Releasing May 30, 2016

Loveswept

Blurb:

Opposites attract in this seductive novel from the author of Against the Cage (“Funny, steamy, scorching.”—Toni Aleo), with a chiseled MMA fighter falling for a single mom who could use a real man in her corner.

Working two jobs to support her infant daughter is harder than anything Penny Richards has ever done, but it sure beats living under the rules of her stepfather, a television preacher who demands a picture-perfect family. And if Penny hadn’t struck out on her own, she never would have met Travis Calhoun. The intensely physical heavyweight brawler has a way of drawing out her wild side. But Travis lives fast, with no responsibilities—and that just isn’t for Penny.

Most of the women in Travis’s circle wear tight clothes, high heels, and tons of makeup—not pearls or plaid headbands. But once he works past Penny’s inhibitions, Travis discovers a kindred spirit who longs to trust someone with her body, and her secrets. Still, Travis can’t help but wonder if this rich girl is just slumming it before she returns to her privileged life. Now it’s up to Penny to prove that she wants her hard-edged, hard-loving fighter just the way he is.

Excerpt:

“Yes I know. You’re perfectly capable of taking a bus and working at a strip club. Pearls and whatever-the-fuck-thing you have on your hair, and all. And, you’re absolutely perfectly capable of kissing me so hard and so damn sweet that I can’t fuckin’ stop thinking about it. It was like you poured molasses in my mouth and I can’t stop imagining how the rest of you tastes. But that’s not the point, right? The point is that I want to drive you home, so let me, okay?”

Her face warmed and her skin erupted in goose bumps. The man certainly had a way with words. Words that deserved a slap across the face, not a thumping heart or shaky knees.

“Well, it is late.” She conceded. “And it is better than taking the bus.”

“I’m glad the thought of me driving you home is just a few steps above a shitty public bus.” He said, laughing and she couldn’t help but laugh too.

SdneyHalston_author-photoAuthor Info:

USA Today bestselling author, Sidney Halston lives her life with one simple rule: “Just Do It”–Nike. And that’s exactly what she did.

After working hard as an attorney, Sidney picked up a pen for the first time at thirty years old to begin her dream of writing. Having never written anything other than very exciting legal briefs, she found an outlet for her imaginative, romantic side and wrote Seeing Red. That first pen stroke sealed the deal, and she fell in love with writing. Sidney lives in South Florida with her husband and children. She loves her family above all else, and reading follows a close second. When she’s not writing, you can find her reading and reading and reading. She’s a reader first and a writer second. When she’s not writing or reading, her life is complete and utter chaos, trying to balance family life with work and writing (and reading). But she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Cottonbloom #1

by Laura Trentham

Releasing May 31, 2016

St. Martin’s Paperbacks

Blurb:

A river divides Cottonbloom in two: the upscale enclave on the Mississippi side and the rundown, rough and tumble side in Louisiana. They’re worlds apart—but nothing can build a bridge like love…

Cade Fournette never had it easy Cottonbloom. He stuck around long enough to raise his orphaned siblings and then hightailed it out West—and never looked back. Even though he’s made a success of himself in Seattle, Cade never lost the toughness and the angry edge that helped him survive down South. His only weak spot: the girl he left behind…

Monroe Kirby came from the wealthy side of town, but that didn’t protect her from her mother’s drinking—or her mother’s boyfriend. It was Cade who did that, on a long-ago hot September night, before he disappeared…along with a piece of her heart. Now Monroe is a physical therapist who can fight for herself, and it’s Cade who could use some conditioning when he makes an unexpected return back home. Will he and Monroe pick up where they left off and finally explore their mutual passion—or will the scars and secrets of the past divide them once more?

Excerpt:

“You left Cottonbloom without telling me. Without saying good-bye. I want to know why.” Monroe hadn’t meant for the words to come out at all, much less with such vehemence.

“It was complicated.” Cade broke eye contact. “You were a good kid in a bad situation.”

“Weren’t you a good kid in a bad situation?”

He shifted toward her, bracing a hand on the dash and laying his other arm over the back of her seat, invading her space. She didn’t retreat. His intensity spurred her heart rate into an erratic gallop, yet she wasn’t intimidated. Perhaps it was only echoes of the past, but he made her feel safe, even when he was the one she should be scared of.

“I grew up fast and tough.” His voice contained more than a hint of warning.

“You were nice to me,” she said softly.

“Don’t fool yourself into thinking I’m nice. I wasn’t then, and I’m sure as hell not now.”

He ran a callused finger down her cheek, the rasp igniting her nerve endings like a flint. His hand continued south and wrapped itself in her braid, the slight tug on her scalp sending shivers through her body in spite of the sun bearing down on the truck. Her nipples felt tight, and she hoped her tight sports tank masked her sudden, inexplicable arousal.

He pulled her braid, forcing her toward him. She didn’t fight him. He dropped his face next to hers, his coarse beard hair caressing her cheek, his mouth close to her ear. “If I see something I want, I go after it and get it by any means necessary.”

“How very Machiavellian.” She tried a laugh, but it came out more like a stuttering sigh. His scent hooked her even closer, and her lips grazed the outer rim of his ear.

He pulled back, his green-eyed gaze roving her face. She returned the favor, noting the faint brackets around his mouth, the crinkles at his eyes, the thick beard. A full-grown man. Yet was he so different from the boy she remembered?

“Ovid.” The movement of his lips jammed the cogs of her brain. The word made no sense. Her confusion must have been obvious, because the mouth she stared at tipped up in the corners, deepening the grooves. “The Greek philosopher Ovid, not Machiavelli, actually wrote: The end justifies the means.”

“Ovid. Of course.” Apparently, Monroe had slept through that philosophy class at Ole Miss. The fact that high-school dropout Cade Fournette was quoting Ovid made her wonder what other mysteries she might uncover if she went digging.

Just when she was ready to grab a shovel, he released her braid and slipped away. His limp was less pronounced as he took the stairs holding the cane parallel to the ground. Although he’d physically released her, she felt bound to him in some other fundamental way, incapable of tearing her eyes off him until he disappeared behind Sawyer’s front door. Even then, she sat, unable to drive away for a long minute.

How could the simple brush of Cade’s finger ignite a fire when other men left her cold? As her arousal ebbed, she realized something else. She’d just been manipulated by a master. He hadn’t explained why he left.

She spent the evening going through the motions of her life, eating when her stomach growled and heading to bed when her eyes felt heavy. A few short hours ago, her life had been tidy and predictable and boring. Cade Fournette’s return had spun her into chaos.

Review:

*sigh* Trentham did it again – made me fall in love with a small Southern town and the wonderful people who live there.

My heart just breaks for how much Cade had to take on when his parents died.  Too much pride and youth had him taking on too much, doing anything he could to make sure his siblings stayed together and had what they needed to have a chance at a future.  Unfortunately that meant that he gave up a lot of his own dreams.  But the same grit and smarts that had him surviving in the swamps had him making a name for himself as an adult.  Guilted into a trip back home has him back with the girl that meant so much to him as a kid … but she’s all grown up.

While it might seem that Monroe would have had a golden past, things aren’t always better on the other side of the river.  Her childhood has left scars of their own and she’s still living with the fallout.  Running into the one man that always made her feel safe throws her world off kilter.  The man he’s grown into is hard to resist, especially as he was one of the bright spots of her past.  But he’s not staying … right?

You know that these two are going to get together and that he’s going to find a way to come home to Monroe & his family.  But as with any romance, it is the journey that makes it so good and this one is a can’t miss.  The characters are interesting, with great depth, and you easily find yourself sucked in as they try work their way through some long-held troubles.  We’re also introduced to characters who are going to make appearances in the next couple of stories and from what I’ve seen they are going to be must reads!

Excerpt:

Mandy strained to hear the mumbled voices, but it sounded like the usual pre-set conversation. Planning the song order and discussing a few shows lined up in the near future. Tapping her finger along the edge of the camera’s lens, Mandy wanted to scream for them to get started already. She hadn’t planned to be here all day. On the other side of town a band waited for her. A band who actually wanted her to take their pictures.

“You know, Angel,” a dulcet voice sang behind her. “I don’t recall sending press invites out for this rehearsal.”

Mandy stilled. Hot breath warmed her neck. Every hair on her body stood straight up and a few curled. “And here I thought mine had just been lost in the mail.” She turned, facing the solid mass of gorgeousness.

“I would hand deliver any invite I intended you to have.” Lucien paused just inches from her and Mandy reminded herself that breathing was not only allowed, also a necessity for survival. Leaning against the edge of the bar, Lucien lifted his gaze to hers and smiled.

“Wow,” she mouthed but couldn’t be certain whether she said the words out loud or let them linger in her head. Mandy inhaled the scent of freshly shaven skin, soft and tempting. Restraining herself from reaching out to touch him, she settled for leaning in closer and letting his smell inhabit every one of her pores.

“Consider this an invite to stay.” His hand lingered in the air between the bar top and Mandy’s arm. Mandy didn’t back away, watching his movement until he brushed a lock of hair off her shoulder, his finger lightly trailed across her skin. Most times the move would have the perpetrator on his knees in agony. This time Mandy’s knees were the ones to shake.

“But absolutely no pictures,” Lucien whispered. “Or I’ll have Carl over there carry your fine ass right out that door.”

Laughing, Mandy hesitated. First, no way would Carl touch her. She’d have his parole officer over here so fast he wouldn’t see her ass. And Carl knew this.

Second, who did Lucien think he was? A rock star? He was barely a member of Demon Dogs, and at this rate he’d never take them to rock star status. Not without her laying the foundation of information for the local music scene to absorb.

Third, he had noticed her ass and this pleased her a whole lot more than it should.

Mandy hugged her camera tight to her chest. No one had ever forbid her from taking pictures.

“Fine, I’ll just listen,” Mandy said. He might not want her taking pictures with her camera, but that didn’t stop her from raking her gaze over every inch of his body. The dark alley hadn’t done his hotness justice.

Along Came Mr. Right, Book Review, Gerri Russell

by Gerri Russell

Olivia Tyler loves helping foster children find their forever homes, but she’s still waiting for her forever love. Ever since her ex-boyfriend humiliated her on Facebook, she hasn’t been ready for a commitment. But on the night of the charity auction for her adoption agency, she gives in to temptation with a stranger who helps her out of a jam…and out of her bright-blue stilettos.

After the most mind-blowing romantic night of her life, everything about Max Right seems perfect: he’s handsome, chivalrous, and he’s about to launch an algorithm-based matchmaking app with an extraordinary success rate. But when Olivia finds out her mystery man is also someone else’s fiancé, no matter how much they seem to click, this romance doesn’t add up. For Olivia, unavailable means incompatible.

When a troubled teen comes to both of them for help, Olivia is willing to put their differences aside temporarily. But as the three spend time together, she discovers the truth about Max’s heart, and it just may be the key to opening her own.

I have to say that I go hot and cold on Max – I’m not sure if I really like him all that much.  I can understand his explanation on how he ended up engaged, but he seems a little weak in handling the situation, especially after he falls for Olivia.  And his “fiancé” isn’t the most sterling of people (although she does redeem herself just a teeny bit at the end) so his dedication to her doesn’t help matters.

Olivia’s commitment to her charity and the foster kids that it helps is appealing.  And she never comes off as overly preachy, which is easy for an author to do I think.  Instead she’s dedicated, compassionate and hard working.  I think that most people would be concerned about getting involved with someone who shows up in the press with a fiancé but she’s even more hesitant to trust thanks to her past.

I like the little glimpses we get of Paige, the foster girl that is experiencing some problems.  The lengths Olivia and Max are willing to go to help her definitely shows them in a positive manner.  But I also like how Russell shows some of her inner workings and how hard it is for her to find happiness.  It’s heartbreaking but unfortunately so realistic.

I’m willing to give another book by this author a chance – her writing style is very sound and the book went fast for me.  I think that, at least for me, the choice of putting Max into the position he’s in wasn’t appealing and it bled over to make him less appealing as well.  There’s nothing wrong with the character development – it is just hard to make him look good in that situation 🙂

Book Review, Fooling Around, Noelle Adams

cover83704-mediumFooling Around

by Noelle Adams

In this steamy novel from New York Times bestselling author Noelle Adams, a notorious tech mogul makes a mild-mannered woman an offer she can’t refuse. What he gets is a battle for control—and a million-dollar affair.

Eric Vincent isn’t in the habit of asking for help. As the founder of a lucrative sports videogame franchise, he’s accustomed to getting his way and enjoying the fruits of his hard-earned success. Then all his illusions of dominance are shattered by a skiing accident that leaves him hobbled, facing a string of surgeries and months of immobility. The only way he’s going to survive is with someone by his side to anticipate his every desire. Someone who will devote every waking second to his comfort. Someone like Julie Nelson . . .

Julie’s life revolves around other people: her students, her parents, her sister. But even she has her limits. Julie has zero interest in playing personal assistant to Eric Vincent, a man who’s as arrogant as he is charismatic . . . until he ups the salary to one million dollars for three months’ work. Soon Julie’s struggling to bite her tongue—and resist the chemistry that draws her to Eric. But after one scorching kiss, Julie decides it’s finally her turn to be selfish. And this time, she’s going to get what she wants.

(BTW, there is a minor spoiler for the ending below so stop reading if you don’t want to know.  But it is just a tiny thing.)

I was surprised at how much I liked this story.  Usually these contrived situations (and a Cinderella-esque love story) just don’t play out all that well, but Adams does a good job of giving readers people to like and a plot that works.

Eric may seem like he has everything (and he is a bit of a poor-little rich boy) but he does have troubles of his own.  And time spent with Julie, with some hard-hitting heart-to-hearts, has him looking at the man he is and why he lives his life the way he does.  Those same heart-to-hearts also has Julie looking a little deeper at her own motivations.  They are good for each other and grow closer as they are forced to spend a lot of time together.

I like that while Eric makes some minor changes, he doesn’t do a beast to prince transformation.  Instead, he learns to look a little deeper at his reactions to certain situations.  Julie gets to know him as he was – gruffness, spoiled moments, and all – and she likes him anyway.  She sees the caring and intelligent man he is as well and that while he has his faults he has his good side too.

Julie has the more obvious growth thanks to her time with Eric.  She learns to be a little more selfish (in a good way) and to stop avoiding the things she wants.  I think that my favorite thing is that after she starts on that path to finding her own life, she continues even with Eric in the picture.  She doesn’t let their romance stop her from getting her own apartment (for the first time in years) and figuring out how to be independent after all the time spent taking care of other people.

While it is still a little bit of a fairytale, with the rich man falling for his servant, it’s got the growth needed for both and a chance for them to be the support each other needs.

Unexpected, delightful, uniquely creative…Kathleen Gerard not only understands the canine brain, but she gets people too. The Thing Is reminds us of how intricate and interwoven relationships are—and Prozac teaches us about grace and unconditional love.”  — Melody Carlson, author of The Christmas Joy Ride, Finding Alice, and The Christmas Dog

“Everyone could use a little Prozac. Kathleen Gerard’s heartwarming and uplifting book will have you heading to a pound as soon as you put the book down (if you can ever manage to do it). An absolute page turner, The Thing is provides all the proof you’ll ever need that dogs are truly nothing less than Four Legged Angels.”  — Mary Curran Hackett, author of Proof of Heaven and Proof of Angels

This is my BEST read this year…kudos to Ms. Gerard. You nailed it!” — Fresh Fiction

“Is this an endearing book about a dog? Yes. But it’s more than that. The devastating ache of loss throbs through its pages from beginning to end. Even though the story is tempered with a good dose of humor and tail-wagging cuteness, be prepared – it’s an emotional read with a capital E.” — Scranton Book Examiner

Excerpt:

Always keep a camera close by at weddings, baptisms, and bar mitzvahs.

That was the cardinal rule of survival I’d devised when trying to navigate my life as a shining example of unexpected spinsterhood. The world, I’d learned, traveled in pairs—like Noah’s Ark—or with families. But people, perfumed and ready to party, could never resist mugging for a photo. Latching on to a camera could create a sense of security and purpose, something to hide behind. In my case, I had a tendency to cut off people’s heads in pictures. But that didn’t matter. Aiming a camera—a point-and-shoot or even just my smartphone—and pressing the shutter was a simple enough task that could occupy my time while couples were out on the dance floor.

The thing was that, after a while, there were only so many pictures to take and so many trips to make to the ladies’ room. At some point during social events, I always found myself alone at my table, surrounded by empty chairs, dirty plates, crumbs, and soiled napkins as I slugged back another sip of wine and wished—wished so hard that it hurt—that they’d hurry up and bring out the cake to signal that the party would soon be over.

That was the very dilemma I was facing at the bar mitzvah that day. The firstborn son of my old college roommate, Sarah, was celebrating his coming of age, while I was sitting alone at my empty table. I forced an admiring smile as dolled-up couples and pimply-faced teenagers crowded the dance floor, shaking and shimmying to a live rendition of “That’s the Way I Like It.”

At first, I didn’t even realize that Sarah’s youngest, five-year-old Jed Jr.—JJ—had climbed onto the chair next to mine. But when I felt a tug on my sleeve and heard him ask, “How come you don’t have a husband?” his presence was announced, loud and clear.

“How come you don’t have a wife?” I countered.

“‘Cause I’m too little,” he said. “What’s your excuse?”

I laughed. JJ certainly had no inhibitions. And he was a real cutie. His fair skin, disheveled angelic-blond hair, and saucer-like blue eyes guaranteed he’d break hearts someday. “Well, not everyone is married.”

“Mommy says your husband died.” Thanks, Sarah!

“He was my fiancĂ©. Not my husband.”

“What’s a fiancĂ©?”

I had to stop and think. Even though I wrote books for a living, award-winning romantic sagas with convoluted plots and subplots, my trying to define the word fiancé for a precocious child was like reconciling the meaning of the universe into a single sound bite.

“Well, before people get married, they get engaged, like when a man gives a ring to his future bride. Did you ever hear of that?”

“Of course. Everybody’s heard of that, dummy.” So much for little Prince Charming!

“Well, before the wedding, that’s what a bride or groom is called. After the engagement ring is given, you would say, ‘He’s my fiancĂ©,’ or in your case, you would probably say, ‘She is my fiancĂ©e.'”

“How did your fiancĂ© die?” What’s taking so long with that damn cake?

“Well, the thing is…”

I froze and stared at a tiny drop of red wine that had spilled on the starched white tablecloth, suddenly transported back three years to the night of my thirtieth birthday…

Kyle and I were having a beautiful, candlelit dinner on the patio at Andrea’s, my favorite Italian restaurant. We watched a mango-colored July sun slip down into the evening sky.

Kyle held up his glass. “Happy birthday, Meredith. I’m looking forward to spending all of your birthdays with you.”

That was the same thing he’d said when we’d first celebrated together on my twenty-third birthday…

Our bellies full of pasta, crab-filled calamari, veal parmigiana, espresso, and tiramisu, we walked arm in arm back to the lot where we’d parked the pickup. Kyle kept whistling the birthday song…

A St. Florian medal and a replica of Kyle’s fireman badge dangled from a chain looped over the rearview mirror. I leaned toward Kyle, and the light from the dashboard illuminated the warm pools of his brown eyes as I pressed my lips tenderly to his…

And then a jolt—the urgent sound of a fist rapping upon the driver’s side window. “Yo, get a room! We’re waitin’ for this spot. You leavin’ or what, dawg?”

My heart pounded in my chest.

The menacing, crazed face of an eighteen or nineteen-year-old kid filled the square window frame. He was wearing a ski cap, and lots of gold chains surrounded his neck.

Kyle reached to open the door.

“Don’t,” I said, my fingers firming around the sleeve of his polo shirt and his rock-solid arm.

“You only promised me dinner, not fireworks. C’mon. Let’s go.”

“No,” Kyle snapped. “This is exactly what’s wrong with the world.”

Even with both my hands clamped to his arm, Kyle swung open the door and forced the kid to take a step away.

“You stay here,” he ordered. “I’ll be right back.”

“Kyle, please,” I pleaded, but he broke free from my grasp and hopped out of the car…

Romancing the Clarksons series

by Tessa Bailey

Blurb:

When rescue looks like a whole lot of trouble . . .

The road trip was definitely a bad idea. Having already flambĂ©ed her culinary career beyond recognition, Rita Clarkson is now stranded in God-Knows-Where, New Mexico, with a busted-ass car and her three temperamental siblings, who she hasn’t seen in years. When rescue shows up—six-feet-plus of hot, charming sex on a motorcycle—Rita’s pretty certain she’s gone from the frying pan right into the fire . . .

Jasper Ellis has a bad boy reputation in this town, and he loathes it. The moment he sees Rita, though, Jasper knows he’s about to be sorely tempted. There’s something real between them. Something raw. And Jasper has only a few days to show Rita that he isn’t just for tonight—he’s forever.

Excerpt:

“Believe this, Rita. I think you’re gorgeous as sin and I need your mouth on mine.”

Rita nodded, meshing their wet lips together in the process. “I want to believe that. You might have to help me.”

“Thank Christ.”

Their mouths slanted and somehow—somehow—that feast of lips and tongue and teeth was even more potent than the night before. His knee rammed into the bike—almost as if his leg had tried to buckle—shooting pain up his right thigh, but it vanished under the pleasure. Vanished into vapor. The stroking, hot, abandon of Rita. They were both breathing through their noses so as not to break the voracious mouth-fucking they were engaging in, and that shouldn’t have been so all-out sexy. But it sure as shit was. They were attacking each other with seeking tongues and open lips, playing chicken to see who would give in first.

When her hands slipped under his shirt and pulled down on his belt buckle, putting pressure on Jasper’s cock, he cursed into her mouth, securing his fist in her hair like a goddamn barbarian. And she liked it, too. Why else would she be tugging on his belt, encouraging him to rock into the notch of her pussy? Too far. This was going too far. Any farther and they’d end up somewhere naked.

She’d leave the encounter with no doubt of his experience, because, hell, Jasper knew every button to press, when to change rhythm, when to be forceful or pull back. Knew it all. But Rita wouldn’t look at him the same way afterward. She’d see the local tramp, like everyone else.

She’d leave. And he’d have failed in his one attempt to be more to someone.

Jasper tore his mouth free, releasing a gruff exhale into her neck. “You have me ready to bust in my jeans, beautiful. I was smoother than this in high school.”

“That’s a scary thought,” she breathed out in a rush, her fists still curling in his shirt. “Was that the other half of your apology for last night? B-because I have to say, it was pretty effective.”

“At the risk of sounding arrogant, Rita, I haven’t even moved my hips yet. You’ve barely gotten a preview of how thoroughly I can…apologize.”

“Don’t leave me in suspense,” she whispered, those golden-brown eyes going as big as salad plates.

Don’t do it. You’ll have a hard-on for a decade. “If you agree to go out with me tonight, I’ll rub that wet, aching seam of yours with my own ache.”

Rita’s head fell back on a whimper. “Fine. Yes.”

highres-MJB_5140.jpgAuthor Info:

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days.

Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention.

She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of eight years and four-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

Excerpt:

“Whether you like it or not, Analise, you will marry and ensure the continuation of our bloodline,” Magnus, alpha of the Asmundr clan and Elder of all the bear clans, bellowed loud enough to rattle the hall windows. “Do you understand me?”

Analise stood before the dais and throne-like chair that marked her father’s status as alpha, gritted her teeth and answered with a nod. There was nothing else she could do. Her father ruled the clans with an iron rod, and argument was not tolerated. Ever.

Duty, honor and sacrifice.

The words had been drilled into her relentlessly from the day she’d been born. The day her mother had died giving birth to her. In one fateful moment, she’d not only stolen his wife, but also a bear-mate, one of the few women capable of bearing him an alpha son. He’d never forgiven her for that.

“Speak up, girl!” Magnus roared. The guards who flanked the dais looked ahead. All bears, they were used to their alpha’s rage and volume. There would be no help from that quarter. None of them would risk incurring her father’s wrath. Not for her.

“Yes, Father. I understand.”

The words were dust in her mouth and her stomach churned. She’d always known she would have to marry one day; she just hadn’t expected it to be so soon. Most of the time her father ignored her existence as long as the holding ran smoothly and when he did notice her, his disdain was apparent. It didn’t help that she was small and slight. Her appearance, though, had its advantages. Most people assumed she was years younger than she was. Being called a “girl” had gone from being an insult to a cloak to hide behind.

She’d thought she had years yet before her father realized she was of marriageable age. Years to study the books their ancestors had brought from the south lands after the wars and learn something useful. Years to learn how to survive in the snowy wastes outside the thick walls of the stronghold so that one day she could make her escape.

But she didn’t have years after all. She had to marry, and that marriage would not be of her choosing. Her father would trade her in marriage to further the clan’s interests and his own agenda.

Taking a deep breath, she ignored the crushing disappointment. Her happiness was not a consideration. It never had been.

“Good!” Magnus levered himself out of his chair, stomping down the steps to tower over her.

She looked up at him, her expression carefully neutral. Not too happy, but not cold. She’d perfected the look years ago. Nothing that could be considered insolent or anything other than the perfectly dutiful daughter in any way.

“The ball will begin at nine,” he rumbled, reaching out and gripping her chin in one massive hand.

The Sunnyside Series #1

by Jacie Floyd

THE FAST LANE WAS GOING NO WHERE…Despite growing up the glitzy world of fashion models and rock stars, that lifestyle holds no appeal for librarian Harper Simmons. She craves small-town normalcy and a place to call home. With a philanthropic grant in hand, Harper sets out for Sunnyside, IL, eager to reopen the town library. But the locals aren’t very welcoming to the woman in designer clothes—once again showing her she doesn’t fit in.

GROWING UP IN A SMALL TOWN…Wasn’t all it was cracked up to be for Dr. Zach Novak. Yes, Sunnyside had given him security and self-confidence—but now he’s smothered by their constant scrutiny and inevitable matchmaking. Longing to view the world from a less-restrictive stage, he’s making plans to head out of town…until he meets the enchanting new librarian.

WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE…There’s bound to be trouble. Harper and Zach’s physical and emotional connection has them steaming up the nights with a secret affair. When Zach leaves on a humanitarian mission, their relationship becomes public knowledge and Harper is blamed for driving him away. Allegations about her past further alienate the town, and she questions her desire to remain where she isn’t wanted. Even if Zach returns to Sunnyside, will he be lost to her forever?

It’s fantastic fun being there while Zach and Harper fall in love.  The great part is that it took half the book before they hooked up so that allowed for plenty of time for them to get to know each other better (and for us as well).

Zach has good guy syndrome.  He feels like he owes the town and does all he can to be everything to everybody, regardless of what it costs him.  But he’s getting close to getting out of town, too bad Harper comes into his life at the wrong time.  She’s sassy, caring, and tries hard to win over the town (but of course they don’t cooperate all that much).  And while Harper might be a fish out of water in Sunnyside, she’s got such a positive outlook on life that she can’t be bowed for long.  And spending time with Zach is enough to brighten anyone’s day – of course she finds him as wonderful as everyone else does.  He’s strong, compassionate, diplomatic, and has a solid head on his shoulders.  Unfortunately he’s so perfect that every woman is looking to get him hitched so he does everything he can to ignore his attraction to Harper … yeah, that goes as well as you’d expect 🙂

My only complaint is that I would have loved to see a little more development between Harper and her step-dad.  They don’t have a bad relationship but she hasn’t embraced him as he appears to want, not until the end anyway.  A little more attention could have made that moment even more heartwarming.   I’m hoping that we get more of Harper’s sister in a future book and that maybe that means more of her mom and step-dad as well.  Plus there are some interesting side characters that add a little extra oomph to this story and who are sure to be delightful if they get their own book.

As the first story in a new series, Everybody Knows is a great introduction to Sunnyside.  And while not all of the residents are appealing, there is great promise to what they could be and I can’t wait to see if Floyd delivers on it.
