We’re going to start the week with the oh-so-popular Carly Phillips.  She’s written a ton of great books and now she’s offering us a 2-for-1 deal!

*****

BIL_BoxSetBillionaires in Love

Two classic Carly Phillips stories about love, loss and second chances …

The Playboy’s Second Chance

This story was formerly titled Kismet. Since the title was confusing to readers, I changed the name and now bring you The Playboy’s Second Chance. I hope you enjoy my sexy, stand-alone novella.

Trevor Dane, Wall Street Hot Shot and billionaire, has everything — money, power and any woman he could possibly want yet he isn’t happy. When his latest interviewer turns out to be the one woman he’s never forgotten, Trevor sees a second chance and he won’t let Lissa Gardelli’s wariness or old hurts stop him from getting back into her bed… and her heart.

Midnight Angel

Hollywood superstar, Dylan North, revisits his home town with the express intent of seeing his first love once more, to see if they can reignite the love he stupidly threw away ten years before. The last thing Dr. Holly Evans needs in her life is her high school sweetheart returning and stirring up old feelings. But Dylan is determined to convince Holly that happily ever doesn’t only happen in the movies.

Book Review, Jackie Ashenden, Living in Shadow

Things have gotten busy during the week for a little bit so I’m going back to weekend book reviews, at least for a little while.  Hopefully you’ll find something appealing!

*****

cover51180-mediumFinding his way out of the darkness could be the biggest fight of his life.

Living In…, Book 1

Law professor Eleanor May is fine with taking over a class for a colleague on sabbatical.  She’s not so fine with the hot student who’s always seated front and center.   Once upon a time she was that student … and the scars remain eight years after it ended.  Yet this guy seems different from the others.  Despite the alarm bells in her head warning her about history repeating itself, she is drawn toward the forbidden once again— even though this time it could consume her.

Lucien North’s past is darker than the ink on his skin, a reminder of a time when survival was a fight to the death.  Seducing his beautiful professor wasn’t supposed to be part of his plan to put it behind him, but there’s something about Eleanor that’s gotten hold of him and won’t let go.

Together they light up the night, but will their powerful desire lead them to love—or drag them both to the brink of disaster?

Warning: Contains a younger man so hot he might scorch your fingertips, and forbidden lust so tempting, there’s no point in trying to resist. Check your inhibitions at the door—it’s WTFery 101 and class is in session.

Living in Shadow is definitely a scorcher – the sex scenes practically burn up the pages – but there is also a lot of emotional drama (and trauma) to go with it.

Even though it has been almost a decade, Eleanor’s still allowing a bad relationship control her life.  When her attraction to a student starts to heat up, it wars with her long-held fear.  Lucien can’t resist his professor’s pull but he realizes that she’s holding something back.  He wants to get to the bottom of all of her mysteries and release the passion he knows she’s hiding.  But he has secrets of his own, big ones, that he allows to control his life.  As he works to set Eleanor free, it may release demons that he doesn’t want to face.  Although their histories are drastically different, they have left behind scars that both need to face before they can move forward to a healthy and happy life.

Living in Shadow is sexy, raw and intriguing, and at times hard to read.  It does touch on a Dom/sub lifestyle so make sure you are OK with that, while it is very light it is there.  The bigger issues revolve around abuse and force, and it is much more violent a situation, so you need to be prepared for that as well.  Ashenden doesn’t suggest that sex and love can cure all of their troubles but the relationship they build together helps put them on a path to a better place.  You just have to be ready to tiptoe thru darker places to get there.

by L.H. Cosway, Penny Reid

Publication Date: February 2015

Genres: Contemporary, Romance

Blurb:

THE HERMIT

Annie Catrel, social media expert extraordinaire at Davidson & Croft Media and clandestine celebrity blogger, can make anyone shine in the court of public opinion. She is the Socialmedialite, anonymous creator of New York’s Finest and the internet’s darling. Virtual reality is Annie’s forte, but actual reality? Not so much.

THE HOOKER

Ronan Fitzpatrick, aka the best hooker the world of rugby has seen in decades, despises the media—social or otherwise. The press has spun a web of lies depicting him as rugby’s wild and reckless bad boy.

Suspended from his team, Ronan has come to Manhattan to escape the drama, lay low, fly under the radar. Only, Ronan isn’t easy to overlook, and he can’t escape the notice of the Socialmedialite…

THE PLAN

When Ronan is sent to Davidson & Croft Media to reshape his public image, he never expects to cross paths with shy but beautiful Annie, nor does he expect his fierce attraction to her. He couldn’t be happier when her boss suggests pairing them together.

What lengths will Annie take to keep her virtual identity concealed? And what happens when the hooker discovers who the hermit really is?

The Hooker and the Hermit is a collaboration between authors L.H. Cosway and Penny Reid, is a full length 100k word novel, and is a standalone.

unnamed (2)SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.

A Chance at Love, In Love With My Best Friend, In Love With My Best Friend series, Sheena Binkley, The Wedding Part I, The Wedding Part II

The whole friends to lovers idea is one of my ABSOLUTELY favorite story-lines so I’m very excited to welcome Sheena Binkley as she shares a little about herself AND her awesome series!

*****

*What do you like best about writing romances?

The best thing about writing romances is the creating a relationship and seeing the progress of that relationship being developed. From the first encounter, to the first date, being able to go through the journey of a relationship between two people is great to read, because readers might be able to relate to certain events or emotions that a character might be going through.

Also, I love to write a HEA for any couple. After everything a couple might encounter, you would want to root for them to reach their HEA at the end of the story.

*What is your favorite romantic story (movie/book, fact/fiction)?

One of my favorite romantic stories is Sleepless in Seattle. That was one of my mom’s favorite movies and we used to constantly watch it. I loved the entire concept of the movie and of course the characters, especially towards the end when Sam (Tom Hanks) and Annie (Meg Ryan) meet at the Empire State Building.

*If you could be any romantic character, who would it be and why?

If I could be any romantic character, I would have to say Tia from A Chance at Love. She endured so much in the story and the idea that she was able to have a second chance with her childhood sweetheart is amazing. That, and the way Charles was with her in the story, I would had definitely wanted to be in her shoes!

*Which of your characters/books was the most fun to write?

I had a great time writing all of my books, but I think A Chance at Love was my ultimate favorite, because it featured great characters that were strong and independent, but they also had various flaws that they admitted at the end of the story. I also loved the slow buildup between the main characters and how much they realized that they were meant to be with each other.

*If you weren’t a writer and could be anything you want, what would it be?

If I wasn’t a writer, I think I would either be an event coordinator (like Camille in In Love With My Best Friend), or an entertainment reporter. I did want to be a reporter when I was going to college, and that’s something that I find interesting to pursue.

Darlene Fredette, Law of Attraction

Last December we looked at Darlene Fredette’s One Sweet Christmas and I’m so pleased she dropped in again today to chat for a bit and share her newest, Law of Attraction.

Y’all I LOVE this cover and can’t wait to get a chance to read the book!

*****

What do you like best about writing romances?

You get to create a fantasy world with an amazing setting where two characters fall in love. That’s the best type of story to write.

What is your favorite romantic story (movie/book, fact/fiction)?

I love romantic movies, but the one that always stick out in my head is The Notebook.  The characters were wonderful, the plot was captivating, and the ending took my breath away.

Which of your characters/books was the most fun to write?

The heroine I’m writing now in ‘Hershey’s Choice’ is turning out to be my favorite. Her name is Britt Wells.  She’s sassy, crazy, and fun.

If you weren’t a writer and could be anything you want, what would it be?

My daughter tells me I’d be a great teacher, and that’s what I wanted to be when I was younger, so I’d be a teacher.

Excerpt:

Heart pounding in her chest, she closed the door behind him. Wearing her best business face, she returned to this disastrous meeting and sat. Christina drew in a deep breath, and a measure of control was restored. She picked up her pen and flipped open the case file. “So, according to these documents, your client is contesting the divorce?”

Steven reached across the table and snatched the pen from her hand. “What’s the rush, Christina? We haven’t seen each other in years. There’s a lot of catching up to do.”

She clenched her teeth together, barely parting her lips as she spoke. “We have nothing but this case to discuss.”

“Come on, don’t be like that.” He leaned back in his chair, frowning. “You’re not still holding a grudge, are you? What happened was so long ago. I hoped we could start fresh, as friends.”

“Are you freaking serious?” She glared an icy stare. Forget a slow death by high heel. She’d get more pleasure strangling him with her bare hands. “You accused me of misconduct, had me fired, and now you want to be friends?” Her heart thumped a rapid beat in her ears.  “You’re out of your mind.”

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Beautiful Jenny Longtree was expected to do her duty and accept the marriage proposal of a man she abhorred, Calvin Hazeldeck, an old and rich mortician whose offer of a marriage settlement would save her family from destitution brought about by her father’s bad shipping investments.

Then unexpectedly, Jenny’s dear uncle, Sir Roger Addington, who had been informed of the family’s dilemma, offered his favorite niece a London social season as a last chance to find a husband on her own.

But in the whirl of the London season, Jenny realizes that without a dowry her chances of obtaining a marriage proposal are practically non-existent.

Then on the last ball of Almack’s, and when Jenny feels that time is slipping away, Lady Jersey, the head patroness of Almack’s, introduces her to Sebastian Billington, Lord Corville. As they dance the waltz, Jenny realizes she has fallen in love at first sight with a man she is likely never to see again.

And during the seductive dance with Lord Corville, something happens that has Jenny lying on the floor at Lord Corville’s feet, having momentarily passed out. When she comes to, she finds a sea of faces staring down at her and scandal exploding all around her.

EXCERPT

Lord Corville was surprised that Lady Jersey had led him directly into a vision of lovely youth. Usually wallflower duty was how it sounded, giving an opportunity to dance a few sets to girls who were in their first season and not likely to obtain dancing partners on their own because they lacked pedigree or were pretty enough but lacked an attractive dowry. The Almack’s patronesses took their duty to young girls in their first or second season very seriously, and in every ball the two in charge could be seen walking about, matching young ladies to reluctant young men.
Sebastian seldom if ever glanced toward the wallflower area, but now he regretted it. The moment he gave his gloved hand to this girl and led her to the dance floor, it was all he could do to keep his balance until they began their waltz.
Her touch was so sensual, he felt her hand not on his but directly on his groin. A hot frisson coursed along his nerve endings, and his whole body shuddered in anticipation. If he felt so much with only the soft touch of her hand on his, what would he feel with her in his arms?
Suddenly realizing where his mind was going, he shook off such outlandish thoughts. He was a bit foxed and couldn’t even remember what Lady Jersey said the girl’s name was during the introduction. He should have skipped that stop at Rothyn’s townhouse, as they’d dipped into bottles of claret before coming here.
Of course, it was turning out amazingly easy to keep his promise to his sister Camie. One dance with a wallflower debutante? Why this beautiful girl lacked dance partners was beyond his understanding. She was as lovely and as rare as an orchid, and her scent intoxicated him even more than the claret.
He had never felt such jumping sensations as he was now feeling while waltzing with her. Her eyes as she looked at him were sparkling blue aquamarines, and the tingling ripple the mere touch of her hand had started now throbbed along his groin so that his hand tightened on hers even as his breeches tightened. He quickly forced his eyes away from her lithe form, for just a quick glance at her curves unhinged him.
They swayed around the vast ballroom, and the lights from a thousand candles and the twirling couples confused him. The lovely girl in his arms became three identical girls who twirled round and round like the racing dials of a mad clock. He heard the waning notes of the waltz as it was coming to its end and felt so dizzy that, had he not held her, he would have lost his balance. He looked into the girl’s beautiful eyes and his gaze drifted downward. Her breasts, the tops of them peeking alluringly from her filmy gown, were so fetching that he wondered when he had ever seen a better pair. There was a small dark mole on her left breast, and a tiny rosebud by it, and so compelling was the tiny beauty mark that he was hypnotized.
The music had stopped. He looked into the girl’s lovely blue eyes and wondered why they were wide with alarm, and her voice was loud and clear in the silence that followed the conclusion of the waltz.
“Oh!” she exclaimed.
Her hand on his shoulder slipped away as she fell to the floor, her crumpling body settling softly on his feet. Sebastian leaned down toward her prone body.
After a few seconds, the girl opened her eyes. A crowd had rushed forward, and there was a large circle of people around her and Sebastian, three or four deep, looking down with concern. And silence, as everyone just stared.
The girl was helped up by two gentlemen while Lord Corville continued to stare, speechless.
Lady Jersey broke the silence. “What happened to you, my dear?”
A twittering of exclamations rose like a deafening wave, and then sudden silence fell again as the crowd waited in suspense for the girl’s reply.
The girl spoke slowly but clearly, so that everyone heard her words. She looked directly into Lord Corville’s eyes and said, “Lord Corville touched me inappropriately.”

Lisa Medley, Reap & Redeem, The Reaper series

I’m so please to have Lisa Medley share some of her inspiration and a look at her new book, Reap and Redeem.  Part of series that is tailor made for those of you who like paranormal romances.

*****

Cemeteries are an integral part of the setting for the characters of the Reaper Series, who spend a lot of time traveling to, from, and through them. All of the cemeteries of the Reaper Series were inspired by real-life cemeteries near my own hometown. In fact, I’ve done an entire series called Grave Discoveries featuring unique and interesting headstones I’ve encountered in my travels.

Before beginning the Reaper Series, I had little interest in cemeteries. My own mother knows I’ll likely never visit her grave once she’s passed and has taken matters into her own hands by purchasing and placing her own headstone in the family plot, complete with engraved flowers in a vase on the face of the stone.

Perpetual flowers. It’s a thing.

Yesterday I got completely lost in my travels.

For my day job, I’m a vampire for a local blood bank. I travel around organizing blood drives across five counties, and I am responsible for nearly ten thousand donations a year. Most days go smoothly since I’ve covered the same ground for the past fourteen years now, but one wrong turn yesterday took me completely off the map and into parts unknown.

January 2013 011 (2)

The unexpected writerly benefit was I found some super cool graveyards.

IMG_4177 (1024x624)

You probably don’t really pay much attention to cemeteries. But once you start looking, you’ll see they are like Chinese restaurants and banks…there’s one on every corner.

IMG_4340 (831x1024)

I am particularly drawn to decrepit and neglected graveyards. There is an abundance of such places in the rural countryside. Most rely on volunteers to mow the grounds and some haven’t been mowed in a very long time.

IMG_4180 (768x1024)

Those are the best.

IMG_7064 (768x1024)

I especially like broken tombstones and those worn slick by time and the elements.

If you’d like to read my sentiments on the tradition of burying our dead in steel boxes, you can find a post here.

IMG_4178 (1024x497)

No one will ever admire my broken tombstone, but that’s okay.

Since I write reapers, I find graveyards inspiring.

Sometimes you can find inspiration in the strangest places.

Just be careful, some cemeteries are more proactive than others.

Have you ever visited a place that begged for a story afterward? Have you ever visited a place because it was mentioned or featured in a fiction work?

Blurb:

Unjustly declared the campus porn star, Pauline drops out of college and moves back in with her parents, where the whole family is trying to cope with her younger sister’s suicide. To fulfill her sister’s dream, she takes her place on a rafting trip in the wilds of British Columbia. But the brochure never mentioned being stranded with one rugged stranger.

Struggling to rebuild his life after being stationed and injured in Afghanistan, former Marine turned river guide Ellis takes work wherever he can find it. Filling in at the last minute to take a lone young woman on a quick trip downriver looks like easy money. Everything seems golden, until they discover the first abandoned raft. Protecting Pauline becomes his number one priority, and discovering whoever is stalking them becomes number two on his list.

In a race against time and the elements, the only thing they have to lean on is each other. Their struggle for survival rips away the veil of secrecy between them. Trapped in a brutal water maze rife with unexpected obstacles, they fight to love each other and get back to civilization. Alive.
