Excerpt:

Sully drove straight to the flower shop. A bell rang as he walked in, and an older woman in a colorful floral smock appeared from the back.

โ€œHello. Iโ€™m Myra. How can I help you?”

โ€œI want to get a bouquet of flowers. Do you have some made up?โ€

โ€œYes. Here in the cooler behind this stand of stuffed toys. But if you donโ€™t see what you want, I can easily make something else while you wait.โ€

โ€œOkay, thanks,โ€ Sully said. โ€œLet me check these out first.โ€

โ€œSeeing as how fall is upon us, we have several different sizes of fall bouquets, and with different kinds of flowers. And, of course, the roses,โ€ Myra said.

He pointed to a bouquet of red roses in a crystal vase with a ruby-colored base.

โ€œThose, in that vase with the ruby-colored base. How much are those?โ€

โ€œWell, itโ€™s a dozen American Beauties, and the vase is crystal, which makes it a bit pricier than others. Itโ€™s one hundred and ten dollars.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll take it,โ€ Sully said.

Myra beamed. Her husband, Harold, had fussed at her nonstop because sheโ€™d used a vase that expensive, and now she could say โ€œI told you so.โ€

โ€œWonderful,โ€ she said, as she removed the bouquet from the cooler and carried it to the register. โ€œWill this be cash or credit card?โ€

โ€œCard,โ€ Sully said as he pulled it out of his wallet.

โ€œIf you want to sign a card to go with the flowers, you can pick from these,โ€ Myra said, pointing to the little rack on the counter.

โ€œNo card, Iโ€™m handing them to her in person.โ€

Myra pulled up a new screen on the computer. โ€œYour name, sir?โ€

โ€œSully Raines.โ€

Myra gasped. โ€œYouโ€™re the man who saved Melissa Deanโ€™s life, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œYes, maโ€™am.โ€

โ€œThis is wonderful. Iโ€™m glad to meet you. Everybody loves Melissa.โ€

Sully smiled. โ€œIโ€™m finding that out, but Iโ€™m not surprised. She was a sweetheart when we were kids, and sheโ€™s only gotten better with age.โ€

โ€œYou knew each other! Wow. Then you must have been really frantic when you were trying to get her out of the burning car.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d only arrived in town about an hour before it happened. I didnโ€™t know anybody here, and I sure didnโ€™t know it was her until we were in the ER. The last time weโ€™d seen each other, we were thirteen.โ€

โ€œOh my! What an amazing story. If these are for her, please give her our best.โ€

โ€œYes, maโ€™am,โ€ Sully said, and then they finished the purchase.

He made the drive back to Melissaโ€™s house slowly and carefully, and he was happy to see her car in the driveway when he arrived. He got out carrying the vase, and then instead of using the key sheโ€™d given him, he rang the doorbell.

When Melissa opened the door, her eyes widened in delight.

โ€œDelivery for the prettiest woman in Blessings,โ€ he said.

She laughed. โ€œI think you must have the wrong house.โ€

โ€œNope. I know exactly where I am, and these are for you. Where do you want me to put them?โ€ he asked.

โ€œI think here on this table in the foyer. That way Iโ€™ll see them all the time, coming and going.โ€

He set them on the table, then turned around and hugged her.

โ€œDoes this mean Elliot gave you good news?โ€ Melissa asked.

โ€œHe gave me news,โ€ Sully said, and felt the knowing of meant to be when he kissed her.

Melissaโ€™s heart fluttered from the gentleness of the kiss, but she was dying for information.

โ€œBut what news? Did he know where she was?โ€

โ€œThat man talks around a subject more than anyone Iโ€™ve ever met. He told me my birth fatherโ€™s name, thinking I already knew.โ€

โ€œOh my gosh! What is it?โ€

โ€œMarc Adamos. I never found the name on any papers, but now I know.โ€

โ€œAnd your mom? What did he say?โ€

โ€œHe told me not to leave Blessings.โ€

Melissa frowned. โ€œBut what does that mean, exactly? That sheโ€™s here? Then where?โ€

โ€œHe just kept repeating, โ€˜Donโ€™t leave Blessings,โ€™ so Iโ€™m not leaving.โ€

Melissa laughed and hugged him. โ€œDonโ€™t expect me to be sad about that.โ€

โ€œHe also said you were my soul mate and wished us a long and happy life together.โ€

She gasped. โ€œDid he really say that?โ€

Sully nodded.

Melissa sighed. โ€œWell, it took us long enough to find each other again. Maybe that is why it was so easy to fall back into this.โ€

โ€œWorks for me,โ€ Sully said, then kissed her again until he heard her moan. โ€œThe feeling is mutual.โ€

Melissa felt like her whole body was hummingโ€”like someone had turned up the energy in the room.

Sully saw her shiver. โ€œAre you afraid? Donโ€™t be afraid. This is not anything to act on until weโ€™re ready.โ€

โ€œAfraid? Of you? No, Sully. I just donโ€™t know what to do with what I feel.โ€

โ€œThen donโ€™t do anything. When the time is right, there wonโ€™t be any confusion. That I can promise.โ€ He wrapped his arms around her. โ€œItโ€™s all good, love. Itโ€™s going to be all right.โ€

โ€œI feel like a forty-something idiot. This should not be so hard,โ€ she muttered.

He chuckled, and when he did, she started to push away, then felt his heartbeat. Without moving, she put her other hand on her own. Their heartbeats were in rhythm.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ Sully said.

She reached for his hand and put it over his own heart, and then put his other hand on hers.

โ€œFeel that?โ€ she asked.

โ€œFeel whatโ€ฆ Oh, wow! Weโ€™re in sync.โ€ Then he laughed. โ€œI love this.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ she said. โ€œItโ€™s pretty amazing. I adore the roses, and I adore you, too, Sully Raines.โ€

โ€œIs this where I sweep you off your feet and take you to bed, or is this where we go eat pie?โ€

Melissa burst into laughter, and once the joy bubbled up, more kept coming, and she laughed until there were tears in her eyes.

Sully grinned and then put his arm around her and led her to the kitchen.

โ€œI think itโ€™s pie.โ€

โ€œJust because you went to see a psychic doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™re turning into one.โ€

He stopped in the middle of the kitchen floor. โ€œAre you saying itโ€™s not pie?โ€

โ€œNot pie. Cake!โ€

โ€œYou and your sass,โ€ Sully said, and kissed the laugh right off her face.
