Excerpt:

Evan walked into the Whitman Street Cat Cafe, pushing through the second door and grinning at Lauren like heโ€™d already had three cups of coffee.ย ย

โ€œDerek got married this weekend,โ€ Lauren said by way of greeting.ย ย

โ€œAw, honey, Iโ€™m sorry,โ€ said Evan. โ€œAnything I can do?โ€ย

โ€œDrive to New Hampshire and punch him in the face?โ€ย

Evan tilted his head and seemed to consider doing just that. โ€œAs fun as that sounds, Derek is kind of a big guy. He might punch back, and I bruise like a peach.โ€ย

Lauren laughed despite herself. She shoved her phone in her pocket. โ€œIโ€™m over it.ย Soย my ex got married? Itโ€™s fine. Iโ€™m fine.โ€ย

โ€œAttagirl.โ€ Evan looked up at the menu like he didnโ€™t get coffee here nearly every morning.ย ย

โ€œNot that Iโ€™m sad for the business,โ€ said Lauren, โ€œbut where did all these people come from?โ€ย

โ€œDidnโ€™t you hear? The Star Cafe closed last week.โ€ย

The Star Cafe was a great independent coffee shop that had, apparently until last week, been right across the street from the Cat Cafe. If it had closed, that explained all the people here, the last place that served coffee between Henry Street and the subway entrance on the next block.ย ย

โ€œIโ€™m devastated,โ€ Evan continued.ย ย

Lauren raised an eyebrow at him. โ€œIf anything, this is probably better for your health. There are only so many cups of coffee you can drink per day because you think the barista is cute before the caffeine gives you heart palpitations.โ€ย

Evan sighed and leaned against the counter next to Lauren. โ€œPablo gave me heart palpitations.โ€ย

โ€œAny idea what heโ€™s up to now?โ€ย

โ€œWhen I got my caramel vanilla latte on Friday, he told me heโ€™d applied to work at that little indie bookstore a few doors down. Hope springs.โ€ย

โ€œCrazy idea, but you could, like, ask him out.โ€ย

Evan gasped dramatically. โ€œWhereโ€™s the romance in that? Weโ€™re performing an elaborate dance.โ€ย

โ€œRight.โ€ Lauren glanced behind the counter, where Monique looked panicked as she took another order. โ€œMaybe I should hire him.โ€ย

โ€œHe makes a mean caramel vanilla latte.โ€ย ย

A bewildered man with light brown hair walked into the cafe then. Lauren had never seen him before, and she would have noticed. He was so handsome, Evan sucked in a sharp breath.ย ย

Lauren had sworn off men ever since Derek had announced his engagement, because she was tired of getting her heart stomped on, but that didnโ€™t mean she couldnโ€™t look. Because this man was pretty foxy. He was tall and fit, with neatly trimmed hair, a square jaw, and blue eyes that sparkled even from behind the dark-rimmed glasses he wore.ย ย

โ€œHello,โ€ said Evan.ย ย

The man looked around. When Sadie trotted over to investigate him, he looked a little startled by her presence.ย ย

โ€œOh,โ€ he said, catching Laurenโ€™s eye. โ€œIโ€™ve heard about places like this, but I guess it didnโ€™t occur to me that the cats would just beโ€ฆ out.โ€ย

โ€œOnly Sadie has free rein in the cafe,โ€ said Lauren. โ€œSheโ€™s in charge. Sheโ€™s also terrified of cars, so she doesnโ€™t try to escape. The rest of the cats are through that door.โ€ She pointed.ย ย

โ€œAh.โ€ย ย

Lauren wasnโ€™t really sure what to say next. Evan elbowed her, though, so she said, โ€œDid you want to see the cats, orโ€”โ€ย

โ€œI just need a cup of coffee for now. This place is hopping.โ€ย

โ€œGo on,โ€ Lauren said. โ€œIโ€™m not in line and you look like youโ€™re in a hurry.โ€ย

The man pulled a phone from his pocket and glanced at the time. โ€œYeah, a little.โ€ He slid forward. โ€œThank you.โ€ย

โ€œAre you new to the neighborhood?โ€ย ย

โ€œYeah. Just moved to Brooklyn a week ago, actually.โ€ย

โ€œWelcome!โ€ย

He shot her a bashful half smile and nodded. โ€œThanks.โ€ย

Monique said, โ€œNext!โ€ย

The light-haired man nodded at Lauren and then walked to the register.ย ย

Victor, the other barista, must have noticed this guy was a little twitchy, probably with a job to get toโ€”he was wearing a blue oxford shirt tucked into navy blue slacks, the uniform of the Midtown office workerโ€”and he grabbed the pot and poured a cup of coffee right away. Once the man paid, Victor handed him the cup and said, โ€œMilk and sugar are at the end of the counter.โ€ย

โ€œGreat.โ€ The man took his cup.ย ย

โ€œThe usual,โ€ Lauren said to Monique now that the line had dissipated. Then she walked over to the man as he shook a sugar packet. โ€œIโ€™m Lauren, by the way.โ€ย

The man gave her a genuine smile this time. โ€œCaleb. Maybe Iโ€™ll see you around, Lauren.โ€ Sadie meowed and sat at his feet. โ€œAnd you, too, Sadie.โ€ย

Handsome and he liked the cats. No weddingย ring. This had some potential.ย ย

Oh, except for the part where Lauren was not dating in order to concentrate on making a fulfilling life for herself without a man.ย ย

Caleb walked back outside.ย ย

โ€œGirl,โ€ said Evan. โ€œHe was totally checking you out.โ€ย

Warm excitement spread through Laurenโ€™s chest. It had been a while since sheโ€™d met anyone who made her pulse race like this. She wondered if Caleb would come back.ย ย

โ€œBoss, your coffeeโ€™s ready,โ€ said Monique.ย ย

Lauren took it gratefully. โ€œAll right. Do you have to work today,ย Ev, or do you want to meet our newest resident? Weโ€™ve got a gorgeous new calico named Lucy.โ€ย

โ€œIโ€™m meeting a client at ten, so Iย gottaย go, but you can tell me all about Miss Lucy and report back on that tall guy over drinks tonight.โ€ย

โ€œPop at seven?โ€ย

โ€œPerfect.โ€ย

Monique handed Evan his coffee, which he took with a grin. He blew Lauren a kiss with his free hand and then walked out the door.ย ย

โ€œCome on, Sadie,โ€ said Lauren. โ€œLetโ€™s get to work.โ€ย
