Flipping Love You

Boys of the Bayou Gone Wild series

by Erin Nicholas

Blurb:

He’s the tattooed bad boy her mama warned her about.

She’s his hot mess–but mostly hot–next door neighbor.ย

Until a two-night-stand gives them the surprise of a lifetime…

Jillian Morris is a workaholic who forgets to watch the time. And to eat. And to change her shoes. And to keep even a house-plant alive. And to have any kind of a personal life.

Now an eccentric millionaire has left her eight million dollars. And eight penguins. Yes, real live penguins. She’s a wildlife vet who specializes in penguins, so that makes sense. Kind of. She can, and does, keep penguins alive and well. She now just has to move them cross-country to her friend’s new animal park.

So if anyone deserves a one-night (or two) stand with a hot, younger, tattooed bad boy on a motorcycle, it’s her. Or so Jill tells herself when Zeke Landry flips his bike in front of her motel.

If only she’d known who he really was.

And that he was the fall-hard-and-fast type.

And the protective type.

And that one night would turn into more like nine-months of being …sigh…very personal.

Fall in love today!ย

Excerpt:

Heย  lifted a hand to run it through his wet hair.

Her eyes followed the motion, seemingly riveted on his arm. He wasnโ€™t sure if it was the tattoo or what exactly. But he did know that Jillian was fascinated with his ink. She had traced all of it with her fingers and tongue last night more than once. And he had a lot of ink.

โ€œIโ€™m the guy whoโ€™s remodeling your house.โ€

Her eyes widened. โ€œWeโ€™re going to be neighbors.โ€

He let his grin grow slowly. โ€œYup.โ€

She tipped her head back and groaned.

But it wasnโ€™t one of the hot oh-my-God-yes groans sheโ€™d been giving him last night. This was more of oh-crap groan.

โ€œYouโ€™re clearly not as excited about that as I am,โ€ he said dryly.

Her head came up and she met his eyes. Now there was no roaming over his half naked body. She shook her head. โ€œIt just feels complicated to live next door to the guy Iโ€™m hooking up with once a month.โ€ย

He was confused. โ€œWeโ€™re hooking up once a month?โ€

โ€œWell, that was what I was going to propose anyway. Friends with benefits, you know? After last night I thought that could be kind of fun.โ€

โ€œThat would be fun. Very, very fun,โ€ he said. โ€œBut why only once a month? Iโ€™m up for that kind of fun way more often.โ€

โ€œSure. But then it turns into more like dating or a relationship or something rather than just getting together for hot sex.โ€

โ€œAnd I take it the relationship and dating thing is something youโ€™re trying to avoid?โ€

โ€œVery much so. And living next door to you means that weโ€™ll see each other occasionally and since youโ€™ll be saving me from alligators on a regular basis, we could potentially turn into actual friends. And that makes the hooking up even more complicated.โ€

Having the sun up hadnโ€™t made him feel any less attracted to, slightly confused by, surprised by, and definitely amused by this woman. โ€œBut friends with benefits has friends right in the title.โ€

This all sounded good to him. Having a neighbor he could get naked with whenever the urge struck, who didnโ€™t want anything else from him, sounded pretty great.

โ€œIโ€™m just really not interested in a relationship,โ€ Jill went on. โ€œIโ€™m not good at them. And I donโ€™t really have time for them. And I donโ€™t put the effort into them, which ends up bothering the other person after a while. Which is understandable. Iโ€™m not blaming anyone. I just really like to have everything laid out and everyone on the same page. And I like sex. It would be really perfect to be able to have amazing sex, but only when itโ€™s convenient.โ€

Zeke gave a soft snort. Convenient hot sex. It really did sound pretty amazing.

โ€œIf you just want to walk through my door, only wearing a robe and nothing underneath to save time, Iโ€™m not gonna kick you out, cher,โ€ he told her. He was half-teasing. But only half.ย ย

She finally gave him a hint of a smile. โ€œI can just show up on your front porch anytime I want?โ€

He reached up and cupped the side of her head. He brought her in close and put his mouth against hers. โ€œAny freaking time.โ€

Review:

I’ve featured a lot of Erin Nicholas’s books, but have only managed to read a couple. Don’t ask my why, I’ve really enjoyed the ones that I have read. Andย Flipping Love Youย is no different. Her characters are quirky, charming, and fun. The plot is interesting, the sex is steamy, and the ending is satisfying.

Jill is adorable in her efforts to keep her life outside of her penguins as uncomplicated as possible. Her solitary, independent life has worked for her until now but moving to Autre puts her in the path of the Landrys and their loud, boisterous, loving hearts. Especially, one particular Landry – sexy, funny, irresistible Zeke. It doesn’t take her long to learn that things are done a little bit differently on the bayou … and realize that maybe that’s not so bad.

Nicholas’s newest is a humor laden, relatively drama free, sizzling romance that is a perfect summer read. Returning readers are sure to love the chance to catch up with old friends and see Zeke meet his match. (But if this is your first visit to Autre, like me, you can easily keep up. Although you may be tempted to get ALL the books, like me ๐Ÿ™‚ )

a fake relationship romance

Single Dad’s Romance series

by Allie York

Blurb:

Iโ€™m Sebastian Keller and Iโ€™m a workaholic.

Multi-million-dollar companies donโ€™t run themselves and I work hard to keep mine at the top. Befriending a kid was never on my agenda, but the second I set foot into my new apartment, heโ€™s there to show me the ropes. When his foster family canโ€™t keep him anymore, my choice is clear. The only thing I need to make him part of my life is something money canโ€™t buy. A girlfriend.

Iโ€™m Stevie Summers and Iโ€™m barely scraping by.

I was on the right track. I had a fiancรฉ, a job, and a degree. Until my fiancรฉ cheated, and my mom died. Now Iโ€™m back at home scrambling for work and trying to pay my dadโ€™s bills. I can forget about my love life entirely. Until a blast from my past comes into my life with an offer, Iโ€™d be stupid to refuse. Play his girlfriend. In return, he pays the bills. Iโ€™d be stupid to say no, and even stupider to fall in love.ย

Excerpt:

I have to look like a freaking fish, opening and closing my mouth over and over. Brown hair, hazel eyes, that face that not even time can make me forget. โ€œHoly shit! Sebbie?โ€ Talk about a blast from the past. I look the man in front of me up and down. The last time I saw Sebastian Keller, he was eighteen, gangly, and had acne, and I was madly in love with him. The Seb in front of me is definitely not a kid anymore. Heโ€™s at least six-foot with a chiseled jaw for days and is rocking the gray sweatpants like a porn star. Thereโ€™s definitely dick print there. And Iโ€™m not unimpressed. Oh, my god, stop looking at his junk.

โ€œStevie. Wow.โ€ He breaks our mutual silence, and my eyes snap up from perusing his body. Face. Yes. Focus on his face. Hazel eyes, a little stubble, a swoop of dark hair on his forehead. Yup. Still Seb standing there. I take stock of the features one more time just to be sure and come to the same conclusion. Sebastian is my delivery, and time was good to this man. He grew up real nice. Heโ€™s checking me out too, but like a gentleman: heโ€™s staring at my face, those eyes I know so well searching my face for something. I think back to right before I got out of my car and try to figure out what he sees right now. My eye makeup was on point at the beginning of the night, but Iโ€™ve worked a whole shift at the coffee shop and delivered ten meals since then. My hair isโ€ฆ I probably shouldnโ€™t think about it. The ponytail it started in is probably lopsided and messy, but nothing I can do about it now.

โ€œI take it this is your dinner since youโ€™re in front of the only penthouse I see?โ€ I offer the food and hold it between us. After way too long, he takes it very slowly like he may spook me if he moves too fast. The way my heart is hammering tells me this might be true.

โ€œYeah. Thanks.โ€ His hand wraps around the bag, and I scope it for a ring. Nothing. Interesting. We keep staring at each other, and my hand falls uselessly to my side. โ€œDo you want to come in?โ€ As soon as he says it, Sebโ€™s brows furrow like heโ€™s surprised himself.

โ€œI, uh, no. I donโ€™t want to bother you.โ€ I shake my head and take a step back. I am not emotionally stable enough for this, and Iโ€™m not wearing lipstick.

โ€œRight. Youโ€™re working. Sorry.โ€ Seb winces, or tries to smile, I canโ€™t tell.

โ€œNo, youโ€™re it. For now.โ€ Good job, Stevie, now you donโ€™t have an excuse to leave.

โ€œThen come in for a second. Iโ€™m starving and need to sit down after that run. I canโ€™t believe youโ€™re here.โ€ Then I get a real smile and know for sure that this sexy man in front of me is the same Seb from my childhood. That smile does the same thing now that it did fifteen years ago. My face gets hot, and I chew my bottom lip.

โ€œYeah. Okay. Just for a second.โ€ I nod, trying to figure out why I just agreed to this. I smell like fried food, dogs, and coffee. Not a good combo, and Iโ€™m sure I look as tired as I am, but my stupid feet donโ€™t get the memo, and they do the opposite of what my rational brain is saying. Seb tips his head for me to follow him in.

Excerpt:

Chapter One

Ivey Anders shoved back a wayward curl and gently secured the dog against her body so it couldnโ€™t move while her tech, Hope Mage, carefully clipped away the twisted wire. The poor thing, a stray by the looks of it, had gotten itself tangled pretty tightly and one hind leg was in bad shape. Ivey wanted to get it to the clinic where she could properly assess the damage.

Mud caked the fur, making it difficult to find any other injuries just yet, but there was one astounding fact Ivey couldnโ€™t ignore.

Behind her, the homeowner groused that the dog had likely been stealing eggs from his chicken coop.

Voice calm, temper mostly in check, Ivey said, โ€œYou didnโ€™t hesitate to call me, did you, Marty?โ€ It was well-known that Marty was not a fan of dogs, or cats for that matter, and mostly considered them a nuisance. However, theyโ€™d come to an agreement some time ago. Marty, who owned a fair amount of wooded acreage, was supposed to call her if a stray showed up, and she, as the local vet, would take care of the โ€œproblemโ€ for him.

Laura, his wife, was quick to say, โ€œI called.โ€ Defiant to Marty, she added, โ€œSoon as I heard the poor thing, in fact.โ€

Which didnโ€™t mean much. The animal might have been there for hours. Possibly more than a day, though Ivey couldnโ€™t bear the thought of that.

โ€œSheโ€™s pregnant, you know.โ€ Refusing to take her eyes off the dog and unwilling to raise her voice since it might frighten the animal more, Ivey said, โ€œIf she took an egg, it would have been from starvationโ€”and you already know I would have compensated you for it.โ€

Affronted, Marty grumbled, โ€œI wasnโ€™t worried about one egg, just donโ€™t want to lose my chickens.โ€ He cleared his throat. โ€œIf it helps any, I was out here this morning and she wasnโ€™t caught then. Afternoon I watered my garden, and thatโ€™s why thereโ€™s so much mud. So I doubt she was hung up there more than a few hours.โ€

The fist around Iveyโ€™s heart loosened just a little. โ€œThat helps tremendously, Marty. Thank you.โ€

More times than she could count, Ivey had taken on problems with stray animals who needed special love and care. It didnโ€™t matter that sheโ€™d been working as a veterinarian for years now, seeing all manner of hurt, neglected or just plain ill animals. She still loved them all, and when one hurt, she hurt with it.

โ€œNo thanks necessary,โ€ Marty complained, his tone gruff with insult. โ€œNot like Iโ€™d let an animal suffer.โ€

Ivey had a feeling their definitions of suffer varied a bit, but she realized this mattered to him, and she was too grateful to quibble so she just nodded.

Almost got it,โ€ Hope murmured, and with one last clip, the wire loosened. โ€œThere.โ€ Fingers gentle, she disentangled the dogโ€™s leg, exposing a painful wound.

Ivey murmured to the small animal all the while, cooing softly, petting and holding her secure. The second she was able to sit back on the muddy ground, she pulled the dog into her lap. With her face close to the top of the dogโ€™s head, she whispered, โ€œThere now, thatโ€™s better, isnโ€™t it? Weโ€™ll get you all fixed up, I promise.โ€

โ€œHere.โ€ Slipping off her zip-up hoodie, Hope offered it to Ivey to wrap around the dog. โ€œDo you want me to get the carrier?โ€

Busy swaddling the dog, careful not to jar her, Ivey shook her head. โ€œShe doesnโ€™t weigh more than ten or eleven pounds. Iโ€™ll carry her to the truck and weโ€™ll see how it goes.โ€ Feeling mud seep into the seat of her pants, she realized she couldnโ€™t get up without letting go of the dog. Lifting a brow at Hope, she said, โ€œA little help?โ€

โ€œOh sure.โ€ Hope caught her under one elbow, and Laura hurried forward to take the other, giving her the leverage she needed.

Marty stepped back to avoid getting muddy.

Carefully, the two women got Ivey on her feet. The thick mud was heavy on the seat of her pants, dragging on her stretch jeans that had loosened throughout the day. At least her rubber boots wouldnโ€™t be ruined. Since they treated all sorts of animals, including those on farms, she and Hope each kept a pair at the clinic.

โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€ Plodding forward, Ivey led the way to the truck. Halfway there, the dog started panting. Concerned, she hastened her step, not at all worried about getting mud on the truck seats. โ€œNo need for the crate. Just get us back to the clinic.โ€

Picking up on her angst, Hope ran around to the driverโ€™s side and got the truck on the road in record time. โ€œEverything okay?โ€

โ€œNot really, no. Somethingโ€™s wrong.โ€

โ€œWhat should I do?โ€

Poor Hope. A sick cat had kept them an hour past closing, and then Marty had calledโ€ฆ โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€ Ivey barely took her gaze off the stressed dog. โ€œDo you think you could assist me at the clinic?โ€

โ€œOf course I will! You donโ€™t even have to ask.โ€ Frowning, Hope muttered, โ€œDid you think Iโ€™d drop you off with a dog in distress? Tell you good luck?โ€ She snorted. โ€œHave I ever done that?โ€

She and Hope were close enough that Ivey knew sheโ€™d inadvertently insulted her. โ€œNo, you havenโ€™t. But itโ€™s Friday night after a very long day.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s Friday night for you, too, you know.โ€

โ€œWhat a sad situation for us both.โ€ Despite her worries, Ivey chuckled. โ€œMost women would have plans, and yet we never do.โ€

โ€œYou have Geoff.โ€

Ivey made a face. โ€œLot of good that does me.โ€ Likely Geoff was settled on the couch already, watching sports or playing a video game. The excitement had left their relationship a long time ago, so she doubted heโ€™d even notice her absence.

For her part, Hope never dated. That bothered Ivey a lot, but she loved Hope enough that she would never pry.

Smiling at her friend, Ivey said, โ€œIโ€™m glad I wonโ€™t have to do this alone.โ€

โ€œNot ever,โ€ Hope vowed. โ€œEven if by some miracle I ever do have something worthwhile lined up for the weekend, Iโ€™d still be here for you, okay?โ€

Her friendship with Hope meant so much more than any other relationship Ivey had, including her lackluster romance with Geoff. โ€œSmartest thing I ever did was hire you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so glad you did,โ€ Hope whispered. โ€œOtherwise we might not have become friends, then where would I be?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s just agree that weโ€™re better off together.โ€ Though Ivey was ten years older than Hope, theyโ€™d still hit it off from the start, meshing together as if theyโ€™d been lifelong friends. Where Ivey was take-charge and sometimes a little too outspoken, Hope was an intent listener with an enormous heart.

Ivey often wanted to challenge the world, and Hope, sadly, wanted to hide from it.

Or more accurate, she wanted to hide from any interested men.

Hope had an affinity with animals, plus a gentle but sure touch. She was never squeamish, but she exuded sympathy. Ivey valued her. The clients loved her. And the animals trusted her.

Unfortunately, they were still five minutes away from the clinic when the dog went into labor. โ€œThis is definitely happening,โ€ Ivey said, doing what she could to make the animal comfortable.

Leaning closer to the steering wheel, Hope drove a little faster. โ€œBe there soon.โ€

Theyโ€™d barely gotten in the door when her water broke. Hope ran ahead to prepare an area, moving with practiced ease as she opened an already cleaned kennel and set up a whelping box, then filled it with bedding material. The box had three tall sides to contain the coming puppies, and one low side for the mother to step out for food and water.

Knowing Hope had it in hand, Ivey began cleaning the dog as quickly and efficiently as possible. She managed a cursory job, removing the worst of the mud, when Hope rejoined her. โ€œWeโ€™re all set.โ€

โ€œWith luck weโ€™ll have enough time to clean and wrap her leg before she gives birth.โ€ Usually that happened within two hours after the animalโ€™s water breaking, so they didnโ€™t have a minute to spare.

A day that had already been long just turned entirely endless.

His Moonflower

a Silver Fox romance

Single Dad’s Romance series

by TK Cherry

Blurb:

ADAM

At forty-three, I’ve experienced my fair share of love and even betrayal.ย

That very same heartbreak gave me the gift of two adolescent boys, and I owe it to them to be a good example.ย

But the proverbial girl next door has captured my attention and has me craving things I shouldn’t want. Not with Everly. Itโ€™s almost shameful how much of my headspace is consumed by someone half my age.ย ย

EVERLY

I may be young, but I’m no stranger to failed relationships and heartbreak. In fact, the last time I fell in love, it almost killed me.

But everything about Adam, the sexy and much older man next door, draws me in. I don’t care that he’s nearly twice my age or that he has two young sons. I would do just about anything to make him mine.

Can I convince him that age is just a number, or will he shut me out because he’s also my uncle’s good friend?

Excerpt:

Medical school might’ve been a more practical option for me over business school because I’m a very sick man. I should be in therapy, or maybe even prison, for all the despicable thoughts consuming me over the past three years.

Why does she leave the blinds wide open like that at night?

Doesn’t she know I can see right inside her bedroom?

I spot the white wireless earbuds tucked into Everly’s ears, revealing the reason her upper body sways silently as she folds laundry on the bed. She’s dressed in nothing but a borderline translucent white camisole and teeny, pale blue panties. The shadows of dark circles up top and the plump skin teasing me from between her crossed legs below makes me wild inside. Suddenly, she takes a break from folding, rises, and starts dancing on the floor.

Sweet mother ofโ€ฆ

It’s a seductive expression of a sound that only she hears. I wish I knew what she was dancing to. For now, my imagination plays “I Touch Myself” by Divinyls in order to occupy the quiet space on my side of the window and drown out my breathing. Even though the song playing inside my head gives the perfect tempo for her sexy little shimmy, something dawns on me.

She wasn’t even born when that song came out.

Shit! Close the fucking window, Holt!

My insides are shouting at me like the viewing audience warning a woman not to trudge through the woods in a horror film. But like her, I don’t listen. I don’t know what it will take for me to stop obsessing over this young girl next doorโ€”rather, young woman. But stillโ€ฆ She’s young.

I’m old enough to be her father.

Will Dan have to kick my ass?

Having my bedroom window facing hers surpasses cruel and unusual punishment. I could choose to sleep in a different bedroom. I could also stop peeking through the blinds at night, stealing glimpses of her magnificent body. Instead, I’m like an alcoholic taking refuge in a wine cellar. She is Aphrodite, and I’m a eunuch being seduced by her nightly. Touching Everly is simply out of the question.

How old is she now? Twenty-one?

No matterโ€ฆ She’s way too young for me.

I’ve seen young guys from the neighborhood flocking there over the years, mainly to flirt with her and her cousin, Renchel. For me, Everly was the one who always stood out. She’s beautiful, with distinct features that became more refined as she got older. For the life of me, I don’t understand why boys aren’t breaking down her door.

Excerpt:

Mac bolted from the truck just as the sun crested the horizon and spread light around the area. He raced around the side of the house to the back and skidded to a stop. The intruder the owner had mentioned had one foot inside the window and his gloved hands gripped the molding. Mac darted forward, placed his hands on the porch railing and vaulted over it. He landed on the wooden flooring with a thud and faced the frozen figure now half in and half out of the house. โ€œDonโ€™t do it, man,โ€ Mac said. โ€œCops are on the way.โ€

His words seemed to send indecision sweeping through the guy. A pause Mac took advantage of. He lunged, grabbed two fistfuls of the hoodie material and pulled him away from the window. A heavy fist glanced off Macโ€™s cheek. He winced and jerked back, losing his grip. That gave the wiry figure the opening he needed, and he darted away from Mac to dash down the length of the porch, leap over the steps and head full-speed across the pasture. Mac pounded after him.

The guy broke through the tree line and disappeared into the woods. Mac did the same seconds later, only to stop when he realized heโ€™d lost him. Mac turned, listening, his eyes searching. Finally, he heard the crunching of underbrush to his left and headed that way, hit a patch of mud and slid almost falling. He managed to catch his balance, but a second later, the roar of a motorcycle captured his attention. After one last push through tree limbs and vines, he found himself staring at the back of a disappearing bike. He didnโ€™t know where the trail led, but there was no way heโ€™d catch the guy on foot. With a sigh, he gave up the chase and retraced his steps.

When he came to the pasture beyond the tree line, he could see the woman who was, hopefully, his future boss. Isabelle Trent. She stood on the front porch, a little girl about five years old clutching Isabelleโ€™s knee with one hand and a doll with her other. Isabelle cradled an infant in the crook of her right arm.

Dressed in jeans, boots and a long-sleeved red flannel shirt, she had her blond hair pulled into a messy ponytail. It struck him that she looked comfortable and completely in her element. If understandably shaken. Two police officers faced her. One wrote notes in a little black book while the other spoke into the radio on her shoulder. As Mac approached, Isabelleโ€™s green eyes landed on him, and the officers turned. Mac made sure they could see his hands.

โ€œThatโ€™s the man who came to the rescue,โ€ Isabelle said.

Excerpt:

Kara Holland stood in the darkness and waited for the killer.

With her heartbeat throbbing in her ears and her back pressed to the barn wall, she tried to listen for any sound to alert her that he was coming. Nothing. Not yet. But sheโ€™d done everything she could to lure him out and make him come after her.

And she was ready.

She had the Glock gripped in her hand, and thanks to the hours of firearms training, she knew how to use it. If that failed, if he somehow got the jump on her, sheโ€™d fall back on the hand-to-hand moves sheโ€™d also learned. Of course, those things didnโ€™t guarantee that she would stop him, but she had to try. She was tired of living with this smothering weight of fear.

Finally, she heard something. The sound of a car engine. Then a door closing. He had finally come for her.ย

The next thing she heard were the footsteps, slow and cautious. They were coming straight toward her barn.

Sheโ€™d purposely turned off all but the single light in the tack room, and Kara had left the door cracked just enough for a thin beam to pierce the darkness. She stayed in the shadows by a stack of hay bales, but when the killer came in the barn, sheโ€™d be able to see him.

Kara could certainly hear him.

Along with the footsteps, the hinges creaked on the barn door, and she pinpointed every bit of her focus while she lifted the Glock. And she took aim.

โ€œKara?โ€ the man called out.

She groaned, mixing it with some muttered profanity, because she instantly recognized that voice. Not a killer. But Deputy Daniel Logan.

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ she snapped once she could manage to speak.

โ€œChecking on you,โ€ Daniel snapped right back.

When he stepped into that beam of light from the tack room, she had no trouble seeing the riled expression on his face. Or the rest of him for that matter. He was wearing his usual jeans and work shirt on his tall rangy body. His Mercy Ridge deputyโ€™s badge was clipped to his belt.

โ€œIโ€™m fine,โ€ Kara assured him. Of course, that wasnโ€™t true, and he could clearly see that. After all, she was waiting in her dark barn while holding a gun. โ€œYou can go.โ€

โ€œNo, I wonโ€™t.โ€ Daniel sounded โ€œall copโ€ with that one-word response. And he didnโ€™t budge, either. In fact, he came closer, meeting her eye to eye.

โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t have come,โ€ Kara insisted.

โ€œI wanted to have a look around and see for myself if the rumors were true. They are,โ€ he added in a snarl. โ€œWhat the hell are you thinking?โ€

โ€œYou know what Iโ€™m thinking,โ€ she fired back.

That only caused him to release a long hard breath. No doubt one of frustration. Well, she was frustrated, too. And scared. Especially scared. Something that sheโ€™d hoped to end tonight.

โ€œTwo surrogates are dead,โ€ Kara reminded him. Not that a reminder was necessary. Daniel knew because sheโ€™d already told him. Sheโ€™d taken the news articles to him right away when she had learned about the dead women. โ€œBoth used the Willingham Fertility Clinic in San Antonio.โ€

Just as Kara had done. Again, no reminder was necessary for Daniel since the reason she had used the clinic and become a surrogate was to carry a baby for Daniel and his wife, Maryanne. Maryanne had also been Karaโ€™s sister.

As it always did, just remembering Maryanne made her feel as if someone had clamped a vise around her heart. It was almost certainly even worse for Daniel. Itโ€™d been nearly two years since Maryanne had lost her battle with breast cancer, but sometimes it felt as fresh as if itโ€™d just happened.

Excerpt:

Ford shifted into Park and, hands shaking, pulled out his still-ringing phone. As he did, he had a stray thought. How rare it used to be to get cell phone coverage here in the Gallatin Canyon, of all places. Only a few years ago the call wouldnโ€™t have gone through.

Without checking to see who was calling, he answered it, his hand shaking as he did. Heโ€™d come so close to going over the cliff. Until the call had saved him.

โ€œHello?โ€ He could hear noises in the background. โ€œHello?โ€ He let out a bitter chuckle. A robocall had saved him at the last moment? he thought.

But his laughter died as he heard a bloodcurdling scream coming from his phone. โ€œHello?โ€ he yelled. โ€œWho is this?โ€ The scream was followed by a womanโ€™s desperate pleas.

โ€œNo, please, donโ€™t hurt me anymore.โ€ Another scream and the sound of breaking glass.

โ€œHello?โ€ He was yelling, frantic, having no idea who was on the other end of the callโ€”just that she was in trouble. Had the woman meant to call 9ll? Maybe it was a pocket dial and she hadnโ€™t meant to call anyoneโ€”let alone a stranger.

โ€œTell me where you are!โ€ he yelled into the phone, but his voice was drowned out by another scream, this one filled with pure terrorโ€”and pain. He knew both too well.

The sound of something hard hitting soft flesh was followed by a choking sound. Choking on blood? The woman was being attacked. By an intruder? Or someone she knew? Heโ€™d never felt more helpless as he listened to more breaking glass and the womanโ€™s screams.

โ€œNo! Please, Humphrey, youโ€™re going to kill me! Please. Stay back. Donโ€™t make meโ€ฆโ€ The gunshot sounded deafeningโ€”even on the phone. Then there was no sound at all coming from his cell.

Ford stared down at the phone in his hand, shock shuddering through him. The woman on the other end of the line had called the man Humphrey. His already pounding heart thumped against his ribs, making his chest ache. It couldnโ€™t be. He stared at the name that had come up on his phone. No. He tried to call the number back. It went straight to voice mail. Someone must have found the phone and shut it off. Or declined the call.

His heart was pounding. For a moment, he was too stunned to move, almost to breathe, at what heโ€™d just heard, what heโ€™d been unable to stop. Rachel. The call was from his former college roommateโ€™s wife, Rachel Westlakeโ€”now Mrs. Humphrey Collinwood.

Heโ€™d only recently added her number to his contact list after sheโ€™d sent him a friend request on social media and theyโ€™d exchanged cell phone numbers.

His pulse pounded so loud that he couldnโ€™t hear himself think. Fumbling in his fear and panic, he hit 911.ย

It couldnโ€™t be true. He knew Humphrey. Theyโ€™d been roommates most of their time in college. His former friend wouldnโ€™t hurt anyone. Humphrey idolized Rachel. But from what heโ€™d heard on the callโ€ฆ

Outside the pickup, the wind howled in the pines. A gust blew dirt over the cliff and into the abyss, reminding him how close heโ€™d come to making that same descent. The only thing that had stopped him was the phone call. Or would he have hit the brakes on his own? He would never know.

The 911 operator came on the line. โ€œWhat is the nature of your emergency?โ€

โ€œI think I just heard someone being attacked and possibly killed on what I suspect was a pocket dial.โ€ His voice broke. โ€œHer name is Rachel Westlake. Sorry, itโ€™s Collinwood now.โ€ He listened as the dispatcher asked him a question. โ€œNo, I donโ€™t know where she lives exactly. A ranch north of Big Timber. Thatโ€™s all I know. We only recently reconnected. Thatโ€™s how she had my number. Please, you have to find her. She might still beโ€ฆalive.โ€

She didnโ€™t count on his firm refusal, nor did she count on seeing him again. Until she discovers heโ€™s her new landlord.

Kemp Lander, aka Mr. July, wants nothing to do with Violetโ€™s schemes to make him a model for her Cowboy Chat Corral, particularly once he finds out she fudged the truth on her rental contract by claiming she was a cowgirl. Excerpt:

โ€œI need to get Heart-to-Heart Corral up and running.โ€ Violet Ashwood glanced at Kemp Lander where he sat across from her at the dining table.

He sighed and leaned back in his chair. โ€œYou havenโ€™t given up on me representing your lonely hearts club, have you?โ€

โ€œNo. Your photo in the Wet & Wild Cowboy Firefighters calendar drew me here. That hasnโ€™t changed one bit since I got here. โ€

He nodded, then pulled the plate with his piece of pie close to him and dug in with a fork.

She followed his action, but she didnโ€™t feel hungry now.

He ate a couple of bites before he set down his fork. He looked out the windows, then back at her. โ€œMaybe we can compromise.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ She felt her taste come back with the advent of sudden hope.

โ€œYouโ€™ve invested a lot of time and effort in something youโ€™re obviously passionate about.โ€

โ€œI am. Everyone deserves true love.โ€

He raised an eyebrow. โ€œWhat about you?โ€

โ€œMe?โ€

โ€œTrue love.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m looking for othersโ€ฆnot myself,โ€ she said.

โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s just that Iโ€™ve never been lucky in love.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t imagine why not.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s let it go at that.โ€ She forked a bite of pie into her mouth, but sheโ€™d lost her taste for it again.

โ€œI donโ€™t see how you can promote something you donโ€™t believe in.โ€

โ€œI do believe in it.โ€

โ€œProve it.โ€ He leaned toward her with a challenging gleam in his green eyes.

โ€œProve it?โ€ She didnโ€™t trust that gleam. โ€œHow?โ€

โ€œKiss me.โ€

She took a deep breath, wanting that very thing and not wanting it at the same time. Mr. July was getting more dangerous to her heart every moment she was in his company.

โ€œYouโ€™re not willing to put yourself on the line?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t think you were interested inโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not interested in posing for your website, but I am interested in you.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ She felt her face flush at his words as heat rushed through her entire body.

โ€œI thought you might be interested in an experiment, seeing as how youโ€™ve come all this way from San Antonio.โ€

โ€œExperiment?โ€

He tossed his napkin on the table, stood up, and held out his hand to her. โ€œLetโ€™s go out on the patio and discuss our options.โ€

She gestured toward the dirty plates and table full of dishes. โ€œShouldnโ€™t we clean up?โ€

โ€œIt can wait. I canโ€™t.โ€

She grasped his hand, palm to palm, as she stood up. She could feel the roughness of his skin, see the stubble of his beard, and smell the soap heโ€™d used in his shower. It was all heady stuff.

He led her into the sunroom, turned on a lamp for soft illumination, and opened the back door so that pale light spilled outside. The scent of roses in bloom filled the night air and moonlight cast a silvery glow over the patio.

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you sit on the glider while I go back and get our wine?โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ She really couldnโ€™t say more as she watched him go inside because she felt as if her heart were in her throat.

When he returned, he handed her a glass, clinked hers with his, and nodded as if heโ€™d made a decision.

She took a sip and returned his smile. She felt good, happy, contented. It was a mild, sweetscented spring night with a handsome man by her side. If she could convey

this setting, this feeling, to her lonely hearts club, she felt sure people would positively respond in droves.

He leaned toward her. โ€œNow, about your lonely hearts clubโ€ฆโ€

She leaned toward him. โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œDo you really need me?โ€

โ€œI want you.โ€ She immediately wished sheโ€™d chosen different words.

โ€œI want you, too.โ€ He set down his glass. โ€œWhat are we going to do about it?โ€

โ€œI meantโ€”โ€

โ€œI know what you meant, but canโ€™t you mean something more, something personal, something just between us?โ€

She felt her heart pick up speed. She caught his gazeโ€ฆand felt as if sheโ€™d always belonged here in this moment with this man.

โ€œSomething special?โ€ he asked.

She had to respond, but she couldnโ€™t find the words. If he looked at her with any more heat in his eyes, she might spontaneously combust. โ€œIโ€ฆโ€ And then she threw caution to the wind, leaned forward, and kissed him. It was just a soft, fleeting, tender touch before she moved back.

โ€œI hope that was only an appetizer.โ€ He clasped her shoulders with both hands and gently tugged her toward him.

She leaned into him, feeling his heat, his strength, his power. She wanted it all. She didnโ€™t want to compromise. She raised her face, waiting for his kissโ€ฆwaitingโ€ฆwaitingโ€ฆ

โ€œI want you to know I donโ€™t do this lightly. I know you really only want me for your lonely hearts club. I know youโ€™ll go back to San Antonio when you get what you want here. I know all that, and I still want to kiss you. I need to kiss you. I plan to kiss you. Itโ€™s just that Iโ€™m a serious kind of guy.โ€

โ€œKemp, I swear if you say one more word, Iโ€™m taking the pie and going home.โ€

He grinned, chuckling. โ€œYouโ€™d take the pie? Thatโ€™s serious.โ€

โ€œYes, it is. And Iโ€™m serious, too.โ€ She put her palms on each side of his face. โ€œPlease, just kiss me.โ€

And he didโ€ฆtender at first, then with growing passion until he lifted her up, set her on his lap, leaned her head back against his arm, and held her tightly.

She felt his heat and strength and desire build as one kiss followed another and he delved deeply into her mouth, hugged her closer and closer as if desperate to meld their bodies so they could never be separate again.

Finally, he raised his head, kissed the tip of her nose, gave her a slight smile. โ€œAnd I thought that fire I just fought was hot.โ€ย

Excerpt:

Levi Duke let the engine idle and rubbed his temple. Another headache, courtesy of the wreck. The headaches were probably temporary, the doctors said. He sighed. Yes, the car accident four months before had left him with a scar, but worse yet, his hospital time made him miss out on a perfect horse to add to his herd. That was the real pain of it.

โ€œNot this time,โ€ he said. โ€œWeโ€™re gonna have ourselves a new mare, โ€™Jo.โ€

Banjo, the sizable mutt with a chunk missing from one ear, sprawled in his passenger seat and licked the knee of Leviโ€™s jeans. The dog slithered his way under Leviโ€™s palm until he got the ear rub he was looking for. Mission accomplished, he flopped over and presented his belly, long legs taking up more than his fair share of the room. His fleas and the mud were gone now, thanks to a bath that had been a struggle of epic proportions, his leg wound treated, too. His ribs were not quite as prominent as the day Levi had found him panting and half-dead in a dry creek bed. The dog had introduced himself with eyes desperate for help and the faintest of tail wags. Who could say no to that?

The cell phone chimed.

โ€œWeโ€™re just driving past the Funeral Mountains.โ€ Maraโ€™s voice was cool, in spite of the faint Southern drawl. Never could hide her feelings. She was upset with him for inviting her brother, Seth, to partner with him in purchasing the Rocking Horse Ranch. Maybe she had a right to be. A busted-up old ranch just outside Death Valley National Park, a place so hot it was nearly uninhabitable four months of the year? Not exactly a surefire moneymaker. But it wasnโ€™t really about the moneyโ€”not for him, anyway. He was surprised Mara had even agreed to accompany Seth to meet the mare. Maybe Mara was softening to the idea? Not likely.

โ€œBe careful,โ€ he said. โ€œRoadโ€™s steep. Iโ€™ll meet you at the farm and introduce you to Cookie. Sheโ€™s a sweetheart.โ€ Offered for sale by a local, the mare would be a perfect fit for their current herd of eleven if co-owner Seth approved. They needed more horses pronto to meet the tourist demands for the November Camp Town Days Festival the following week.

There was a pause. โ€œAll right.โ€

He forced cheer into his voice to counteract her lack of enthusiasm. โ€œLaney and Beckett are having a barbecue at the Hotsprings. They asked me to invite you both.โ€ His cousin Beckettโ€™s hotel was making a slow recovery after the set of killings that had resulted in Beckettโ€™s false imprisonment and a threat to Laneyโ€™s life. It was easier to forget those days now, as the couple prepared for the spring birth of their first child.

Mara queried her brother and returned her attention to the phone. โ€œSeth says heโ€™d love to go, but I have some business to work on.โ€

Business? Mara helped run her parentsโ€™ furniture store in Henderson, Nevada, some two hundred miles away. Odd that sheโ€™d have business here in podunk Furnace Falls. It wasnโ€™t his nature to pry. Then again, she might just be making an excuse to stay far away from him. He blew out a silent breath. Horses were so much easier to read than people, especially women, most especially Mara Castillo.

The Wicked Aftermath

The Wickeds: Dark Knights at Bayside

by Melissa Foster

Releasing June 9, 2021

World Literary Press

Blurb:

When the person you blame for your grief is the only one who can save you from the painโ€ฆ

Tank Wicked lost his sister and has since vowed to save everyone else in his path. He lives by the creed of the Dark Knights motorcycle club, sworn to protect and respect his community. He selflessly saves lives as a volunteer firefighter and treats the men and women who work for him at his tattoo shop like family. But life isnโ€™t a balance scale where good deeds negate bad things to come, and one foggy night life guts Tank once again. When a car careens over the side of a bridge and into a river, Tank springs into action, plunging into the water to rescue the passengers. Four people go into the river, but only three come out alive.

Leah Yates is just trying to make it through each day. When the man she blames for her grief becomes the only one who can pull her from the depths of despair, she discovers that even hope comes at a price. Maybe this time she wonโ€™t have to face it alone.

THE WICKED AFTERMATH is an emotionally gripping story of love, loss, and hope, with a rich and entrancing happily ever after. Set on the sandy shores of Cape Cod, the Wickeds feature fiercely protective heroes, strong heroines, and unbreakable family bonds. If you think bikers are all the same, you havenโ€™t met the Dark Knights. The Dark Knights are a motorcycle club, not a gang. Their members stick together like family and will stop at nothing to keep their communities safe. Some of the Wickedsโ€™ love stories will be hilariously fun and deeply emotional, others will tear at your heartstrings and include injections of humor, but they will all leave you wishing you could climb between the pages and join them. All Wicked novels may be enjoyed as standalone romances.

Review:

I kinda feel like the blurb doesn’t do this book justice. I almost passed this one by because I was expecting a whole lot of drama but that’s not what Foster gives us at all. The emotion is there in loads but there is actually very little angst. Instead we get a touching story of loss, grief, healing, and love. I’ll be honest, I cried at least twice so be prepared.

Tank, like all the Wickeds, is a stand-up guy with a big heart. He takes his duty of protecting others seriously and that soon includes Leah and her little family. It’s beyond sweet seeing them getting closer (and those little girls wrapping ALL the Wickeds around their little fingers), supporting each other, and becoming a unit of their own.

Leah hasn’t had a lot of support outside of her brother since her father died years ago. It doesn’t take long for the Wickeds to show her what it means to be one of them. It might have happened under tragic circumstances but it gives her just what she needs.

There’s a decent amount of heat but so much more heart inย The Wicked Aftermath. They aren’t kidding that it will “tear at your heartstrings” but Foster always knows how to make everything right and give a happy ending that is truly satisfying.
