Excerpt:
Sully drove straight to the flower shop. A bell rang as he walked in, and an older woman in a colorful floral smock appeared from the back.
โHello. Iโm Myra. How can I help you?”
โI want to get a bouquet of flowers. Do you have some made up?โ
โYes. Here in the cooler behind this stand of stuffed toys. But if you donโt see what you want, I can easily make something else while you wait.โ
โOkay, thanks,โ Sully said. โLet me check these out first.โ
โSeeing as how fall is upon us, we have several different sizes of fall bouquets, and with different kinds of flowers. And, of course, the roses,โ Myra said.
He pointed to a bouquet of red roses in a crystal vase with a ruby-colored base.
โThose, in that vase with the ruby-colored base. How much are those?โ
โWell, itโs a dozen American Beauties, and the vase is crystal, which makes it a bit pricier than others. Itโs one hundred and ten dollars.โ
โIโll take it,โ Sully said.
Myra beamed. Her husband, Harold, had fussed at her nonstop because sheโd used a vase that expensive, and now she could say โI told you so.โ
โWonderful,โ she said, as she removed the bouquet from the cooler and carried it to the register. โWill this be cash or credit card?โ
โCard,โ Sully said as he pulled it out of his wallet.
โIf you want to sign a card to go with the flowers, you can pick from these,โ Myra said, pointing to the little rack on the counter.
โNo card, Iโm handing them to her in person.โ
Myra pulled up a new screen on the computer. โYour name, sir?โ
โSully Raines.โ
Myra gasped. โYouโre the man who saved Melissa Deanโs life, arenโt you?โ
โYes, maโam.โ
โThis is wonderful. Iโm glad to meet you. Everybody loves Melissa.โ
Sully smiled. โIโm finding that out, but Iโm not surprised. She was a sweetheart when we were kids, and sheโs only gotten better with age.โ
โYou knew each other! Wow. Then you must have been really frantic when you were trying to get her out of the burning car.โ
โIโd only arrived in town about an hour before it happened. I didnโt know anybody here, and I sure didnโt know it was her until we were in the ER. The last time weโd seen each other, we were thirteen.โ
โOh my! What an amazing story. If these are for her, please give her our best.โ
โYes, maโam,โ Sully said, and then they finished the purchase.
He made the drive back to Melissaโs house slowly and carefully, and he was happy to see her car in the driveway when he arrived. He got out carrying the vase, and then instead of using the key sheโd given him, he rang the doorbell.
When Melissa opened the door, her eyes widened in delight.
โDelivery for the prettiest woman in Blessings,โ he said.
She laughed. โI think you must have the wrong house.โ
โNope. I know exactly where I am, and these are for you. Where do you want me to put them?โ he asked.
โI think here on this table in the foyer. That way Iโll see them all the time, coming and going.โ
He set them on the table, then turned around and hugged her.
โDoes this mean Elliot gave you good news?โ Melissa asked.
โHe gave me news,โ Sully said, and felt the knowing of meant to be when he kissed her.
Melissaโs heart fluttered from the gentleness of the kiss, but she was dying for information.
โBut what news? Did he know where she was?โ
โThat man talks around a subject more than anyone Iโve ever met. He told me my birth fatherโs name, thinking I already knew.โ
โOh my gosh! What is it?โ
โMarc Adamos. I never found the name on any papers, but now I know.โ
โAnd your mom? What did he say?โ
โHe told me not to leave Blessings.โ
Melissa frowned. โBut what does that mean, exactly? That sheโs here? Then where?โ
โHe just kept repeating, โDonโt leave Blessings,โ so Iโm not leaving.โ
Melissa laughed and hugged him. โDonโt expect me to be sad about that.โ
โHe also said you were my soul mate and wished us a long and happy life together.โ
She gasped. โDid he really say that?โ
Sully nodded.
Melissa sighed. โWell, it took us long enough to find each other again. Maybe that is why it was so easy to fall back into this.โ
โWorks for me,โ Sully said, then kissed her again until he heard her moan. โThe feeling is mutual.โ
Melissa felt like her whole body was hummingโlike someone had turned up the energy in the room.
Sully saw her shiver. โAre you afraid? Donโt be afraid. This is not anything to act on until weโre ready.โ
โAfraid? Of you? No, Sully. I just donโt know what to do with what I feel.โ
โThen donโt do anything. When the time is right, there wonโt be any confusion. That I can promise.โ He wrapped his arms around her. โItโs all good, love. Itโs going to be all right.โ
โI feel like a forty-something idiot. This should not be so hard,โ she muttered.
He chuckled, and when he did, she started to push away, then felt his heartbeat. Without moving, she put her other hand on her own. Their heartbeats were in rhythm.
โWhatโs wrong?โ Sully said.
She reached for his hand and put it over his own heart, and then put his other hand on hers.
โFeel that?โ she asked.
โFeel whatโฆ Oh, wow! Weโre in sync.โ Then he laughed. โI love this.โ
โI know,โ she said. โItโs pretty amazing. I adore the roses, and I adore you, too, Sully Raines.โ
โIs this where I sweep you off your feet and take you to bed, or is this where we go eat pie?โ
Melissa burst into laughter, and once the joy bubbled up, more kept coming, and she laughed until there were tears in her eyes.
Sully grinned and then put his arm around her and led her to the kitchen.
โI think itโs pie.โ
โJust because you went to see a psychic doesnโt mean youโre turning into one.โ
He stopped in the middle of the kitchen floor. โAre you saying itโs not pie?โ
โNot pie. Cake!โ
โYou and your sass,โ Sully said, and kissed the laugh right off her face.
