Excerpt:

Prologue

Max

“Oh god!” she screams below me. “Fuck me, Max, fuck me harder!” It’s a good thing the music and shouting from outside this room is loud enough to drown out her screaming!

Today, the girls have thrown a welcome home party for Tanya and Leo because they missed them so much. Probably because they were on their honeymoon for a month! It was only supposed to last two weeks, but Leo had rung home and let us known that he wasn’t done having time alone time with his new wife, and that he wouldn’t be home for another two weeks.

All day, I’ve been holding back my fucking hard cock, just watching her. She doesn’t even know that she’s teasing me, tempting me, but she does. Every damn day!

To make it worse, because the weather is good for an English summer day, the girls decided it was perfect for a pool party. Not everyone came in their swim suits, but she did. As the kids scream and laugh, splashing about, my attention is always on her. I don’t know what to do with it or how to deal with it all. As I watched her laughing pool side with Kendal and the triplets, Finley decided to splash his mum, but instead he soaked the wrong person. He drenched her through, the women I’ve been lusting over. Her bikini became wet and clung to her body and her now wet breasts became my focus point as her nipples hardened under the wet material.

Just the thought makes me pound into the girl under me. That’s the only reason she’s here with me, in a spare bedroom overlooking the party below us. As soon as the woman outside stood up, showing me her perfect body that’s shimmering with the water, I grabbed the nearest girl and dragged her away. As I take this lucky woman from behind, it’s not her face I’m picturing, it’s the woman who has fucked with my head ever since I met her! It’s not the blonde’s hair below me that I see as I pull it back, it’s the blackness of hers I long to wrap around my fist. The blonde under me is too skinny, she needs a few extra pounds and maybe some curves. Her ass isn’t as bouncy, either, and I want more cushion as I pound harder on her ass.

Fuck!

This isn’t fucking working! I’m about to stop, but I hear her laugh and for a second I pause. The sound reignites my fire inside and I fuck the blonde again. Unbelievably, my luck doubles. I don’t just hear her laugh, but through the gap of the curtains in the room I’m taking up right now, I see her! I watch as she steps from the pool, water falling from her body like a fucking porn star! I thrust one last time, not thinking about the body below me, and come undone from watching Maisy alone.

Guest Post – Temporarily Employed

Temporarily Employed, Vicki Batman

We have a treat today as Vicky Batman share with us her new book Temporarily Employed and discusses the amazing power that music can have.

*****

Music and memories go hand in hand. The other day, I clicked on an easy-listening iTunes playlist I’d created, and the Beatles’ song, And I Love Her, came up.

Once upon a time, I was a young single chick and liked several guys. I went on a casual night out with a friend I had stirrings of feelings for. I think he did too, but was afraid to act on them.

So we went to a show, and afterwards, we drove around town with the windows down. I pushed my long hair out of my eyes and let the moment take me away. At the end of the evening, this song came on. He turned to me and sang the whole thing. I part of me wanted to believe this meant more than just singing a song. But I’ll never know. He didn’t kiss me good night or utter another word. He dropped me off and drove away.

Not long after, I met another who chased me until he caught me. He couldn’t and can’t sing well, but he tries. LOL

Obviously, this was a strong memory because I remember it blanket-blank years later. And hearing the song makes me wonder whatever happened to that boy and a bit wonders what might have been.

In my romantic comedy mystery, Temporarily Employed, Hattie visits Allan’s apartment and hears:

~

Upon his return, I noticed he’d pulled off his coat and tie. The sleeves of his shirt were rolled to the elbow, exposing the man hair covering his wrists. The top shirt button had been unfastened. Lordy, I swallowed deeply. He looked so sexy like throw-him-on-the-ground-and-roll-around-like-heathens sexy.

He crossed to the media center and turned on his iPod stuck in a sound dock. A Chris Botti song, one of my favorites, filled the room with its sexy jazzy sound.

Arousal instantly covered my body from head-to-toe. Feeling self-conscious, I pressed my nose in the cat’s fur to cover my translucent imaginings.

A. Wellborn stood by the music player all the while silently observing me.

Totally aware, I hoped he thought terrific things about me like the ones I had about him. After a while, he made his way to the sofa and casually sat next to me, setting his arm on top of the sofa cushion.

How does he do that? How can he act so calm, cool, and collected? I felt ready to pop like a balloon, and he seemed so at ease.

~

Whew! Well, I’m fanning self.

Do you have a song that is special to you?

Excerpt:

“Yuck.”

Pretty much covered the whole freakin’ day.

A blinding red-white, red-white strobe, reflected in my brand new Wrangler’s rearview mirror, seized my attention. The police. I tossed my hands skyward, ready to surrender. I shouldn’t have been too surprised. Like I’d commented this a.m. to my roommate, Jenny, “Today, anything’s possible.”

My Bad Day checklist included:

– Crappy job interview, one which might have provided desperately needed income.

– Wore gut-busting panty hose on a hot day which had now worked past my waist       and strangled my diaphragm.

– A barely blowing air conditioner indicated something had malfunctioned in my new, fun car.

I stole another glance in the mirror, and with great reluctance, flipped the right turn indicator. My vehicle coasted to a stop on the shoulder of Boston Avenue in my hometown of Sommerville, a nice suburb located between two large cities. Four lanes of cars and trucks zipped by as I sat there where every single one of my family, friends, friends’ friends, and their friends—including Rat Fink Suzanne—would see a police vehicle positioned right behind mine. Gleefully, drivers would chant the “Ha-ha, got you, not me” ditty.

How embarrassing.

After killing the engine, I flopped back in the seat. Shooting the morons the finger was an idea. Nah. I’m too exhausted to care.

A litany of: “No, not hiring.” “Just filled the position.” “You’re over qualified.” “You’re under qualified…” tornadoed through my head. Coupled with the intense job search through various outlets like the internet and completing numerous online employment applications, no wonder my body had been depleted of all life force.

Not even a breeze blew to take the edge off the unbearable summertime heat. Tangled wild trees and dry scrubby bushes banked the roadside. The grass had taken on a scorched look. Rolling down the driver’s window, I surveyed my surroundings. Nothing great. Nothing new.

I stole a glance in the side mirror at the policeman who strode purposefully along the shoulder. The gravel crunched under his boots. He looked huge, probably because his uniform, which appeared to be bulked with a bullet-proof vest, made him resemble a buffed-up superhero in size. Exceedingly intimidating.

Sigh. When things went wrong, they were really wrong.

How much fight does one woman have inside?

Calla Hart has never relied on anyone. The fierce West Virginian learned the hard way to be self-sufficient, that is until she is viciously attacked late one night by two thugs. Her luck turns when, still fighting for her life, she is rescued from her attackers by a preternaturally strong stranger. Although her pre-med student mind vehemently resists the notion, Calla must soon accept that he is a vampire, one who has stalked the historic grounds of Charleston, South Carolina, since the mid-eighteenth century. Their desire for each other is intense, yet as much as she’d like to envision happily ever after with Severin, too much stands in their way. Aside from her fragile mortality, there is Severin’s extremely dominant personality coupled with his unending feud with the ancient Russian vampire Valdon, who has so far proved invincible.

And Valdon has set his sights on Calla ….

When it comes down to the wire, what would you sacrifice for the love of your life?

Assignment: Romance Series, Barbara Valentin, False Start

Another busy day!  I hope you find something that tickles your fancy …

False Start looks like a great choice – I’m ready to get my hands on a copy.

*****

False Start
An Assignment:
Romance Novel
Barbara Valentin
Gemma Halliday Publishing
Contemporary Romantic Comedy,65,555k
Mattie Ross is probably the last person who should be doling out good counsel to anyone on anything. Still smarting after being left at the altar two years earlier, she is strapped with debt, has sworn off men and, despite her well-proportioned figure, remains haunted by childhood taunts of “Fatty Mattie.” But to her publisher at the Chicago Gazette and readers, she is their latest advice columnist, The Plate Spinner, a self-assured working parent to adorable fake children and is a multi-tasking savant.
Enter Nick
Derosa, the twin brother of Mattie’s cold-footed fiancé who is trying to get back on his feet after his brother steals his identity and implicates him in an illegal investment scheme. But thanks to Nick’s legendary running career, the publisher of the Chicago Gazette proposes a wager: If Nick can train an out-of-shape working parent to compete in the Chicago Marathon, he will contribute enough to help Nick launch his own non-profit running club for homeless kids.
Suddenly “Fatty” Mattie and Nick are thrust together as the most unlikely of pairs and under a deadline to put their trust issues aside and avoid another false start in their lives.

Excerpt:
Nick DeRosa. Why Eddie chose his estranged twin brother to be his best man over any of his esteemed colleagues at his LaSalle Street investment firm, she had no idea. The awkwardness of their greeting the night before was matched only by its impropriety. Mistaking him for Eddie, Mattie had pulled his face down to hers and, with all of the exuberance of a jubilant bride-to-be, planted a passionate kiss on his surprised lips.
That he had the same chiseled Mediterranean features and wore his chestnut-colored locks in the same style as his brother’s was hardly her fault.
That he kissed her back was his.
Hours later, as she was leaving the rehearsal dinner, Nick managed to confirm, if not worsen, the bride-to-be’s opinion of him when she overheard him ask Eddie, “Why do you want to marry somebody like Mattie?”
            Somebody like Mattie.
Taken out of context, that question could be twisted any number of malicious ways and twist it Mattie did. But, given that she was less than a day away from becoming Mrs. Eduardo DeRosa, co-owner of a custom-built Gold Coast penthouse and a cherry red Ferrari, she simply added the insult to the already long list of offenses Nick had incurred against her over the years and filed it away for future reference.
Author Bio:
Barb is a freelance writer, over-scheduled parent, and connoisseur of fine chocolate. A second-generation journalist, her work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune and its affiliates. The exploits of her five boys provided fodder for her column, The Plate Spinner Chronicles, a long-running feature in the Chicago Tribune, which snagged her a runner-up spot in an Erma Bombeck Humor Contest. A member of RWA’s Windy City chapter, she still dreams of the day when her to-do list includes “Send NY Times book critic thank you note” and “Accept Godiva’s request to be a taste-tester.”

Excerpt:

“Saving Grace” by Kristen Proby in BABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE

I lead her over to an area that has a gentle slope and is perfect for beginners. It shouldn’t scare her. Though I’ve skied places on this mountain that made me break out into a cold sweat.

She’ll never see those places.

“So you think I’m handsome?”

“You know you’re handsome.” She laughs and brushes some snow off her pants. It’s begun snowing. Large, fluffy flakes are lazily making their way to the ground.

“Handsome enough to have dinner with tonight?”

She bites her lip and I know she wants to say yes. I want her to say yes. I want to do much more than have dinner with her, but I’m willing to take it slow.

For the first time in a long time, I’m enjoying a woman’s company when she’s fully clothed.

Good grief.

“Well, you are rather handsome,” she replies, trying to copy my accent and failing miserably.

Fuck me, she’s adorable.

“Your accent needs work,” I reply, and brush my finger over her nose.

“I’m just trying to blend in. I’m a chameleon.” Her face is perfectly sober, but her hazel eyes are full of laughter. Her golden blond hair is cut short, shorter than I normally prefer, but it’s perfect on her. It frames her delicate face, setting off those witching eyes.

“Dinner, Grace,” I remind her.

“If you insist.”

Oh, I think I’ll be insisting on quite a few delicious things, darling.

I smile softly to myself and lead her through more snowplow moves, how to turn, and damn if she isn’t learning quickly. She’s a natural.

“You’re doing great, Grace.”

“I am?” She smiles widely as I help her out of her skis.

“Absolutely. You’ll be flying down this mountain in no time.”

“How are we getting down to the lodge?” she asks nervously.

“We’re riding the chair, love.”

“I’m sorry, this can’t be very much fun for you.”

“Actually, I’m having a lovely day.” I help her back onto the chair and hop on next to her. “I’m grateful that your friends are getting married and talked you into Aspen.”

“Me, too.” She smiles up at me and I want to kiss her more than I’ve ever wanted anything in my life. I pull my glove off and pull my knuckles down her cold cheek, glide my thumb over her plump lower lip.

“Grace, I’m going to kiss you here on this chairlift.”

Her tongue pokes out of her mouth, wetting her lower lip and brushing my thumb and my cock tightens. I lean in and rest my lips on hers, waiting for her to push me away, but she plunges her fingers into my hair and holds on and I sink into her. I rub my lips back and forth over her soft skin before licking her lower lip and slipping my tongue inside, over her tongue and exploring her mouth. She moans softly, opening readily and I sink in farther, caught up in her clean scent and the smell of the snow around us.

I pull back to find her eyes wide and glassy. The pulse in her throat throbs quickly, matching my own.

Bloody hell, I want her.

Book Review, Cathryn Fox, His Taste of Temptation, In the Line of Duty series

I made sure that I got the review for His Trouble in Tallulah up this weekend because I knew the next book was coming out this week.  You guys are in for a treat with this one and to get you in the mood we have a fantastic sneak peek, a great giveaway, AND my review.  Check out everything below!

*****

HisTasteOfTemptation-R[9]His Taste of Temptation

In the Line of Duty, Book 3

by Cathryn Fox

Blurb:

One affair, thirty days.

Since his last relationship blew up in his face, bomb expert Brad Crosby has lost his appetite for “permanent”. But his kid brother’s best friend? Now there’s a curvy morsel he could wrap his lips around.

For years Brad has been the star of Madison Graham’s fantasies. If only she were the kind of put-together girl he prefers, not a pastry chef whose makeup consists of a dusting of powdered sugar on her nose. A belief that’s confirmed when her apartment floods and he offers to let her sleep in his bed—alone.

Wrapped in Brad’s sheets, she dreams of his touches, his kisses, the feel of his body on hers. Except her dreams feel like reality—and come morning, she realizes it wasn’t a dream at all.

Soon the two are burning up the nights. But as Madison’s sweet love grows on him, Brad can’t help but think of extending their time together.

Too bad Madison keeps reminding him their affair has an expiration date.

Warning: May contain heat, explosive sex, and Fourth of July fireworks that pale in comparison to the sparks between a sworn bachelor and a tempting pastry chef.

Review:

This is the second of Fox’s “In the Line of Duty” books that I’ve read and I’m hooked.  At one point I looked up and realized that I was about halfway thru this one and felt like no time had passed at all.  And just like His Trouble in Tallulah, His Taste of Temptation is sexy, sweet and fun.   And the great thing, like Trouble, you can start here if you haven’t read any of the other stories – they do a great job of standing on their own.  But if these two are any indication you won’t stop at just one!

I think it is hard to get the right note when you are dealing with self-esteem issues in your main characters.  But Fox does a good job of realistically portraying a woman with body issues without having her be too down on herself or … well, whiny. And Brad is a fantastic hero – he’s kind, caring and supportive of his friends and family.  He’s understandably hesitant to get in to a relationship again – no only because of his own past but from seeing other relationship that have faltered.

Best of all, at no time did I go “ugh” at anything they did, said or thought.  Even though they both are making assumptions about the other person’s feelings and they aren’t doing a great job of communicating, it is believable in the context that Fox gives us.  You can totally see where they are coming from, not only at the beginning but as the book progresses and their feelings deepen.

I will say that my only complaint is that it ended somewhat abruptly (although totally satisfyingly) but since this is a series (and Brad’s brother Jonah is still single, as well as some of their friends), I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of them in coming stories.

With some seriously hot naked time and some seriously sweet together time, His Taste of Temptation will charm readers as they join Brad and Madison on a path to their own, somewhat unexpected, HEA.

Excerpt:

Jesus Christ, Madison was going to be the death of him.

He’d been hoping to avoid her when he showed up to collect his brother, and the last thing he expected was to find her in a goddamn wet T-shirt, looking so fucking hot he almost shot off a load then and there.

Brad drummed his fingers on his steering wheel and shifted in his seat, uncomfortable as his cock pressed insistently against his unforgiving jeans. Christ, seeing her in that T-shirt, blinking up at him with those dark bedroom eyes of hers as the lush swell of her body beckoned his touch—his cock—had damn near done him in.

Fuck.

He’d be lying if he said he didn’t want her in his bed. Every time he looked at her all he could think about was caging her beneath him and fucking her long and hard, driving balls deep until she screamed out his name. Oh yeah, he’d make her scream, and when he did—contrary to what Sophie thought—everyone would hear it.

Maybe then he’d be able to stop thinking about her when he was alone at night. Hell, who was he kidding? He thought about her even when he wasn’t alone.

He’d always liked his kid brother’s best friend, but six months ago, after returning home from a long overseas tour, he suddenly began to see the sweet girl next door in different ways.

Sinful ways…

But he wasn’t going to act on his urges, not when she had something going on with Jonah. Shit…

Truthfully, Brad wasn’t sure what kind of relationship the two had, considering he’d seen them both date other people over the years. But from the comfort level between them, to the way they took care of each other, even going so far as to sharing a place when Jonah had finished his last tour, he knew there had to be deeper feelings involved, and he wasn’t about to take her to his bed, no matter how much he wanted her naked and beneath him. Or naked and on top.

Or just plain naked.

Jonah tossed his rucksack into the truck bed and slid into the cab, pulling Brad’s thoughts back from fantasyland. “Hey, bro, what’s up?”

Brad put his key into the ignition and turned the engine over. “Nothing.” He clenched his jaw hard as he watched Madison and Sophie exit from the downstairs bakery. A frown marred Madison’s pretty face as she spoke to her friend, the Sweetie’s Bakery Closed sign on the door behind her rattling against the glass pane as she locked up. Brad gripped the steering wheel harder. He hated seeing her living and working in such a shitty place, and he knew today’s loss of income was going to have a serious effect on her bank account.

“You have that look on your face again.”

Brad angled his head toward his brother. “What look is that?”

Jonah grinned. “The one you get just before you kick the shit out of me.”

Brad glared at his brother and scoffed. “Evidently, I should have beaten you more often.” Okay, so he might have roughed up his punk-ass brother a time or two over the years, but it was only because Jonah had needed it. The boy was a damn fool sometimes, getting into messes that Brad had to clean up behind him.

“Yeah, well, that’s a matter of opinion,” Jonah said.

He held his brother’s gaze. “You got something to say?”

Jonah held his hands up and laughed. “Nope.”

Madison tapped on the window and Jonah jumped onto the sidewalk to let her climb into the middle. Without conscious thought Brad’s eyes roamed the sexy curves she always kept hidden behind those baggy clothes and icing-stained apron. Damned if he didn’t want to peel those loose-fitting work clothes from her body so he could touch and kiss her lush contours until she writhed beneath him and cried out his name.

As Madison slid in beside him, her duffle bag clutched to her chest, want pumped through his veins, the sudden, urgent need to help himself to a taste of her sweetness pulling at him hard. Fuck. He looked away, staring at some random woman walking her dog while he did his damnedest to ignore his raging hard-on.

“Here, give me that.” Jonah took the bag from her and tossed it into the truck bed with his.

Once he jumped back into the cab, Brad put the vehicle into gear, turned his attention to the road ahead and slipped into traffic. Jonah punched up the volume on the radio and hooked his left arm over the back of the seat, pulling Madison toward him.

Brad tried to focus on his driving, he really did, but with Madison’s leg rubbing up against his it took effort to stay on the road.

He drove through the downtown core, and when they passed a vacant building, a For Sale sign on the window, Jonah turned to Madison. “Maybe when I get back we can look for a new place to live.”

She looked at the building, and there was a hint of gloom in her voice when she said, “I can’t afford to rent an apartment and a business front, and it won’t be easy to find a place where I can live upstairs and turn the main level into Sweetie’s.”

Jonah curved his arm around her and pulled her in closer. As she rested her head on his shoulder, he brushed a light kiss over her hair. “Don’t worry. I’ll be making some good coin out on the road. It’ll go a long way in finding something nicer than we have now.”

Feeling like a third wheel, an eavesdropper listening in on a private, intimate conversation, Brad cast a glance their way. His gut clenched when he saw Madison smile up at Jonah. Hell, the two of them even talked like an old married couple. There was no missing how much his brother cared for her, which only solidified Brad’s vow to keep his distance where Madison was concerned.

Of course, she wasn’t the first girl Brad had walked away from because of his brother. Jonah was fun, wild and had a reputation with the ladies. As teens, a few of Brad’s girlfriends had gravitated toward his charismatic younger brother. Even though Brad wanted to beat the shit out of Jonah for taking his girl instead of doing the honorable thing and backing off, Brad always walked away. Blood was blood and no way would he allow a girl to come between him and his brother. How much could any of those girls have cared anyway, if they had no trouble leaving one brother for the other? Besides, he’d promised his dad that he’d take care of Jonah, and as a man of his word, he chose his family battles carefully. As long as Jonah treated the women properly, there’d be no trouble between brothers.

His thoughts careened back to a couple years ago, to the night he found his fiancée Jocelyn in bed with another man—doing the one thing he wouldn’t dream of asking her to do for him, considering she’d blatantly told him oral sex was disgusting and there wasn’t a girl in the world who enjoyed giving it. Although she enjoyed the hell out of it when he’d gone down on her, which he did frequently. Fuck, he wasn’t sure what hurt more, seeing her mouth wrapped around some douchebag’s cock, or realizing how stupid she thought he was when she starting spilling lies, telling him it wasn’t what he thought. Sure, whatever. Wouldn’t be the first time a woman had fallen and landed with a hard-on in her mouth and a pair of balls in her hand. Oh yeah, shit like that happened all the time.

He could have stayed and fought for her, but any girl who would sleep with another man and lie about it while her fiancé was overseas fighting for their country wasn’t worth the battle. And after seeing the same thing happen to a few of his comrades, he’d come to learn that long-distance relationships never worked. Since Brad’s work continued to take him out of state, he decided never to get himself in that kind of situation again. No, now he was into casual sex, no commitments.

“Besides,” Jonah said, “Brad can help us turn any space into a bakery. Right, bro?”

“Yeah, sure.” Brad looked at Madison, and when she turned her bright-eyed smile his way, his heart nearly stopped.

She ran paint-chipped nails along the deep hollow of her throat, and as he watched the movement his mouth watered, his tongue wanting to follow the path of her hands. Heat throbbed through him, and his cock thickened once again, aching to pound into her, hard hot strokes that would leave them both sated and breathless and would finally, finally, get her out of his head.

“And if something else goes wrong with the place while I’m away, Brad’s your man,” Jonah said.

As Brad pictured himself stepping in for his brother, his mind ran wild with one delicious idea after the other, and he forced himself to cough, hoping it would rattle some sense back into his lust-drunk brain.

“Isn’t that right, Brad?”

“Yeah.” He nodded. “I can help you out with anything you need.”

Something flitted across her face when she asked, “Anything?”

“Yeah, anything,” he assured her, but when she drew her bottom lip between her teeth, and her eyes glazed over like she had other things on her mind, he wondered if they were still talking about her run-down rental…or something else entirely.

by Sandra Sookoo

Genres: Contemporary Romance

Blurb:

Bad stuff happens. Love makes it bearable.

All Morgan Davidson wants is a chance to reconnect with her fifteen-year-old niece – sans digital dependency. She books a cabin for Christmas week in rural southern Indiana, but contracting a case of the warm fuzzies for a handsome ranger isn’t part of the plan.

Carter Poole, single dad and park ranger, has simple tastes. He’s not on Facebook, doesn’t let his five-year-old son play video games and spends a lot of time outdoors. When he’s sent out to investigate mysterious tracks, he meets Morgan and a spark ignites between them. He invites her to share the holiday with him and his son.

Between teenage angst, emotional drama and second-guessing, Morgan and Carter manage to steal a few moments alone. When his son goes missing on Christmas Eve, the world narrows and they realize what matters most — family. The more mismatched the better.

Excerpt:

“How do you know it’s a deer?” Morgan took a few steps backward and out of his arms. “It could be a bear or a wolf or a giraffe. You don’t know.”

How he adored her sense of humor. He laughed and the sound echoed in the silence, followed by more crashing in the trees. “Yeah, giraffes are a big problem in southern Indiana in the winter.”

A frown pulled at her delicious mouth. “You know what I mean. About the bears or wolves though. Possibly giraffes was a bad example.”

“Don’t worry. Both aren’t anxious to make Indiana their home. Though there might be coyotes around.” He snickered and couldn’t resist baiting her. “I wouldn’t put it past a bigfoot or two to take a stroll through the woods at this time of night. They’re supposedly real attracted to singing. Last summer, the team from BFRO was out here.”

“What’s that?”

“Bigfoot Research Organization. Cool, quirky people. Never did sight one of the bi-peds, but they claim to have heard howls and wood knocks.” A smile pulled at his mouth.

“Seriously?” The outcry rang on the shivery air. Her whole body tensed as if preparing to flee. She glanced back and forth with big eyes. “Let’s go back. Right now.”

“It’s all right. I was kidding about the bigfoots, but some folks adamantly believe they exist. Me, I’ll reserve judgment until I actually see one.”

“And then what, share the forest with them?”

He shrugged. “Why not? The world’s big enough for everyone.” Carter closed the distance between them. He slid his arms around her waist, and when she didn’t pull away, he held her more comfortably in his embrace. “I’m sorry. It was a dirty trick. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“I’m not scared.” Her insistence didn’t hold water since she shook with nerves.

This time he did dare. “Is that right,” he murmured seconds before he gently pressed his lips to hers. The warmth and velvety softness of her mouth welcomed him home and he happily applied himself to the kiss. When she stirred and made a soft little sound at the back of her throat, he broke contact though he held her gaze. “How about now?” His voice sounded as breathless as hers had been earlier.

“Terrified.” She looped her arms around his shoulders and tugged him closer. “However, it’s probably nice to do something that scares us every day to become stronger, right?”

Carter grinned as his pulse soared and his body warmed. She hadn’t rejected him. “Absolutely.” For the first time since Jace was born, he gave himself over to the art of kissing a woman. Morgan fit in his arms as if she were made just for him. She neither pushed for greater intimacy nor did she deny him the access if he tried for it. He kept the embrace simple, uncomplicated, cozy. They didn’t need to find out all of each other’s secrets right this second.

Sandra SookooAuthor Info:

Sandra is a writer of romantic fiction. In the past couple of years she’s concentrated on funny contemporary romance as well as Regency-era romance, but she will, on occasion, write paranormal or sci-fi. Whether you like sweet or erotic heat levels, there’s something for everyone to fall in love with. She’s also a hybrid author, choosing to publish both with small presses and doing the indie thing.

Offered representation in February 2014 by Scott Eagan at Greyhaus Literary Agency for Victorian-era historical romances, Sandra’s been hard at work researching, planning and writing a new series. When not immersed in creating new worlds and engaging characters, Sandra likes to read, bake, taste new teas, watch The Big Bang Theory and Psych as well as Finding Bigfoot, and travel. Her favorite place to spend vacation hours is Walt Disney World: it’s where dreams come true and the soul can play. When she’s not writing or inventing new recipes, she spends time with her husband—goofing off and making moments count. Life’s too short to be serious all the time.

Donna Augustine, Karma, Karma series

We are kicking off the week with the wonderful Donna Augustine, author of the Karma series, as she shares a few of her writing secrets. (And I’m totally convinced we could be best friends based on her music taste alone!)

*****

What I Do When I Get Writer’s Block

I don’t know a writer that hasn’t hit the wall at least once.  Writer’s block is just one of those things that’s going to happen to you sooner or later. Even writing this blog post makes me choke, as if I’m uttering the name Voldemort.

There is hope though, and the more you come up against this foe, the better you get at vanquishing your enemy. I’ve got several rituals I do that seem to prepare my brain to write and give my muse a kick in the ass when needed. This is how I get through it.

Vanilla Lattes. Not sure why they help me, but they do.

Long drives. Make sure you go alone. Someone chatting in your ear ruins the effect.

Long showers. Your brain has an easier time roaming when you start relaxing.

Write anything, even if it’s horrible. Similar to trying to flush out a hose, you might get nothing but dirty water at first but eventually it starts coming out clean.

Music. This one probably deserves its own list. For some reason, alternative music tends to work best when I’m in a rut.  I’ll usually pop on almost anything from King’s of Leon, My Chemical Romance or Imagine Dragons.

The most important thing to remember is, DON’T STRESS! It will pass!

Review- A Night Owl Top Pick

I was immediately drawn into the story and once I started I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. ~ Review by BookGirl

*****

Excerpt:

“No. Just you. Everyone has their own department. You are Karma.” He pointed toward me dramatically, the way someone would try and accent a meaning to a person who didn’t know the language.

“I’m not sure I’m adequately suited for this position. Even for a month. I’m more of a “bygones be bygones” kind of person. Don’t you need someone a bit more vengeful?”

He looked down at the file spread on his desk. “I would disagree. Your file said you would be an excellent candidate.”

“May I see that?” I asked, eying up said file on his desk. How much did Harold know about me? Everything? That was an uneasy feeling. Even the best of us had our secrets and even though I considered myself a decent human being, I didn’t think I fell into the saintly category.

The file didn’t look big enough for my entire life to be in it. It didn’t even look thick enough for a short story. Maybe just a highly edited Wiki version?

“No, absolutely not.” He shut the Manila folder quickly, as if I were going to jump up and try to peek. The guy took neurotic to a whole other level.

Okay, the file wasn’t that important. I needed to keep the peace and simply explain in better detail how I’d made an error in judgment. Be nice. My southern mother had always said you caught more bees with honey than vinegar. She had tried to drill it into my head since I was a small child. It wasn’t something I’d come naturally to, that was for sure, but it was a valid tactic, even if that wasn’t the lesson my mother had meant to instill.

“Harold, when I agreed to work for you, I was under the duress of seeing my dead body.  You can understand how jarring that can be, right? I wasn’t thinking clearly at all.” It sounded logical enough to me, but I wasn’t sure if he’d ever had the pleasure of dying and his manner didn’t scream naturally empathetic.

He cleared his throat and I could tell by the set of his mouth that I wouldn’t like the next words. “I’m sorry, but that’s not how things work here. Like I told you, there’s a mandatory one-month trial period. An active one-month.”

He leaned back in his chair and pushed his glasses up closer to his face. His almost black eyes, artificially enlarged from the lens, stared at me in a bit of an awkward way. I wasn’t sure if there was a bite to follow up his bark but his magnified beady gaze sure made the situation less than desirable.

Still, beady gaze and all, I had to try one last time. Perhaps a different angle. Regardless of my record, he clearly thought I was an idiot; maybe that was the way to go. I had no problem playing a stooge if it got me out of here quickly.

“As you stated, I’m a transfer. You really don’t want me. I’m a horribly slow learner. The mistakes I’ve made in my life, geesh, you’d squirm if you knew.” I twirled a finger in my hair for effect and wished I had some chewing gum to smack.

“Yes, I’m well aware.”

He was? Hey, wait a minute; I didn’t think I’d done too badly for myself. What were these jerks writing about me in that file?

“Fate will help you with that.”

And just like that, I had bigger problems. I wasn’t just stuck here; I was stuck with him.

“The guy who helped me so far?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“It has to be him.” Harold threw his hands in the air, as if why am I bothering him? Not his orders.

“Then I’ll work alone.”

I’d be clueless but peaceful. There was something wrong about that guy. There was something too bossy or too intense. I couldn’t even describe exactly what it was about him that was too much, but it was.

Even the brief moment I’d actually been in my right mind around him, it was as if his presence exerted some sort of gravitational pull, stronger than a normal person’s. As if his intensity could throw me out of orbit. And I didn’t want to go out of orbit. I had enough things to handle besides ping ponging around.

“Non-negotiable. I’ve got orders.” Harold folded his hands and rested them atop his desk, littered with paper.

“From who exactly?”

“The universe.” His chin notched up a hair.

“Would it be possible to speak to this universe person? I’m sure they’ll understand that there is a personality conflict.” It was time to bump my complaint to upper management.

“No one speaks to the universe.”

“Then how do you know what to do?” I leaned in a little.

“Simple. Through my orders.” His eyes started to twitch.

“Which you get how?”

“My memos.”

“Then you can send a memo to the universe. I won’t work with him.”

“I’ll file your complaint but it won’t matter. And don’t forget, as I’ve already explained, it has to be an active month.”

Twenty-five days. I’ve dealt with worse for longer. One case in particular came to mind.  The guy actually tried to bite me when we lost. Harold didn’t seem inclined to bite and he didn’t get into my personal space. I could deal with him.

On the other hand, Fate looked like he might be the biting sort.

“Do the last five days count toward the thirty? Time served and all?”

“Yes.”

“These first days were highly unpleasant. Do you think I could get extra credit for those? Maybe, I don’t know, you could knock off a day or two? Like they do in jail for good behavior?”. He squinted his eyes and tilted his head. I was going to take that for a no.
