maybe two or three.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s become a thing. Owning a plane. Faster than the ferry if youโ€™re crossing Lake Michigan. Lots of people around the county can afford it. And none of the other towns in the area have an airstrip.โ€

Stopping at the door to his office, Grace watched while Aaron walked to his desk and lifted a heavy-looking silver paperweight shaped like an airplane. He plucked a key from underneath and went to a tall wooden cabinet in the corner. With a twist of his wrist, he unlocked the door. From her position outside his office, she could see the small black safe. He entered a code, and the door swung opened. Shifting the contents around, he produced a manilla envelope. Then, Beck reversed his steps until he was standing in front of her again, presenting her with the envelope.

The strained expression on his face was exactly how Graceโ€™s heart felt in the moment. A deep acheโ€”one of loneliness and sorrowโ€”created by the loss of a precious soul. Slowly, she reached for the envelope.

โ€œThank you, Beck. Thank you for keeping my granddadโ€™s wishes safe for him. For me.โ€

โ€œYeah, no problem.โ€ Beck pinched his lips together and glanced around before meeting her eyes again. โ€œSo, are you ready for your tour?โ€

โ€œTour? Now? No.โ€ Grace shook her head, fighting a choking feeling at the back of her throat. A tourโ€”wasting time, wandering aroundโ€”wasnโ€™t part of her plans for today. Not even for a few minutes. โ€œNo. I donโ€™t need a tour. But thanks for this.โ€ She lifted the envelope to indicated she had all she needed at the moment.

Again, he tilted his head the slightest bit to the left and then gave a gruff grunt.

โ€œSuit yourself,โ€ he said. Like a switch had been flipped, his tone turned dark and sarcastic, and Grace had no idea why. โ€œSee ya around, Gracie Jane.โ€

Iโ€™ve been a car maker, a consultant, and even a senior executive at a large retailer running strategy. Born in England, spent time in the U.S. and Japan, before ending up in Canada where I met my own, personal hero โ€“ all six and a half feet of him. Both of us are scorpios! Yeah, I know! Should have checked the astrological signs earlier, but somehow it works for us. We have two amazing kids, who I either could never part with or could easily be convinced to sell on e-bay.

Excerpt:

Just as I approach the corner, Iโ€™m hit on the shoulder by another body. Iโ€™m pushed to the wall, and the mountain of books in my hands crashes to the floor. The red folder holding my English term paper lands on top of the heap.

โ€œWatch where youโ€™re going!โ€ the person who bumped says.

She doesnโ€™t have the decency to stop, but by the sound of her giggles, I know who it is. And thereโ€™s no way the schoolโ€™s most popular senior would give me the time of day. I sigh and drop to the floor to pick up my things. My heart starts to beat erratically because if thereโ€™s one thing I knowโ€”wherever Candace is, heโ€™s never too far behind.

Iโ€™m proven right. A pair of black boots enters my line of vision. Cooper Stevens. Those are his boots. He was wearing them the very first time I saw him, and I remember wanting to be swallowed up by the ground. The only thing that saved me from total embarrassment was the fact that I know someone like him would never notice someone like me.

I hold my breath while he approaches and quickly turn to my books. Please leave. Please leave. Please leave. I busy myself arranging my books. I wonโ€™t stand up until he walks past me. Only he doesnโ€™t. He drops down to my level and grabs my red folder. Instead of handing it to me, he opens it and starts to look through the pages.

I finally find the courage to look at him, and our eyes lock. For the first time ever, I notice the hazel flecks around his brown eyes. I look away and drop my head, and because this is the day from hell, my glasses slide off my face and land on the floor.

We reach for them at the same time, and his large hand ends up covering mine. I let out a small sound, and I say a silent prayer that he didnโ€™t hear it. I note the contrast of our skin tones, his white hand covering my brown one before I pull mine away. He lifts my glasses and brings them to my face. Iโ€™m as still as a statue while I look down at the linoleum floor. He moves closer and slides the glasses back onto my face. I take a deep breath and bask in the smell of his leather jacket mixed with his fruity shampoo.

When he gets the glasses on my face, he moves his hands behind my ears to make sure they are secure.

โ€œYou okay?โ€ he asks. He lifts my chin and forces me to look at him.

Like a deer in headlights, all I can do is stare.

โ€œBe careful next time, Laces,โ€ he whispers.

I lick my dry lips. โ€œUm, my name isโ€”โ€ The words get locked in my throat. I grab my books and finally stand up. He stands right along with me. When weโ€™re both upright, he takes a step closer.

โ€œYour name is what?โ€ he asks. He hands me my folder, and when I take it from him, his fingers touch mine.

โ€œUm, my name isโ€”โ€ I clear my throat and try again. The entire time he stares at me with an expression I canโ€™t interpret. โ€œMy name isnโ€™t, umโ€”โ€ I never get a chance to finish my sentence.

โ€œCooper!โ€ Candace yells in the hallway. She runs over to us and grabs the sleeve of his leather jacket. โ€œCome on! What are you still doing here with her?โ€ She points at me without bothering to look in my direction. โ€œLetโ€™s go. You did your good deed of the day. Maybe you should tell her to run a flat iron through that hair.โ€ The entire time he was being dragged away, his head was turned in my direction, until they turned the corner and he disappeared.

Review:

When a romance starts with a little white lie, you can expect that things are going to get a bit out of hand and Luna delivers with a deft hand, mixing in humor and fun with a big dose of drama. And does she give her readers drama – family drama, romantic drama, personal drama … all mixed together with sweetness and heat to deliver a satisfying HEA.

Both April and Brody are relatable – they experience doubt about their choices and their worth, but they are good with each other. They are supportive and caring, there when the other needs them, and they understand & accept each other faults and all. They make a perfect couple, they just haven’t realized it yet. Good thing a week at a destination wedding might just give them a chance to see what’s been in front of them all along.

But it isn’t going to be easy. First they have to deal with April’s super-competitive (and super-suspicious) family, resentments that have been simmering for a lot of years, and moments of self-doubt as their feelings begin to deepen. Tensions run high, emotions spill over, and old wounds have a chance to be healed but only if they are willing to stand up and ask for what they want.

(Part of a series, but easily can stand on its own.)

Federal K-9 Series

by Tee Oโ€™Fallon

Genre: Romantic Suspenseย

Release Day Blitz: September 20th

Blurb:

Ambushed and left for dead, U.S. Secret Service K-9 Officer Markus York is on the mend and laying low in a safe house while his team tracks down his attacker. But Markus isnโ€™t good at sitting still. Even with his K-9, Ghost, for company, he gets restless and decides now is the perfect time to do some repairs around the houseโ€ฆand inadvertently tears open his wounds.

Fresh out of a bad relationship that ended after a car accident left her with limited mobility, freelance accountant Cassidy Morgan has sworn off men. At least, thatโ€™s the plan. Until a frantically barking dog leads her to a neighborโ€™s house where she finds a mysterious man out cold and bleeding on the floor…and mumbling things like โ€œno, theyโ€™ll find meโ€ when she tries to call an ambulance.

Yeah, thatโ€™s not at all concerning.

Despite Markusโ€™s surly attitude, Cassidy senses thereโ€™s something else at work beneath his rugged, keep-your-distance exterior. Whatever it is, itโ€™s sexy as hell.

With someone still trying to kill him, Markus doesnโ€™t want an innocent to get hurt, let alone take care of him.

If only his dog wasnโ€™t crazy in love with her.

If only the chemistry between Markus and Cassidy didnโ€™t explode whenever they were in the same room.

If only Cassidy wasnโ€™t a target now, too.

Excerpt:

Fear snapped her into action and she threw her legs over the side of the bed. No sooner had the alarm kicked on than it abruptly kicked off. The barking eased to an occasional snarl. What she heard next frightened her more.

Voices. Lots of voices, and she knew whose they were.

Her entire family was downstairs. All six of them.

And Markus is alone with them.

With her heart racing at what she could only imagine in her worst nightmares was happening downstairs, she snatched up her clothes then opted for the more expeditious optionโ€”her robe.

Still tying the robe around her waist, she all but ran from the bedroom. Halfway down the stairs, she froze. Heat scorched her face.

Markusโ€™s expression was grim as he stood in front of the keypad in nothing more than his jeans and a gun tucked into the small of his back. Ghost sat obediently beside him, with only the slightest rumble coming from the back of his throat. Her father, mother, two brothers and sisters stood in front of the open door.

โ€œWhatโ€™s doing, sis?โ€ her oldest brother, Jimmy, asked in a frosty tone.

Wearing only her robe, it was pretty darned obvious exactly what she and Markus had been doing.

โ€œMerry Christmas, Cassidy,โ€ her younger sister, Kaitlyn, said, flipping back her unruly head of red curls and grinning as she cast an unabashedly appreciative eye at Markus. โ€œMerry Christmas to you, too.โ€

While she totally understood her sisterโ€™s sentiments because, well, Markus was hotter than hell in his bare feet and the top snap of his jeans still undone, it irked to have her sister drooling over her new boyfriend.

Boyfriend?

She shook her head to clear it. Deciphering what she and Markus were exactly would have to wait. Especially after last nightโ€™s conversation. Right now, there were more pressing matters at hand. Like keeping her father and brothers from pounding on Markus all at once.

Cassidy took the rest of the stairs in record time, stepping in front of Markus and Ghost as if they needed protection. He might not know it, but he does. โ€œWhat are you all doing here?โ€

Sean, the second oldest sibling of the family, tapped a finger on his watch. โ€œItโ€™s ten oโ€™clock, Cass. On Christmas Day.โ€

She gasped. Oh my gosh.

Her father pursed his lips as he glared at Markus. โ€œWe were worried about you, lass,โ€ he said in the same thick Irish brogue that hadnโ€™t diminished much, even after decades of living in the U.S.

Jimmy crossed his arms. โ€œYouโ€™re always the first under the tree. When you didnโ€™t show at nine on the button, we were surprised.โ€

โ€œWhen you didnโ€™t show by nine fifteen,โ€ her older sister, Brianna, chimed in, โ€œwe got a little worried.โ€

โ€œBy nine thirty,โ€ her mother added in a lilting brogue and coming to wrap an arm around her shoulder and give her a good squeeze, โ€œwe decided to come by and check on you. You can blame me for that. I insisted.โ€

Then and there, she made a New Yearโ€™s resolution to collect every single one of her house keys from every single member of her family so this would never, ever happen again. โ€œIโ€™m sorry to have worried all of you, but you could have called or at least texted.โ€

โ€œBetween all of usโ€โ€”Sean swept his arm to encompass the familyโ€”โ€œwe probably called ten times.โ€ He pointed to her phone which was right where sheโ€™d left it last night. On the kitchen counter.

She smacked a hand to her forehead. โ€œYou did call, didnโ€™t you?โ€

As if sensing there were no words he could say to pacify her family at finding a half-naked man and a snarling dog in her house, Markus wisely remained silent. She couldnโ€™t be sure whether the slight upturn of his lips was a grimace or a smile. Given the awkwardness of the situation, sheโ€™d go with grimace.

Her father arched a brow. โ€œCare to introduce us, lass?โ€

Excerpt:

I should have known the moment I saw her that this was no coincidence. A hot crazy lady randomly appears in my house? Not fucking likely. This has Mom’s fingerprints all over it, and the keys clutched in the blondeโ€™s hand are the nail in her coffin. I sigh. The woman is eyeing me like I’m a rabid dog about to strike. Or at least, thatโ€™s how sheโ€™s looking at me now. I caught the flash of heat in her gaze when my towel dropped a moment ago.

Groaning again, I lean against the doorframe and wonder what I did to deserve this. I’ve spent a long day completing work on a brick fence. My back aches, and all I want is to crack open a beer and watch hockey.

“So?” The blonde clasps her hands together, fidgeting. She’s pretty, if a bit skittish. Her moss-green eyes dart around the kitchen, returning to me every few seconds as though she’s wary of taking her attention off me for too long. “What’s going on?”

I nod toward the keys in her hand. “Those belong to my mother. She owns the house next door, which is the one you actually rented.”

“Oh.” Her slim shoulders slump in relief, and her curls bounce. “Thank goodness for that. It’s all a big misunderstanding.”

I laugh dryly. “Itโ€™s no such thing.”

A furrow forms between her brows. “What do you mean? Surely she just gave me the wrong set of keys.”

“If only.”

She seems baffled by my cryptic comment, and I sigh, already able to tell that she’s the type who’s curious enough to stick around until I explain everything.

“Mom intentionally sent you here,” I say, figuring I may as well get the awkwardness out of the way. I’m sure it’s not the only time she’ll be subject to Mom’s match-making machinations if she plans to live next door. She has a wholesome, sweet vibe that Mom will just eat up.

Yeah, I’m going to be dodging this woman for the foreseeable future.

“She hoped we’d run into each other, and that I’d be smitten with you. She set us up.”

“Oh.” This time, there’s a whole other level of meaning to the word. But then she cocks her head, and the furrow deepens. “I wouldn’t have thought you needed to be set up.” Her gaze rakes over me once again, and I can’t help but puff out my chest. It’s been a long time since anyone looked at me with such blatant appreciation, and I can tell she doesn’t even realize she’s doing it, or else she’d be mortified.

“I don’t,” I reply firmly, and her eyes snap up to mine. A delicate, pink flush journeys down her neck. Damn, I need to get rid of her before I actually do start to find her charming. “Here. I’ll get you my key for the place next door, and you can give me that one.” I nod at the key in her hand. She drops it on the counter.

“I’m so sorry about this.” She wrings her hands, looking awkward as fuck. “I didn’t mean to just walk into your house and make myself at home.”

“I know you didn’t,” I assure her. “I’m going to come closer now, is that okay?”

She nods, but her eyes remain on me as I enter the kitchen and head for the key hook by the fridge. I remove the one for the rental and replace it with the key she left on the counter, then offer her the one she actually needs. Our fingers brush as she takes it, and something jolts in my chest. Shaking it off, I snatch my hand away and check that the towel is still secure. The last thing I need is to give her another peep show.

“That key will open the front door of the house next door. Hold onto it for now, and I’ll get Mom to drop by with the proper key tomorrow.”

“I can do that.” She smiles, and I resist the urge to fall back a step, because it lights up her entire face, elevating her from pretty to gut-wrenchingly beautiful. “I don’t want to put you out any more than you already are.”

“Don’t worry about it.” Despite my frustration, I find my lips curving. “It’s not you I’m angry at.”

Her expression softens. “Please don’t be too mad with Nadine. She seems like such a nice person, and I’m sure she only wants to make you happy.”

Damn, she has a point. But whether her intentions are good or not, itโ€™s going to stop me from giving Mom a piece of my mind. She needs to know it’s not all right to hand out my house key to total strangers just because she wants grandbabies.

Excerpt:

Everyone on Knockbridge Lane had a different theory about Westley Mobray. It was the first thing Adam Mills heard about as he introduced himself around last week, when he and August moved in.

The eight-year-old McKinnon twins next door said he was a vampire. Their parents, Darren and Rose McKinnon, scoffed at that, but said he could be a witch. Marisol Gutierrez three doors down insisted sheโ€™d seen him skulking around the neighborhood at night, hunting for animals to sacrifice to the devil. A teenager at the end of the street reported that anyone who looked him in the eyes would be hypnotized, and anyone who touched him would turn to stone. Mr. Montgomery on the corner just said freak.

Westley Mobray was never seen before sunset, though mysterious packages arrived on his doorstep often. He never spoke to anyone and never waved hello. And late at night, the windows of his run-down house glowed an eerie green.

At least, thatโ€™s what they told Adam.

So when he saw the man in question through the twilit haze of his own front windowโ€”with his daughter in towโ€”he was understandably startled. Especially since heโ€™d thought she was playing quietly in her room.

Heโ€™d slammed two coffees to prevent it, but heโ€™d been asleep. The kind of light, unsatisfying sleep he often fell into when he had a moment of quiet. Which was something that didnโ€™t happen that often as the newly single parent of an eight-year-old.

His insomnia had been pretty bad since the divorce, and worse since they moved back to Garnet Run, where he was the only one responsible for Gus.

The knock at the door jerked him out of that strange sleep, and he scrambled for the door, stubbing his toe in the process, so that when he yanked it open he was biting back the kind of words that he tried with varying degrees of success not to say in front of Gus.

He focused on Gus first. She was all in one piece and was even smiling. It was her I did something bad and delightful smile, but a smile was goodโ€”at least when on a child who seemed to have been forcibly dragged home by an irate stranger.

โ€œWhere is your coat?โ€ is what came out of Adamโ€™s mouth.

Sometimes he tried to remember what it was like when he talked about things like the composition of his next shot, which restaurantโ€™s tiramisu he preferred, or the latest cozy mystery he was reading.

Now he said things like โ€œWhere is your coatโ€ and โ€œDonโ€™t take that apartโ€ and โ€œIf you donโ€™t stop making that sound I might have to throttle you.โ€ Okay, he didnโ€™t say the last one so much as think it. Often.

โ€œItโ€™s not that cold,โ€ his wonderful, brilliant daughter said, her lips only vaguely blue.

Adam counseled himself to breathe.

Once heโ€™d determined that Gus was all in one piece and frostbite wasnโ€™t imminent, he turned his attention to the man whoโ€™d brought her home.

โ€œUm,โ€ he said intelligently.

Westley Mobray was tall and severe, with shaved dark hair and strong dark eyebrows over piercing blue eyes. Those eyes were narrowed slightly, either in anger orโ€”if the neighborhood rumors were to be believedโ€”because he never went outside when there was the slightest bit of light still in the sky, as it would, of course, burn him to ash.

โ€œShe broke into my house,โ€ he said. His voice was low and rough with disuse.

โ€œSheโ€™s eight.โ€

Excerpt:

Facing the door, his mother had noticed his entry and now called to him, her eyes as large and disbelieving as the young maidโ€™s. The sound of the truckโ€™s running motor grumbled in with the cool breeze. The door to the veranda was open, as were all the windows in the tastefully furnished living area.

She shouldnโ€™t look surprised. She had known he was coming. Manny had left a message for her before heโ€™d boarded his private jet. Heโ€™d figured she must have heard it as sheโ€™d sent the driver to fetch him.

Then again, she was likely shocked that he had shown up. She hadnโ€™t expected him to heed her summons. And what did that say about him?

That youโ€™re a failure of a son, maybe?

He scowled at the thought and fixed his attention on the scene before him.

His mother stood with the help of a woman who had her back to Manny. He assumed it was another maid. That was the wrong assumption.

โ€œAmalโ€ฆโ€ Manny breathed her name. It felt too long since heโ€™d allowed himself to think about her. A whole year, to be exact.

If heโ€™d known they would cross paths so quickly he wouldโ€™ve arranged for his mother to meet him elsewhere. Perhaps in his old bedroom. Sheโ€™d likely furnished it for him, in the hope that he would opt to stay with her rather than check himself into a hotel.

But it was difficult to think about his accommodation when his mother was approaching him with Amal.

He flinched as they neared, his instinct roaring at him to flee. His heart, a battering ram, drummed so loud he feared that Amal would hear it. That she would know how easily she continued to affect him.

Curiosity kept him rooted. But he was seconds from storming out of the house to spend his first day here in a hotel.

Only the flash of emotional pain in his motherโ€™s wet eyes cooled his indignation. Halima Ahmed Adan didnโ€™t shed tears lightly. Only two instances came to his mind before this: when his father had died last year and when Mansur had announced his plan to leave for America on a college scholarship at the impressionable age of seventeen.

But she was crying now, her shawl forgotten where sheโ€™d left it on the ornately patterned floor cushions.

โ€œHooyo,โ€ she said, and the Somali term of endearment wrapped itself around his heart. It meant mother, and by choice he hadnโ€™t had one this past year, for reasons he was still ashamed to contemplate.

Moved by her tears, Manny stepped into her open arms and sank into her embrace.

She pressed her mouth to his ear. โ€œI missed you.โ€

โ€œI missed you, too,โ€ Manny murmured.

Over his motherโ€™s shoulder, he met Amalโ€™s eyes. Her face free of makeup, her tawny, reddish-brown skin glowed as if freshly scrubbed. She wore a neutral expression. Her midnight-blue silk veil was styled to match her dress. Snug around her chest and curvy hips, its flowing design was meant to discourage the kind of heated thoughts slipping into Mannyโ€™s head unbidden.

Squeezing his mother tighter, Manny eased his hold when she gasped and gave a small laugh. Heโ€™d almost forgotten he was hugging her.

โ€œForgive me,โ€ Manny mumbled, releasing his mother.

When his hands dropped to his sides again he flexed his fingers, the lingering feel of her warming his gut and falling over him like a comfort blanket. It was easier to hold on to the grudging anger.

Noting where his attention was directed, his mother grasped Amalโ€™s hand and pulled her closer. โ€œHave you forgotten Amal?โ€ she asked.

Like he could forget Amal Khalid.
