by Kelly Bowen

Blurb:

THE EARL DOTH PROTEST . . .

For businessman Heath Hextall, inheriting an earldom has been a damnable nuisance. The answer: find a well-bred, biddable woman to keep his life in order and observe the required social niceties. But it’s always been clear that Lady Josephine Somerhall is not that woman. Once a shy slip of a girl, Joss is now brilliant, beautiful chaos in a ball gown.

. . . BUT THE LADY KNOWS BEST

In her heart, Joss has always loved Heath, the one person she’s always been able to count on. That doesn’t mean she wants to marry him though. Without a husband, Joss can do as she pleases-and now, it pleases her to solve the mystery of an encoded file given to Heath by a dying man. It’s put Heath in peril once, and Joss won’t let that happen again. She’ll do what she must to ensure the earl’s safety. And to remind him that what she lacks in convention, she makes up for in passion.

Excerpt:

Joss watched him, wanting to smooth the troubled lines from his forehead. “I once knew a boy who told me, when he was grown up, he would become a pirate king and sail his own ship to the four corners of the world in search of treasure,” she said quietly.

His mouth twisted but his eyes remained hard. “That boy grew up. And discovered that there were no such things as pirate kings, and no time to search for treasure.”

“Yet that boy now owns his own ships.”

“He does.”

“And what stops him from sailing them where he pleases? What stops him from doing and taking what he truly wants?”

His eyes caught hers and held them trapped within their brilliant blue heat. The remoteness was gone, replaced by a sudden predatory hunger that made Joss swallow convulsively. Her breath stuttered, anticipation and desire roaring to life and sending frissons of longing pulsing through her. The question she’d flung at Heath was swirling around in her brain now, demanding an honest answer from her own conscience.

What was stopping her from taking what she truly wanted? Because what she wanted was standing before her in perfectly tailored evening clothes, his hands clenched around a pile of newspapers, looking at her with such raw covetousness that it was making her nearly drunk with a reckless want.

“Perhaps one day I’ll take you there,” she said into the sudden silence.

Heath stilled. “To Bombay?”

“To start.” She’d meant it to sound like a jest, but it came out as an invitation. “I could take you a lot of places.” Holy hell, but what was she doing?

Heath seemed to have stopped breathing, though he took a step closer, his scent enveloping her. Instantly her mouth went dry, and a steady throb built in her belly. She squirmed, but she was backed against the desk and had nowhere to go. Sanity was rapidly disintegrating around her, crumbling beneath an overwhelming ache to touch this man. To have him touch her.

“Of course I don’t have my own ships, so I’d have to hitch a ride on one of yours.” She barely recognized herself.

There were reasons why she shouldn’t do this, she knew. She just couldn’t think of one right now.

Heath’s expression shifted suddenly, as if something within him had given way. He took another half step closer, close enough that he was pressed against her skirts now, the hard steel of his legs nudging hers apart so that he dominated her space and trapped her against him. He dropped the newspaper carelessly and braced his hands on the edge of the desk on either side of her waist, bringing his lips a breath away from hers.

“Would you take me?” she whispered, and neither of them could pretend she was still talking about ships.

“Yes,” Heath rasped.

And then he kissed her.

Kelly Bowen grew up in Manitoba, Canada. She attended the University of Manitoba and earned a Master of Science degree in veterinary physiology and endocrinology. But it was Kelly’s infatuation with history and a weakness for a good love story that led her down the path of historical romance. When she is not writing, she seizes every opportunity to explore ruins and battlefields. Currently, Kelly lives in Winnipeg with her husband and two boys, all of whom are wonderfully patient with the writing process. Except, that is, when they need a goalie for street hockey.

Book Review, Kieran Kramer, Trouble When You Walked In

TWYWITrouble When You Walked In

by Kieran Kramer

She’s a woman of her word.

Cissie Rogers likes to do everything by the book. Literally. The town librarian in Kettle Knob, North Carolina, she’s determined to preserve the future of literature–and the library’s romantic legend–for her patrons. It’s not easy when the mayor himself, Boone Braddock, wants to close the library down. There’s only one way for Cissie to put a stop to him: By running for mayor herself!

Is he a player–or does he mean business?

Boone is Kettle Knob’s favorite son, a champion athlete and stellar football coach with deep local roots. Cissie will need more than a savvy slogan and a pair of three-inch high heels to stand a chance at the polls. But what about the campaign that’s underway in her own heart? What began as professional rivalry has transformed into a simmering attraction that neither contender can ignore. Could it be that the keeper of the town’s card catalog and the legendary football hero are ready to team up…and write their own storybook romance?

“Kieran Kramer’s smart, sassy storytelling charms readers because there is always poignancy mixed with passion, tenderness, and humor.” –RT Book Reviews

Trouble When You Walked In is a fun, humorous, and sweet small-town read (which is one of my favorite kinds of books).  I love the quirkiness, the closeness, and how involved everyone is with everyone else.  It makes me crave a different way of life, even one full of nosy busybodies.

Boone is the can’t-do-wrong golden child – he’s nice, cares about the town and its people.  He’s the guy that men want to be and women just want.  But he’s also juggling a lot of expectations, especially from his parents, and hiding a pretty big secret that is keeping him from acting on his attraction to the pretty little librarian … the one who has a lot of spunk hiding behind her tweed skirts.  Cissie usually fades into the background but she isn’t going to back down when her library is threatened.  If it means going against Boone in the mayor’s race then she will do exactly that, regardless of how sexy she finds him.

Watching these two dance around their differences and their attraction – butting heads and sneaking kisses – is a riot.  I laughed and sighed and turned pages as quickly as I could and I can’t wait to see what else Kramer brings us from Kettle Knob.

Excerpt:

“You know I like you, right?”

Okaaaaay. Not exactly what Logan expected to hear from Chad Thompson, head of Sutton Capital Security and Jack’s best friend and cousin. Logan glanced over at the big man standing next to him and frowned. They’d gotten to know each other over the past few months, since Chad and Zach were friends, but he had no interest in talking about Chad’s feelings. And, Chad hadn’t really struck him as the touchy feely type. The man had been an Army Ranger and he was built like a tank. He didn’t scream big giant teddy-bear.

“Uh, sure.” Logan took a step to the side, inching away from Chad. There was an odd glint to the man’s eyes.

“I’m just saying, I like you,” Chad said and then let his gaze move to where Logan’s had been moments before. Across the room, Sam stood talking to some of the other women who worked at Sutton. “But, it needs to be said, if you mess with Sam, I won’t hesitate to implement a few of the more interesting techniques for dismembering bodies I’ve got tucked away.”

Andrew Weston, Sutton Capital’s Chief Financial Officer, and the third in the trio of best friends who ran Sutton and owned the majority of its shares, sidled up on the other side of Logan. He sipped what looked to be whiskey or bourbon of some kind from a glass.

“Here, here,” he said quietly, raising his glass in a toast.

Logan rolled his eyes. “It’s not that I don’t appreciate the sentiment, gentlemen, and let me assure you, I have no intention of messing with her, but please. Don’t delude yourselves into thinking you can take me. Need I remind you of the fact that you’ve been out of the action for, what, ten years Chad?”

Logan had to admit, the conversation might have turned a tad juvenile after that, with he and Chad throwing insults at one another under their breath. Andrew cheered one side or the other on as the mood seemed to strike him.  It didn’t have to be said that Logan had heard the warning and respected it. They loved Sam like a kid sister. Logan might be unreasonably attracted to her, but he was very well aware that his head was in the wrong damn place to be starting anything with a woman. Especially a woman like Sam. One who mattered. Given the fact that he wasn’t even sure he should be walking around civilized people instead of locked up in a hospital somewhere talking about his feelings, he wasn’t relationship material.

Jack joined the men where they stood still debating the training and prowess of the SEALs teams versus that of the Army Rangers. All three men laughed when Jack opened with: “So, Logan, you know I like you right?” as his eyes cut across the room to Sam.

Logan shook his head. “Yeah, yeah. I got it. You’ll kill me in new and interesting ways. We’ve covered it. Chad’s most recent plan includes fileting me from head to toe and Andrew has promised to bring salt to the party.”

“Hey, I said salt and margaritas,” Andrew said with a grin.

Jack laughed. “I thought we’d take you out on the boat, chum the waters, and see if a SEAL could swim faster than a shark.”

Logan had to grin at the creativity of the men who stood laughing around him. He saw Sam glance toward their group and his smile stilled. What the hell. He might as well be honest with these guys and let them know they had nothing to worry about.

“Listen, Samantha Page may very well be one of the sexiest creatures to walk the earth, but I’m not planning on dating her. You guys don’t have to—” And, that’s where he broke off, because he’d just watched Sam’s eyes go wide and round with surprise, as though she’d understood every word he’d said. Every damn word.

“Jack. Would Samantha by any chance happen to read lips?” Logan didn’t take his eyes off Sam as he asked the question, and she seemed to choke on her drink as he asked the question.

Jack could hardly speak and Andrew and Chad seemed to be completely useless as they laughed at his blunder.

“Sure does,” Jack finally said as Logan continued to stare at a now red Sam across the room. “Why do you think she sits in on every negotiation I go to? Real handy trick.”

Of course it is.

Chalk Lines & Lipstick, Ophelia London

We’re celebrating the release of Chalk Lines and Lipstick by Ophelia London and I’m so thrilled that she stopped by to share just a little about her new adventure!

*****

Let’s talk about kissing…

My newest novel, Chalk Lines & Lipstick, is my first stab at a cozy mystery (pun obviously intended!) and is a bit of uncharted territory for this romance-writing chick. But after having ten romance novels published, I was ready for a new challenge.

However, I couldn’t seem to keep my cozy characters from making out!

The story is set in my hometown of Eureka, California. So we’re talking rain and fog and lots of dark and misty corners for mystery-ish things to happen. Thing is, whenever I put my characters in one of those corners, they went straight to making out. (You’re welcome!)

“Hey, I think that guy with the knife might want to kill me…but we better kiss for a while…”

See what I mean? Once I realized my romance crutch, I couldn’t bear to get rid of it. Because, let’s face it, kissing is totally awesome. Especially when it’s dark and public and rainy and you just…can’t…stop…yourself no matter what else is going on. Or wait, maybe that’s just me.

Either way, I’m thinking maybe I do have a bit of romance writing still left in me, and I will always defend the cozy make outs!

Cinders Bride - Teaser 2

Excerpt:

The world seemed eerily quiet as she pushed herself up from the hard packed dirt, only to fall back down. Her ankle hurt. Tears filled her eyes, as she glanced around. There stood the women from the mercantile, staring, and their eyes full of terror. She’d get no assistance from them.

John Hardy strutted into the street and laughed while he gestured for two of his men to pick her up. “Come on, honey, it’s time for our honeymoon.”

She heard the clomping of hooves and the turn of wagon wheels behind her but the wagon didn’t stop to help her either. By this time, a crowd had gathered and now there were men standing with the group of women. She tried to plead for help with her eyes but they glanced away.

Two men grabbed at her to haul her back into the saloon when a loud cocking of a gun erupted from behind.

“Put her down.” A man’s voice threatened.

John stepped forward, thrusting out his chest. “Listen, Cinders, this is none of your business. It’d be in your best interest to leave things be.”

The world began to dim and spin, the smell of blood was the last straw. She fainted.

One of the hardest things I have ever had to do was bury my wife.

A heart wrenching vision that will forever be etched in my mind.

Claire was my best friend, she had been since we were barely old enough to talk. I always knew, one day, I would marry her. I think I may have even told her that a few times while we were growing up.

Never did I think I would lose her so suddenly.

I knew at that moment…

Our life would never be the same again…

Excerpt:

“Climb up,” I said from behind her as she stood staring up at the horse only a few feet from her with a look of panic on her face. I was more than positive this was the closest this city girl had ever been to one.

She peered back over her shoulder, and I almost laughed at how overwhelmed she looked.

“I’m from the city,” she said with wide eyes, emphasizing her loss at what to do. “Ryan, you do understand that we have subways and taxis, right? We do not have horses that are the size of SUVs. I’m going to need a little help if you expect me—” She pointed toward her chest, then spun around to point at the horse. “—to get up on that thing.”

Now I did chuckle. It was impossible not to. She was damn near panicking at the thought of how she would mount and then ride the horse.

I stepped up behind her, my chest fitting flush against her back. Gripping her hips, I leaned my head closer and grazed my lips over her ear. Her body relaxed against mine, and she tilted her head to the side, opening up her neck to me.

As I placed a kiss at the base of her neck, she shuddered in my arms. “You have to put your foot in the stirrups,” I whispered before kissing just below her ear. “I’ll lift as you pull yourself up.”

She nodded with her eyes closed as her chest moved up and down in small pants

“Go on,” I urged.

I lifted her as she gripped the saddle, and she yelped when I firmly placed her atop Storm, my father’s Oldenburg stallion. Jackson held him steady as I pulled myself up and took my spot behind Amber. Our bodies were so close together I could feel her ragged breaths as she shifted against me with each one.

*****

Review:

The blurb for this book must have been written by someone who loves to tease 🙂 We pick up the story three years after Claire’s death and Ryan is just existing – he’s building a good life with his daughter but he’s lost his spark. Then he meets Amber … on the side of the road as she kicks the heck out of her flat tire (it is so going on my list as a favorite first meeting).

Of course the fact that this is the first time that Ryan has dated since his wife died causes quite a few problems. His daughter understandably has issues with it and he’s got some conflicted feelings of his own to deal with. But deal with it they do and it creates for readers a wonderfully emotional story. Some may have a problem with how quickly they fall in love, but it is so very sweet that I just don’t care.

We’re also given some great secondary characters in Ryan’s brothers and Amber’s friends. I can’t wait to see what Harms does with the next couple of books!

(There are some editing issues but they could just be because I was reading an ARC. They weren’t enough to bother me but they were pretty apparent and I know some people (like my husband) just can’t handle it. Most likely though they will be fixed in the final copy.)

*****

BTW, Jackson’s story is next – check out this great cover!

Book Review, Isabel Winsor, Pleasure Grove series, Stay With Me

25570672Stay With Me

A Pleasure Grove Novel (Volume 2)

by Isabel Winsor

An Uninvited Guest

She was supposed to deliver the documents to her boss and then go home… But Regina walks in on a sinfully handsome man – naked and chained – and she finds herself sharing one brazen, deliciously forbidden encounter with him. After she walks away, she expects to go back to her normal life – job, dating and friends.

An Irresistible Stranger

Speer never thought he’d rebuild his crumbling life with a woman haunting his body, his mind and his heart. He needs more of her even though it will lead to heartbreak. Speer is damaged goods and yet, Regina sees in him something worth redeeming; something worth loving. Her love terrifies him, even as it awakens in him the possibility there’s something worth staying for…

Some of you may remember Winsor’s Pleasure Grove series from Unleashed Under the Mistletoe. If you haven’t don’t worry about it, this one can stand on its own pretty well – but you do have to be ready for some seriously steamy reading. Don’t get me wrong, in no way does Winsor scrimp on the emotions (I found myself crying at the end), but she also in no way scrimps on the steam!

Speer is dealing with a whole bunch of issues stemming from the death of his brother. He’s run away for a couple of years but now he’s out of options and he’s come home. Shortly afterward he meets Regina and she starts to help him come alive again. It’s a bumpy ride – one that Regina has to have the patience and understanding of a saint to handle. But she’s had some trouble spots of her own and learned a lot because of it so she’s able to use that wisdom with Speer.

There are a couple of things that I really appreciate about the way that Winsor handles this story. Even though Speer wants to run from his troubles again, he stands firm and faces it with Regina, but he also understands that it is going to require professional help to truly get over everything that has happened. It’s refreshing in a genre where all too often you get a “love conquers all” kind of ending.

With complicated and troubled characters, an emotional storyline, and enough sizzle to get you hot under the collar, Winsor’s newest is an erotic, and yet heartwarming, treat. I can’t wait to see what she gives us next … Speer’s friend Boyd is in desperate need of a HEA.

If I’m looking at my schedule right, it is going to be a week of reviews. And we’re going from yesterday’s sweet contemporary read to something a little more … spicy!

*****

Buntitled (3)urning Submission

The Submission Series, Book One

by J. Richards

Blurb:

Sometimes submission can be hot…

Vicki’s never had a problem standing up for herself. So when a meathead at the gym grabs her butt, she has no problem punching him in the face. Gavin, the gorgeous gym owner, throws the guy out, and his tender, but insistent demand to
tend to her injured hand makes Vicki hot. The buff, sex-god-come-to-life is everything she’s ever wanted, and he’s only too happy to show her how good sex can be.

Gavin is entranced by the feisty woman, even though he already has more than enough on his hands with the gym and his work as a volunteer firefighter. The last thing he needs is this bundle of contained fury tossed in his lap, but something about her calls to his inner Dominant. Not only that, her body responds to him like no other. But when he discovers someone is stalking her, it’s no longer all fun and games. Submission is all about trust…and after a brutal attack, trust is the last thing Vicki is willing to give…to anyone.

Reader note: contains light BDSM, spanking, and submission elements.

Excerpt:

She scans her face in the mirror, heart beating wildly with the near death dash. She glares at herself. Clumsy! With another big exhale, she pushes off the treadmill. Grabbing her water bottle, she heads for the free weight section of the large gym. The long row of dumbbells sits against the large mirror. Benches and a few squat racks are spread out around her. Several larger men huff and puff as they test their personal bests.

One man to her right slams a loaded bar into the ground with an exaggerated grunt. The noise makes her jump. Vicki twists her upper body to look over her shoulder at the beast, and he grins. She wrinkles her nose at him before she turns back to face the reflective glass. She parts her feet, bending her knees slightly, stretching out the muscles she has taken the care to warm up. She presses a few buttons on her iPod to make the music fill her brain and block out the buffoons behind her. She grabs two twenty-five-pound dumbbells. Again she shifts her feet for balance. Her knees begin to bend, and a big hand smacks her left ass cheek.

The sting of the hand isn’t too bad—actually, in a different setting, she would welcome the bite of a good spanking—but the idea of someone putting their hands on her body without permission sets her blood to boil. With a scowl, she looks past herself in the mirror to see the smug man’s face, his nasty eyes still glued to her rear end. Vicki throws the weights in her hand to the padded floor. Pivoting like a professional basketball player, she tightens her abs and lets her fist fly into the man’s face.

“Fucking bitch!” he growls and steps toward her. He towers over her five-foot frame, but she doesn’t care. Squaring her shoulders, Vicki prepares to punch him again.

“Seriously?” she asks him, cocking her head to the side in a taunt. “Sexual harassment and you wanna add verbal abuse to the list?” Fluttering her eyelashes like some sweet five-year-old, she goads the beast before her.

“I’ll turn you upside down, little girl.” One more step and his chest brushes hers.

“Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!” A deep voice yells from behind the guy she is planning to pummel.

“What the hell is going on?” It’s the god who was serving smoothies. He puts his big hand on the asshole’s chest and shoves him backward. He looks at the guy and then turns those dark chocolate eyes on Vicki.

*****

Review:

Burning Submission is short and doesn’t go into explicit detail on the D/s relationship (there are pretty steamy sex scenes, but they are more of an intro to BDSM) and heavy on the suspense with Vicki’s stalker. That’s what gives Gavin a chance to insert himself into her life and for her to come into contact with a lifestyle that interests her but that she hasn’t explored before.

It’s not an overly complicated storyline, which I appreciated. Instead it focuses on the two main characters as they dance around their attraction and whether Vicki is willing to herself fully to Gavin.

While you should take the reader note to heart, keep in mind that it is a good opportunity for readers who are interested in checking out the genre.  Clocking in at 105 pages, Burning Submission is a fun, fast, hot read and a great way to try out a new series or even a new type of book.

Book Review – Back to Us

Back to Us, Christi Barth, Shore Secrets series

I’m so thrilled to have Christi Barth with us today to answer a few questions and give us a look into her newest Shore Secrets book – Back to Us.  I’ve read it – what did I think?  Check out the review below to find out.

*****

*What do you like the most (or least) about writing romances?

Shock of shocks, my least favorite thing is writing the sex scene. Too much worrying about how many times I say caressed versus stroked versus fingered. I power through for the readers, though! My fave? Every gushingly, over-the-top romantic moment that makes a reader clutch a hand to their chest and sigh (I do that when I’m writing that, too).

*What is your favorite romantic story (movie/book, fact/fiction)?

Factual? King Edward forfeiting his throne for the love of Wallace Simpson. You can’t get more romantic than that. Any movie that ends in a proposal is guaranteed to make me bawl.

*If you could be any romantic character, who would it be and why?

That’s easy. Eve Dallas from the In Death series. She gets to be kick-ass in all the ways I am not during the day, and then goes home to the richest and sexiest man on the planet at night. That would be super-fun to actually live (without all her near-fatal wounds, of course).

*Which of your characters was the most fun to write?

Gibson Moore from Friends to Lovers in the Aisle Bound series. He was an unapologetic Casanova who was more shocked than anyone to realized he’d fallen in love. (I just started writing another womanizer I’m going to have to reform in book two of my Naked Men series, and I think he’s going to even more fun).
*If you weren’t a writer and could be anything you want, what would it be?

I was convinced for several years that I wanted to be an FBI agent. But I’m a big softee and far from subtle and probably would not be able to pull it off. I do like the idea of clandestine meetings in a trenchcoat, however.

Shore Secrets series

by Christi Barth

Blurb:

Ward Cantrell always went for the long shot. But that recklessness cost him his college scholarship and his chance to play pro ball, and—worst of all—it ended his relationship with the girl next door. Neither the town nor the girl has ever forgiven him. Now he’s taking one last long shot by opening a boutique distillery on the family farm he inherited.

Piper Morrissey spent high school in Ward’s shadow, but she’s come into her own in the years since. Maintaining her spotless image, and that of her family’s winery, is priority number one. Nobody knows that she still yearns for her golden-boy ex. Or at least they didn’t—until Ward agrees to sell Piper the land she needs to start her precious port line. The caveat? She’ll need to date him for one month.

Ward hopes a month is all it’ll take to convince his former sweetheart that while he’s changed, his love for her hasn’t. But when the chance arises to thumb his nose at the town that turned its back on him, he can’t afford not to reject Piper’s offer. Will that make her reject him and his love—for good?

Excerpt:

“Don’t you ever go with your gut?” He sauntered closer.

“That’s risky.”

A devilish smile flashed across his face. “That’s the fun part.”

“We can argue over business strategies—or lack thereof—later,” she said archly, giving him a disapproving glare down her nose. “I’m going to have to insist on time to weigh the pros and cons.”

“It’s Wednesday. I’ll give you until this time on Friday.” He closed the distance between them in one long stride. “I’ll give you something to start off that pro/con list with too.”

Ward bent, putting his lips on hers before Piper could decide whether to scoot out of reach or not. Probably because a part of her couldn’t believe it was actually happening. There was a very strong possibility she’d passed out from exhaustion and this whole thing was a dream. It was the likeliest explanation for the morning’s strange turn of events.

But the warm slide of his lips pulled her straight out of her head and rooted her firmly in the moment. This moment. What she’d dreamed about and hoped for didn’t hold a candle to the reality of Ward, her Ward, finally claiming her again with a kiss that seared her down to her core.

He planted his hands at her waist and lifted, lips never breaking contact. Lips, heck—tongue never breaking contact. Even as he raised her high enough that her feet left the floor, Ward’s tongue swept around every inch of her mouth. Every nerve-laden inch. Every sensitive, tingling inch.

Piper needed to touch. Needed to greedily take him with the same heat he was lavishing upon her. Her hands fisted in his hair. Ward nipped at her bottom lip in response. So she wrapped her legs around his waist. That elicited a growl, and Ward braced her back against the wall. Then he pushed close. Pushed that muscled chest and those ripped abs against her body. Canted his hips to push something else even harder against the vee where her legs met. At that, they both moaned.

The rasping brush of his stubble burned in an oh-so-sexy way as Ward angled down her neck. At her indrawn breath, he paused to suck and lick at the spot right on top of where her pulse fluttered rapidly. Because, oh, the things he did to her. The shivers that raced through her just from the strong, wide span of his hands at her waist. The way he crowded out all thought as he crowded his body against hers.

Even the roughness, the harsh press of his jeans inseam and the scrape of the hair on his chin and the hard grind of hip against hip surged a sexy thrill from her head to her toes. Piper couldn’t squeeze her legs tight enough, couldn’t rake her nails down the back of his shirt hard enough, couldn’t recapture his mouth fast enough. Nothing was enough.

On a gasp, Ward pulled away. His eyes had darkened to midnight and a satisfied smile played at the edges of his mouth. And when had his hands shifted down to support her ass?

“That’s my pitch.”

She tried—and probably failed—to sound aggrieved. “That? A kiss was your pitch?” Best. Marketing. Ever.

“No. The pitch was my carefully laid-out reasons why a month of your time is more than reasonable to secure the land you need.” Another flash of that wicked grin that would’ve turned her knees to jelly if she’d been standing. “The kiss was my closer.”

Review:

I’m really disappointed to say this is the first of the Shore Secrets series that I’ve read because these friends are fantastic together.  They are so supportive and caring for each other, but they aren’t afraid to give each other a hard time when needed (and sometimes when not 🙂 ).  You can definitely read Back To Us as a standalone – there are a few references to the previous stories … but they just taunted me with the goodness that I had missed.

Barth could have easily been lazy on the relationship between Piper and Ward, using their history as an excuse to not craft decent interactions between the two, but lucky for us she doesn’t.  We don’t get the back and forth of them getting to know each other, but she’s able to show their connection and attraction.  As they tiptoe closer, I found myself happier and happier for them, waiting for them to get to a point when they finally bury their past and look toward a future together.

I think my only complaint is how much both Ward and Piper let that past influence their choices now.  I’m going to tell you what he did so if you don’t want to know then stop reading now … last chance …. He kissed another girl, when he was 18, on his own for the first time at college, feeling lonely, and Piper saw it … Yes, I’m sure that was awful – they’d been friends for ages and he broke her heart, plus the wounds at that age can definitely have far reaching effects – but it was just a kiss.  Granted they never talked about it, so she didn’t know that was all it was.  He did, though, and should have manned up and taken care of this before now.  Except they let it fester and turn into a big deal and now they have to work thru it.  Maybe this is where not having the history of the other books plays against me because I’m sure that Ward and Piper and their feelings are a pretty big part in the other stories considering how close these friends are.  I will say that Barth does a fantastic job setting it up and having them work thru it.  So while I think that they allowed themselves to blow it all out of proportion, the trust issue is handled very realistically and she gets them to a satisfying HEA.

If this is your first Shore Secrets (and you don’t want to go back and start at the beginning), you’ll be OK but based on what I see here I think you’ll want to get the other two as well, just so you can spend more time with this great group of people.

Excerpt:

CAGE

She shrugged her shoulder again and I realized it was a nervous habit, like tugging at the hem of her shirt. I wished she had on something else, something that would slip off her shoulder and reveal her creamy smooth skin. I realized I should have hooked up with a girl before I made the trip. That had to be the cause for my unreasonable attraction to this woman.

My stepsister.

Oh, fuck, that would be just wrong. Wouldn’t it?

She retrieved a glass pitcher filled with lemonade. It had lemon slices floating on top. She had to steady it with both hands, leaving no doubt it was real crystal. Stretching again, she reached for two glasses in the cabinet above her head.

Before I realized what I was doing, I was at her side, taking them down and handing them to her. Now, no one ever accused me of being a gentleman. But hell, if it didn’t bring out something in me to see her struggling like that. “Here you go. Maybe you should get a little step stool or something.” I grinned down at her as I handed her the glasses.

She gave me a reprimanding look worthy of a teacher. Or a nun. “Ha, ha. How’s the weather up there, by the way?”

“Touché.”

She wasn’t really short, about five-five in my estimation. But that made her a whole foot shorter than me. I didn’t move as she poured us each a glass of lemonade. It seemed to frazzle her so I stepped closer when her back was turned.

She let out a little yelp when she bumped into me. “I didn’t know you were that close.”

She pushed those cute little glasses up her nose. It made me want to take them off to see just how beautiful those eyes were.

I used the excuse of retrieving my glass of lemonade to crowd her against the counter. I let my cock brush against her hip and delighted in the sharp inhalation of breath she couldn’t control. I took a long drink, knowing her gaze would follow the movement of my throat. It was a cheap seduction trick most guys learned early. I set down the empty glass, caging her in with my arms.

I used that trick every time I could. Chicks went crazy and thought that was how I got my name. Caging them in with my arms.

It wasn’t. My mother had named me Cage. Horace Cage. What a fucking name. I always wondered if she thought my birth had somehow put her in a cage. That was a conversation we would never have. She’d been dead to me long before I’d buried her.

FTC Disclaimer

I have received ARCs of books free from NetGalley (and many moons ago from BookTrib.com) to review but the majority of the stories are either bought by me or provided for free from the publisher, author, or PR company. The opinions I share are my own and in no way are influenced by an author or publisher. There is no promise of a positive review by any party and there is no additional compensation. Unless otherwise noted, I am not affiliated with any contest or other event mentioned on this blog and I do not receive a paid endorsement for any post.
