Hawthorne Witches

by Savannah Hill

Blurb:

ย

Darkly erotic. Supremelyย powerful.Haley Hawthorne is a witch. She shuns her paranormal gifts, instead escapingย into a mundane, reclusive life as an accountant for her Uncle Eliโ€™s firm. Fiveย years earlier, Haley was kidnapped by Raden, brother of Lucifer, and heldย captive as his personal sex slave. She escaped but still bears the scars, bothย physical and emotional. Now sheโ€™s turned away from both magic and sex, andย sheโ€™s certain nothing will ever bring those lost things back into her life…

Damian, son to Lucifer, has renounced his right to the throne of Hell and hasย become a soldier for Adversus, hunting evil supernatural creatures on Earth.ย Unfortunately, heโ€™s powerless to witches, and this witch can read his mind. Heย canโ€™t decide what is more dangerousโ€”the irresistible attraction he feels forย her, or the intoxicating peace she gives him. One thing is certain, they bothย share a tortured past.

After Damian rescues her from an attack by monstrous djinn, Haley discovers theย dangerously seductive soldier has secrets of his own. One of them is theย collection of whips, ropes, handcuffs, and a leather riding crops he keepsย locked away, though he refuses to show her his โ€œMasterโ€ side. But when herย trust in him grows, she finds herself increasingly intrigued by all the kinkyย things heโ€™s hiding. But Damian has been given a new mission to kill a monster.ย A monster that turns out to be her uncle…ย

Excerpt:
ย

Her fingers movedย automatically, stumbling only slightly over the same heavy melodies sheโ€™d onceย played obsessively for hours. The bedroom door opened, and Damian walked intoย the room, breaking her reverie.

โ€œOh, hi.โ€ Heย stared at her in surprise, holding a towel low around his waist, and Haleyย caught herself gaping at the defined muscles of his upper body, adorned withย scars. โ€œI didnโ€™t know you were in here, Iโ€™m just gonna grab some clothes.โ€

His half nakedย body had her heart beating erratically in her chest, and Haley tried not toย look at him as he pulled open a dresser drawer. She suddenly realized he wasย reaching for his own clothes. โ€œIsโ€ฆis this your room?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Heย retrieved a stack of folded clothes from the drawer. โ€œYou can stay in hereย though, Iโ€™ll sleep somewhere else.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so sorโ€”โ€ย Haley abruptly stopped speaking as he casually took off the towel, and she letย out a barely audible gasp. Turning away from him, she brought her hand to coverย her eyes. โ€œIโ€™m…I can goโ€ฆโ€

Her pulse raced atย the sound of rustling cotton as he dressed a few feet away from her.

โ€œYou play guitar?โ€

โ€œUhโ€ฆno, notย reallyโ€ฆ I meanโ€ฆ I donโ€™t play well.โ€ She kept her eyes hidden from himย with one hand while she loosely held the neck of the guitar with the other,ย aware that her dress had hiked up around her hips in her cross-legged position.

โ€œYou can lookย now.โ€

She opened herย eyes as he sat next to her, wearing a white T-shirt over gray sweatpants. โ€œIย thought it sounded really good.โ€

Looking down atย the beautiful instrument in her lap, recognition sparked. โ€œIs this yours?โ€

With a nod, he gotย up to pull her red guitar from the wall. โ€œWhen did you learn how to play?โ€

โ€œWhen I wasย younger,โ€ she nervously held his shiny blue Les Paul, unsure where to put herย hands, โ€œbut I got a little obsessed with it when I stayed in here for a fewย months.โ€

Damian sat downย with hers and started tuning it. โ€œSo this is your room…โ€ Heย concentrated on the strings in his hand. โ€œAnd this is your guitar?โ€ย โ€œRed Velvet.โ€ Sheย nodded, trying to keep her breathing even.

โ€œYou named yourย guitar?โ€ He smiled at her.ย Haley relaxed aย little as he tuned the strings. โ€œI was very close with it for a while.โ€ Sheย took a steadying breath. โ€œIt kind of felt like therapy.โ€

โ€œThat was afterย you escaped?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ She loweredย her gaze.

โ€œI actually tookย this room because it had an amp in it.โ€ Damian mindlessly played a slow melodyย on her guitar.

โ€œWhen did youย start playing?โ€ The sound sent a tingling warmth through her, and she foundย herself staring at his fingers as they expertly moved along the strings.

โ€œWhen I was a kid.ย It came naturally to me.โ€

Her focus dimmedย at the powerful chords. โ€œSoโ€ฆyou were a kidโ€ฆat one timeโ€ฆโ€

He nodded. โ€œIโ€™veย aged normally so far, like a human, but eventually Iโ€™ll stop aging.โ€

โ€œHow old are you?โ€

โ€œThirty-two.โ€ Heย cast his gaze downward.ย Haley lookedย thoughtfully at the bedspread, listening to the haunting music. โ€œIโ€™mย twenty-seven.โ€

She volunteeredย the information. โ€œI feel like Iโ€™m eighty, I never go out anywhere.โ€ Her gazeย flickered to him. โ€œAre you really only thirty-two?โ€

He seemedย surprised by her remark and looked back down to the strings. โ€œItโ€™s a lot olderย than you.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re immortal.โ€ย She gave him a half-smile. โ€œYou could be thousands of years old.โ€

Review:

I still read the occasional paranormal romance but itโ€™s definitely not my main genre right now so Iโ€™m not sure what all is out there. ย Which means Iโ€™m not the best to say how original this world is :), but I think that Hill does a great job of creating one that is interesting.ย  Itโ€™s got just the right touch of real world to make you think that it could be happening around you but yetย be full of witches, demons, monsters and supernatural soldiers.

Haley went through something horrible and Iโ€™m impressed by how well sheโ€™s recovered.ย  Sheโ€™s still not completely healed and hesitates to get intimate with any man, especially the nephew of the man who held her captive (and someone who saw her in that situation).ย  But being able to see into Damianโ€™s mind helps I think.ย  She starts to understand him a little better and see past who he used to be.

Damian may be the son of Satan but he is now working for the other side, fighting demons and monsters.ย  Working with her brothers introduces him to Haley and spending time with the sexy witch draws him in.ย  But can he breach the walls that her time in Hell built โ€ฆ and what happens when heโ€™s ordered to kill her uncle?

I love the relationship and trust that builds between these two.ย  They each have reasons to be wary of the other but time (and the glimpses they get of each otherโ€™s thoughts) start to forge something sweet.ย  Damian is amazingly patient and understanding of all of Haleyโ€™s hangups.ย  And sheโ€™s definitely strong, she just has to remember that.ย  Thereโ€™s danger mixed in with the love story, as expected with most paranormal romances, and it adds that extra oomph to the book.

Because it is the first in the series, there is a lot of extra explanation that has to happen, but I donโ€™t feel like it bogged things down.ย  I do, though, think there were times where it might have been missing some of the history related to this story.ย  Iโ€™m not sure if that was intentional or not, because they werenโ€™t big things but just enough that I wanted a little more info.ย  Iโ€™m curious to see where Hill goes from here and whether we get some of those answers when the rest of the Hawthornes gets their stories.

The Holton Series consists of four sweet, simple, and relatively short romance novels.ย

HOLTON box set 1440x1717 PNG

Convince Me

Anna West just wants to start over in a new town far away from her past. The only child of a mixed race couple, Anna learned about the ugly side of human behavior at an early age. After watching her abusive father mistreat her mother, Anna knows that love is not for her.

Steven Carson has always known what he wanted, and from the moment he saw her, he wanted Anna. Steven is ready for love. He is ready to settle down, start a family, and he knows Anna is the one for him. Now all he has to do is convince her.

Notice Me

Andrew Moore has always thought of Victoria as family. She is his best friendโ€™s little sister and his little sisterโ€™s best friend, but recently something has changed. Andrew is thinking about Victoria in a completely different way. She will never fit into his quiet, conservative world. They are too different to have a future together, but he cannot stop noticing her.

Victoria Carson has been in love with Andrew since her sixteenth birthday, but Andrew never noticed her as anything other than the girl next door. She fled from her hometown so that she wouldnโ€™t have to watch Andrew build a life with someone else. But things have changed. Andrew is now a widower, and Victoria has returned home. It is time to make him notice her.

Trust Me

Rachel Lewis hides her looks behind dark framed glasses and drab clothes. As the head librarian in Holton, she is satisfied with her life and her appearance. Rachel isn’t looking for love or a relationship, but Paul captivates her. He lives in a completely different world, but she wants him more than she has ever wanted any other man.

Paul Hart is handsome, rich, and successful. As the owner of a thriving business, he is happy with short-term relationships and jaded women. Paul has been betrayed too many times to trust a woman, but Rachel intrigues him. She isn’t like any other woman he has ever known. Can he learn to trust her?

Forgive Me

Growing up, Mitch Carson had always dreamed of leaving Holton, Texas, traveling the world, and writing life altering stories. As an investigative journalist, he made those dreams come true, but he left behind the only woman he ever loved. That was his greatest mistake. Mitch has returned home to see if she can forgive him for leaving her when she needed him the most.

In high school, Emily Fairview had fallen deeply, madly, and completely in love with Mitch. The two of them planned a life together far away from Holton, but when Emilyโ€™s family needed her, she chose to stay. Mitch chose to leave. Fifteen years later Mitch is back and wants a second chance, but Emily doesnโ€™t know if she can forgive him.

Excerpt:

I sit quietly at the Starbucks on the corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevard, pretending to work on my laptop. Two tables away from me and next to the condiment counter sits my client, Sarah, drinking coffee and pretending to read a book. This is our second day at this Starbucks and we have already been here for forty minutes. I am beginning to wonder if we should re-evaluate our plan.

Suddenly a wave of hushed excitement spreads through the store. Everyoneโ€™s eyes are glued to the swinging front doors as Ryan Scott strides through with his shoulders back and chin up. Everyoneโ€™s eyes, that is, but Sarahโ€™s. She looks at me without turning her head, and I give her the tiniest of nods before spinning back around to stare. She responds to my nod by feigning interest in her Jane Austen novel.

Great Sarah! Keep calm. I know you want to burst inside, but play it cool.

Ryanโ€™s eyes quickly scan the room. Before they return to the menu board, they briefly linger on Sarah, the only person who appears not to notice him. He orders his grande latte with a double shot of espresso and leans smugly against the counter with his arms folded across his chest. He appears to be staring into space, yet every few moments his eyes fall back to Sarah, who has still not looked up from her book.

The barista calls his name, and he pauses to make sure everyone hears it before he reaches for the drink. When he turns around, Sarah is beginning to pack her things, leaving the Austen novel on the table. He heads toward the condiment counter for his regular three sugars. Just as we had rehearsed, Sarah stands up, still focused on packing up, and he tries to pass her. He stops for a moment, Sarah blocking his way.

Thank goodness these celebrities are creatures of habit. It makes my job so much easier.

โ€œOh, Iโ€™m sorry, I didnโ€™t see you there.โ€ She breathes calmly as she speaks to him. She slings her navy-blue Coach bag over her shoulder and smiles, her head leaning to the side, her eyes soft.

โ€œThatโ€™s all right,โ€ Ryan responds. He stands waiting for her to move but blocks her exit. He half smiles at her.

โ€œOkay then.โ€ Sarah glances toward the door behind him, still smiling.

โ€œOh, now Iโ€™m in your way,โ€ he declares as he steps aside and watches Sarah move toward the door. โ€œWait, hey, your book!โ€

I exhale. The one contingency worked as planned. Should be easy from here on out, as long as she sticks to the script.

She stops and turns back, hiding her smile. Ryan stands there, holding her book in his hands. โ€œJane Austen, huh.โ€ He smirks. โ€œIโ€™m shooting a movie based on one of her books next month.โ€

โ€œOh, youโ€™re an actor. What book?โ€ she asks, pretending not to know.

โ€œPride and Prejudice.โ€ He seems intrigued by Sarahโ€™s indifference. โ€œWell, here you goโ€”โ€ He ends his sentence by fishing for her name.

โ€œSarah,โ€ she finishes for him.

โ€œSarah,โ€ he repeats, revealing a slow, sexy smile, โ€œmaybe we can have a cup of coffee next time.โ€ He holds out the book but is not loosening his grip.

โ€œYes, maybe.โ€ She takes the book from him, and he lets her. โ€œThanks.โ€ Then she is out the door. Ryan turns and grabs his three sugars, looking around the room again to make sure everyone is still watching. Before he finishes stirring them in, I am out on the street and dialing Sarahโ€™s cell number.

โ€œWow! That was unbelievable! I canโ€™t believe it worked!โ€ she cries.

โ€œYou were awesome! Did you see the way he looked at you?โ€ I ask.

โ€œYes! I did!โ€ She pauses. โ€œThank you so much, Olivia. You really made my dream come true. I mean, I never could have done this without you. Iโ€™m going to recommend you to all my friends,โ€ she rattles on.

Thrilled that all went as planned, I head back down Santa Monica Boulevard toward my office.

Angelina Goode began writing as a teenager. Though her first works were poems about love-struck teenagers, she grew her craft while earning her degree in Journalism and Creative Writing. A former grade school teacher that loved teaching children to write, she enjoys finding creative ways to present everyday events. Now she primarily writes light-hearted contemporary womenโ€™s fiction. She lives in Los Angeles where she enjoys the occasional celebrity sighting and year-round sun.

Angelina started gaining first-hand fan and celebrity experience as a devoted follower of her generationโ€™s boy band. Her experience shifted in college when she interned in the promotions department for a Los Angeles based radio station and for the public relations department of a network television station. There she was able to learn about the ins and outs of promoting celebrities and all the backstage activities that are rarely seen by the public eye. She was also able to observe fansโ€™ behavior from an objective perspective, seeing what it looks like to an outside observer.

Now she combines her experience as a loyal fan attending numerous concerts and meet and greets every year, her brief but educational stint in the entertainment industry, and a highly active imagination to create fiction for celebrity lovers of all ages.

R P Channing, Thirst: Blood of my Blood

I don’t usually post about YA stories but there was something I just couldn’t resist about this one. ย There is something just so darn intriguing about it.

Book Title - Thirst Blood of my Blood

Vampires, Demons & Ghosts.

Welcome to STARKFIELD ACADEMY.

*****

Thirst by R P Channing CoverThirst: Blood of my Blood

by R P Channing

240+ Pages

WITH BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHS

Genres:ย Young Adult Romance |ย Paranormal Romance |ย High School |ย Vampires, Demons, Witches |ย Dark Fantasy |ย Horror

Blurb:

~ Kira Sutherland ~

After a near fatal accident (and getting cheated on by her ‘boyfriend’), and beating up the lead cheerleader (with whom the boyfriend cheated…), and being labeled as having ‘issues’ in her school because she, uhm, sees ghosts, Kira is left with two choices:

1. Continue her ‘therapy’ (where she’s told the ghost is a hallucination and also gets her legs ogled too often…)

Or

2. Go to Starkfield Academy, a boarding school for “Crazies and Convicts” (as the social media sites call them.)

She chooses the latter…

~ Cory Rand ~

Cory Rand has not had an easy life. His mother died in a car accident when he was twelve, and so did his mother’s best friend…sort of. You see, Janice made a promise to take care of Cory just before she died, and so she lingers. Undead. A ghost that watches out for him.

Brought up in an abusive home, Cory quickly falls into a life of disreputable behavior. After his third offense (which was prompted by a girl, as usual – he has a weakness) he’s left with two choices:

  1. Be tried as an adult and share a cell with a guy named Bubba (he thinks…)

Or

2. Go to Starkfield Academy, which Cory is pretty sure is run by vampires. But, hey, at least he’ll get an education.

He chooses the latter…

It’s at Starkfield that Kira meets Cory Rand, a boy with an insatiable Rage who sees ghosts, too. As well as other things, other things from his past, things that confuse him, things like fire and witches and demons.

Things he’s always ignored.

Until now.

PROLOGUE

-1-

The Puppy Eyes

My life was perfect.

I had the perfect shoes and the perfect friends and I lived in the perfect house. My nails were perfect and my hair was perfect (except on Sundays, it was always windy on Sundays) and I had the perfect clothes. My lips were a perfect red and my hair perfectly straight. My eyeshadow was perfect, my hips were…okay, and my waist…well…also okay. Nothing was wrong in my life.

But then there was Jack.

Jack was a problem.

He needed to go. I mean, when youโ€™re dead, youโ€™re dead! I had told him this endlessly. Somehow, Jack didnโ€™t get it. I mean, I felt sorry for the guy. Sure. Being stuck between this life and the next. But just because I found him, does that mean I needed to keep him?

I think not!

Sadly, when Jack got that look in his eyes, that weary, almost teary (if his tear-ducts worked) look, I melted. I just couldnโ€™t send him away. Not even Jack knew where he would go after he died.

Would he, like, die? As in โ€” dead, nada, kaput, finito, gone, no more? Bye bye, sayonara, ciao, hasta la vista baby and all that?

I couldnโ€™t have that on my conscience. No way.

I lay on my bed, wondering what to do about him. โ€œJaaaaaaack,โ€ I hollered.

โ€œJaaaaaaack!โ€

Still no answer.

โ€œJack!โ€

Jack…materialized.

His eyes rolled down to the ground. He was making those puppy eyes again. โ€œJack, I told you not to do that. I told you not to play on my sympathies.โ€

His puppy eyes became worse.

His skin was gray and, well, dead.

โ€œOh, brother,โ€ I said. โ€œI have to do something about you. If mom finds out I have another โ€˜imaginary friendโ€™ โ€” at my age โ€” well, Iโ€™d die of embarrassment. But, like, really die. Not like you.โ€ I wondered about this. Would I die? Was Jack a freak accident, or did all people live on like him? Think of the cemeteries…

The idea excited me somewhat.

โ€œWhat would you have me do, Miss Kira?โ€

โ€œKnock off the Miss Kira crap. I told you itโ€™s just Kira.โ€

โ€œYes, Miss Kira.โ€

The dead. Thereโ€™s just no reasoning.

โ€œFine, Miss Kira it is then.โ€ Rover barked like a lunatic in the garden. No one else might be able to see Jack, but I was sure my dog could.

โ€œI have to do something about this,โ€ I mumbled.

-2-

The Rat

Mike knocked on the door before I had time to leave the house. Mike was the guy I thought (at the time) was perfect.

โ€œWho is it?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s me, baby.โ€

Baby, urgh โ€” I wasnโ€™t his baby. I dated Mike because he was the quarterback, because girls are supposed to like the quarterback, because itโ€™s just so darn perfect to be seen with the quarterback, like weโ€™re brainwashed into thinking these things from the first romantic doll set mom buys us.

This was my previous life.

โ€œMike.โ€

โ€œUh-huh. Gonna let me in?โ€

So you can try rub me up and then complain when I donโ€™t let you? This, dear reader, was the big problem with Mike. The second we first kissed, his hand went way too far south for me to be comfortable โ€” and I pulled back.

Mike suddenly wasnโ€™t so perfect.

โ€œUhm, I was just on my way out,โ€ I said.

โ€œKira? Cโ€™mon, open the door.โ€ He sounded upset. โ€œIs there someone in there with you?โ€

Boys. As if.

I didnโ€™t know much about love (nothing, actually) but I knew this wasnโ€™t it.

โ€œUhm, nowโ€™s not the time, Mike.โ€

โ€œCโ€™mon, Kira, whatโ€™s going on?โ€ He banged harder.

When in doubt…lie. I opened the door a crack. โ€œThereโ€™s a dead rat in the house, Mike. Been here for days. I gotta go get some detergent and stuff to handle the stench.โ€

Mike stepped back. He peered through the crack of the door.

โ€œItโ€™s really bad,โ€ I said.

โ€œIโ€™ll drive you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m afraid the smellโ€ โ€” I stuck my armpit to my nose โ€” โ€œhas found its way all over me. Iโ€™ll drive myself.โ€

โ€œO โ€” okay. Fine.โ€ And then he grinned like he wanted something. โ€œLater? My place?โ€

Urgh. โ€œUhm, sure…er…later. Not sure when though.โ€

โ€œSix.โ€

I fought the urge to roll my eyes. According to girls at school, he was apparently so damn good looking โ€” theoretically. But for me personally, he did nothing. Moved nothing. Twisted nothing. โ€œLook, I gotta go, Mike. I gotta โ€” โ€

โ€œKira.โ€ His eyes grew stern. โ€œYouโ€™ve been avoiding me…โ€

Bingo! Well done contestant number one! And what have you won? A brain!

I tilted my head. โ€œMike, look, this…rat โ€” I need to deal with it. Weโ€™ll talk later, okay? Bye.โ€ I closed the door, not waiting for an answer, and peered out the peep hole. Mike hung around for a second, shoulders wide and eyes glaring straight at me through the door. Could he see me? Did he know I was looking at him?

He kicked something off the ground, and I had the distinct impression he mouthed the word Bitch before leaving. But I wasnโ€™t sure…

-3-

The Mack

โ€œRoll down the window, Jack.โ€ Jack was recently dead, so he still had a smell about him. (Which only I could smell…)

I had purposely skipped breakfast. Maybe Jack would help me lose weight. I was (still am) a little wide, although it had never stopped guys flirting with me. I know how to dress.

But I could be skinnier.

Lucy Rogers was skinny. All bones and no boobs.

Charlene Carverton was a babe. Cheerleader. Big chest (which she pushed out generously with a push-up โ€” if only guys knew). Toned thighs. Charlene only dated college boys (back then), which I still think is pretty gross for a girl her age.

โ€œHeโ€™s not for you,โ€ Jack said out the blue.

โ€œHmm?โ€

โ€œThis…Mike โ€” heโ€™s wrong for you, Miss Kira.โ€ For all Jackโ€™s faults (mainly, being dead), he has a good heart. Factually, probably itโ€™s why I kept him around at first.

โ€œYou think I donโ€™t know that?โ€

โ€œThen why donโ€™t you dump him?โ€

I braked at a stop sign. Looked left and right. โ€œBecause Iโ€™d look like an idiot. I flirted with him and showed interest, and one kiss later I canโ€™t stand the sight of him.โ€

โ€œSo dump him.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not that simple. Kids at school โ€” they can be vicious. I have to let it fade slowly. If I drop the bomb on him, Iโ€™ll never hear the end of it through senior year.โ€

โ€œAnd you care?โ€

Yes, I did. Forget Guantanamo, schools are rough. โ€œYou donโ€™t understand, Jack. Maybe school was different in your day. But in mine, well, we walk through metal detectors.โ€

โ€œSchools werenโ€™t too different in my day.โ€ I noted the sadness in his voice.

โ€œYou okay?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m dead.โ€

Right. โ€œYou miss…your life?โ€

Jack shrugged. โ€œI like being with you, Miss Kira. And I donโ€™t remember much of my life. I think Iโ€™m in limbo.โ€

โ€œLimbo?โ€

โ€œYes, like I have some unfinished business. If only I could remember…what…it is…โ€ He scratched his head.

โ€œAny ideas?โ€

โ€œWell, it canโ€™t be love. If it were love, Iโ€™d be a vampire. Thatโ€™s who teenage girls fall in love with these days.โ€

โ€œA vampire? Thatโ€™s just what I need โ€” two undead beings stalking me.โ€

โ€œI feel I have something to do around you, Miss Kira. I donโ€™t know what, but something. Something important.โ€

I looked over at him. โ€œMe?โ€

I was still looking at him when I missed the stop sign.

The Mack truck drove straight into us.

R P Channing started writing three years ago, but never published anything even after churning out over a million words of fiction. Thirst: Blood of my Blood is the first book he dared to publish. When asked why, he said, โ€œBecause itโ€™s the first thing I wrote that my wife actually enjoyed reading.โ€ When not hammering away (most literally) at his keyboard, he can be found buried in a book, reading anything from romance to horror to young adult to non-fiction to comedy.

Excerpt:

His dark eyes heated her with memories as he strode toward her. His long legs ate the ground in giant slices, his khakis and sports jacket declaring him in the middle of a work day. He stopped in front of her, his broad shoulders blocking the sun and casting his handsome face inย shadows. But she didnโ€™t have to see to know his jaw would be peppered with the stubble that seemed to grow in seconds after he shaved. Her fingers โ€“ her body โ€“ remembered the texture of that rasp well.

Her breath caught somewhere in her chest.

He folded his arms over his chest, just under the Hurricanes logo stitched on the front of his jacket. โ€œWelcome to the States, Erika. No one mentioned your intention to visit. I thought you donโ€™t like sports.โ€

โ€œAnd yet, here I am.โ€ And in need of privacy out of the bright Louisiana sun and the even brighter curious eyes of his team and staff. She needed space and courage to tell him why sheโ€™d made this unexpected journey across the Atlantic to this muggy bayou state. โ€œThis is not an official royal visit.โ€

โ€œAnd youโ€™re not in uniform.โ€ His eyes glided over her wrap around dress.

โ€œIโ€™m out of the service now.โ€ About to return to school to be a nurse, the career field sheโ€™d hoped to pursue in the military but they would not allow her such an in-the-field position, instead preferring to dress her up and trot her around as a figure-head translator. โ€œI am here for a conference on homeopathic herbs and scents.โ€ A part of her passion in the nursing field, and a totally made up excuse for being here today.

โ€œAre you here to share specially scented deodorant to my players? Because they could certainly use it.โ€ His mouth tipped with a smile.

โ€œAre you interested in such a line?โ€ Still jet-lagged from the transatlantic flight, she was ill-prepared to exchange pleasantries.

โ€œIs that why you are here? For business?โ€

She could not just banter with him. She simply could not. โ€œPlease, can we go somewhere private to talk?โ€

He searched her eyes with for a long moment before gesturing over his shoulder. โ€œIโ€™m in the middle of a meeting with sponsors. How about supper?โ€

โ€œI am not here for seduction,โ€ she stated bluntly.

โ€œOkay.โ€ His eye brows shot upward. โ€œI thought I asked you to join me for gumbo, not sex. But now that weโ€™re talking about sex–โ€

โ€œWe are not.โ€ She cut him short. โ€œFinish your meeting if you must, but I need to speak with you as soon as possible. Privately. Unlessย you want your personal business and mine overheard by all of your team straining to listen.โ€

She definitely was not ready for them to hear she was pregnant with the heir to the Reynaud family dynasty.

Nothing is more heart-warming than kissesย from the pet who adores you and the man who loves you, so snuggle up withย VALENTINE PETS & KISSES โ€” an anthology of fourteen sweet romances from USAย Today bestselling and award-winning authors โ€” and strike the perfect mood forย moonlit walks and candlelight dinners with your pet and sweetheart.
ย

Check out descriptions and excerpts from two of the stories featured in the anthology!

Inflamed – Jade Kerrion
Debra Martinez doesnโ€™t believe in happyย endings, until Sean Orr, Havre de Graceโ€™s newest firefighter, shows her and herย son, Aidan, a new and beautiful kind of โ€œnormal.โ€ But the happiness canโ€™t lastโ€”notย for Sean who is on the run from his own past.

Excerpt

Tension stiffened Debraโ€™s back, but she smiled at the men, two ofย whom she recognized.
โ€œWhat can I get for you?โ€ย
โ€œFive medium coffees for the boys down at the house.โ€ Jack Landonย leaned against the counter, flexing an impressive bicep. He was obviously onย duty even though he wore street clothes; firefighting in a small town likeย Havre de Grace was a casual sort of thing.ย
โ€œDidnโ€™t know it took three grown men to buy five coffees,โ€ sheย teased as she filled the order.ย
โ€œWanted to show the new guy the town.โ€ Jack jabbed his finger overย his shoulder at the tall young man standing behind him. โ€œSean Orr. Heโ€™s takingย Larryโ€™s place.โ€ย
โ€œHey.โ€ Debra flashed him a dimpled smile. She estimated his age asย mid-twenties, a good eight years younger than she was. โ€œWelcome to Havre deย Grace.โ€ She set four cups in a cup holder made of recycled paper and thenย placed the fifth cup in the middle. โ€œWill that be all, or would you likeย anything else?โ€ย
Ray Peterson, the third firefighter, pushed past Sean and Jack andย rested both elbows on the table. He leaned forward, and Debra retreated fromย his leer even though her cleavage was concealed behind her turtleneck sweater. ย Ray chuckled as if he sensed her unease and pressed out his cheek with hisย tongue. โ€œDo you want to come over this weekend? Itโ€™s cold out; great night forย keeping warm together.โ€ย
โ€œArenโ€™t you and Andrea still together?โ€ย
โ€œSheโ€™s out of town this weekend. Perfect, you know, for you.โ€ Rayย snorted, the sound derisive.ย
Jack laughed and elbowed Ray. โ€œLetโ€™s get out of here, man, beforeย the coffees get cold.โ€
He led the way out of the store, but amid the quiet chatter ofย surrounding conversations, Debra heard Sean ask quietly, โ€œWhatโ€™s her name?โ€ย
Rayโ€™s answer slapped her moments before the door slammed shut onย their voices. โ€œSheโ€™s the other woman.โ€ย

Remember When – Hope Welsh
Laura and Brent really tried to make theirย marriage work, but in the end, it just wasn’t meant to be. Or was it? When theyย meet to discuss joint custody of their Akita, they discover they have much moreย to talk about other than the dog.ย

Excerpt
ย
The ringing of her phone pulled Laura out of her writing โ€˜zoneโ€™. Sheย sighed and answered it without even checking the caller ID. โ€œHello?โ€ย
There was no one speaking on the other end, but she could hear theย breathing.ย
โ€œHello? Is this some sort of a prank?โ€ Laura had had these kinds of callย before, and had them do silly things like this.ย
The phone disconnected and she tossed it back on the table. A check ofย the phone logs showed it was a blocked number. Likely some silly kid.ย
Laura sighed when the phone rang again less than five minutes later.ย This time, she did check the caller ID and realized it was Callie.ย
She signed againโ€”inwardlyโ€”as she listened to the phone call. The lastย thing she wanted to do was go on a search and rescue tonight. Valentineโ€™s Dayย was two days away, and sheโ€™d been looking forward to sitting home and moping.ย It was their anniversary.ย
She rolled her eyes at her own musings. Going out on a search might beย just the thing. She looked down at Angel, the Akita that was her partner inย SAR. โ€œWhat do you say, girl? Got a search in you?โ€ย
โ€œWhat?โ€ she said, her mind once again on the phone call.ย
โ€œYouโ€™ll be working with Brent,โ€ Callie said patiently. โ€œHeโ€™s the onlyย medic we have in the area right now.โ€ย
Laura didnโ€™t groan, but she wanted to. The last person she wanted toย spend possibly the next few days with was her soon-to-be ex, Brent Anders. โ€œUm,ย Callie, I donโ€™t really need a partner.โ€ย
โ€œYou know the rules, Laura. We send out teams of two for a reason. Oneย with the dog and one with the medical training. You two are good together.โ€ย
We had been good together, Laura thought bitterly. But, that was before. โ€œI donโ€™t ย suppose I canย talk you out of using him?โ€ย

Amelia Parker has booked a two-week vacation to Maui to surprise her boyfriend on their second anniversary. She works as a concierge in a boutique hotel in Manhattan. Her boss demands she cancels her vacation because her back-up has quit, leaving him without coverage for a major convention. Amelia wonโ€™t be able to get her money back and her boss wonโ€™t reimburse her. When she stands firm about still going on the vacation she booked a year ago, she gets fired. Amelia goes back home to her boyfriendโ€™s apartment that she shares with him. She catches him in bed with the barista of her favorite coffee shop.

Amelia is out of a job

Out of an apartment

Out of a relationship

And shit out of coffee

When Amelia arrives in Maui, newly single and unemployed, sheโ€™s shocked to discover the resort she booked is actually a ramshackle little beachside hotel. At least the scenery is easy on the eyesโ€”as is the toned, laid-back snorkel instructor, โ€œDude.โ€ After two weeks of sun, serenity, and mind-blowing sex, she even accepts a job as the hotelโ€™s concierge. But what Amelia really wants is to relaunch the place completely. And that means convincing the absentee Wall Street billionaire owner, Samuel Kincaide, to take a chance on her.

Samuel has a plan, too: selling off every last reminder of his former life and chilling all day, every day as his slacker alter ego . . . Dude. He loves his romps in the ocean, and under the sheets, with the feisty Amelia. If she discovers his true identity, her boundless enthusiasm and innovative business plan will seriously diminish his hammock time. But when Amelia runs into real trouble on the island, heโ€™ll put everything on the line to keep her safe. He just hopes that the woman whoโ€™s falling for Dude will feel the same about Samuel.

Advance Praise for Lifeโ€™s a Beach

โ€œAn unputdownable, laugh-out-loud read, Lifeโ€™s a Beach is filled with humor and heart.โ€โ€”New York Times bestselling author Cherry Adair

โ€œI canโ€™t remember the last book that made me smile this much. Jamie Schmidt is ridiculously talentedโ€”she does fun and flirty every bit as well as she does hot and sexy, with just right amount of emotional punch.โ€โ€”USA Today bestselling author Lauren Layne

*****

Excerpt:

This couldnโ€™t be happening to her. When sheโ€™d seen the ad for the all-inclusive resort in Hawaii last year, it had been like a dream come true. Fishing around under her desk, Amelia pulled out the brochure. It was creased and wrinkled from her having looked at it a million times. The hotel was shaped like a horseshoe around a gigantic pool and tiki bar. The beach in the distance showed cerulean blue waves with just a hint of whitecaps. She wanted to be on that beach so much, her teeth ached.

โ€œCan you have this dry-cleaned?โ€ A guest shoved a large plastic bag over the counter, knocking over her pirateโ€™s chest of wrapped candy.

โ€œSure,โ€ Amelia said, taking the bag. Once she got the guestโ€™s room number and laundry preferences, she tagged the bag and called in a pickup at one of the local laundries. Then she booked a few more theater and dinner reservations and gave out some walking maps of the city. By the time she got back to her brochure, it was around three in the afternoon.

โ€œNine a.m. island time,โ€ she said, dialing the resortโ€™s number.

It rang and rang. No one picked up. No one picked up an hour later, either. Finally, around five oโ€™clock her time, a groggy voice drawled into the phone.

โ€œWhatchu want?โ€

โ€œUm, is this the Palekaiko Beach Resort?โ€

โ€œIt is, sistah,โ€ the voice said in a warm, smiling voice that made her toes tingle. โ€œWhat can I do for you?โ€

She could almost picture him leaning against a desk like hers. Only his view wasnโ€™t icy sleet and gray drabness, but lush greens and ocean blue. Shaking herself back into the present, she said, โ€œI need to change my reservation.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, but I donโ€™t know where Hani is right now.โ€

โ€œWhoโ€™s Hani?โ€ she asked.

He yawned. โ€œHeโ€™s in charge of all that.โ€

โ€œWho are you?โ€

โ€œThey call me Dude.โ€

โ€œSeriously?โ€

โ€œYa, as in Iโ€™m the dude that teaches snorkeling. The phone was harshing my buzz, so I answered it.โ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t it before noon there?โ€ Amelia was giddy at the thought of drinking before noon.

โ€œItโ€™s five oโ€™clock somewhere, sunshine.โ€

That it is. She scowled at the mermaid clock on the wall. โ€œLook, do you know when Hani will be back?โ€

He sighed. โ€œNo. In fact, I donโ€™t see Kai or Makoa around either. Mustโ€™ve gone surfing.โ€

Ameliaโ€™s breath caught. โ€œHow are the waves, there?โ€

โ€œHere, weโ€™ve got some storm surge but down the coast thereโ€™s some beach break.โ€

โ€œAre they . . . gnarly?โ€ Amelia tried out some slang.

His husky laugh sent a shiver up her spine. โ€œYou should come see for yourself, sweet thing.โ€

There was one little problem with that. Her excitement deflated like a balloon, complete with the raspberry noise. โ€œThatโ€™s actually the reason why Iโ€™m calling. I need to switch dates on my reservation. I know itโ€™s last-minute, but my boss canceled my vacation.โ€

โ€œSounds like an asshole.โ€

Vindication surged through her and she looked quickly around, but the desk crew were the only ones around. โ€œHe is,โ€ she whispered. โ€œHe wants me to move my two-week vacation to May.โ€

โ€œAw, honey, Iโ€™m afraid we canโ€™t do that.โ€

โ€œWhy not? Itโ€™s all right if you have to charge me a fee.โ€

โ€œNah, you donโ€™t understand. We ainโ€™t gonna be here in May.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ She heard a screeching sound in her head.

โ€œThe big kahuna is selling and the new owners will tear it down to build condos.โ€

โ€œOh, no!,โ€ she said. โ€œCan I get my money back?โ€

โ€œWe can credit your card.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Amelia said. โ€œI paid by check. Monthly. For over a year. I sent in the last payment a month ago.โ€

โ€œHm,โ€ he said. โ€œWell, Iโ€™m sure something can be done. The kahuna is a big shot. If you write him a letter, he can fix you up.โ€

Ameliaโ€™s hand was shaking as she grabbed her pen. โ€œWhatโ€™s his name?โ€

โ€œSamuel Kincaide.โ€

โ€œI see.โ€ She tried to keep the tears out of her voice.

โ€œDonโ€™t cry, wahine.โ€

She didnโ€™t trust her voice. โ€œI d-donโ€™t want my money back. I want to go on my dream vacation.โ€

โ€œThen come on.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll get in trouble,โ€ she said with a watery giggle.

โ€œI get it,โ€ Dude said. โ€œBut your kahuna sounds like a grade-A prick.โ€

โ€œSo does yours.โ€

He barked out a loud laugh. โ€œI tell you whatโ€”you come on down and Iโ€™ll buy you a drink.โ€

She sniffled. โ€œWhatโ€™s the weather like down there?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a little chilly today. Itโ€™s about seventy-five.โ€

Amelia bit back a moan. Seventy-five! She had a cute little sundress all picked out that would be perfect with a little lacy shawl.

โ€œBut thatโ€™s because of the wind. Once the wind dies down later this afternoon should be about ninety.โ€

This time she did let out a moan.

โ€œWhere are you calling from?โ€ he asked, his voice sounding like honey over gravel.

โ€œManhattan.โ€

โ€œSistah, get on the plane.โ€ He chuckled. โ€œThatโ€™s a no-brainer.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s the worst he can do?โ€ Amelia said, almost to herself.

โ€œAre you a doctor?โ€

โ€œDoctor?โ€ She huffed in surprise. โ€œNo, Iโ€™m a concierge.โ€

โ€œSo no oneโ€™s life depends on you while youโ€™re on vacation?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t even have a cat.โ€

โ€œIf he fires you, can you survive?โ€

Amelia thought about it. Jay might be pissed. Although, truth be told, he really didnโ€™t care about stuff like that. Thatโ€™s what she liked about him. There were no problems, no troubles. In fact, he had asked her to move in when she didnโ€™t have a job, so it probably wouldnโ€™t be that big a deal. If worse came to worst, theyโ€™d eat ramen noodles for a few months until she got into another hotel. They could rekindle their relationship over a shared misery and look over the pictures of their once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

โ€œSistah, you still there?โ€

โ€œUnfortunately.โ€ She sighed.

โ€œLook, you gotta do what you gotta do. Iโ€™ll make sure the kahuna gives you all your money back. He listens to me. You got no worries. You make sure you have no regrets.โ€

โ€œThanks,โ€ she said. While the phone was cradled between her neck and shoulders, she rubbed her arms to stave off the chill as she stared dejectedly out the window. The sleet just kept coming down in gray icy waves. โ€œI really appreciate that.โ€

โ€œI got to tell you, though, that Iโ€™ve got a bucket of Coronas just waitinโ€™ to be shared. Iโ€™ll even throw in a free snorkel lesson. Come find me.โ€

โ€œWhere are you going to be?โ€ Her mouth curved into a smile.

โ€œIn my hammock. Just ask for Dude.โ€

โ€œDude?โ€

โ€œYes, sweet thing?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll see you tomorrow.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s my girl.โ€

Amelia hung up and started shaking her head. Mr. Kensington would be disappointed, but he wouldnโ€™t really fire her, right? She was the only experienced concierge he had, and she was a hard worker. She always picked up extra shifts and never complained. So heโ€™d have to hire a temp, or get one of the desk staff to fill in for a few days. Most of them were native New Yorkers and could recommend restaurants. All of her contacts for shows and tours were on the computer. It was just customer service. Sheโ€™d even stay extra late tonight to help train them. And sheโ€™d only be gone two weeks. It was only right that she took the vacation that had been booked and approved a year ago. Sheโ€™d earned it. And she and Jay needed it. She couldnโ€™t even remember the last time theyโ€™d had sex. Amelia needed to put her relationship first. Straightening her shoulders, she marched into Kensingtonโ€™s office to tell him the bad news.

Amelia trudged to the bus stop with all of her personal belongings in a large plastic garbage bag. She no longer cared about avoiding icy puddles, because she was already soaked through.

By the time she got off at her stop, Zarafina was long gone, and the cafรฉ where Quinn worked was closed. Too badโ€”she could have used another shot of caffeine. It felt like it was taking an eternity to get to her apartment. All she wanted was a nice hot shower and to put on soft wool socks. Sheโ€™d tell Jay about losing her job after Maui. No sense ruining his fun. And if she started to stress, sheโ€™d just order more rum drinks. She deserved this vacation.

โ€œI canโ€™t believe that rat fink Kensington fired me,.โ€ she told her reflection in the elevator.

Opening the door to her apartment, she dumped her belongings on the floor. Crap, she thoughtโ€”sheโ€™d forgotten to pick up dinner. When she didnโ€™t bring home dinner, Jay got cranky. Oh, well, theyโ€™d have to get delivery tonight. Thai sounded good. Or maybe a nice hot steaming bowl of pho? Squishing toward the bedroom, she heard loud moaning sounds.

โ€œYes, yes, yes!โ€

Great. Jayโ€™s watching porn in surround sound again.

Shaking her head, she pushed open the bedroom door. Whatever witty remark she had prepared died when she realized it was live action instead of Internet porn.

Quinn in all her naked glory was bouncing on top of Jay, whose fingers were biting into Quinnโ€™s butt so hard, he was going to leave marks.

Ameliaโ€™s feet were frozen in place. She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, but as she helplessly watched Quinn working toward orgasm, she wasnโ€™t surprised.

Hurt. Betrayed. Pissed. But not surprised.

Is it wrong that Iโ€™m madder about losing my morning coffee?

Quinnโ€™s head tilted back as she spewed a litany of swear words. Jay lay flat on his back with his eyes closed and let her do all the work.

Typical.

It was then she realized that her relationship had problems that even Maui couldnโ€™t solve. She didnโ€™t love Jay; otherwise sheโ€™d be more upset. He didnโ€™t love her; otherwise he wouldnโ€™t be banging the barista.

โ€œYouโ€™re going to put somebodyโ€™s eye out with those,โ€ Amelia said, finding her voice as Quinnโ€™s big breasts heaved up and down.

Quinn shrieked and tried to cover up.

Jay pushed her over and sat up. โ€œBabe, youโ€™re home early.โ€

Review:

While Lifeโ€™s a Beach is an entertaining and quick (also HOT) read, there were portions that are a little farfetched. ย The trouble that comes up is that Samuel plans to sell the hotel but Amelia wants to do a makeover to turn it around.ย  Unfortunately the man that Samuel is trying to sell to is playing hardball toย get the price down.ย  While they wait for a better price Samuel agrees to let her do some things to spruce the place up, but mysterious, bad things start happening โ€ฆ and how they handle it just doesnโ€™t ring real for me.

Having said that, the rest of the book makes up for it โ€“ the sex is very steamy, the characters are interesting, and the rest of the plot is highly entertaining.ย  There were times where I laughed out loud and times that I got a little hot under the collar :), which I consider a definite win!

Amelia is a ton of fun โ€“ sheโ€™s sassy, funny, strong and determined.ย  Samuel is sexy and when he forgets about being overly โ€œDude-yโ€ heโ€™s fun to be around.ย  Heโ€™s got some issues that he needs to work through – some time to try to find a way to be both Dude and Samuel in a way that works.ย  I really loved his brother and the people at the resort, so Iโ€™m curious what future books in the series brings.

If you are looking for a great beach read in the middle of January, this is definitely worth a try!
