Adele Downs, Book Review, Santa to the Rescue

9781622663811Firefighter Jamey Tucker knows three things in life to be true: an honorable man doesn’t go back on his word; never hurt a woman; and lasting love isn’t a myth. But with his recent move to a new job at Appleton Fire Station, the long hours don’t offer hope of finding the love he’s looking for.

When Jamey meets beautiful pediatric nurse Heather Longhurst after hearing her sing “Santa Baby” in a supermarket aisle, he offers her a promise he discovers he can’t keep. Heather has been betrayed by men in the past, making it hard for Jamey to gain her trust. Determined to find a way to win her heart, Jamey uses firefighter engine-uity and Heather’s favorite song to prove he’s got Christmas spirit she can believe in all year.

Coming in at under 50 pages, Santa to the Rescue is a bite-sized holiday treat.  I think I would have liked about 5 more pages to get a good feel for Heather’s history with men, just to make her distrust a little more understandable.  Overall, though, I was super thrilled with this novella.  Jamey is sweet and hunky and everything you would want in your hero.  Heather is just as sweet and caring and makes the perfect match for him.  Downs does a great job of packing a full-fledged romance into such a tiny package, giving readers an uplifting story that will quickly get them into the holiday spirit.

If you are looking for a quick read that will warm your heart, remind you of the bubbly feelings when first falling in love and get you into the giving mindset, Santa to the Rescue is the perfect kickoff to the season of celebration.

A Long Time Coming, Heather Van Fleet

It’s release day for Heather Van Fleet’s newest, A Long Time Coming.  Check out all of the details below!

*****

A Long Time ComingBlurb:

Abigail Orson has a problem. A love problem to be precise; and she has absolutely no idea how to go about fixing it.

For years now, she has been chasing her best friend’s brother—demanding things from him that he’s never wanted to give. For one? A real relationship that surpasses well beyond that dreaded ‘just friends’ zone. You see, David Anderson is her idea of perfection to a T. The one and only guy who has ever had the ability to make her heart beat faster; make her toes curl with the simple blink of his long, girly lashes. But David is also a recovering amputee, and the only thing he really wants from Abigail is to be left alone. Abigail is a fighter though, and losing the one guy who has ruined her for every other is no longer an option.

A guy with one leg who has lost his motivation to live—to love—to actually be a man. David believes he’s a waste of space. If only the beautiful girl of his unattainable dreams would get that through her perfect, blonde, stubborn head! He’s not the right guy for Abigail. He’ll never be worthy of what she deserves. However, staying away is almost impossible, especially when he’s just as in love with her as she is with him. But Abigail has a life ahead of her, one that’s definitely livable without a nineteen–year–old gimp like him holding her down. What makes her want to stick around is beyond questionable to David’s mind.

Choices will be made. Lines will be drawn. And together, they will face challenges that nobody saw coming. David and Abigail may have had almost fourteen years to fall in love, but the thing is, timing and love have never exactly worked in their favor.

It has been years in the making, and definitely A Long Time Coming for David and Abigail. Let’s hope they don’t screw it up before they actually have the chance to get it right…

Excerpt:

She spun around, nibbling on her lip, grabbing both of his hands as she pulled him slowly along with her. Her eyes were so focused and shiny that he barely remembered his own name, let alone what he was about to say.

“No crutches, David.”

They made it to the edge of the floor, just as the tempo of the music slowed, to that of a seductive, rhythmic beat. She pulled his hands towards her, and he took that non–verbal command, wrapping his arms around her waist. His fingers knew just what to do, settling into the curves of her body right above her perfect ass. Those damn traitorous body parts had a mind of their own.

“I won’t let you fall…” she whispered in his ear, running her fingers through the back of his hair like a vixen who he wanted to steal away forever, only, though, so he could lock her up with him in the backseat of her car again.

Shit …it wasn’t the fear of falling that worried him. Oh no…it was the fear of never wanting to let her go again.

Excerpt:

I turn to face him; he puts his other arm around me. We are in the same position as before when the last kiss attempt failed. My arms are tight around his neck, his arms around my waist. I look down. He lifts up my chin so I’m lost in his gaze. His hand goes back to my waist. He swallows; I think he’s as nervous as I am. He tilts his head and leans in … I back away quickly.

“What’s wrong?” he asks, looking hurt.

“Oh, no, it’s not you. I think … I might have garlic breath.”

He laughs and pulls me back to him. “So do I.” He pulls me in tighter, and before I know what’s happening, his lips are on mine. I give in and surrender to him completely.

This feels like one of my fantasies, only way, way better. He holds me tight as one hand moves from my waist to caress my cheek, kissing me softly but sensually. My hands move to the back of his head, and I grab a lock of hair in each hand. He moves our bodies so that I’m against the railing at the edge of the deck. He moves his hand from my waist to hold the rail as I still grasp his hair. The kissing becomes feverishly passionate; his tongue against mine as they intertwine with each other. Our breathing becomes faster and erratic. Our kissing becomes more intimate. We are in perfect sync with each other. I pull him closer to me, our whole bodies touching. My heart is pounding fast and hard. His hand moves from my face to the back of my head, pulling me tight. He moves my hair from the side of my neck, breaks our kiss and kisses my neck slowly and seductively. I sigh and breathe in a stuttering motion. I open my eyes to see the waitress standing there, gawking at us. I stiffen as I see her. He pulls back and looks at me. With my eyes, I gesture toward the waitress. He turns, looks, and lets out a little huff. He leans in towards me.

“Now that’s a first kiss,” he whispers as he grabs my hand and leads me over to the table. I can’t help but smile.

Between Fire and Ice series, J.N. Johnson, Raven's Legacy

I’m pleased that author J. N. Johnson agreed to give us a glimpse into her new book, Raven’s Legacy.  Take a look below and then go tell J. N. how wonderful it was to have her drop by.

*****

Hello there ladies and gents, I am here today to introduce you to my newest release Ravens Legacy, my leading lady Raven and explain where this crazy story came from. First let me just say that this was my virgin trip into the paranormal world and damn was it was fun! I want to stay there and live in the crazy day to day activities that surround the eclectic cast of characters that roam the forest on Bowe Mountain.  It was a blast getting to make up characters that could do or be anything and a world where anything was possible.

First let me introduce you to Raven Corvus, she is the adopted daughter of the headstrong leader or the Corvus clan, Talfryn. She was born to an unknown mother and soon learns that her crazy as a loon biological father wants nothing more than for her to bite the big one.

Problem is she is different than the rest of her pack or clan, she lacks the ability to shift and with the pressure to find a mate beating down on her as the Moon Ceremony draws closer dealing with family issues is the last thing on her mind.

Unfortunately for her the universe has other plans. Enter crazy aunt Helen and her magical who-do and things just keep twisting up. Going from the outside looking in and wanting what everyone else has to her cup running over with crazy, Raven has to think fast and come to terms with her new destiny.

With the help of the uber sexy Griffin she does what she thinks is best for her family and leaves Bowe Mountain for the safety of the secluded cabin. Well we all know what happens in the cabin stays in the cabin. But if you want to find out READ THE BOOK! J

Oh now we mustn’t forget the ever present bad guy. Corbin is the epitome of ick. He is the daddy that no little girl hopes for and prays never comes back after running for the hills. Poor Raven doesn’t have that kind of luck. Instead he comes out guns blaring to see his little girl and well he turns her world upside down again. Yep, poor Raven is getting pretty dizzy by now. Between her crazy dreams, the hot guy by her side and the sicko tracking her down this poor chick doesn’t get much down time.

So now that you have a glimpse into my twisted little world I hope that you take the time to come and meet the nutty cast of characters in Ravens Legacy, A Between Fire and Ice Novella. Oh and did I mention that there is deity that speaks in riddles?

Thank you for having me on the site today and thank you to your readers for taking the time to read the ramblings of this very sick and bedridden author, I hope you will forgive my Nyquil induced chatter and that you drop a line and say hello!

–J.N Johnson

RL BY JNRaven’s Legacy by J.N. Johnson

Blurb:

Raven Corvus has always felt like she was on the outside looking in. Being adopted into a family of shifters without the ability to shift has put her life on hold. Never wanting to take part in the Moon Ceremony or choosing a mate, she tends to distance herself from her people. When an accident lets loose a side of her that had been hidden for her protection she is forced to come to terms with whom and what she really is.

Griffin Snow serves as a protector for the Goddess in the fight against Dexius, the Dark God. When an old enemy returns to threaten one of his charges, he jumps into action to protect Raven—only to discover that she is not just his charge, but his fated mate. Hiding out in the safety of Griffin’s cabin only adds to the need growing inside of them.

Can Raven and Griffin save their people from the big, bad ugly or will they lose their chance at happiness?

*****

Excerpt:

Raven watched as the sun set over the valley. The view from her front porch was utterly breathtaking in the spring. The stars lit up the sky like a blanket of glittering diamonds, the absence of the moon leaving them the only guides in the sky. It wouldn’t be long until she made her appearance known to Raven’s kind. The drawl of her moon song would be too strong to ignore. But no matter how loud the beat played in Raven’s head she wouldn’t be able to answer the call. Fate had given her a bum ride; she could hear and feel the drawl of the moon but her body wouldn’t respond. It was a cruel reality that she dealt with every month.

“Raven, get in here now! Your father needs your help getting ready for the ceremony.”

Her mother had a temper shorter than a dynamite fuse and it was burning fast from the stress of the Moon Ceremony. Once the moon showed herself in the eastern sky, in less than a week, their home would be flooded with other shifters preparing for the spring mating ritual.

“I’m coming, Mom.” She whispered a few choice expletives, but with a shifter’s hearing her mother had no trouble understanding her ramblings.

“Young lady, I know you are twenty-five, but you’re still my daughter and I will pull you over my knee.” Her mother’s goodhearted laugh let her know it wasn’t urgent. Nevertheless, the stress level was getting pretty damn high. “Now get out in the yard and help your father.”

Her father, Talfryn Corvus, had been planning the Moon Ceremony since he was chosen by the council last spring. He was to host the opening ceremonies of the mating ritual on their family lands. Ever since he had been chosen, he had become obsessed with every small detail, and had driven Raven to the brink of insanity.

She walked through the front doors and back into the chill night air. Her father was bent over placing stones around the center alter, preparing a small pit to contain the fire.

“Hey Dad, did you need me?”

“Yes, please take a seat.” He indicated one of the makeshift benches made from cut logs that now lined the yard. The smell of sawdust mixed with the sweet smell of spring. “Daughter, I think you understand how important this ceremony is to your mother and me. I need to know for sure that you understand your part. You don’t have to shift to be included in the ritual but you should try to commune with the Goddess. She will choose your mate.”

Upon their eighteenth birthday, shifters gathered at the change of each season under the first full moon to not only celebrate and dance but to find and seal the mating bond. Most shifters went into the ceremony with their intended mate, ready to make the commitment and start families. Others went with the intent of finding their mate among the flock. But not Raven.

“Dad, I understand. I’m just not ready.”

“You are twenty-five and have refused each chance at a mate. Why do you buck tradition? You could have any man in the flock you desire and yet you still choose none.”

Her father was right on one count. She did turn her nose up at the traditions of her people, and she couldn’t imagine tying herself to one person for the rest of her life. She wanted to be free, to be among the rest of humanity, and off of this damn mountain.

He was wrong to assume she had her choice of mates. Most of the men she knew were family, and the ones who could be potential mates kept a wide berth when she was around. She was born different from most shifters, with the moon closer to her heart than her non-existent beast, and it kept her from the one thing she really wanted.

“Daddy, you know how I feel about finding a mate. When the Goddess thinks I’m ready, she will bring him to me. Not a moment before.”

Book Review – It Takes Two to Tangle

Book Review, It Takes Two to Tangle, Theresa Romain

Time for another book review.

*****

cover30224-medium

Though he lost the use of an arm in the Napoleonic Wars, Henry Middlebrook returns to London society and begins an ambitious courtship of the ton’s reigning beauty. When he experiences limited success, he decides to ask for assistance from the beauty’s companion, Frances Whittier. A soldier’s widow with a murky past, Frances admires Henry’s courage and sends him a secret letter. He thinks the letter is from her mistress, and Frances must correct his mistake if she wants to engage his heart.

The blurb seems a little choppy but the book itself is beautifully done and both Frances and Henry are engaging and fascinating. Henry has a lot of baggage left over from the war, not only from his arm but also from the battle that caused his injury. He’s finding it difficult to reclaim a place in society and he sees Caroline as the way to get him there …. and Caroline’s companion, Frances, as a means to win. He’s a man of great pride and that pride is going to cause him issues when it goes contrary to his heart.

Frances has a history of making poor choices with men. And I think that is the only reason that I’m not sure I understand her decisions. She knows what deceiving a man can do but she doesn’t tell Henry the truth right away. I think I would understand her reasoning a little better if she hadn’t had something similar go so poorly in the past and she knows that Henry is not going to take it well when he finds out she’s the letter writer.

But I love the friendship that sparks between these two. They mesh well and understand each other, are witty and charming and humorous together, but with a deeper connection. You know that it is going to blow up at some point, and of course resolve itself, but the journey is sweet.  In It Takes Two to Tangle, Romain creates two enthralling characters that pull you in right away and keep you glued to the pages until the very end.

They ask men the hard questions, compare their answers with hers, then she filters through the profiles of each provided “match.” After numerous email exchanges, she narrows it down to two promising candidates she’s excited to meet in person.

When Ellen’s best friend asks her for a favor, dog-sitting leads to disaster and Ellen ends up at the local vet where she meets a man she can’t get out of her mind. Henry isn’t a logical choice, but she finds herself paying for dog obedience class to spend more time with him.

Ellen knows that in order to have a lasting relationship, she should take the safe route and go for one of the pre-screened guys. But, how can she think with her head when her heart keeps begging her to give Henry a chance?

I read this one in just over an hour and loved every minute of it.  It reminded me a little of Bridget Jones’s Diary, although Ellen didn’t get herself into quite as much trouble. But it had that perfect mix of humor, zaniness, miscommunication, embarrassment, and most importantly romance.  It’s a short book, but it didn’t lose a lot of the details needed to make the characters and story interesting.  I really felt for Ellen as she tried to figure out what was important to her in a relationship, what she needed to make her happy.  She’s very analytical about it all but she definitely had her reasons and luckily she didn’t take too long to realize what was important.

Love at First Date is the perfect choice for your lunch break or a long soak in the tub – in just a handful of pages, it made me giggle and smile and brightened up my day.

Book Review – Fatty Patty

Review time!

*****

cover34662-medium

Small towns, long memories. Everyone in the exclusive summer resort of James Bay, Michigan remembers FATTY PATTY, the chubby little girl with the round face and wild red curls. All grown up now, Patty Perreault teaches at the same elementary school where the painful playground memories still taunt her. She hasn’t forgotten the cruel nickname—plus she still hasn’t lost those extra pounds. Convinced her weight is the biggest reason why she’s a four-time loser in the semifinals for Teacher of the Year, Patty resolves to make some changes in her body and her life.

Sam Curtis, an overweight accountant she meets at the community pool, swims into Patty’s life with romance on his mind. But as their friendship grows, Patty finds it hard to see beyond his extra pounds. She’s torn as Sam refuses to deal with his own overweight issues. Her heart tells her one thing, but her eyes see another. She’s not interested in an overweight boyfriend.

When it comes to winning the Grand Prize in life and love, Patty has some hard lessons to learn. Will she be able to confront her fears about the kind of woman she yearns to be? Will she be able to put down the fork and give her heart a try?

I honestly did not like Patty for much of this book … But I think that was kinda the point.  We were meant to be able to identify with her but not necessarily find her likable.  She knows that she’s making bad choices and saying or doing unflattering things, but she can’t help herself.  Some of it broke my heart but I could see myself thinking or doing the same things.

Paterka does a fantastic job of giving readers someone who could just as easily live next door as between the pages of a book.  It is so easy to see how Patty gets herself into these situations and why she does what she does.  She’s so believable and relatable.

Patty does a lot of growing throughout the story and by the end I found myself rooting for her – she learns what’s important and where she belongs.  Fatty Patty is a sweet story about love, growth and learning what is important.  And I’m glad I read through to the end.

Book Review – Undeniable

Book Review, Shannon Richard, Undeniable

It’s review time again!

*****

cover34977-medium

Grace King knows two things for certain: she loves working at her grandmother’s café and she loves the hunky town sheriff. She always has. As she bakes him sweet treats, Grace fantasizes about helping him work up an appetite all night long. But whenever she thinks she’s finally getting somewhere, he whips out some excuse to escape. Growing up, he never looked twice at her. Now Grace won’t rest until she has Jax’s undivided attention.

Jaxson Anderson can’t deny that his best friend’s kid sister is the sexiest woman in Mirabelle, Florida. Unwilling to burden Grace with his painful past, Jax keeps the sassy blonde at arm’s length. Yet one heated kiss crumbles all of his carefully built defenses. But when a town secret surfaces, threatening to destroy everything they believe in, can the man who defended Grace from bullies as a child protect her now?

Undeniable is Richard’s follow up to Undone, which tells the story of Grace’s brother (and Jax’s best friend) Brendan and his wife Paige.  As with a lot of series, this one can technically stand on its own but I think that you might miss some of the nuances not having read the previous book.  BUT having said that, if you want to start here you’ll be fine.  I haven’t read Undone (yet) and I thought this one was fantastic.

Readers are given a great mix of suspense and romance with Jax and Grace’s story.  Jax, as a sheriff’s deputy, is investigating break-ins around town and of course the culprits cross paths with Grace at some point.  You can probably figure it out somewhat easily but even so it is well-developed and interesting.  Richard does a great job of keeping it simple and to the point – she doesn’t throw in a lot of twists and turns – making it realistic and believable.

The biggest part, though, revolves around Grace’s long-standing love for Jax and whether he will ever admit, and give in, to his feelings for her.  The emotional damage done by Jax’s abusive parents is the main thing holding him back.  Even though he had people in his life that loved and supported him, it is extremely hard to let go of those feelings of worthlessness that come from years of having his own father tell him he’s nothing.  Jax screws up so many times with Grace but knowing what his life was like you can definitely understand why he would feel the way he does.

Grace is pretty well adjusted, especially for someone who has spent a lot of her life being called a bastard.  She has never known who her father is and always wondered why he wouldn’t want to know her.  She’s also spent almost all of her life loving Jax and she’s tired of waiting for him to love her back so she takes matters into her own hands.  Things are definitely rocky for the two but she handles it like a trooper.

Richard does an amazing job of giving us realistic characters with realistic problems and reactions – they are so believable that I hurt and celebrated right along with them.  And as much as I absolutely LOVED these two, my favorite part is that the story is about so much more than them.  They have a fantastic group of friends and family who have genuine love and support for one another.  They all have their own problems and they are guaranteed to have heart-breaking stories when given their own books.  I’m looking forward to each and every one.

Undeniable gives readers rich characters, quirky small-town charm, and heartfelt highs and lows, with just that perfect touch of mystery to keep you on the edge of your seat.
